2005 Dodge Durango Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2005 Dodge Durango, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

I have had my durango for about 2 years, one day I went to start it and it clicked as if battery had died. When I jumped it, it started right up. I noticed that my dash had a tire sensor light and a light saying Overhead lamp on. I turned my overhead switch and all my lights in the car turned on and then off when i turned switch.( normal) so I knew something was up. After doing some research I read about the recall. I Made an appointment on the 15th of June to get a recall for my instrument panel fixed. I dropped my car off at 7 am my appointment was at 8am. I called around 11:30 to get an ETA since I was on a time limit for work and live an hour away. The dealership called to tell me that he needed to take out cluster and test it and if it was cluster he would have to order it and it could be a few days. If it was fine it was a circuit Issue and he would need to fix it. Thank god my mother was in the same area visiting and was able to give me a ride home. He then called that evening and asked if I owned another Key/FOB. I told them I didn't and my fob has never worked since i purchased the vehicle. He stated that he got the recall all finished and fixed but now all the lights on my dash were flashing, my headlights the horn, flashers and something" went wonky" there. He then tried to tell me they needed to order a new fob to program it to my car and it was going to cost me almost $400. I told them I was not going to pay that amount and that it seems like they messed something up when they put it together. I picked up my car Friday the 17th and my tire pressure light was still on. After getting home and checking tires they were all fine. The next day I went to start my car and the Headlight lamp light came back onto my dash. I already had to take 2 days off work and now have to miss more to have this recall done right. I looked up my vin today the 20th and it says my recall is incomplete! To top it off they never gave me any paperwork or have me sign anything.

This vehicle will slip in and out 4 wheel drive on its own. This can occur when driving and I’m concerned it will create a dangerous situation, especially if driving at high speeds. When this issue is occurring, making tight turns (parking, neighborhood driving) becomes very dangerous as the wheels become locked and you have to press the accelerator down creating a lot of power and the vehicle becomes dangerously uncontrollable. This is very common while parking, when often pedestrians are present and the vehicle becomes unpredictable due to this issue. This will also occur at a 2 way stop when turning right in front of on-coming traffic. The vehicle will again be unpredictable and can’t turn smoothly impairing traffic coming from behind.

2005 DODGE DURANGO LIMITED, 5.7L HEMI V8 STALLS WHILE BACKING UP. FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED THE TRUCK STARTED RIGHT BACK UP IMMEDIATELY. THE SECOND TIME ON 11/28/11, IT TOOK 3 TIMES TO RESTART THE VEHICLE. THIS HAS ONLY HAPPENED WHILE IN REVERSE. APPARENTLY THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE HEMIS AND THERE IS A TSB #0802404 TO "REFLASH" THE ENGINE AND UPDATE THE SOFTWARE. THE FORUMS STATE THAT THIS IS A FIX FOR SOME VEHICLES, BUT NOT ALL. I AM SCARED TO BE IN THIS CAR WITH MY KIDS NOW-WHAT IF WE STALL ON THE HIGHWAY AND GET INTO A WRECK? PLEASE FIX THIS ISSUE! OUR SAFETY IS MY NUMBER ONE CONCERN, AND SHOULD BE YOURS AS WELL, DODGE! *KB

I PURCHASED MY 2005 DODGE DURANGO, 5.7L HEMI, USED FROM A DEALERSHIP. A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND I TOOK IT IN FOR SERVICE AND THEY FLUSHED MY TRANSMISSION FLUID AND SAID THAT IF IT DID IT AGAIN THEY WOULD TRY REPLACING THE SOLENOID IN THE TRANSMISSION. AFTER THAT, THE ENGINE WOULD JUST SHUT OFF WHILE DRIVING - MOSTLY WHEN I WAS JUST STARTING OUT, BUT ONE TIME IT JUST DIED (NO WARNINGS) WHEN I WAS DOING 70 MPH DOWN THE HIGHWAY! NOW MY CAR IS STARTING TO BUCK (FEELS LIKE YOU HIT SOMETHING) AT @ 45 MPH - NOT WHEN ACCELERATING, STEPPING ON THE GAS OR DECELERATING, BUT RATHER WHEN STAYING AT A STEADY RATE OF SPEED. I HAVE YOUNG CHILDREN, MY HUSBAND WORKS OUT OF STATE, AND I FEAR FOR OUR LIVES EVERY TIME WE DRIVE THIS VEHICLE! IT IS MY ONLY FORM OF TRANSPORTATION AND I HAVE A LOAN ON IT! I HAVE READ HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THESE SAME TYPE OF SYMPTOMS. I WANT TO KNOW WHY DODGE HAS NOT DONE ANYTHING ABOUT IT! THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT BAILED THEM OUT BEFORE, NOW IT'S TIME THEY TAKE RESPONSIBILITY AND RECALL THESE CARS AND GET THEM FIXED BEFORE PEOPLE START DIEING! THEY ARE BLATANTLY IGNORING A KNOWN PROBLEM! *TR

ALSO, THE FOUR WHEEL DRIVE LOW INDICATOR ILLUMINATED AND THE VEHICLE INADVERTENTLY SHIFTED INTO FOUR WHEEL LOW DRIVE. THE CONTACT SLOWLY DROVE TO A PARKING LOT WHERE THE ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF. AFTER A FEW MINUTES, THE VEHICLE WAS RESTARTED AND THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO DRIVE HOME. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED, BUT NOT REPAIRED. THE DIAGNOSTIC RESULTS WERE NOT PROVIDED. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOT CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 194,000.

