2014 Dodge Durango Engine Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the engine system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Engine reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Dodge Durango Rt has developed the Evap system failure. After stopping to refuel the gas tank the engine will not restart till after several attempts and even after restarting it idles erratic and sputters even to point of a miss and shuts off. Then it will restart and slowly clear up, and operate normal till the next refuel. I've had it into several repair shops and dealerships only to have to purchase parts and pay for repair and experience the issue again. Considering it's fuel vapor related and could cause a explosive or flash fire event in the dry summer season possibly if the vapors become a large enough volume under the hood or in a closed space.

A new 3.6 Pentastar engine was installed in my 2014 Dodge Durango in July 2019, this repair was over $5,000 and FCA only granted a $1300 goodwill towards the cost. After maintaining the vehicle with a new engine in it, this engine is now failing too. The problem is due to the right cylinder head being damaged. This has caused a knocking noise emitting from the engine and rough idling whenever the vehicle is on. A tune up was done last year in December when check engine light came on, with new spark plugs and filters put in but this has not solved the issued. Taking the vehicle back to mechanic to do further diagnostic, a pressure test was done showing the 6 cylinder had no pressure. A damage head with possible damage to crankshaft rods and rocker arms. This vehicle is our main vehicle for our family, and the price to repair this damage on the second engine this car has had is too high. If we continue driving this vehicle, we would result in total power failure, worst case a blown engine. Complaints have been filed with Attorney General of the state of Florida along with the Better Business Bureau.

The contact owns a 2014 Dodge Durango. The contact stated that he was observing that an oil stain was showing on his driveway. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact had taken the vehicle to an independent mechanic who diagnosed and determined that the oil filter adapter housing needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. However, the contact observed that the oil leak had reoccurred. The contact had taken the vehicle back to the same mechanic who replaced the oil filter adapter housing again, however, the failure reoccurred. The contact returned to the same mechanic who advised that the adapter filter was manufactured with an aluminum housing and no longer in plastic. The contact stated that the mechanic was test-driving the vehicle after he had installed the aluminum oil filter adapter housing. The contact stated that the mechanic advised he was driving at approximately 30 MPH when the vehicle began emitting smoke. The contact was advised by the mechanic that he pulled off of the roadway, and turned the vehicle off, but was unable to open the hood due to flames. The fire department was called and they extinguished the flames. The vehicle was towed back to the mechanic's shop. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000.

Manifold bolts regularly break on Dodge Durango V8 vehicles. Mine are broken, which results in exhaust leak and interferes with the exhaust system, leading to engine check lights and potentially other performance or emissions issues. Symptoms include a loud ticking sound that comes from the engine bay at startup. FCA issued a service bulletin on this known problem and many customers have reported this issue on internet forums dedicated to this vehicle. Several customers have had these bolts break multiple times. The engine block and the manifold are different materials so they expand at different rates with increase in temperature. This places excess stress on small diameter bolts, which eventually fail due to this defect.

The engine was making a loud clicking noise as soon as I started it up. I towed it to the dealer (Sports Durst) and the diagnostic said the engine needs rebuilding. The SUV has only 80.041 miles on it and the engine has deteriorated is a common problem with this mileage. There are comments all over the internet about the Hemi 5.7 engine failing around 80,000 miles. I should not have to pay to repair an engine this is already defective when it leaves the factory.

1st ALL of the interior lights won’t turn off no matter what you do. Doors all closed locked still stay on while driving can’t manually switch them off 2nd yesterday I went to pick up my daughter at school and the car all of a sudden just stopped running. It won’t start. Before it would do that and I had to exit the vehicle and use the remote start. Tried it this time and it said fob deactivated and just beeped. Then the alarm went off and wouldn’t turn off. When the alarm finally stopped the radio turned on for no reason but the car still won’t start. Fob has a new battery still won’t start. This car isn’t even old and only has 60,000 miles on it. Lucky I was pulling over and parking I could have died. Apparently this is a known issue it had to happen to me for me to find out about it. You’ll do a recall for cruise control but not this!!!’ Crazy this car is a defective death trap. It’s sitting on the curb in front of the house now since I had to have it towed home. I’m NOT driving it ever again.

