Recalls, owner-reported complaints, investigations and safety data

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

The defect: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2005-2008 Audi A4 Sedan, A4 Avant, S4 Avant and S4 Sedan, 2007-2008 RS4 Sedan, 2004 RS4 Cabriolet, 2007-2009 A4 Cabriolet and S4 Cabriolet, 2005-2011 A6 Sedan, 2006-2011 A6 Avant, and 2007-2011 S6 Sedan vehicles. These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger frontal air bag, these inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.
The risk: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
The remedy: Audi has notified owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag with an alternate remedy part, free of charge. The recall began June 29, 2018. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 69R7. Note: This recall supersedes recalls 16V382, 17V032 and 18V004 and includes vehicles that may have had their air bag previously replaced under one of those campaigns.

TAKATA RECALL -- SINCE OCTOBER 2018, I HAVE BEEN RECEIVING MESSAGES FROM AUDI THAT THE REPAIR IS AVAILABLE AND THAT I SHOULD SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT IMMEDIATELY FOR MY SAFETY AND THE SAFETY OF MY FAMILY. SINCE THEN, I HAVE MADE SEVERAL APPOINTMENTS WITH MY LOCAL DEALER ONLY TO HAVE EACH OF THEM CANCELED DUE TO THE AIRBAG BEING ON BACKORDER OR OTHERWISE UNAVAILABLE. ON JANUARY 24, I CALLED BOTH MY LOCAL DEALER, AUDI EATONTOWN, AND AUDI CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE. THE FORMER TOLD ME THAT THERE ISN'T A SINGLE REPLACEMENT AIRBAG IN NJ WHILE THE LATTER THEN EXTENDED THE LACK OF AIRBAG REPLACEMENTS TO THE ENTIRE US.

TAKATA RECALL - I HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED THEY NEED TO REPLACE MY 'PASSENGER SIDE' AIRBAG (DRIVER SIDE WAS REPLACED ALREADY), BUT THE PARTS HAVE NOT BEEN AVAILABLE FOR ABOUT 1 YEAR. I GET CARDS IN THE MAIL TELLING ME I NEED TO REPLACE IT, BUT THE DEALERS DO NOT HAVE THE PART. EVERYONE SAYS BECAUSE OF THE LOCATION, TEXAS, AND THE AGE OF THE CAR, 2009 MODEL, THIS CAR IS A 'PRIORITY', BUT I CANNOT GET THE PART TO HAVE IT REPLACED.

THE GLASS IS SEPARATING FROM THE CANVAS ON MY CONVERTIBLE TOP! I HAVE ATTEMPTED REPAIRS AND READ THOUSANDS OF THREADS IN REGARD TO THIS ISSUE. MY CONCERN IS THAT THE GLASS COULD COME DETACHED FROM THE SOFT TOP AND EITHER INJURE ONE OF MY DAUGHTERS IN THE BACKSEAT OR FLY OUT AND HIT ANOTHER VEHICLE. AUDI IS ATTEMPTING TO CHARGE OVER 5K FOR A NEW TOP-CLAIMING REPLACEMENT IS THE ONLY OPTION. I APPRECIATE SOMEONE LOOKING INTO THIS ISSUE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
