2016 RAM 1500 Problems

The contact owns a 2016 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving 80 MPH, the towing suddenly failed. The contact was able to drive off the exit. The contact was able to drive to the residence. The contact stated that the week before, while idling at a stop light, the vehicle suddenly stalled. The check engine warning light illuminated, and the contact cleared the code before restarting the vehicle and continued driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and was diagnosed with a tone wheel failure. The failure was associated with NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V475000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The contact learned that the vehicle was included in a recall in 2019, and the fix included updating the powertrain control module software. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and confirmed that the repair was no longer covered under recall. The failure mileage was approximately 167,000.

The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 170,000.

Rack and pinion has failed after 10 years. Luckily it went out a my wife was getting home. I've had a mechanic verify that it has failed completely and I am in the process of getting a new one.

The contact stated that while pulling out of the garage and onto the driveway, the steering wheel seized, and the message "Power Steering Needs to Be Serviced" was displayed. The contact turned off the vehicle. Upon restarting the vehicle the following day, the steering wheel operated as intended, and the contact slowly drove to the dealer. The dealer diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the steering rack and pinion had failed and needed to be replaced. The contact associated the failure with NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V167000 (Steering); however, the repair was not covered because the VIN was not included in the recall. The vehicle was scheduled to be repaired at the owner's expense. The manufacturer, RAM, was notified of the failure via website and by phone, and a case was filed. The contact was informed that no assistance would be provided and was referred to the dealer for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 13,800.

The ABS module has failed. This ABS module failure is producing the following codes: The failure code in the ABS module is C2200–49 indicating a internal module failure when the ABS module goes off-line it sets communication codes in other modules, causing the transmission module to go into limp mode. This has been confirmed by an independent service center. There are multiple warning lights on the dashboard including the ABS light, the traction light, and the brake light. This failure is causing multiple failure codes and no communication within the engine. Please see attached pictures and documentation from garage.

ABS braking system malfunction

I took my truck in to get the front end looked at and this local garage inspects the vehicle. They informed me the gas tank brackets and straps have corroded so bad that the gas tank is sagging and how serious it would be if it fell more or fell off completely. Obviously the gas tank falling off and possible exploding or catching fire is a serious safety issue. Upon my own research, there is a safety recall (U04) that did not include my specific truck for unknown reasons. Then upon further digging I found a safety warranty extension (X75) attached to my vehicle. When I took it in to get inspected and fixed, the dealership informed me this is a Canadian truck and they could not fix it under this X75 warranty extension. This truck was built in [XXX] and I purchased it used in [XXX] so I am not sure why the Canadian part has anything to do with this truck. The warranty extension letter even states unlimited miles and it doesn't matter if I am the original owner or not. It appears to be a fuel leak. The incident happened less than 200 miles after having a dealer perform the NHTSA recall 22V-406, FCA recall Z46. The truck caught fire while pulling a travel trailer. The only way we were aware of it was a passing motorist saw flames shooting out from under the right side. As soon as we pulled over the truck immediately filled with smoke and the fire spread as the fuel puddled below the truck. Chrysler sent an inspector to look at the truck, not enough of the engine, passenger cabin, or front of the truck was left to make a conclusive cause. There was no indication we had an issue and if not for the fortunate timing of the passing motorist this could have turned out much worse. I was relating this story in a restaurant to my nephew when a passing waiter asked if it was a ECO diesel and I said yes, he related his story which was identical including the recall. I attempted to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher we kept in the truck but it was too big by the time we pulled over. We were traveling at less than 50MPH stop and go traffic which had just started moving.

Part also apparently cannot be repaired by a 3rd party due to the chips no longer being manufactured. Only way to repair and make the vehicle "operable" is to purchase a "used" module from another donor vehicle which is also suspect and potentially unsafe. A recall needs to be instituted to protect the safety of the public and vehicle owners. RAM and its owner Stellantis need to be held accountable.

The combination of these warning lights concerns me because it appears to indicate a failure or malfunction involving the ABS/brake-control system. I am concerned that ABS, electronic stability control, and traction control functions may not operate properly during an emergency breaking or loss-of-traction event. I understand that owners of 2016 1500 vehicles have reported similar combinations of ABS, traction control ,and brake warning lights and have reported ABS-module failures. I am requesting that NHTSA document and investigate this condition as a potential safety defect affecting 2016 Ram 1500 vehicles. I would like this complaint associated with my VIN and mileagefor purposes of identifying any trend involving ABS-module or brake-system failures. I have photographs showing the warning lights illuminated on my vehicle.

ABS module failed causing ABS, traction control, and cruise control to stop functioning along with intermittent loss of power steering. Contacted multiple dealers which all stated the part is no longer available and no replacement part. This was a nuisance for two years until I towed a trailer and was merging onto an interstate when I lost traction due to wet roads and no traction control. Vehicle and trailer fishtailed and I was barely able to gain control without contacting any other vehicles on the very busy interstate. I was able to find a rebuilt abs module on eBay for $1100 that I installed and corrected the issue. This year model needs to be added to the existing recall that has been posted for many other years for this exact issue

Air Suspension malfunction - the truck lost suspension and was dangerous to drive

