What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2007 BMW 328I, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
Hello I contacted bmw about a recall on my vehicle and made an appointment the gentleman I spoke with at first did the whole recall appointment. He wasn’t there on the day of and the other technician refused to conduct the recall repair and very rudely said to me you either pay $500 for diagnosing or you come pick up your car now otherwise I will charge you $200 daily storage he said the car didn’t start I told him yes of course is due to that recall which caused a meltdown leading to smoke coming in from the vents cutting all power to car . This guy refused to understand the situation and was really rude he said I have til the end of today to pick up the car and he disregard my appointment and refuse to fix it. So I call my AAA tow truck to pick up my vehicle and the refused to release it so now my car isn’t getting fixed and it’s being hold hostage
The contact owns a 2007 BMW 328I. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, there was an abnormally strong burning odor coming from the vehicle. Additionally, the blower motor became inoperable. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that he had personally replaced the blower motor. The contact stated that while servicing the vehicle, he noticed that the wiring underneath the footwell had melted. The contact stated that the vehicle was previously repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V676000 (Electrical System); however, the recall repair failed to prevent the failure. The dealer was contacted and advised the contact that he had to pay for the diagnostic test and the repairs. The vehicle was not yet diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 173,000.
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
passenger restraint malfunction warning light has been on. It is a common problem with many BMW's and they did not issue a recall prior to 2009 models. The repair is quite costly and it seems to be a computer error that is not actually an issue at all
Front Seat Passenger Side Seatbelt warning indicator activates when no person is in passenger seat. Airbag warning light illuminates even when there is a passenger in the seat. I see numerous complaints about the same/similar issues in your data base, but seemingly no resolution or recall. My car is a convertible. I note from other complaints on your website that a related recall was initiated for my year make model but it did not apply to convertible version of this model. That is irresponsible and unacceptable.
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owned a 2007 BMW 328i. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V119000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The contact stated that while driving approximately 60 MPH, there was whitish grey smoke coming from the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the residence where it was parked, and there was smoke coming from under the hood. The contact pushed the vehicle away from the residence and from structures and became aware that there were heat bubbles on the hood of the vehicle and called 9-1-1. The Police and Fire Department arrived, and the firemen axed the hood and extinguished the fire under the hood. The fire department was able to extinguish the fire. The Police and Fire Department filed reports; however, the reports were not available. There were no injuries. The vehicle was towed to a tow lot. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 198,000.
we have taken the car to the dealership for the recall and was told they do not have the parts and also wouldn't know how to fix it. every time the car turns on, you can smell the melting of the plastic. it smells bad and am worried every time im driving about a fire. before the recall came out, we had asked about the unknown smell of something burning and was told it was "normal"
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
STEERING WHEEL IS LOCKING UP WHICH CAUSES THE CAR NOT TO START. BMW HAS A SERVICE BULLETIN ON IT BUT IT HAS NOT BEEN RECALLED
MY CAR BURST INTO FLAMES AHILE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY. THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM WENT OFF IMMEDIATELY AND I WAS TRAPPED IN CAR. A NEARBY PASSENGER BROKE MY WINDOW TO ME OUT. IF IT WASN'T FOR THE MAN I WOULD HAVE LOST MY LIFE!!
Interior & seats
Reports naming seats, latches, locks, linkages and interior fittings.

THE FRONT PASSENGER AIR BAG SEAT OCCUPANCY SENSOR (OC3) MAT HAS FAILED IN MY CAR. BMW EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON THE E90 SEDAN AND E91 WAGON VERSION OF THE 2007 328I BUT NOT THE E93 CONVERTIBLE (WHICH I HAVE) THE SEAT COMPONENTS ARE IDENTICAL ON ALL 3 MODEL VERSIONS OF THAT YEAR. WHY IS THE SAFETY OF E93 PASSENGERS LESS IMPORTANT THAN THE PASSENGERS IN THE E90 AND E91 WHEN THEY SHARE THE SAME SENSOR? REPAIR COST IS $1,200 FOR A SENSOR BMW KNOWS WILL FAIL. I WANT THE 2007 E93 TO BE INCLUDED IN THE EXTENDED WARRANTY SI B01 09 14
Body & structure
Reports naming the vehicle structure, frame, body panels, doors, hood and trim.
From owner reports, verbatim
My vehicle caught on fire while parked and unoccupied. Fire started in the engine compartment.
I was driving just my 3rd day of having my car and i come outside and its wrecked someone hit the driver side front panel and bumper
Seat belts
Reports naming seat belts, buckles, retractors and pretensioners.

