Recalls, owner-reported complaints, investigations and safety data

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
2
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

The defect: PACCAR Incorporated (PACCAR) is recalling certain 2008-2019 Peterbilt 330, 335, 337, 340, 348, 365, 367, 384, 386, 387, 388, 389, 567, 579 and 587 vehicles and 2008-2020 Kenworth T170, T270, T370, T660, T680, T800, T880, and W900 vehicles equipped with NAMUX Software. In the event that the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) loses battery and/or ignition power to the controller, the dash warning light for the ABS may not illuminate to warn the driver of the loss of ABS. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 121, "Air Brake Systems," and 136, "Electronic Stability Control System on Heavy Vehicles."
The risk: If the driver unknowingly operates the vehicle without the ABS functioning, there would be an increased risk of a crash.
The remedy: PACCAR will notify owners, and dealers will update the NAMUX software within the cab control module, free of charge. PACCAR issued owners an interim notification on June 4, 2020. The recall began May 26, 2020. Owners may contact Kenworth customer service at 1-425-828-5888 or Peterbilt customer service at 1-940-591-4220. PACCAR's number for this recall is 20pbc AND 20KWB.

Driveshaft separates from tractor

Opened Aug 2, 2010

SummaryOn July 13, 2010, the Office of Defects Investigations (ODI) opened an investigation on model year (MY) 2007-2009 Peterbilt tractors equipped with the (SPL170XL extended lube inter-axle driveline).ODI opened this investigation based on one Vehicle Owners Questionnaire (VOQ) and certain Peterbilt field reports.During the course of the investigation, ODI reviewed PACCAR's IR (October 22, 2010) response with associated data related to Warranty and complaint information, mined field data, interviewed customers and visited local dealers within the Washington Metropolitan area.PACCARconducted testing regarding torsional loading and identified various causative factors contributed to this safety defect finding. The Defect is a consequence of the bearing surfaces of the SPL170XL extended lube universal joint that attaches the inter-axle driveline to the drive axle becoming prematurely worn due to a breakdown of lubrication and/or excessive heat.Prematurely worn bearing surfaces may result in the u-joint becoming loose and/or binding. This condition may result in universal joint failure, allowing the inter-axle driveline to detach from the axle, which may cause the drive shaft to separate from the vehicle, increasing the risk of personal injury or property damage hazard.ODI learned that the affected population of the alleged defect extended to peer models within PACCAR.In summary, the following vehicles are being recalled: MY 2007 and 2008 Kenworth trucks, models T600, T660, T2000, T800 and W900 and MY 2007/2008 Peterbilt trucks, models357, 378, 379, 385, 386, 387, 388, and 389 allequipped with extended lube inter-axle drivelines manufactured by Dana Corporation. The recall affects vehicles manufactured between February 2, 2006 and April 30, 2007.At this time PACCAR has not yet identified a fix for the inner-axle safety defect and is currently conducting testing with the intent to provide a solution to the failure.ODI will monitor the development of PACCARS testing and ensure a timely repair for the consumer. This investigation is closed.

2008 PETERBILT 386 ROAD TRACTOR WITH A CUMMINS ISX 550 HP ENGINE. PURCHASED 9-10-07. ELECTRICAL ISSUES. THE DOOR LOCKS WERE BLOWING FUSES, THE GPS AND RADIO WOULD GO OFF AND ON, THE POWER WINDOWS AND WINDSHIELD WIPERS STOPPED WORKING, THE DASH LIGHTS AND BUZZERS WOULD FLASH AND ALARM WHEN ON ROUGH ROADS, THE LOW COOLANT LIGHT STAYING ON. SOME SENSORS;FUSES REPLACED. IN JANUARY HAVING OIL PRESSURE ISSUES. PRESSURE WOULD DROP TO 0 AND TRUCK WOULD SHUT OFF. TOLD THIS A CLOGGED OIL FILTER. CHANGED THE FILTER. CONTINUED TO HAVE THE PROBLEM. IN FEBRUARY WE TOOK THE IT IN FOR THIS, AND THE ELECTRICAL; THEY COULD FOUND NOTHING. WE PICKED IT UP, DROVE ABOUT 3 MILES AND THE OIL PRESSURE BEGAN TO FLUCTUATE. TOOK IT BACK, IT WAS KEPT SEVERAL DAYS AND THEY STILL FOUND NOTHING. THEN THE FUEL WAS NOT EQUALIZING BETWEEN TANKS AND THE TRUCK WOULD RUN OUT OF FUEL. WE BROUGHT IT IN ON 4-23-08. WE NOTED THE OIL PRESSURE, THE ELECTRICAL AND THE FUEL NOT EQUALIZING. AFTER 2 DAYS, AGAIN NOTHING WAS FOUND. PICKED IT UP ON 4-25-08, PICKED UP A LOCAL LOAD TO DELIVER ON THE 28TH. 5:30PM THE TRUCK BROKE DOWN. IT WAS TOWED TO THE SHOP. THE MECHANIC SAID IT WAS AN ELECTRICAL ISSUE WITH THE OIL PRESSURE SYSTEM. THE NEXT MORNING A MECHANICAL GAUGE WAS PUT ON THE TRUCK AND SHOWED NO OIL PRESSURE. A GEAR HAD SHEARED OFF THE OIL PUMP. IT WAS REPLACED. WE PICK UP THE TRUCK ON 5-2-08, WOULD NOT START AND HAD TO BE JUMP STARTED. DROVE APPROXIMATELY 30 MILES THE ENGINE THREW A ROD THROUGH THE SIDE. IT IS STILL IN THE SHOP. CUMMINS OPTED TO REBUILD THE ENGINE RATHER THAN REPLACE IT. THE TRUCK IS EQUIPPED WITH A SLEEPER WHICH WE ARE AFRAID TO USE BECAUSE OF THE WIRING. WE HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT OUR TRUCK IS NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH OIL PUMP FAILURES. THEREFORE WE WOULD LIKE TO REQUEST A FULL INVESTIGATION INTO THIS MATTER. *TR