I originally brought my vehicle into Mac Haik Dodge in April 2025 for issues with my Air Suspension and 4-Wheel drive control modules displaying on the dashboard of my vehicle. I was advised by Mac Haik's Service department in April 2025 that they were unable to replicate or address the issues with my vehicle after having my vehicle for the 2 days. On 12/29/2025 my vehicle once again displayed the same exact issues that were being shown on my dashboard of the vehicle and I brought my vehicle to the Mac Haik Dodge to have these issues addressed. I was advised by Mac Haik's Service department that one DTCM module would need to be ordered to correct the service Air suspension and Service 4-Wheel drive control modules. After the one DTCM module was ordered and repaired I was advised that an additional module would need to be ordered to address the Air suspension features of my vehicle. Mac Haik ordered the 2nd module and repaired my vehicle. My vehicle was recently picked up on 01/20/2026 after a month's long repair process of my vehicle being at Mac Haik Dodge to have these 2 repairs completed. What I do not understand is why Mac Haik was not able to address or repair these concerning issues in April 2025. I ended up paying $1,801.00 for these costly repairs to get my vehicle's issues repaired. Moreonever, during the time my vehicle was at Mac Haik Dodge I missed several days of work due to only having 1 primary vehicle to drive as a means of transportation. I was not offered any sort of rental or loaner vehicle to have to drive while these repairs were ongoing. I am reaching out to Chrysler to see if anything can be done to offer any sort of assistance for a full reimbursement of my repairs that I paid for. I am attaching the full repair bill of $1,801.00 that I paid on 01/20/2026.

Vehicle was in a front end collision and the air bags never deployed. Approximate speed 40-45 mph

The inflator end cap failed in September 2024 and failed again in February 2025. Most recently, the contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the ABS warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, and the code was cleared; however, the failure persisted. The dealer retrieved a fault code for "Failure to Communicate with ABS Module". The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer informed the contact that parts were not available to repair the vehicle. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

i have 2016 ram 1500 p/u and tailgate has problem opening up and/or opening on its own. This problem ended up sending me to the hospital in an ambulance with a concussion, fractured pelvic bone and 4 broken ribs.

The tailgate on my 2016 Dodge Ram will not stay locked and falls open during cold weather. I've contacted the dealer but they said this particular vin is not included in a recall. I've accessed the inside panel on the tailgate several times to clean and lubricate, but it only works for a short time. It's been a continuous problem for the last 5 to 6 years...only when it is cold.

RADIO SHUTS OFF WITHOUT WARNING, LOCKS UP AND WILL ONLY TURN BACK ON WHEN SHUTTING OFF VEHICLE AND RESTARTING IT. HEADLIGHT FLICKER ON AND OFF WHILE DRIVING. HEADLIGHT FLICKER HAS DONE THIS FOR 3 MONTHS NOW

ON ANOTHER OCCASION, WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH, THE HEADLIGHTS CEASED WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT HAD TO USE THE HIGH BEAM HEADLIGHTS WHEN OPERATING THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO FREMONT MOTOR CASPER (6101 E 2ND ST, CASPER, WY 82609, (307) 462-5508) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE VEHICLE CONTROL MODULE WAS DEFECTIVE. THE DEALER REFERRED THE CONTACT TO NHTSA TO FILE A COMPLAINT AND HAVE AN INVESTIGATION STARTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 48,500.

“Service ABS System”, “Service Electronic Braking System” and Traction Control warnings keep randomly occurring. Replacement ABS module is unavailable for this extremely widespread issue. Has anyone discussed a class action lawsuit for this issue? I’ve never had more problems with a vehicle than I’ve had with this truck. Ram should be embarrassed. I’ll be trading it in soon and I’ll never buy another one, that’s for sure.

The contact pulled over to the side of the road and was informed by a mechanic that the front passenger’s side wheel lug nuts and bolts were loosened and had detached. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was determined that the lug nuts were missing. The dealer stated that the wheel, lug nuts, bolts, and hub needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that on March 19th, 2025, the failure reoccurred while driving approximately 75 MPH. The contact was able to pull over to the side of the road and became aware that the lug nuts had either sheared off or had detached from the vehicle. The contact was able to drive the vehicle to another dealer, who replaced three lug bolts and lug nuts. The manufacturer was contacted and opened a case. The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was 178,080.

The drivers side seat belt is very difficult to latch.

When putting on seat belt it won't stay secured, you have to constantly insert seat belt for it to stay, there's something wrong with it.

When the contact stopped the vehicle, he observed that the tailgate was open and he was able to raise and secure the tailgate. The contact stated that later he was starting the vehicle and saw that the tailgate was again open, however, he was not able to secure the tailgate. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact had not taken the vehicle to a local dealer or independent mechanic. The vehicle was not diagnosed and was not repaired. The contact called a local dealer and was informed that he would need to bring the vehicle in for a diagnostic check. The contact asked if there was an open recall. The contact was advised by the dealer that NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V486000 (Structure, Latches/Locks/Linkages) had been completed on the vehicle by a previous owner and he was no longer covered by the recall. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 78,000.

The contact was unable to control the vehicle and crashed into the curb, and the passenger side tire popped. The driver continued to drive and parked. WHILE HAVING A ROUTINE OIL CHANGE I DISCOVERED ON THE VEHICLE SEVERAL SMALL AREAS OF CHIPPED PAINT AND RUST IMMEDIATELY ABOVE THE WINDSHIELD. THE WINDSHIELD IS THE ORIGINAL AND NEVER CHANGED SO THERE IS NO REASON FOR THE PAINT DEFECTS ALONG THE WINDSHIELD SEAM AREA SO THAT WHEN THE RUST GOES THROUGH THE WINDSHIELD WILL BECOME UNSTABLE AND POSE A POTENTIAL HAZARD OR COULD FAIL ALTOGETHER. I SPOKE WITH A RAM DEALER WHO WAS UNINTERESTED IN THE PROBLEM. I HAVE CALLED RAM COOPERATE HEADQUARTERS AND REPORTED THE ISSUE. PLEASE SEE ATTACHED PHOTOS.
