2006 Chevrolet Cobalt Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Reports by component

Ranked by how many owner reports name each component category

Percentages are of component mentions. A single complaint can name more than one component, so these do not sum to the total complaint count.

I have been experiencing the loss of steering assist. This occurs at any time while driving and that, once assist is lost, a message is displayed on the Driver Information Center (DIC) and a chime sounds. Steering control is maintained in manual mode, but requires greater driver effort at low vehicle speeds. In the next ignition cycle, power assist is typically regained and the DIC message is no longer displayed. The occurs at speeds in excess of 60mph.

The fuel tank has an evap leak that somehow breaks on top the tank so it leaks the gas vapors and could potentially start a fire but the part that breaks is a non serviceable part so it can’t be fixed without purchasing a whole new gas tank that isn’t cheap. My other concern is the infamous grounding issue with the wires on the ground g105 I believe right next to oil filter that grounds the transmission and engine control modules well it shorts at times when driving and suddenly your car dies while driving how scary it could cause a wreak and kill somebody it’s a very scary issue that constantly comes back even after trying to re ground it needs to be recalled and fixed it’s going to kill somebody and it’s a well known issue for this make and model that should have already gotten attention to be resolved.

The car idles very low when stopped and sputters/putters like it's going to die. It has now actually died on me twice while driving, luckily when you put it in park and turn the car off and back on it starts right back up but you can see how this is a severe safety hazard. The first time it died I was stopped in the turning lane waiting on traffic to go by so I could turn left (this is the busiest street in town) I go to start turning left the car just shuts off mid turn crossing the other lane of the street, luckily I didn't get hit by oncoming traffic and was able to coast onto the side street that I was turning on and pull over and turn the car off and back on and drive it home. I took it to the mechanic and he can't figure out what's wrong with it so he gives it a tune up and now the check engine light won't turn off...fast forward to today it dies again at a stop sign with my [XXX] in the car. It is ESPECIALLY bad if you have the AC on it seems like it effects the electrical like the car is going to shut off when I am stopped and the ac is running, so I turned off the ac and it was still sputtering when I would stop but didn't die again. There is an entire thread of people with the same issue as me: [XXX] this car needs recalled it is a death trap. "TAKATA RECALL" ON 3/30/18 I WAS INVOLVED IN A WRECK. I WAS TRAVELING ON A BUSY CITY STREET WHEN THE LIGHT TURNED RED. I STOPPED AND THE PERSON IN FRONT OF ME WAS DRIVING A LARGE SUV. WHEN THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN AND TRAFFIC BEGAN TO MOVE I STARTED DRIVING. OUT OF NOWHERE WITH NO WARNING, THE DRIVER JUST STOPPED AND MY CAR RAN INTO THE BACK OF THE VEHICLE. WE BOTH STAYED IN OUR VEHICLES I CALLED 911. OFFICERS ARRIVED AND EMERGENCY SERVICES. EVEN THOUGH HARDLY ANY DAMAGE WAS DONE TO THE SUV, MY CAR SUSTAINED A LOT OF DAMAGE TO THE HOOD AND BUMPER OF MY CAR. THE AIRBAGS DIDN'T DEPLOY. I THOUGHT MY CAR WAS TOTALED BY LOOKING AT IT. I WAS ABLE TO HAVE MOST OF MY CAR REPAIRED OUT OF POCKET BECAUSE I HAD LIABILITY ONLY AT THE TIME. THE PASSENGER IN FRONT OF ME AFTER GIVING INFORMATION TO THE RESPONDERS WAS ABLE TO DRIVE AWAY, I WAS NOT. I'VE ALSO HAD ANOTHER ACCIDENT WHERE THE AIRBAGS DIDN'T DEPLOY IN 2014. I AM CONCERNED THAT I MIGHT BE IN ANOTHER ACCIDENT THAT COULD BE LIFE-THREATENING AND THE AIRBAGS WON'T WORK. I CONTACTED GM ABOUT MY CONCERNS REGARDING THE AIRBAGS AND NOTHING WAS DONE TO HAVE MY AIRBAGS CHECKED. I WAS ABLE TO HAVE THE SWITCH CHANGED WHEN THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THAT. I HOPE BY SHARING MY EXPERIENCE WITH YOU SOMETHING CAN BE DONE TO HAVE MY AIRBAGS CHECKED AND GIVE ME A SENSE OF SECURITY WHEN DRIVING MY VEHICLE.

