What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
Air bag code and light on dash code B0085-00 . Code is set when the key is in on position and the door is opened. Left front side impact sensor. I am a master technician and determined wiring problem between the driver door and cab . Performed search on line common problem. This is a safety issue and should be addressed. Thank you
As a safety recall, I did take the truck in for the airbag recall upon completion. I ran the codes and I have an airbag code. They’re saying that the dashboard was broken before they started. It was not. They broke it on installation of the new airbag.
Body & structure
Reports naming the vehicle structure, frame, body panels, doors, hood and trim.
From owner reports, verbatim
The rust damage to the frame is damaged beyond anything form just regular wear and tear and driver fault. To not be remedied is a real issue. The salt used in the roads and the material used by the car companies isn’t anything myself as a consumer could prepare for.
I just bought this truck in June of 2024. This was a bad dealer because he knowingly sold me the truck with severe frame damage and let me drive a dangerous truck off the lot. I cannot deem it as a total loss to have it replaced because it falls under “wear and tear”. I now have to pay for the truck for the next 5 years and don’t have the money to fix it because the quote states it will be around $13,000, which is how much he sold me the truck for. Because it is a 2010 the warranty has expired. I am completely frustrated and disappointed that there is no one to help me with this betrayal. I have read that many others who have bought GMC’s are and have had the same issues and GM refuses to recall the frames. Something needs to be done about this considering it is GM who did not apply any anti-rust or anti-corrosion to the frames on their vehicles.
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
For the last couple years, I have been talking to Chevrolet GM. My engine has been replaced at 9000 miles. This motor now does not even have 100,000 miles on it. The second engine left me stranded twice coming back from a long trip. The motor shook stalled and I could not get it. Restarted once I did get it restarted the engine made a loud banging noise my truck looks practically brand new. It just sits in the driveway and looks pretty. I’m afraid to drive it because it’s gonna leave me stranded again and I have been talking with Chevrolet and he seemed to keep pushing me away and I don’t know what else to do
The contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle jerked and failed to accelerate as intended while depressing the accelerator pedal. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that on a separate occasion, the ignition switch failed to turn over, and the catalytic converter failed and was replaced. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and was diagnosed with transmission failure. The vehicle was repaired. The catalytic converter was replaced; however, the ignition was not repaired. Most recently, the engine displayed several fault codes. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure; however, no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that on several occasions while driving at various speeds, the instrument cluster became inoperable, and the vehicle shuddered and stalled. The vehicle was able to restart after 20-seconds on all occasions. The traction control, stabili-trak, and the check engine warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, but the failure could not be duplicated. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 176,300.
I got a code p2138 Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch. Upon doing my own research on this code I found out it is a manufacture defect. And they are aware this is caused because the manufacturer did not seal the antenna correctly so water gets in and damages wires and sensors
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim

GM 3.0 diesel engine has a coolant control valve that fails putting the vehicle into a reduced power mode causing the vehicle to have significantly reduced acceleration and putting the engine fan at full to reduce engine heat. When stopped, the engine had been running very hot as you can hear the popping from the metal as it cools off. The part to repair this issue is 40009158 and is being replaced by 40009452. This part is on a nationwide backorder with hundreds on the waiting list just at this time for a repair and no clear picture of when parts will become available. Many other cases have been reported since 2021 for the same issue with the 3.0 GM Duramax engine with engine code/styles LM2 & LZO.
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim

