What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2009 BMW 328I, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words

From owner reports, verbatim
One recall was for air bag deployed I had the light for it on but it was on when I got it the original owner said it popped on him well he was parked and he never fixed it or did anything ... The other was a part of the computer pretty much in charge of cooling the car down it can make fire from melting and cause unfixable/ to constant issues .... Well my hole engine stopped working it was getting too hot miss firing coolent mixing with oil and started to smoke it was white smoke that came out didn't smell like anything crazy maybe mostly coolent and pretty much it had electric issues since I got it so the recall issue makes sense so I took it in to bmw Riverside they said they will fix all that and contact me it's been almost 2 weeks I live in my car I'm disabled and a mom I can't even go drive and see my child over this I have no income disabled type thing and no word what's wrong they said they might charge me a few of 287 but I'm disabled no income yet so that's out it tells me it will be fixed free and if the dealer won't fix the electric system on everything in the car and not charge me later like they said they will then I want to sue big time and if that's not dun when clearly safety was in danger fire issues and crap I want the same car but a new one off the lot not brand new car or fix then I'm sueing for my losses that simple
I was driving my car when all of a sudden the lights in the odometer started flickering and the car started putting and then shut off. Basically broke down on me. I cannot get it to stay on it feels like it has no power.

My car still sits there causing injury to my livilyhood I've missed almost 1year of work I live in the Sierra's where it snows I can't get to work with no car!

Car doesn’t hold a battery Wants to start 2% of the time Engine shook the pulley off so have troubles steering It’s under recall for a few things I would love a new car from bmw because this one is a nightmare the bmw tech advised me not to drive it so have been carless all year pretty much
Seat belts
Reports naming seat belts, buckles, retractors and pretensioners.
From owner reports, verbatim
My mat sensor in my passenger seat is not working properly. Nobody ever really sits in the passenger seat and the light came on stating that someone is sitting in the passenger seat when there is actually nobody sitting in the seat! Which means the airbag will not deploy this seems to be an issue with many 09 bmw 328i vehicle’s! I noticed through research that vehicles prior to said year had same issues and was part of a recall. I feel this should also be part of a new recall with this vehicle year
I have the seatbelt and airbag light illuminated on my car for the passenger. I have researched this issue and it seems to be a common problem on BMWs. It was part of a recall for the 2006 model but nothing past that year. Apparently, it is the sensor that is in the passenger seat that has broken. So the airbag can't sense whether or not a person is occupying that seat.
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
I AM TRYING TO REVIEW IF MY CAR IS ELIGIBLE FOR A RECALL EVALUATION.
WE PULLED INTO A PARKING SPACE, MY HUSBAND HAD HIS FOOT ON THE BRAKE AND THE CAR SURGED UP A CURB, HIT A SIGN AND THEN HIT A LAMP POST AND THE CAR WENT UP THE CEMENT BLOCK. I DON'T REMEMBER MUCH MORE, BUT THER INSURANCE TOTALED THE CAR AND I SUFFERED FROM BRAIN TRAUMA AND 3 BACK DISKS.

ON THE 18TH OF AUGOST 2018 AND IS STILL AT THIS SERVICE STATION BUT ALWAYS COME WITH AN EXCUSE TO WHAT THE PROBLEM IS, I KNOW ITS RECALL RELATED BECAUSE ITS AN ELECTRICAL SITUATION BUT THE ADVISOR AT THE SERVICICE CENTER ALWAYS SAYS ITS NOT RECALL RELATED, AT FIRST THEY SAID THEY FIXED THE LIGHT PROBNLEM BUT THE NOISE CONTINIUED AND THAT THE NOISE CAME FROM THE RADIOS AMPLIFIER, THEN THEY SAID IT CAME FROM TYHE CARS FUSE BOX, NOE THEY SAY ITS THE CARS CAS BUT THA THIS IS NOT RECALL RELATED, I TOLD THEM THAT IF THIS CAS IS THE CODIFIED KEY ENTRY THAT THIS SHOULD BE RECAL;L RELATED BECAUSE ITS A POWER SUPPLY COMPONENT AND THATS AN ELECTRICAL PART SO ITS RECALL RELATED, THEY SAID ITS NOT RELATED BUT THAT THEY HAVE SENT FOR THE PART AND WOULD BE ARRIVING ON THE 2ED OF NOVEMBER OF 2018 AND THEY WILL INFORM ME WHEN THE PART ARRIVES AND THAT THEY ARE GOING TO PAY FOR THE PART AND THE SERVICE.

