2014 Dodge Durango Brakes Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the brake system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Brakes reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Crash reported

I was coming out of a drive thru car wash and driving towards an intersection with Rail road tracks on the road getting ready to turn left going 15 to 20 mph. As I turned my vehicle began skidding causing me to loose control and hitting 2 vehicles head on . I believe if my traction control (stability control) system or abs were functioning correctly this could have been avoided.

My 2014 Dodge Durango’s VIN is not listed as impacted by Safety Recall P14/NHTSA 14V-154. However, my vehicle is showing symptoms that match the problem described for that recall. I am requesting an investigation to determine if more VINs than originally impacted are affected by the problem described under the recall. System message code C0021-02 brake booster general failure has been displaying on my vehicle when the outside temperature is below freezing because water has seeped into the booster and is freezing which is compromising boost enough to cause the sensor to set the warning message. Given the risk of brake failure I have no choice but to arrange for the repair immediately. I will keep the replaced brake booster in case the investigation resulted in opening up the recall to more VINs. Please advise of any other measures I should take.

The rear light bar in my vehicle has repeatedly failed in my nine years of ownership. It first occurred in 2015 under the 36,000-mile warranty, followed by three more failures every two years, with the latest at 84,000 miles in 2024. This issue is tied to a design flaw. The light bar is prone to water ingress, causing light source failure and attributed to a manufacturing defect by the dealership. The cost of replacement is $2,100, and Arapahoe Dodge in Centennial, CO, acknowledges it as a widespread problem in Dodge vehicles with this part. Despite replacements, the issue persists, calling for a recall to redesign and replace the faulty units. Functioning as a crucial safety component in the braking system, the failure of the brake light significantly increases the risk of rear-end collisions. I initiated a ticket with Chrysler, but the representative lacked knowledge. Suggestions of a factory technician assisting at the dealership were met with uncertainty. There are no warning signs before the LED fails, with water accumulation being the only indicator. In summary, the recurring failure of the light bar poses a significant safety risk, acknowledged by the dealership. The cost of replacement is substantial, warranting a recall for redesign. Communication gaps with Chrysler and the lack of warning signs compound the issue, emphasizing the urgency for resolution.

While driving all sensors began flashing simultaneously. I took to mechanic and a few codes turned up. One for speed messages. One for can bus and the other was U0001. Took to dealership service and they had it for a week. After charging battery all sensors were cleared. Same day driving home all sensors came back on simultaneously. Car began making noises and driving in limp mode windshield wipers turned on by themselves. Took car to Firestone to check battery. They replaced battery. Sensors were still flashing all the way home but no other problems. Next day i lost power steering and ability to brake. Nearly crashing the Durango. I eventually was able to pull wheel and get to side of road. I tried to turn off engine,, but it would not turn off nor would the shifter allow me to shift to park. I sat in idle for a few moments and turned car off. I was near my home so drove home.. very difficult to steer. Then car sensors said to push clutch in . I have an automatic. It went crazy.

Service airbag system, service antilock brakes, service transmission, service shifter suddenly appear. Ater pulling over and turning it off the car went dead. Just spent $1500 for a new computer and two days later I have service airbag system. I have videos of the chaos. If this car is in an accident the airbags will not go off and passengers will be unprotected. The electrical issues in this car are beyond comprehension. Chrysler needs to take responsibility before it causes a catastrophic injury. The behavior of this vehicle is unacceptable and unsafe.

THE BRAKE WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AND STATED LOW FLUID. I TOPPED OFF THE FLUID. I CHECKED ALL WHEELS FOR LEAKS AND FOUND NONE. SEVERAL WEEKS LATER, THE SAME WARNING APPEARED AND BREAK FLUID WAS LOW AGAIN. I SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT WITH APPLE DODGE IN HANOVER, PA. THEY FOUND THAT THE BRAKE LINE HAD BEEN RUBBING ON THE STEERING COLUMN AND RUBBED A HOLE IN THE METAL BRAKE LINE CAUSING THE LEAK. THIS VEHICLE HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT AND HAS NEVER BEEN "OFF-ROADING". I CONTACTED DODGE TO REQUEST A REFUND OF THE BRAKE SYSTEM REPAIR AS I FEEL THAT THIS WAS A MANUFACTURING DEFECT AND THE VEHICLE LEFT THE FACTORY WITH THE CONDITION OF THE BRAKE LINE RUBBING THE STEERING COLUMN AND THIS SHOULD BE TREATED THE SAME AS A RECALL. DODGE CASE MANAGEMENT # 59431690. I WAS NOTIFIED BY PHONE TODAY, 9/6/19, THAT DODGE WOULD ONLY REFUND 50% OF THE REPAIR COST. THIS BRAKE SYSTEM FAILURE COULD HAVE CAUSED A VERY SERIOUS ACCIDENT AND EVEN DEATH. ATTACHED ARE COPIES OF THE INVOICE (2 PAGES), AND PICTURES OF THE DAMAGED BRAKE LINE AND WORN AREA ON THE STEERING COLUMN. THE VEHICLE HAS 50,084 MILES ON IT.

