Recalls, owner-reported complaints, investigations and safety data

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.

Rear Toe Link May Separate

Opened May 26, 2026

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received two Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs) reporting left rear toe link separation in certain Model Year (MY) 2023-2024 Rivian R1S vehicles. Both VOQs report component separation while driving, causing the vehicles to swerve across multiple lanes of traffic. One incident resulted in a collision with an adjacent vehicle and roadside barrier.  In both separations, the bolt that maintains the integrity of the toe link fractured. Evidence collected from the complaint vehicles included repair histories, onboard video, imagery of the damaged components, and a police accident report. The two vehicles with reported separation have different vehicle histories. One vehicle received prior service and the other was involved in a previous collision. In both instances, the vehicles operated for multiple months and thousands of miles of usage with no apparent problems between the previous service or the previous collision and the failures that prompted this investigation. Rivian recognized the subject toe link joint’s sensitivity to service procedures in March of 2025 in its updated service procedures. In January 2026 through recall 26V-003, Rivian extended the improved repair procedure to vehicles that received toe link service prior to the March 2025 improvement. ODI is opening a Preliminary Evaluation (PE) to (1) assess the sensitivity of the rear toe link joint to foreseeable road and service conditions, (2) compare the physical failure evidence from the two VOQs to  identify apparent similarities and potential differences, (3) evaluate Rivian’s current toe link repair procedure, and (4) assess the in-field subject population’s toe links conditions. On February 15, 2025, Rivian performed Field Service Action FSAM-1507 on my 2024 Rivian R1T at 11,590 miles. Hub-to-knuckle fasteners were found loose in four structural locations. This was identified as a safety-related field service action. A second field service action, FSAM-1678 (front halfshaft NVH washers), was performed November 3–4, 2025. I am reporting both actions to create a federal record of the structural safety deficiencies in this vehicle.

2024 Rivian R1T has a persistent pulling defect and safety hazard. Four repair attempts at Rivian Denver Service Center all failed: 1. Jul 16, 2025 - WO-1452784, 16,117 mi: Alignment performed. Defect continued. 2. Aug 11, 2025 - WO-1530133, 16,936 mi: Same-day return. Second alignment. Defect continued. 3. Nov 3-4, 2025 - WO-1745098, 20,520 mi: Rivian lead technician ride-along confirmed pull in writing: "After 2 alignments, vehicle is still pulling. Confirmed by lead technician." Tire rotation attempted. Defect continued. 4. Dec 22-23, 2025 - WO-1869730, 22,136 mi: Rivian documented "No Problem Found" after 2.5hr alignment + 20-min test drive, then waived $690 in labor. I have video of a Rivian advisor verbally confirming the pull in Nov 2025, directly contradicting this finding. Pulling caused premature wear on all 4 tires by 20,774 mi (Rivian confirmed, WO-1765303). Additional safety defects: - FSAM-1507: Hub-to-knuckle fasteners loose in 4 locations (Feb 2025, 11,590 mi) - FMVSS 108 headlamp federal violation corrected Jul 2025 - FSAM-1678: Front halfshaft washers replaced Nov 2025 - 12V battery failure limited vehicle to 61 MPH while driving (Oct 2024, 8,215 mi) Vehicle returned May 27, 2026 due to unresolved safety defect. Please investigate this defect on 2024 Rivian R1T vehicles.

Fuel system
Filed Mar 3, 2026

While traveling at highway speed on Interstate 95, the vehicle experienced a complete and sudden loss of propulsion. The vehicle would not respond to the Vehicle Restart function. The driver was able to safely pull to the shoulder from the right lane. The vehicle was towed to a Rivian service center, where technicians identified a low-voltage event matching a known Rivian engineering investigation. Rivian confirmed no current repair exists and that engineering is actively working on software improvements. The vehicle was returned unrepaired after 13 days. Rivian also replaced the 12V battery under warranty at a prior service visit in July 2025 for a related electrical system defect. Two field service actions (FSAM-1507, FSAM-1794) have also been performed on this vehicle.