Suspension
Reports naming suspension components — springs, struts, shocks, control arms and related hardware.
From owner reports, verbatim
Frame is rotting quickly and causing suspension issues
Frame under truck bed totally rusted, cracked and broken in numerous locations. Gas Tank is hanging by a rusty thread! This problem should have been a recall. My $20k truck is now worth scrap value!!
Visibility
Reports naming windshields, glass, wipers, defrosters and mirrors.
From owner reports, verbatim
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DEFROSTER FAILED TO OPERATE PROPERLY AND ONLY TWO VENTS CLEARED THE FOG FROM THE WINDSHIELD. WHEN THE FAILURE OCCURRED ON A COLD DAY, THE HEATER FAILED TO OPERATE AND IMPACTED THE VISIBILITY ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE FOG WAS EXTENSIVE AND CAUSED CONDENSATION. PAUL MASSE CHEVROLET SOUTH (399 MAIN ST, SOUTH KINGSTOWN, RI 02879, (401) 515-4904) WAS NOTIFIED. THE CONTACT PURCHASED A FAN TO PLACE ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE TO PREVENT THE CONDENSATION DUE TO THE VENT FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
THE INTERIOR DASH PANEL ON MY SILVERADO 1500, 4X4, CREW CAB HAS CRACKED BEHIND THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER CAUSING A LOUD RATTLE WHEN GOING OVER BUMPS. THE DASH PANEL HAS ALSO STARTED TO CRACK AT THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG LOCATION AND I FEEL THIS COULD BE A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION IF THE AIRBAG WERE TO DEPLOY, CAUSING PLASTIC DASH PARTS TO DISLODGE AND HIT OCCUPANTS.
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
THE STABLICHECK LIGHT COMES ON. IT GET CHECKED OUT ST DEALERSHIP.. NO PROBLEMS. THE LIFTERS FAILED IN 2016.. WHY. THE TRUCK HAS BEEN MAINTAINED VERY WELL. I HEAR THIS IS KNOWN GM PROBLEM. FRIENDS HAVE SAME ISSUES.THE TRUCK IS ALWAYS IN MOTION WHEN THE ISSUES ABOVE START TO OCCUR
THREE DIFFERENT TIMES THE TRUCK THROTLE STUCK TO THE FLOOR ONLY WAY TO CORRECT IT WAS TO TURN THE KEY OFF THEN THE GAS PETAL WOULD RELEASE. WOULD HAFT TO PULL OFF ROAD THEN RESTART THE TRUCK. THE TRUCK WAS ON HWY,EATHER PASSING OR PULLING ON THE INTERSTATE.
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
My trailer brake service light is on and my trailer brakes don’t work . That’s about all I can think of and haven’t been able to figure out the fix.
SERVICE TRAILER BRAKES SOON, WARNING COMES ACROSS DISPLAY & LOSS OF TRAILER BRAKES WITHOUT WARNING. I WAS DRIVING ON A BRIGHT SUNNY DAY, DRY ROADS, TRAFFIC AHEAD OF ME CAME TO A STOP. I WAS PULLING A 7,000 POUND TRAVEL TRAILER STEPPED ON BRAKE ALL WAS FINE 1 MINUTE, SERVICE TRAILER BRAKE SOON WARNING DISPLAY CAME ACROSS & NO TRAILER BRAKES & ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. AS LONG AS THE DISPLAY SAYS SERVICE TRAILER BRAKES SOON, YOU HAVE NO TRAILER BRAKES, THERE IS NO WARNING OR BACK UP SYSTEM JUST HOPE FOR THE BEST, JUST GLAD I WASN'T GOING DOWN A MOUNTAIN. THIS TIME I WENT TO HAVE OIL CHANGED & SERVICE TRAILER BRAKES SOON DISPLAYED & TRUCK RAN ROUGH. TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP, AFTER 3 DAYS AT DEALERSHIP, MECHANIC SAYS THE "FUEL PUMP FLOW CONTROL MODULE" HAS TO BE REPLACED, SAME AS IN RECALL # 14515B. THIS WARNING WILL ALSO DISPLAY WITHOUT TRAILER CONNECTION & VEHICLE POWER LOSS HAPPENS UNTIL RESTARTED. THIS IS DANGEROUS AS THERE'S NO WARNING OR CERTAIN SITUATION OR WEATHER CONDITION THAT MAKES THIS ANY DIFFERENT. THIS HAPPENS WHETHER YOUR CITY OR HIGHWAY DRIVING, DOESN'T MATTER.

Interior & seats
Reports naming seats, latches, locks, linkages and interior fittings.
From owner reports, verbatim
WHILE DRIVING OR STATIONARY, WHEN PRESSURE IS APPLIED TO THE DRIVERS SIDE SEAT BACK IT INSTANTLY GOES TO THE FULLY RECLINED POSITION! SOMETHING INTERNAL TO THE SEAT BACK ADJUSTER LETS LOOSE/MALFUNCTIONS. TWO TIMES NOW WHILE I'M DRIVING I LEAN BACK TO TAKE SOMETHING OUT OF MY POCKET AND THE SEAT GOES FULLY RECLINED. THE NATURAL INSTINCT IS TO PULL ON THE STEERING WHEEL TO KEEP FROM FALLING BACKWARDS, AND THIS CAUSES THE TRUCK TO SWERVE. VERY DANGEROUS!!!!!