I HAVE 2 ACTIVE RECALLS ON THIS VEHICLE, THEY ARE T59, BRAKE BOOSTER WATER SHIELD MAY HAVE BEEN INCORRECTLY INSTALLED, AND P67, OCCUPANT RESTRAINT CONTROL (ORC) MODULE MAY DEVELOP AN INTERNAL FAULT. I HAVE 1 ACTIVE CAMPAIGN ON THIS VEHICLE, IT IS U06, AUTOPARK FUNCTIONALITY. I JUST PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE ON JUNE 23RD, 2018 AT PERFORMANCE DODGE LA VISTA, NEBRASKA. I WAS INFORMED BY THE PERFORMANCE DODGE LA VISTA, NEBRASKA SERVICE DEPARTMENT THAT THE RECALLS WERE PERFORMED, AND NOT REPORTED, DUE TO LACK OF PERSONNEL IN THE RECALLS REPORTING DEPARTMENT. MEANWHILE, I DRIVE A NEW/USED VEHICLE, WONDERING IF THE DEALERSHIP ACTUALLY ADDRESSED THE OPEN RECALLS, AND CAMPAIGN ON MY VEHICLE, WITH MY SAFETY AT RISK. THIS IS HIGHLY UNACCEPTABLE, IT IS NOW SEPTEMBER 16TH, 2018, AND THE RECALLS, AND CAMPAIGN ARE STILL OUTSTANDING ON MY VEHICLE. I AM LOOKING TO YOU FOR ASSISTANCE IN THIS MATTER. I AM ALSO WORRIED IF THE WORK WAS NOT ACTUALLY COMPLETED, AND JUST REPORTED AS COMPLETE BY THE DEALERSHIP, THE THOUGHT OF THIS IS FRIGHTENING, AGAIN, SINCE MY SAFETY, AND THAT OF MY FAMILY, IS AT RISK WHEN OPERATING THIS VEHICLE. THANK YOU FOR LISTENING, AND I HOPE TO HEAR FROM YOU REGARDING A RESOLUTION TO THIS MATTER SOON. MY CAR PRESENTED A SAFETY RELATED DEFECT RECENTLY. I WAS DRIVING IN A CITY STREET TAKING MY KIDS TO SCHOOL WHEN A SIGN OF SERVICE BRAKES APPEARED IN THE SCREEN. THE BRAKES STOOPED WORKING PROPERLY AND I ALMOST HAD AN ACCIDENT PUTTING MY ENTIRE FAMILY IN A VERY UNSAFE CONDITION. WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE KENDALL DODGE DEALER THEY TOLD ME THAT THE CAR HAD HYDRAULIC POWER ASSIST PROBLEM OR BRAKE BOOSTER FAULTY. I PAID THE REPAIR OUT OF MY POCKET. LATER, I FOUND OUT THAT CHRYSLER HAD A RECALL IN 11/2017 FOR THE SAME PROBLEM I HAD HYDRAULIC: POWER ASSIST, RECALL NUMBER T-59. I NEED TO INCLUDE MY CAR IN THE LIST OF THE CARS AFFECTED BY THIS ISSUE. WHEN I CALLED CHRYSLER THEY TOLD TO REPORTED IT TO YOU SO MY CAR CAN BE INCLUDED IN THE RECALL LIST BECAUSE AT THIS TIME IT IS NOT INCLUDED IT IN. I REALLY NEED YOUR HELP BECAUSE DUE TO THE LIMITING BREAKING ABILITY OF MY CAR MY ENTIRE FAMILY WAS EXPOSED TO A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION.

MY BRAKE PEDAL IS HARD AFTER SITTING FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS. AFTER STARTING IT GOES BACK DOWN. I BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALER AND THE FOUND A SMALL VACUUM LEAK FROM THE BRAKE BOOSTER AND THEY SAID IT WAS AN ACCEPTABLE LEAK. IS THIS TRUE? OR SHOULD THERE BE NO VACUUM LEAK AT ALL? I WANT TO MAKE SURE MY CAR IS SAFE. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF I SHOULD BRING IT BACK TO DEALER AND HAVE THEM REPLACE THE BRAKE BOOSTER. THANKS

FIRST INCIDENT WAS TRYING TO BACK OUT OF DRIVEWAY. FELT LIKE BRAKES STAYED APPLIED AND WOULD NOT MOVE, AND HAD TO BE FORCED. SECOND INCIDENT WAS THE NEXT MORNING THE BRAKE PEDDLE WOULD NOT DEPRESS CAUSING LOSS OF BRAKES, AND GOING RIGHT THROUGH A STOP SIGN. THIRD INCIDENT WAS ON THE WAY TO DEALER. STOPPED AT A LIGHT TWO MILES FROM DEALER AND BRAKES STAYED COMPLETELY LOCKED UP. I HAD TO REV THE MOTOR TO BE ABLE TO PULL OFF INTO A PARKING LOT. CALLED FOR A TOW, HAD AN HOUR AND A HALF WAIT TO GO A MILE UP THE ROAD. FINALLY, AFTER SITTING FOR AN HOUR, THE BRAKES RELEASED AND WE WERE ABLE TO GET IT TO DEALER. DURING THIS INCIDENT THE PARK LOCK OUT DID NOT WORK AND THE PEDDLE HAD NO DOWNWARD MOVEMENT. HOWEVER, THE DEALER COULD NOT RECREATE ANY OF THE COMPLAINTS LEADING THEM TO TRY AND SEND US HOME IN IT. I REFUSED AND INSISTED MORE BE DONE TO DIAGNOSE DUE TO THE UNSAFE POSSIBILITIES. *TR
