Rear Toe Link May Separate
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received two Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs) reporting left rear toe link separation in certain Model Year (MY) 2023-2024 Rivian R1S vehicles. Both VOQs report component separation while driving, causing the vehicles to swerve across multiple lanes of traffic. One incident resulted in a collision with an adjacent vehicle and roadside barrier. In both separations, the bolt that maintains the integrity of the toe link fractured. Evidence collected from the complaint vehicles included repair histories, onboard video, imagery of the damaged components, and a police accident report. The two vehicles with reported separation have different vehicle histories. One vehicle received prior service and the other was involved in a previous collision. In both instances, the vehicles operated for multiple months and thousands of miles of usage with no apparent problems between the previous service or the previous collision and the failures that prompted this investigation. Rivian recognized the subject toe link joint’s sensitivity to service procedures in March of 2025 in its updated service procedures. In January 2026 through recall 26V-003, Rivian extended the improved repair procedure to vehicles that received toe link service prior to the March 2025 improvement. ODI is opening a Preliminary Evaluation (PE) to (1) assess the sensitivity of the rear toe link joint to foreseeable road and service conditions, (2) compare the physical failure evidence from the two VOQs to identify apparent similarities and potential differences, (3) evaluate Rivian’s current toe link repair procedure, and (4) assess the in-field subject population’s toe links conditions. Reports submitted to NHTSA, shown in the owner's own words
This vehicle has experienced two separate failures of the high-voltage (HV) battery pack, each resulting in a different drive unit being damaged and total loss of electrical systems while driving. First incident (July 28, 2025): While driving, all warning lights illuminated and the vehicle indicated a possible electrical hazard. The vehicle lost power completely. It was taken to a Rivian service center on July 29, 2025, and was not returned until August 15, 2025 — a total of 17 days out of service. Rivian’s technicians found multiple faults in the HV battery pack and replaced it. Rivian’s own repair notes state that its engineering team requested the front drive unit also be replaced “due to the nature of the failure with the HV battery pack” — i.e., Rivian attributed the drive unit damage to the battery pack failure, not to an independent defect. Both the HV battery pack and front drive unit were replaced under warranty. Second incident (June 29, 2026, approx. 16,256 miles): After charging at a Tesla Supercharger, the vehicle displayed a “Rivian thermal system fault” warning, which indicated driving could continue. While subsequently driving on the highway, the vehicle displayed a “reduced performance” warning, followed by an “all-wheel drive system fault” warning. A loud popping sound was then heard from the rear drive unit, accompanied by visible and smell of smoke in the vehicle. The driver safely pulled over. All electrical systems malfunctioned in the same manner as the first incident. The vehicle is currently undergoing diagnosis; based on the symptoms (identical to the first incident) and Rivian’s own causal link between battery failure and drive unit damage in the first incident, it is possible the HV battery pack is again involved, this time in connection with the rear drive unit.

The half shaft axel on My Rivian R1T broke in under 6000K miles. Rivian tried hard to deny it, but did finally concede and fix it. But upon return there is still something wrong with the drive train.

While scheduling service for NHTSA recall No. 25V-387/FSAM-1693 (Front Turn Signal Lamps malfunction that leads to no fulfillment of FMVSS 108 requirements) I was refused correction of the recall by the Rivian Miami Service Center rep (Service Advisor Joel). I was informed that Rivian has informed the Service Advisors that this recall will only be performed on already malfunctioning lamps or in cold weather areas (car is in Miami). However, none of this is defined in the recall notice sent, nor in the Rivian and NHTSA recall database. Requested written confirmation by Rivian of this directive to both the Service Advisor and Service Representative but neither had one. The advisor mentioned he had seen one in the past but does not recall where. Meanwhile, Rivian is refusing addressing the recall on my vehicle.

The manufacturer service tech advised that the clevis mount holding the front passenger suspension in place was missing a weld to the frame (the attached work order says it was re-welded, but when asked they said the weld was missing). This resulted in creaking noises through the cab when turning.

We leased this R1T from Polestar Boston, though we live in Vt, because it was assured to us that in the event of a warranty or recall issue, Polestar Boston would pick up the car and tow to the service center for the repair. Now with this turn signal recall, the gentelman on the phone told me no... that they will not come repair the recall. That if we want it fixed, we have to drive the 4 hours to Boston and they will change the blinkers for us. What legal rights do we have here? thank you

Manufacturer communications
A bulletin sent by a manufacturer to its dealers. Not a recall, and repairs are not necessarily free.
Rivian is launching a technical service bulletin for some model year 2022-2026 R1T and R1S vehicles that might have an audible rattle originating from the B-pillar area when driving on rough road surfaces. Upon customer complaint, Rivian will apply anti-rattle tape near both 1st row seat belt retractors to prevent rattling.
Rivian is launching a technical service bulletin for some model year 2025-2026 R1T and R1S vehicles that were manufactured with exterior door handles that, under some conditions, could squeak when the handles present or retract. The ability to open the door and enter or exit the vehicle is not affected. Upon customer complaint of a squeaking exterior door handle, Rivian will upgrade a pin inside all 4 exterior door handles.
Rivian is launching a technical service bulletin for some model year 2022-2026 R1T and R1S vehicles that may be prone to noise and/or vibration from the door areas, particularly buzzing and rattling sounds. This results in a perceived quality issue. Upon customer complaint of noise from any door trim panel, Rivian will modify several door trim panel components to alleviate the condition.
ENGINE
Rivian is initiating a customer satisfaction campaign for some model year 2025 R1T and R1S vehicles that are susceptible to water contaminating the refrigerant system. Water contamination may cause premature failure of some refrigerant system components or, in some cases, cause a loss of HV isolation. A loss of HV isolation could cause the vehicle to enter a reduced performance safe state mode, and a "Limited Performance Mode" indicator light to illuminate on the driver display. Rivian will inspect the refrigerant system for water contamination and, if necessary, replace affected refrigerant system components. Rivian is launching this campaign for customer satisfaction and to ensure the quality of Rivian vehicles.
Rivian is launching a Rivian Service Bulletin for some model year 2025-2026 R1T and R1S vehicles. These vehicles may have been built with a visible gap at the front of the wireless charging mat, resulting in a perceived quality issue. Upon customer complaint of a gap at the front of the wireless charging mat, Rivian will modify or replace components as necessary.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
SMS sent to LFP owners impacted by SOC Imbalance alerting them that their efforts have resolved their HV Battery Pack concern and may charge normally.
Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
Compare model years
Complaint and recall counts across every year of this model
Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
