2015 Chevrolet Trax Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2015 Chevrolet Trax, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Ranked by how many owner reports name each component category

Percentages are of component mentions. A single complaint can name more than one component, so these do not sum to the total complaint count.

While driving in the highway vehicle lost power and gray smoke came out off the exhaust, it was hard to accelerate and TCS warning light and check engine light popped up. TCS warning light extinguished but check engine light still on. Cars behind me could have hit me from behind, because it was a sudden loss of speed, it made other drivers switch lanes creating the risk of crashing others or myself. I have taken the car to a mechanics and some say it’s the turbo and others say they don’t know what it can be and can’t really help me.

I have had multiple engine problems with my trax. For starters, shortly after I bought it in 2021 I had to have the radiator replaced, then in Aug or Sept 2022 I had to have the coil pack replaced, the in Oct 2022 the turbo needed to be replaced. Exactly 1 year after replacing the turbo, I had to replace it again in Oct 2023. Now I'm being told that these cars are having problems with Piston rings going out. After repleacing the turbo once again, my car was still acting up. I took it back to the mechanic and they told me my piston rings are shot. Due to this issue, I now need a new motor. I've been told by 3 different Automotive shops that they have replaced several engine in the past 5 months due to the Piston rings and turbo going out in them. My car is a sitting duck. I'm highly mad. To add full to the fire, some of my features are not working due to an electrical issue.

I am unable to control my vehicle. Something in front end of vehicle pushes and pulls the vehicle from left to right without being able to regain control. Loud popping and clunking while turning..Braking has also been a majoir issue along with suspension/steering issues. I would greatly appreciate these things to be fixed immediately beings there has been a recall years ago and I was never notified!

THE AIRBAG SENSOR FOR THE PASSENGER SEAT IS NOT WORKING PROPERLY. WHEN PASSENGER IS SEATED THE LIGHT "PASSENGER AIRBAG OFF" IS SHOWN AS IF NO ONE IS SEATED. AIRBAG ISN'T TURNED TO THE ON POSITION. THIS HAPPENS AS SOON AS THE PASSENGER SEATS DOWN, WHILE THE CAR IS STATIONARY OR MOVING. THE SENSOR IS DEFECTIVE. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING LIKE THIS FOR FEW YEARS NOW. WHEN BROUGHT UP THE ISSUE I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY AN EMPLOYE AT THE DEALERSHIP IT WAS BECAUSE THE PASSENGER MIGHT NOT BE SEATED PROPERLY. I FINALLY INSISTED ON HAVING IT CHECK AND TURNED OUT THAT THE DEALER FOUND THE SENSOR FOR THE AIRBAG PASSENGER SEAT WAS IN FACT DEFECTIVE/FAILING. THE DEALER CHARGED ME THE COST OF THE REPAIR (AS I NOW OWN THE CAR) EVEN THOUGH AT THE TIME WHEN THE PROBLEM STARTED THE CAR WAS STILL UNDER THE WARRANTY. THIS PROBLEM DID OCCUR 1 YEAR AFTER I STARTED LEASING THE CAR AND I KNOW NOW THAT MY PASSENGER WAS AT RISK THE WHOLE TIME, DURING AND AFTER THEIR WARRANTY EXPIRED. I HAVE LOOKED INTO SOME FORUM AND REALIZED OTHER PEOPLE HAD THE SAME ISSUES AND WERE TOLD THE SAME THING AT FIRST (THAT THE PASSENGER WASN'T SEATING RIGHT OR LIGHT WEIGHT ETC..) WHEN IN FACT THEIR SENSOR WAS/IS DEFECTIVE.

I have recently heard what could best be described as a squealing sound. I could also smell fuel inside the vehicle while driving. I thought it was oil that had leaked onto the serpentine belt and had it replaced but the noise continued. Listening closer I realized it was coming from the area around the intake manifold. Searching online I found several YouTube videos and comments from people mentioning loose spark plugs caused their issue. Checking mine I found that two of the four spark plugs were loose enough to not require a wrench to remove them. Tightening them eliminated the noise. I have owned this vehicle since it was brand new and have never asked a mechanic to check or replace spark plugs, nor have I done it myself. I did recently replace the intake manifold, which required removing and reinstalling the ignition coil. I feel like loose spark plugs represent a fire hazard as it allow the fuel to blow past the cylinders and into the engine compartment.

Safety Issue of the Passenger Rear Door's Lock will not lock/unlock (button will not go up and down) to be able to get in or out of car from the back seat - the 'motor'? can be heard engaging when either the door lock/unlock button is pressed or the key fob is pressed to lock/unlock - but the button is stuck in a position that you cannot pull it up to get in or out of the car. I HAVE BEEN SENT A PRETTY EGREGIOUS RECALL BY GM. I MADE AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE DEALER I PURCHASED THE CAR FROM. DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THEY HAD TO ORDER THE PART. IT'S BEEN A MONTH. WHEN I WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP, THEY SAID THE PART WAS NOT IN. MEANWHILE, MY FRIEND HAD HER RECALL FIXED THERE. THIS IS REGARDING A JOINT IN ONE OR BOTH FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARMS THAT CAN SEPARATE YOUR TIRES FROM THE VEHICLE. PRETTY SCARY, BUT I AM GETTING NOWHERE WITH THE CHEVROLET PEOPLE. I CALL EVERY DAY. HOW CAN YOU HELP ME ?