Code is coming up for passenger seat occupancy sensor which possibly affects airbag deployment in the event of a collision. It has been noted that the passenger seat occupancy sensor has been a part of prior BMW for 2008 and earlier.

WHILE DRIVING AT ABOUT 26MPH, I HEARD AND FELT TWO LOUD CRACKS ON MY LEFT SIDE OF THE CAR. IMMEDIATELY AFTER, MY CAR SLOUCHED ON THE LEFT-HAND SIDE, THE VEHICLE STOPPED SUDDENLY AND BOTH AIRBAGS DEPLOYED. I WAS KNOCKED OUT FOR A WHILE AND WHEN THE AUTHORITIES ARRIVED, WE INVESTIGATED THE AREA AND NOTICED THAT THERE WAS NO COLLISION WITH ANYTHING OR ANYONE, OTHER THAN BOTH OF MY TWO LEFT-SIDE RIMS WERE CRACKED RADIALLY AND THERE WAS DAMAGE TO THE SUSPENSION. IN ADDITION, THE AUTHORITIES CONFIRMED THERE WERE NO POTHOLES, OBSTACLES, OR ANY OTHER OBJECT THAT COULD HAVE PRODUCED THE INCIDENT. *TR

AFTER ONLY 16,000 MILES OF USE, THE WINDSHIELD FIRST APPEARED TO BE COMPLETELY "SANDBLASTED" WITH TINY INDENTATIONS. WHEN DRIVING INTO THE SUN THE GLARE BECOMES SO INTENSE THAT YOU CAN NO LONGER SEE THE ROAD. YOU EFFECTIVELY BECOME BLINDED AND CERTAINLY WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO REACT TO AN EMERGENCY SITUATION. THE SAME SITUATION OCCURS AT NIGHT WHEN DRIVING TOWARDS ONCOMING HEADLIGHTS. THIS PARTICULAR VEHICLE IS RARELY DRIVEN ON HIGHWAYS AND IS ALWAYS GARAGED. BMW DOES NOT CONSIDER THIS TO BE A SAFETY ISSUE, WILL NOT REPLACE THE WINDSHIELD UNDER WARRANTY AND CANNOT GUARANTEE THAT A REPLACEMENT WINDSHIELD WILL NOT PERFORM IN THE SAME MANNER.

2009 BMW 328I. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO ISSUES WITH VEHICLE TIRES *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE CAME EQUIPPED WITH THE EXTRA COST SPORT PACKAGE WHICH INCLUDED 18 INCH SPORT WHEELS AND LOWER PROFILE TIRES THAN THE BASE CAR. THE TIRES WERE MICHELIN RUN FLAT TIRES WHICH WERE INSTALLED BY BMW SO THAT THEY COULD AVOID THE WEIGHT OF THE SPARE TIRE. THERE WAS NO SPARE TIRE, JACK, INFLATION DEVICE OR OTHER BACKUP. THE TIRES HAD ROUTINELY FAILED DUE TO AN INHERENT DEFECT, BEFORE THEIR NORMAL SERVICE LIFE WAS COMPLETE. THE TIRES FAILED IN AS LITTLE AS 8,00 MILES AND A COUPLE HAVE LASTED UNTIL THEY WERE AT 3/32, STILL BEFORE THE NORMAL SERVICE LIFE WAS COMPLETE. THE REASON FOR THE FAILURE, WAS DUE TO A SIDEWALL BULGE THAT DEVELOPED IN THE AREA BETWEEN THE TIRE BEAD AND THE SIDEWALL. AFTER THE BULGE BEGAN, A TEAR DEVELOPED AND AFTER THE TEAR BEGAN, THE TIRES AT THAT POINT OF THE BULGE BECAME UNSAFE TO DRIVE ON AT ANY SPEED. THE CONSUMER HAD TO REPLACE ALL FOUR TIRES AND THE RIGHT REAR TIRE TWICE. *JB