The contact owns a 2007 BMW 328I. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, he smelled fuel within the interior of the vehicle and observed low RPM's before the vehicle lost motive power and stalled. The contact was able to coast to the shoulder of the road, where, after visual inspection, he observed fuel leaking within the rear driver's side wheel well. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but was unable to help. The failure mileage was 165,000.
Unknown, BMW had to replace an eccentric shaft sensor, valve cover fuel pump sensing unit after check engine light appeared. The repair was significant and appeared to be a huge safety hazard from my understanding. Please look into this matter. Thank you
Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.
From owner reports, verbatim
HEADLIGHTS. FIRE HAZARD BECAUSE OF BRITTLE AND BARE WIRING INSIDE OF HEADLIGHT HOUSING. Confirmation is as simple as looking inside of headlight to change a bulb. The vehicle does not set any codes to make you aware of wiring issue.
I was driving just my 3rd day of having my car and i come outside and its wrecked someone hit the driver side front panel and bumper

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 BMW 328I. WHILE THE CONTACT WAS ATTEMPTING TO START THE VEHICLE, IT LOST ALL ELECTRICAL POWER. THE CONTACT HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALER (HENDRICK BMW NORTH LAKE, 10720 NORTH LAKE AUTO PLAZA BLVD, CHARLOTTE, NC 28269). THE DEALER DIAGNOSED THAT THE DISTRIBUTION BOX HAD OVERHEATED AND MELTED, WHICH WOULD BE AN OUT OF POCKET EXPENSE FOR THE CONTACT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND STATED THAT EVEN THOUGH THE VEHICLE WAS A 2007, IT WAS MANUFACTURED IN DECEMBER OF 2006. AS A RESULT, THE VEHICLE WAS NOT EILIGIBLE TO BE REPAIRED PER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 13V044000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM). THE MANUFACTURER CONTINUED TO STATE THAT EVEN THOUGH IT WAS TWO MONTHS OUTSIDE OF THE RECALL ELIGIBILITY DATE, THEY STILL WOULD NOT HONOR IT IF IT HAD JUST BEEN ONE DAY OUTSIDE OF THE TIMEFRAME. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 156,000. *TT UPDATED 11/7/18*JB

DRIVING 30 MPH TPMS LIGHT CAME ON INDICATING FRONT DRIVER TIRE LOW, GOT HOME AND TOOK TRIED TO INFLATE TIRE, WITH NO LUCK. TOOK TIRE OFF AND THE INSIDE TIRE WALL HAD BLOWN OUT. 1 MONTH LATER THE SAME BLOW OUT OCCURRED ON PASSENGER REAR TIRE. THERE WAS GOOD TREAD ON BOTH TIRES. DON'T KNOW IF IT MATTERS, BUT BOTH TIRES WHERE RUN FLAT. I HAVE CONTACTED BRIDGESTONE, BUT NO RESPONSE. I'M ATTACHING PICTURES.

Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
I WENT IN TO HAVE A ROUTINE OIL CHANGE AND WAS TOLD TO HAVE A BRAKE FLUSH BY THE DEALERSHIP. AFTER LEAVING DEALERSHIP I STARTED EXPERIENCING PROBLEMS WITH STEERING AND BRAKES. THEY INFORMED ME TO BRING CAR BACK IN TO RECTIFY THE ISSUE. AS I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY THE BRAKE SYSTEM ON THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY FAILED AND THE CAR HAS NOW BECOME INOPERABLE. THEY ARE REFUSING TO FIX IT STATING THAT THE ISSUE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE OIL CHANGE AND BRAKE FLUSH BUT WOULD MOST LIKELY BE A PERSISTENT VALVE ISSUES WITH THIS CAR. THE CAR HAS TWO RECALLS IN THE PAST WEEK AND YET THE DEALERSHIP REFUSES TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. THIS CAR IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE AS I ALMOST GOT INTO AN ACCIDENT ON MD 495 HEADING TOWARD SILVER SPRING. I HAVE TRIED TO WORK DIRECTLY WITH BMW OF SILVER SPRING AND BMW OF NORTH AMERICA AND THEY ARE REFUSING TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE.
LEFT WORK AT 4:30PM ON 01/06/2016, AS WE TURNED OUT OF PARKING LOT MY 2007 BMW 328I JUST DIED IN MID TRAFFIC. THIS OCCURENCE HAPPENED TWICE BEFORE BUT STALLED MULTIPLE TIME ON WAY BACK HOME. ON THE 6TH OF JAN, THE CAR BEGAN TO OVERHEAT AND BURNING OF BATTERY SMELL. CAR WAS TOWED AS ID CODES WERE CHECKED AND ALL SIGNS HAVE POINTED TO SYSTEM FAILURE. UPON FURTHER REVIEW, 6 OPEN RECALLS WAS RESEARCHED USING MULTIPLE VIN REPORT SITES PAID AND FREE INCLUDING BMWUSA.COM/SAFETY RECALL. WE WERE THEN TOLD TO CONTACT THE BMW CONSUMER AND WE WERE TOLD THAT IF THERE IS NO WARRANTY DUE TO PAST MILAGE, RECALLS WERE NOT OBLIGATED BY BMW CONSUMER. I HAVE ALREADY CONTACTED FABBRINI LAW OFFICE HERE IN CHICAGO REGARDING OUR FEDERAL RIGHTS IN BEING IN A SAFE CAR. HOW MANY LINKS DO WE NEED TO POST IN WHICH STALLING AND ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS HAVE BEEN NOTED ON BMWS OWN COMPANY WEBSITE. WE SIMPLY ASK THAT BMW CONSUMER LLC LISTEN TO THIS COMPLAINT LIKE THE MANY OTHERS WHO ARE BEING PUT IN UNSAFE VEHICLES AND WE ASK THAT YOU APPLY YOUR THREE PRONG RULE REGARDING SAFETY HAZARDS SUCH AS THESE THAT WARRANT A REFUND WITH DEAPPRECIATION ADDED, REPLACEMENT OF VEHICLE OR SIMPLY REPAIR THE RECALLS THAT HAVE BEEN NOTED IN THE LAST DECADE AFFECTING MORE THAN MILLIONS WHO ARE LOYAL TO YOUR PRODUCT. WE INTIALLY HAD A 2005 BMW 325I THAT HAD RECALLS AND WE WERE NOT HELPED THEN AND TRADED VEHICLES FOR YET ANOTHER BMW WITH THE HOPES OF BETTER LUCK.