VALVESTEMS SPLIT AT BASE ADJACENT TO WHEEL AFTER < 4 MONTHS AND < 5000MILES. THESE WERE PURCHASED FROM GENERAL MOTORS (DEALERSHIP) AND INSTALLED BY A REPUTABLE TIRE STORE. THEY WOULD RELEASE AIR AT A RATE OF APPROXIMATELY 10-15PSI PER 100MI DRIVEN AND ONLY AT FREEWAY SPEEDS. NO AIR LOSS AROUND TOWN OR OVER NIGHT WHILE SITTING. BENDING THE VALVE STEM DOWNWARD (AWAY FROM THE HUB AND TOWARDS THE TIRE) CAUSED THE AIR TO ESCAPE. THIS IS THE DIRECTION THEY WOULD NATURAL BEND WHILE SPINNING DUE TO CENTRIFUGAL FORCE. ALL 4 WERE LEAKING OR SHOWED SIGNS OF DAMAGE IN THE SAME LOCATION.

Tires & wheels
Reports naming tires, wheels, hubs, or the tire-pressure monitoring system.
From owner reports, verbatim
My truck tires were bought at Costco in 2015 and had 70k Warranty or 6yrs WCF. My added truck mileage since then is 12k miles. I discovered my driver rear passenger tire go flat . I put the spare and took it to Costco for repair. Costco informed me that this is a tire defect as the tire had a side wall perforation. Tire cannot be repaired and a new replacement is required. I looked up Michelin tire recalls and found one issued in 2013 about Michelin X-Radial tires discussing this same defect but it did not include my tire size ( P245/70R17 ) . Fortunately this incident did not occur while driving at high speed.
AS I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD MY TIRE STARTED GOING FLAT. AFTER CHANGING THE TIRE AND PUTTING THE SPARE ON I NOTICED THAT WHERE THE TIRE WENT FLAT THERE HAD BEEN SEPARATION FROM THE OUTSIDE TIRE AND THE INSIDE OF THE TIRE RUBBER. I NOTICED THAT BOTH MY WRANGLER GOODYEAR P265/70/R17 TIRES HAD BUBBLES IN THEM WHERE THE TIRES ARE SEPARATING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE TREAD. THE TIRES DOT NUMBER IS 4BT6 FDER 0610. THIS IS DEFINITELY A MANUFACTURING DEFECT AND SHOULD BE LOOKED INTO. THE TIRES ARE ON A 2010 CHEVROLET 1500 PICKUP. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE POWER STEERING WAS FAULTY AND THE STEERING WHEEL SEIZED. THE CONTACT HAD TO LET THE VEHICLE ROLL DOWN THE DRIVEWAY IN ORDER FOR THE STEERING WHEEL TO UNLOCK. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT A NEW RACK AND PINION NEEDED TO BE INSTALLED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED THREE TIMES WITHIN THREE MONTHS. THE VEHICLE WAS SCHEDULED FOR REPAIR AND THE MECHANIC ORDERED THE PART FROM NAPA. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND DID NOT ASSIST. THE DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 104,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.

RIGHT FRONT LIGHT KEEPS GOING OUT NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES I REPLACE IT
FAILURE OF CRUISE CONTROL AND TRAILER BRAKING SYSTEM WHILE BRAKING. ISSUE WAS A BREAK IN THE WIRING HARNESS UNDER THE DASH CAUSING A SHORT. BROKEN WIRE STILL HAD INSULATOR IN TACT AS IF NEW. THIS SEEMS TO BE AN ISSUE DUE TO TYPE OR UNDERSIZED WIRE AS THIS IS THE SECOND HARNESS FAILURE ON THE TRUCK

SAFETY ISSUE WITH 2010 GMC/CHEVROLET 1500 PICKUPS WITH 6 SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. THE ISSUE INVOLVES DRIVING ONE OF THESE VEHICLES WITH THE TOW/HAUL MODE TURNED ON. IF GOING DOWN A HILL AT 55 TO 65 MILES PER HOUR, ACTUALLY ANY SPEED, BY LAYING YOUR FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL HARD JUST HARD ENOUGH TO TURN ON BRAKE LIGHTS THESE VEHICLES WILL BEGIN DOWNSHIFTING. THE ONE I OWN WILL GO FROM 5TH GEAR TO 2ND GEAR IN LESS THAN 10 SECONDS. AT THIS POINT THE TACHOMETER WILL PEG TO THE MAX AND THE REAR TIRES WILL BEGIN TO SLIDE. I HAVE HAD THIS AT THE DEALER TWICE AND HAVE BEEN TOLD THIS IS NORMAL AND THEY RECOMMEND I DON'T USE THE TOW/HAUL MODE. MY VEHICLE HIT A SMALL BUMP IN THE ROAD ONCE WHILE THIS WAS HAPPENING AND ACTUALLY WAS COMPLETELY SIDEWAYS AT 50 MPH. *TR
