2015 Chevrolet Suburban Steering Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the steering system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Steering reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

While driving at highway speeds my vehicle lost steering the radio and the hvac turned off. I had abs and brake lights on the dash as well as a service stabilitrac message. The vehicle completely shutoff and I almost had an auto accident. I have not taken it anywhere as I’m to afraid to drive it for fear of having an accident.

On at or about November 1, 2025, I experienced a sudden loss of power steering. I was backing up in a parking and experienced a complete power steering failure. Since that date, it has failed multiple times. There was a recall on the EPS Module in 2015. I have contacted a dealer, they could not find a recall for any power steering issues, when there clearly has been. If there has been a recall for the steering of the same model and make and year, and is clearly a SAFETY ISSUE, this recall in 2015 should cover my vehicle also. I was under the assumption that my vehicle was low on power steering fluid. Proceed to look for power steering pump to check fluid level, no reservoir! Start to investigate, find out I have an Electric Power Assist Motor, and an electric module that can not be replaced when it fails, the entire assembly has to be replaced, no way to replace fluid! I’m in the process of getting an estimate of repair as of 11/25/ 2025. There was no indication of any kind, of possibly failure! There is no data stored in the computer indicating any failure, electrical or otherwise!

The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the steering wheel became stiff, and the vehicle lost automotive power. The check engine, seat belt, stabili-trak, and ABS warning lights were illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle was occasionally towed and taken to the same local dealer on several occasions, where it was diagnosed; however, the failure was not yet determined. The transmission, fuel pump, battery, alternator, and unknown wiring were replaced at the consumer's expense; however, the failure persisted. In addition, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V586000 (Steering); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 117,000.

While driving approximately 70 miles an hour and trying to switch lanes, we got a stabilitrack warning and the car shut off for a second and then came back on. the weather was nice and there was no snow or any other adverse conditions. This happened a couple more times on the ride and then when we tried to turn into a parking spot it shut off completely and we had to restart it. We turned stabilitrack off and the car was ok for a couple of short drives. Then driving late at late and we passed another car the same thing happened. Then when we tried to turn our brights on we got the same message. Then we got a brake assist message and then we got a collision alert. The headlights were flickering the rest of the drive and we couldnt use our brights. We had our 4 children in the car and it was shutting down at high speeds and very scary. I looked up our vin and it said that the recalls had been worked on but I dont remember this being done. This has never happended before this. our car would be available for inspection if needed.

The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated while driving approximately 35 MPH and attempting to make a left or right turn, the vehicle lost motive power. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent but has been recurred more frequently at slow speeds. The vehicle was not able to be restarted. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer however, no failure was found. The contact stated that the failure reoccurred, and the local dealer was not able to duplicate the failure. The local dealer suggested that the battery needed to be replaced. The battery was replaced; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and remained with the independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure with the NHTSA Manufacturer Communication Number: N212333901 (Loss of Power Steering Assist). The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000.

Vehicle lost power steering turning a tight left into a parking space at a low speed on 5/18/2024. A second later, the engine and all electrical in the vehicle went dead. The steering locked and nothing electrical in the vehicle was functional. Based on the online information and comments found, this is a significant problem with the 2015 Suburban. The GMC recall number is 14743. The recall was for replacement of the power steering assist motor kit. When I look up my vehicle on the recall listing there are no recalls for my vehicle. There is an obvious problem which is effecting these vehicles and dealers shouldn't question the safety implications of steering and engine failure while the vehicle is moving.

It started with a glitch with the radio/navigation system flashing back and forth and not working. The cooling fan on the vehicle would run for about 10 minutes. The blind spot warning would blink on and off and there was no one else on the road. Then two days later the check engine light came on for about 5 days. Then three days later there was a loss of battery power and the indication light came on stating the car was in battery save mode. Then two days later the power steering system was lost on the highway and all the warning lights on the dash were flashing. The car stalled and refused to start. The tow truck driver tried to jump the vehicle with a battery pack that would jump a diesel and he only got enough power to put the car in neutral.

Vehicle loses power steering when turning at slow speeds which was part of a recall from 2018. Reflashing the module didn't fix the issue and has been doing it again for a year now except that now it occasionally loses power as well and has twice lost power while I was turning and oncoming traffic coming at me. GM is saying it is not the same issue as the prior recall, but I disagree and that the work done prior didn't fix the safety hazard. An 8 year old vehicle shouldn't be losing power while driving to where the battery cables have to all be replaced. That should have been the work GM did back when they first put out the recall for the loss of power steering.