WHEN I START A TRIP MY CAR MAKES AN STRONG NOISE ON THE BACK. I'M PRETTY SURE IT COMES FROM THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL AXLE-FINAL DRIVE ASSY. MY CAR HAS 123206 MILLES. I USUALLY MAKE ANY MAINTENANCE ON TIME. I'M REALLY WORRY ABOUT THIS STRONG NOISE, CAUSE THIS CAR IS DRIVING EVERYDAY BY MY WIFE WITH OUR BABY INSIDE.

Transmission
Reports naming the automatic or manual transmission, including shifting behaviour, shudder, slipping and transmission control modules.
From owner reports, verbatim
I OWN A 2007 BMW 328I WITH 21,000 MILES ON IT. IN JULY 2009 I WAS BACKING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY WHEN THE CAR LOST ALL STEERING POWER, THE ACCELERATOR NO LONGER FUNCTIONED, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, & THE KEY WAS UNABLE TO BE EJECTED. A BMW DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE ISSUE, SO THEY SAID THERE WAS NOT A PROBLEM WITH THE CAR. IN AUG 2009, AFTER TURNING THE CAR ON, THE CAR BEGAN TO SHAKE AND IT POWERED DOWN. AGAIN, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, AND THE KEY WAS NOT ABLE TO BE EJECTED. THE SAME BMW DEALERSHIP WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM, BUT THEY SAID THEY INSTALLED SOFTWARE UPDATES. IN SEPT 2010 I WAS DRIVING THE CAR AND AT A LOW SPEED WHEN THE CAR LOST ALL STEERING CONTROL, THE ACCELERATOR DID NOTHING WHEN I PUSHED DOWN ON IT. I HAD TO PUSH THE CAR OUT OF THE ROAD. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS STILL ON, AND THE KEY WOULD NOT EJECT ITSELF. MINUTES LATER, I WAS ABLE TO GET THE KEY OUT, AND AFTER I RESTARTED THE CAR, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT OFF. (I HAVE PHOTOS OF IT ON). THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DIFFERENT BMW DEALERSHIP--BUT ONCE AGAIN, THEY WERE UNABLE TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE. THEY TESTED THE FUEL--THE FUEL WAS FINE. THEY TOLD ME THEY HAD INCENTIVE TO FIND A PROBLEM WITH THE CAR SO THAT THEY COULD BE PAID. I HAVE CONTACTED BMW N. AMERICA SEVERAL TIMES, BUT TO NO AVAIL. AT ONE POINT, I ASKED WHAT IT WOULD TAKE FOR THEM TO FIX THE CAR-- PERSONAL INJURY? PROPERTY DAMAGE? THE BMW REP SAID NO--BUT AGREED THAT I'D JUST HAVE TO WAIT IT OUT AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS. AFTER SENDING A LETTER TO BMW N. AMERICA THE CUSTOMER SERVICE REP SAID I WOULD NEED A LOCAL DEALER TO CONSENT TO HAVING AN ENGINEER LOOK AT MY CAR. HE SAID HE WOULD CONTACT THE DEALER TO SEE IF THEY WOULD GRANT ME CONSENT. HE NEVER CALLED. I HAD TO CALL ON MY OWN AND BEG THEM TO HAVE AN ENGINEER LOOK AT MY CAR. THE ENGINEER WAS UNABLE TO EXPLAIN WHY MY CAR KEEPS POWERING DOWN. HE DID HOWEVER INSTALL A SOFTWARE UPDATE. BMW WON'T HELP ME, SO MY ONLY RECOURSE IS TO SELL IT. *TR
2007 BMW 328I COUPE, 6-SPEED MANUAL FAILS TO GO INTO 1ST OCCASIONALLY. I HAVE BROUGHT IT BACK TO THE SHOP 4 TIMES AND IT STILL SOMETIMES WILL NOT ENGAGE 1ST GEAR WITH THE CLUTCH PRESSED ALL THE WAY DOWN. THE ISSUE HAS CAUSED ME TO BE STALLED AT AN INTERSECTION TWICE AND IN REVERSE ONCE BY ACCIDENT DUE TO THE PANIC OF NOT ENGAGING 1 ST GEAR. THIS WAS ESCALATED TO THE REGIONAL SERVICE ADVISOR FOR THE SOUTHEAST AND HE STATE THE CAR IS DESIGNED TO DO THIS??? THE ARE COMPLAINTS ALL OVER THE WEB ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND IT IS DANGEROUS! *TR