NHTSA ID 11083658 · filed Apr 6, 2018

THIS VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A NON INJURY ACCIDENT WITH PROPERTY DAMAGE. THE INITIAL CAUSE OF THE CRASH WAS DETERMINED TO BE POOR ROAD CONDITIONS. THE DRIVER WAS DRIVING ON A GRAVEL ROAD AFTER A RAIN AND HEAVY TRAFFIC. DRIVER ENTERED A SOUPY SPOT IN THE ROAD AND THE VEHICLE STARTED TO TURN SIDEWAYS. DRIVER APPLIED THE BRAKES AND VEHICLE WOULD NOT SLOW DOWN FROM THE INITIAL VEHICLE SPEED OF AROUND 25 MPH. VEHICLE THEN LEFT THE ROADWAY, DOWN A STEEP DITCH AND THROUGH A FENCE CAUSING SEVERE DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE AND THE FENCE. DRIVER WAS ABLE TO KEEP THE VEHICLE UPRIGHT. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS REMOVED FROM THE AREA, IT WAS STILL DRIVEABLE, BUT THERE WAS VERY LITTLE VEHICLE BRAKING. UPON INSPECTION OF THE VEHICLE DAMAGE FOR THE ACCIDENT REPORT, INSPECTOR FOUND BRAKE FLUID LEAKING UNDER THE VEHICLE BELOW THE MASTER CYLINDER AREA OF THE VEHICLE. UPON OPENING THE HOOD, INSPECTOR NOTED BRAKE FLUID SPRAYED ALL OVER THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. FOUND THE REAR PRIMARY BRAKE LINE AND THE FRONT PRIMARY BRAKE LINE WERE ROUTED IN SUCH A MANNER THAT THE TWO STAINLESS STEEL JACKETED LINES WERE RUBBING ON EACH OTHER AND THE REAR LINE HAD RUPTURED, THUS LOSING BRAKING ABILITY. THIS IS THE LINE THAT GOES FROM THE MASTER CYLINDER TO THE HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT OF THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM. OWNER OF THE VEHICLE HAS OWNED IT SINCE 2006 AND NO BRAKE WORK OR MODIFICATIONS TO THE BRAKING SYSTEM HAVE BEEN PERFORMED WHILE CURRENT OWNER HAS POSSESSED VEHICLE. THIS APPEARS TO BE AN INSTALLATION ERROR FROM INITIAL PRODUCTION OF THE VEHICLE.

The carseat will not lock into the base proper in any recline position except 1. 1 is supposed to be for a newborn. When you place the seat (till you hear it "lock" into place per the manual and a CPST) in 2, 3, or 4 then the seat drops down into the 1 position while driving down the road. We've contacted evenflo repeatedly and no help from them. Now it's to the point it doesn't even lock into 1. We've had this seat since Jan 17, 2023. I have checked online and am able to find 30+ reviews of parents with the same issue across reddit, Amazon, and Walmart. A recall on the seat needs issued immediately. This has been going on since Jan 21st, 2023.

THE GASOLINE WILL OVERFLOW FROM THE FUEL FILLER PIPE AND CAP AND NOT SHUT OFF ON ITS OWN. THIS HAPPENS WHEN FILLING THE VEHICLE STATIONARY, WITH THE CAR OFF AT GAS STATIONS. IT HAPPENS VERY CONSISTENTLY, REGARDLESS OF THE FILL RATE OF THE GAS, THE STYLE OF GASOLINE DISPENSER, OR LOCATION OF THE GAS STATION. THE GASOLINE WILL CONTINUE TO SPILL OUT FROM THE FUEL NECK UNTIL SOMEONE MANUALLY INTERVENES AND TURNS OFF THE NOZZLE. THERE HAVE BEEN 2 RECALLS ISSUED FOR THIS ISSUE WITH 2005 DODGE DURANGO'S (RECALL ID# 40367, AND 27198) HOWEVER THE RECALL IS LIMITED TO CERTAIN VINS, WHICH DOES NOT INCLUDE MINE. TO BE CLEAR, EVEN THOUGH MY VIN IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALLS, I AM EXPERIENCING THE EXACT SAME ISSUE AS DESCRIBED IN BOTH RECALLS. THE BODY ON THAT SIDE OF THE VEHICLE (DIRECTLY UNDER THE FILLER CAP) HAS BEEN COMPLETELY EATEN AWAY FROM THE EPISODES OF GASOLINE POURING OUT OVER IT.
