The defect: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: MINI VANS. THE CONNECTING ENDS OF THE FUEL FEED AND RETURN HOSES IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT CAN "SETTLE" OVER TIME WHICH COULD CAUSE THE FASTENING CLAMPS TO LOSE THEIR TIGHT FIT AND PERMIT FUEL TO SEEP OUT AT THE HOSE CONNECTION.
The risk: FUEL LEAKAGE IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.
The remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FUEL FEED AND RETURN HOSES.

The defect: THESE STEERING WHEELS AND INCLUDE A UNIVERSAL JOINT WHICH IS ATTACHED TO STEERING SHAFTS AND SECURED BY LOCKING BOLTS. THE UNIVERSAL JOINT'S UPPER LOCKING BOLT WAS NOT SUFFICIENTLY TORQUED DURING MANUFACTURE, AND CAN EVENTUALLY LOOSEN.
The risk: IF THE UPPER LOCKING BOLT HOLDING THE STEERING ASSEMBLY'S UNIVERSAL JOINT LOOSENS, IT CAN RENDER THE STEERING SYSTEM INOPERATIVE AND CAUSE AN ACCIDENT.
The remedy: DEALERS WILL REMOVE THE PRESENT UNIVERSAL UPPER LOCKING BOLT, INSTALL A NEW ONE, AND TORQUE IT TO SPECIFICATIONS.

The defect: THE HANDLE OF THE EMERGENCY BRAKE CONTAINS A TORSION SPRING WHICH IS DESIGNED TO ENSURE THAT THE LOCKING MECHANISM REMAINS FIRMLY ENGAGED UPON APPLICATION OF THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. SOME OF THESE SPRINGS MAY HAVE BEEN IMPROPERLY INSTALLED.
The risk: AN IMPROPERLY INSTALLED SPRING CAN CAUSE THE EMERGENCYBRAKE TO RELEASE. IF THE VEHICLE IS NOT PROPERLY SECURED, IT COULD SET ITSELFIN MOTION AND CAUSE AN ACCIDENT.
The remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A LONGER TENSION SPRING TO PROVIDE SUFFICIENT TENSION.

FUEL LINE LEAKS AND LEARNT THERE IS A RECALL IN CANADA WITH OWNERS COMPLAINED OF THE SAME ISSUES. DEFECTIVE FUEL LINE SYSTEM WAS INSTALLED.

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1993 VOLKSWAGEN EUROVAN. WHILE DRIVING 5 MPH, THE ENGINE ON ONE SIDE OF THE VEHICLE BECAME COMPLETELY LOOSE AND FELL TO THE GROUND. THE PAN, WHICH SUPPORTED THE ENGINE, FELL ONTO THE STREET AND DRAGGED ON THE GROUND. AN ENGINE BRACKET, TO WHICH THE ENGINE IS BOLTED, NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT NOTHING COULD BE DONE. THE VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY PARKED AT AN AUTO REPAIR SHOP AWAITING THE PARTS FOR THE REPAIR. THE PARTS WOULD COST $450; HOWEVER, THE REPAIR SHOP IS GIVING HIM A DISCOUNT. THE MANUFACTURER WOULD NOT ASSIST. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 131,000.

THE VEHICLE WAS SERVICED FOR NHTSA RECALL# 00V039000, REPLACING PART NUMBER 701201363E FUEL LINE, FEED AND PART NUMBER 701201363C FUEL LINE, RETURN. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HIS 1995 HAS THE SAME PARTS ON IT, BUT ARE NOT EXPERIENCING ANY PROBLEMS AS OF YET. THE CONTACT STATED THAT VOLKSWAGEN SHOULD RECALL THE 1995 AND ANY VEHICLES THAT ARE USING THESE PARTS. THE CONTACT WANTS TO GET HIS 1995 REPAIRED BUT VOLKSWAGEN WILL NOT SELL HIM THE PART.

WHILE MERGING ONTO THE HIGHWAY STEERING WHEEL FAILED. CONSUMER APPLIED THE BRAKES AND PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. VEHICLE CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE. CONSUMER WAS NOT ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, AND VEHICLE WENT DOWN INTO AN EMBANKMENT AND FLIPPED OVER THREE TIMES. THE DRIVER WAS NOT INJURED. CONSUMER HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION, AND MECHANIC WAS NOT ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. CONSUMER INFORMED THE DRIVER THAT RECALL 94V058000 APPLIED TO THIS VEHICLE. HOWEVER, MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT THIS RECALL WAS NOT FOR THIS VEHICLE. *AK

FUEL/TEMPERATURE GAUGE ONLY WORKS OCCASIONALLY. I WAS QUOTED A PRICE OF $700.00 TO REPLACE AT DEALER SEVERAL YEARS AGO BUT I KNOW OF THREE OTHER VW EUROVANS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM AND I JUST FOUND AN ARTICLE STATING THAT REPLACEMENT DOESN'T SOLVE THE PROBLEM, THE EXISTING BOARD HAS TO BE SOLDERED. I THINK VW SHOULD COVER THIS AS IT IS DANGEROUS FOR ALL CONCERNED TO TRAVEL WITHOUT KNOWING THE CAR TEMPERATURE OR HOW MUCH FUEL THERE IS. *NLM