My Power Steering is going out and then coming back in to use. Today is the second time it has happened. It went out just now, I reversed down the road to my house, and turn it off once I crank it again the steering is back. I haven’t gotten any pictures of it as I’m more worried about making it back to my house so I’m not in the road but will be more than happy to get a picture if this happens again. I’m also not sure which ADAS this connects to so I put cruise control.

THE ACTIVATING SWITCH FOR THE PASSENGER-SIDE AIR BAG FAILED AROUND 78,000 MILES. THIS SEAT SWITCH ACTIVATES THE PASSENGER AIRBAG SAFETY SYSTEM WHEN AN OCCUPANT SITS DOWN IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT. I WAS TOLD AT THE TIME WE HAD THE IGNITION SWITCH RECALL REPAIR DONE TO THE CAR THAT THE ONLY WAY TO REPLACE THE BROKEN SEAT SWITCH WAS TO REPLACE THE PASSENGER SEAT COVER. TO DO THIS REQUIRES AN INITIAL OUTLAY OF $150.00 DOLLARS FOR THE PART( THE SWITCH IS WOVEN INTO THE SEAT FABRIC)PLUS LABOR TO INSTALL(PRICE UNKNOWN)AT THE DEALERSHIP. WITHOUT REGARD TO AGE,WEIGHT OR GENDER ANY FRONT SEAT PASSENGER MAY BELIEVE THEY ARE PROTECTED UPON READING THE DASHBOARD 'AIRBAG' SIGN WHEN SITTING IN THE CAR. THE PANEL-MOUNTED INDICATOR FOR THAT AIRBAG IS A LIGHTED DISPLAY WHICH, IN DAYLIGHT, IS HARD TO SEE WITHOUT CUPPING YOUR HAND OVER THE ANNUNCIATOR-OR WAIT UNTIL NIGHTFALL , GET SOMEBODY TO SIT IN THE SEAT, AND THEN CHECK OUT THE DASH LIGHT.

I ALREADY HAD A RECALL ON THE FUEL PUMP OR MODULAR AND THEN ON THE IGNITION SWITCH. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAS ALWAYS BEEN ON. THEY COULDN'T GET IT TO GO OFF EVEN WHEN THEY DID THOSE REPAIRS, THEN ONE DAY THE TURN SIGNALS STOPPED TURNING OFF AFTER MAKING A TURN. THE NEWEST PROBLEM AND THE SCARIEST ONE TO ME IS NOW A GAS LEAK. I WENT OUT AND STARTED MY CAR, STARTED TO REVERSE AND THEN SMELLED A STRONG ODOR OF GAS. I STOPPED AND NOTICED MY GAS GAUGE ACTUALLY GOING DOWN. SO I SHUT THE CAR OFF HURRIED UP AND GOT MY KIDS OUT AND THEN SAW THE GAS POURING ON THE ROAD FROM UNDER MY CAR. I CAN'T BELIEVE THE PROBLEMS THAT I'VE HAD WITH THIS CAR. CHEVY NEEDS TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THESE PROBLEMS. IT'S THEIR CHEAP MISTAKES. THE ONLY REASON I HAVE CONTINUED TO KEEP THE CAR IS BECAUSE IT BELONGED TO MY LITTLE BROTHER WHO DIED IN A TRAGIC CAR CASH WITH HIS PREGNANT FIANC AND MY FATHER. SO I HAVEN'T WANTED TO PART WITH IT. I HAVE SEEN THAT OTHERS HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEMS AND APPARENTLY THERE WAS RECALLS FOR SOME OF THESE PROBLEMS ON OTHERS BUT NOT FOR MY VIN. HOW IS THAT RIGHT? THEY NEED TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR FIXING THIS AND THEY NEED TO FIX EVERYTHING CORRECTLY THIS TIME. I NEED HELP WITH THIS PROBLEM, I'M NOT SURE WHERE ELSE TO TURN AT THIS POINT.