The power steering locks up at random times while I am driving my vehicle. It seems to be temporary loss of power steering because it eventually starts working again. It feels almost impossible to turn the car when this happens. I searched online and found there had been a recall on the EPS (Electric Power Steering) for this exact issue. I called the local dealership, they told me after searching my vin that the recall had already taken place in 2019. The repair or recall that was done did not fix the problem.

Over 600 miles from home. Started vehicle and " Service power steering- drive with care" message shows. No power steering. Recall performed previously. Attempted to drive. Within 15 miles power steering came back while traveling 55 mph. The next morning in the rain a repeat. This is a very heavy vehicle with 6 passengers. Hard enough to maneuver with power steering on bag roads. GM knows there is a problem but like most big companies, they pay off people to avoid fixing issues. Search online and see.

AFTER RECENTLY PURCHASING A USED 2015 GM VEHICLE FROM A NON-GM DEALERSHIP, I MADE A SERVICE APPOINTMENT WITH A LOCAL AUTHORIZED GM SERVICE SHOP TO HAVE THREE OUTSTANDING SAFETY RECALL ISSUES ADDRESSED. MY APPOINTMENT WAS FOR 7:30 AM ON 8/25/2020 AND I BROUGHT MY VEHICLE TO THE SHOP IN THE MORNING OF 8/25. AFTER 4:30 PM I RETURNED TO RETRIEVE MY VEHICLE, AND THE SERVICE SHOP HAD NOT EVEN BROUGHT IT IN TO LOL AT THE ISSUES. NO WORK HAD BEEN PERFORMED, DESPITE THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT HAVING MY VEHICLE IN THEIR POSSESSION NOT ONLY DURING THE TIMEFRAME SPECIFICALLY SCHEDULED FOR THEM TO PERFORM THIS SERVICE, BUT THE ENTIRE REMAINDER OF THE WORK DAY. THE SAFETY RECALL ISSUES REMAIN UNRESOLVED.

THIS HAPPENED ON 2 OCCASIONS. FIRST INCIDENT WAS ON 2/14/2020, POWER STEERING WENT OUT AND WAS UNABLE TO TURN STEERING WHEEL. HAD TAKEN TO CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP LOCALLY AND THEY PUT ON COMPUTER AND SHOWED LOW VOLTAGE. THEY ASSURED ME IT WAS THE BATTER AND THAT I NEED AN AC DELCO BATTERY AND THAT WOULD RESOLVE THE ISSUE. EVEN HAD THEM HOOK IT BACK TO COMPUTER TO MAKE SURE NOTHING WAS POPPING UP WRONG AND TO ASSURE IT WAS JUST BATTERY. THEY DID AND NOTHING SHOWED WRONG AFTER CHANGING BATTER. I WENT OUT OF TOWN OVER THE WEEKEND TRUSTING THEIR JUDGMENT, WITH MY CHILDREN. THEN ON 2/20/2020 IT HAPPENED AGAIN! IT WAS TAKEN AGAIN AND HAD 9 THINGS SHOWING WRONG ON THE COMPUTER. THEY NOW ARE SAYING IT IS THE POWER STEERING GEAR.I BELIEVE THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE RECALLED BEFORE SOMEONE IS HURT. I TRUSTED THAT IT WAS JUST THE BATTERY. I COULD HAVE HURT SOMEONE, MY CHILDREN, IF IT HAD HAPPENED AND I COULD NOT TURN THE WHEEL TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT. I WAS TOLD THAT THE PART IS ON BACKORDER. I THINK THAT SAYS ENOUGH IF THEY HAVE IT ON BACKORDER, THERE IS A PROBLEM. THANKFULLY BOTH TIMES I WAS ABLE TO GET IT TAKEN TO THE CHEVROLET PLACE SAFELY WITHOUT INJURY. BOTH TIMES IT WAS STOPPED, ONCE AT A RED LIGHT AND SECOND PARKED AND HAD GOTTEN OUT FOR MAYBE 3 MINUTES AND IT POPPED UP ON THE SCREEN WHEN I GOT BACK IN VEHICLE.