The entertainment and gauge cluster displays begin to slow down and stutter, eventually leading to a full reboot. This causes the ADAS view, as well as the blind spot cameras, and reverse camera to display a still image, even while the vehicle is moving, or display no image at all. Also, if this happens while Highway Drive Assist is active, the state of the system is not displayed and an audible chime is played.

I believed my car had a problem with the seals of the windows allowing severe wind noise. After attempted repair the problem persisted and, on closer inspection, it became evident that the driver side door is mis-installed and crooked. Rivian attempted to reprair this and only made it worse. The amount of wind/road noise that is coming in now is as if the windows was open. The door frame vibrates and whistles at speed. The mobile tech doesn't feel this is repairable but Rivian won't take responsibility for it. They have denied my BBB claim and I am pursuing a lemon lawyer.

Rivian alerted me that there was a “service action” related to the hub, and while waiting for that appointment, the hub came loose while driving and began grinding against the brakes and went into full system shutdown. The truck needed to be towed and the hub and brakes needed to be replaced. The truck was undrivae while driving at highway speeds and could have crashed. When questioned, the service center reiterated that this was “not a recall” but simply a head up. The repairs were covered under warranty.

Manufacturer communications

A bulletin sent by a manufacturer to its dealers. Not a recall, and repairs are not necessarily free.

RSB-93-26-002-1

Rivian is launching a technical service bulletin for some model year 2022-2026 R1T and R1S vehicles that might have an audible rattle originating from the B-pillar area when driving on rough road surfaces. Upon customer complaint, Rivian will apply anti-rattle tape near both 1st row seat belt retractors to prevent rattling.

RSB-56-26-001-2

STRUCTURE:BODY

Rivian is launching a technical service bulletin for some model year 2022-2024 R1T and R1S vehicles that could have inadequate adhesion between the outer door panel and an internal reinforcement. On affected doors, the exterior door handle might not sit flush with the outer door panel or might move slightly when the handle is operated. Upon customer complaint, Rivian will apply new adhesive between the reinforcement and the outer panel.

RSB-56-25-002-2

STRUCTURE:BODY

Rivian is launching a technical service bulletin for some model year 2022-2024 R1T and R1S vehicles that might have bubbles in the painted surfaces below the exterior door handles. On these vehicles, adhesive that secures an inner door reinforcement could allow contaminants to corrode the inner surface of the door over time, affecting the visual appearance of the door surface. Upon customer complaint, Rivian will repair and refinish the affected door(s). Note: This document supersedes RSB-56-25-002-1. Revision 2 updates the instructions for using the air wedge and inspecting the door panel prior to use.

RSB-86-26-001-1

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Rivian is launching a technical service bulletin for some model year 2022-2024 R1 vehicles that may have ultrasonic sensors detached from the front fascia mounting area. After detachment, the ultrasonic sensor may become dislodged and hang inside the front fascia, causing customer notifications for sensor issues and potential sensor damage. Upon ultrasonic sensor detachment, Rivian will perform an ultrasonic sensor repair to secure the sensor to the front fascia.

RSB-26-26-001-1

VISIBILITY/WIPER

Rivian is launching a technical service bulletin for some model year 2022-2024 R1T and R1S vehicles that may be susceptible to water ingress in the front HVAC assembly. This may result in damp or soggy carpets in the front of the vehicle. Upon customer complaint of wet carpet in the front of the vehicle, Rivian will inspect the component and replace any damaged parts, and reseal the case to prevent further water ingress.

RSB-93-26-001-1

Rivian is launching a technical service bulletin for some model year 2022-2026 R1T and R1S vehicles that may be prone to noise and/or vibration from the door areas, particularly buzzing and rattling sounds. This results in a perceived quality issue. Upon customer complaint of noise from any door trim panel, Rivian will modify several door trim panel components to alleviate the condition.

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