Heating & air conditioning
Reports naming the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system.
From owner reports, verbatim
MY 2007 328I HAS BEEN IN THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT A TOTAL OF 4 TIMES (THAT I HAVE PAPERWORK ON, IT MIGHT BE MORE). I HAVE HAD MAJOR MECHANICAL PROBLEMS WITH THE MOST RECENT BEING ELECTRICAL. MY KEY WILL NOT OPEN ANY OF THE DOORS, I HAVE TO USE THE VALET KEY TO GET INSIDE. ONCE I GET INSIDE THE BUTTON ON THE DASH THAT OPENS AND LOCKS THE DOORS WAS UNRESPONSIVE AS WELL. WHEN THIS STARTED THE DRIVERS SIDE MIRROR ALSO BECAME UNRESPONSIVE AND WOULD NOT ADJUST, I CAN'T ADJUST IT TO SEE THE ROAD AND HAVE ALMOST BEEN IN 2 ACCIDENTS. THE SAME DAY THE AIR CONDITIONING, WHICH I HAD SET ON 60, TURNED ITSELF TO 84 BLOWING FULL BLAST. THAT IS ACTUALLY THE SECOND TIME THIS YEAR THAT THE AIR CONDITIONING HAS AUTOMATICALLY TURNED TO THE HEATER. SHORT LIST OF OTHER ISSUES: RECURRENT BREAK SQUEAKING, OIL SENSOR AND ENGINE HARNESS WIRES BREAKING, AND PROBLEMS ACCELERATING. THE COMPUTER SOFTWARE MALFUNCTIONED AS WELL (ANOTHER ELECTRICAL ISSUE WHICH WAS CAUSING THE CAR TO MALFUNCTION). AFTER THE BRAKE PADS & SENSORS WERE REPLACED, THE BRAKES SOUND THE SAME TO THIS DAY, HORRIBLY SQUEAKY ALMOST GRINDING. THE FRONT DRIVER & PASSENGER WINDOWS HAVE A MYSTERIOUS ELECTRICAL MALFUNCTION. THEY WILL CEASE TO GO UP OR DOWN. I HOLD THE WINDOW BUTTON IN THE "UP" POSITION, THE WINDOW WILL ROLL UP AN INCH THEN STOP. I WILL HAVE TO DO THIS SEVERAL MORE TIMES BEFORE THE WINDOW WILL GO UP OR DOWN. MY CAR GOES IN AGAIN TOMORROW AM. THIS TIME I EVEN MENTIONED THAT IF I DID HAVE PASSENGERS IN THE VEHICLE AND WE HAD GOTTEN IN AN ACCIDENT, OR WORSE YET THE CAR CATCHES ON FIRE, MY PASSENGERS WOULD BE TRAPPED. THE SERVICE ADVISOR DIDN'T SEEM TO CARE. I CAN'T DRIVE MY FRIENDS OR FAMILY ANYWHERE FOR FEAR THEY WILL BE STUCK IN THE VEHICLE IF AN ACCIDENT OCCURRED. AS WELL, I'M NOT GOING TO ASK MY PARENTS, WHO ARE IN THEIR 50'S, TO CRAWL THROUGH A WINDOW TO GET IN OR OUT OF MY VEHICLE. MY CAR HAS BEEN OUT OF COMMISSION FOR ME AT LEAST 30 DAYS SINCE I'VE OWNED IT. *TR