NHTSA TRACKING # 11308677 - ADDITIONAL AND UPDATED INFO. THE PROBLEM WITH OUR VEHICLE IS THAT THE POWER ASSIST MOTOR IS MALFUNCTIONING CAUSING INTERMITTENT POWER SUPPLY TO THE POWER ASSIST MOTOR, CAUSING THE CAR TO BECOME UNABLE TO STEER OR LURCH UNEXPECTEDLY TO THE LEFT WHILE UNDERWAY. THIS IS LIFE THREATENING. THE NHTSA APPROVED A RECALL ON THE 2015 SUBURBAN FOR SPECIFIC DATES OF BUILD, FOR WHICH OURS IS NOT INCLUDED ACCORDING TO GM. NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID 14V19000 IS IN RELATION TO THIS ISSUE. APPARENTLY. OUR VEHICLE HAS THE SAME ISSUE THE RECALL SHOULD BE EXTENDED TO COVER MODELS MADE WHEN OURS WAS MADE. AGAIN, THIS IS A LIFE THREATENING FAILURE THAT IS JUST WAITING TO HAPPEN UNLESS GM CORRECTS THE ISSUE.

THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE. LOSS OF STEERING ASSIST OCCURRED THIS PAST WEEK, 3 TIMES. WE TOOK THE VEHICLE IN FOR THE RECALL ON THIS ITEM 5-16-19, WHEN THE SYSTEM WAS "REPROGRAMMED" BY THE TECHS AT THE CHEVY DEALERSHIP. WE HAD NEVER EXPERIENCED THIS ISSUE. THEN LAST WEEK, THE ISSUE OCCURRED. THERE WAS A TEMPORARY LOSS OF POWER ASSIST ON A LONG RIGHT HAND TURN AT 35 MPH WHEN A FEMALE WAS DRIVING WHICH CAUSED SOME CONCERN. THEN YESTERDAY THE STEERING STOPPED ENTIRELY IN A PARKING LOT. I ARRIVED AND GOT IN THE CAR AND WAS ABLE TO STEER BUT SOMEONE OF LESSER STRENGTH COULD NOT HAVE. I DROVE AROUND THE PARKING LOT AND WAS HEADED STRAIGHT TO THE DEALERSHIP, ABUT 5 MILES AWAY. THE STEERING CAME BACK ON. THEN HALFWAY TO THE DEALERSHIP, WHAT HAD HAPPENED TO MY WIFE HAPPENED TO ME AT ABOUT 40 MPH (STEERING GOES OUT FOR A SECOND) AND THE VEHICLE LURCHES HARD TO THE RIGHT. SHE WAS BEHIND ME IN MY VEHICLE AND SAW IT HAPPEN. WE WERE ABLE TO GET TO THE DEALERSHIP. THEY DOCUMENTED THE LACK OF POWER STEERING ASSIST INCIDENTS VIA THE COMPUTER. MY POINT IS THAT IF THIS WAS CORRECTED IN MAY 2019, WHY IS IT HAPPENING AGAIN? IF YOU ARE NOT EXPECTING THE ISSUE, YOU WILL BE CAUGHT OFF GUARD AND A WRECK IS POTENTIALLY UNAVOIDABLE. WHAT IF I HAD A TRAILER IN TOW AT 60+ MHP? DEATH COULD BE THE RESULT, FOR THE DRIVER OR OTHERS. IF THE ISSUE HAS NOT BEEN CORRECTED, GM SHOULD PULL THESE VEHICLES OFF THE ROAD AND REPLACE THEM, FREE OF CHARGE.

THIS HAS HAPPENED IN ALL DRIVING CONDITIONS, STOPPED, CITY ,COUNTRY , HIGHWAY ROADS. THIS HAS HAPPENED ABOUT FOUR TIMES, AND WE HAVE IT AT A DEALER NOW FOR THE THIRD TIME. THE FIRST DEALER COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. SECOND DEALER SAID THE PROBLEM WAS A STEERING LOCK CONTROL MODULE AND REPLACED IT, THE THIRD DEALER IS STILL WORKING ON IT. THE LOSS OF POWER STEERING ,MAKING THE CAR VERY HARD TO STEER IS WHAT HAS PROMPTED ME TO MAKE THIS REPORT. THIS HAPPENED FOR THE FIRST TIME ,AUGUST 13, 2019 AND THE LAST TIME ,JANUARY 29, 2020