THIS SPECIFIC MODEL I'M CURRENTLY LEASING IS A LIMITED MODEL. I'VE HAD IT FOR MAYBE 3 YEARS. ACCORDING TO THE MANUAL, WERE ONLY TO USE E85 FUEL SO THAT IT COULD RUN SMOOTHLY. UNFORTUNATELY, NOT MANY GAS STATIONS WHERE I LIVE CARRY THAT SPECIFIC GAS TYPE AND NOT MANY GAS STATIONS IN FLORIDA AND OTHER STATES ALONE, PROVIDE E85 FUEL WE ARE GIVEN NO CHOICE BUT TO USE THE ALTERNATIVE GAS. IT'S BECOMING A NUISANCE WHEN WE WANT TO TRAVEL. WHEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT FIRST APPEARED THE GAS GAUGE ALSO STOPPED FUNCTIONING. THE TRUCK ISN'T ABLE TO REACH A FULL TANK. SOMETHING IS PREVENTING IT. THIS IS BECOMING AN INCONVENIENCE FOR ME AND MY FAMILY TO HAVE TO SEARCH AND GO TO JUST 2 GAS STATIONS MILES APART FROM EACH OTHER TO BE ABLE TO PUT GAS IN! MAJORITY OF THE TIMES THE GAS STATIONS THAT DO OFFER THIS TYPE OF GAS ARE DOWN DUE TO MAINTENANCE. SINCE I'VE BEEN PUTTTING IN THE ALTERNATIVE FUEL WHICH IS THE 87, THE TRUCK ISN'T FUNCTIONING PROPERLY AND NOW I'M STARTING TO HAVE ALL SORTS OF PROBLEM WITH MY TRUCK. IT'S A HEADACHE. I REALLY LOVE MY TRUCK AND DON'T WANT TO GET RID OF IT. I HAD A MECHANIC CHECK IT OUT AND WAS TOLD THAT MY MY FUEL INJECTOR AND FUEL SENSOR NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE COSTS ARE EXPENSIVE AND I DON'T THINK IT'S FAIR.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 DODGE DURANGO. THE CONTACT STATED THAT A TICKING NOISE OCCURRED COMING FROM THE ENGINE. THE ENGINE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE ENGINE LIGHT WAS FLICKERING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC AND WAS DIAGNOSED HOWEVER, THE MECHANIC WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE WHERE THE TICKING NOISE WAS COMING FROM. THE MECHANIC INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT IT COULD BE THE LIFTER OF THE CYLINDER HEAD. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE OXYGEN SENSOR, SPARK PLUGS, AND COIL PACKS WERE REPLACED. THE CONTACT CALLED JIMMY BRITT CHRYSLER JEEP DODGE RAM (12114 US-301 S, STATESBORO, GA 30458) AND INFORMED THE DEALER OF THE FAILURE, AND WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WOULD BE A FEE FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE CONTACT WAS ALSO INFORMED BY THE DEALER THAT CHRYSLER HAD EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON THE TICKING FAILURE HOWEVER, HER VEHICLE YEAR WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 156,000.

1. WHEN I WANT TO START MY CAR IT CRANKS MORE AND LONG AND DOES NOT START IN FIRST ATTEMPT, SECOND ATTEMPT IT STARTS. TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER THEY TOLD FUEL PUMP, AND WHEN THE PROBLEM STARTED ITS JUST ONLY 110000KMS. SEND THE MESSAGE TO FCA THEY DOES NOT CARE THEY TOLD THE CAR FINISHED MANUFACTURER WARRANTY WE HAVE TO REPAIR AND ITS A KNOWN PROBLEM FOR THEM. FUNNY PART IS MY FRIEND ALSO TOOK THE SAME CAR SAME MODEL WITH ONE WEEK DIFFERENCE HE ALSO FACE THE SAME ISSUES ON SAME MONTH ON 2020 OCT I BELIVE. I ALREADY REPORTED BUT NO RESPONSE. THIS FUEL PUMP CAN CAUSE PROBLEM WHILE DRIVING ALSO IF PRESSURE FAILS AND NO SUPPLY OF FUEL THEN ITBCAN CAUSE ACCIDENT. THE OTHER THING IS SOME OTHER MANUFACTURER FOR AMERICAN AND GERMAN CARS ALREADY CALLED FOR RECALL DUE TO FUEL PUMP ON JAN 2021, STILL FCA MANUFACTURER DOES NOT CARE THEY JUST IGNORE THE COMPLAINT AND ISSUE TELLING WARRANTY FINISH. 2. MY SECOND ISSUE HAPPEND WHEN AROUND 65000 LMS ENGINE IS GIVING NOISE TICKING, DEALER TOLD TAPPET ISSUE WARRANTY FINISHED CANT DO ANYTHING. U CAN DRIVE ITS JUST GIVE SOUND ONLY. NOW THE SOUND IS INCREASED AND I INFORMED MANUFACTURER THEY TOLD Y I DID NOT TELL BEFORE MY WARRANTY FOR CAR IS FINISHED, AND IF WE GO AND CHECK 2014 MODEL DURANGO THE PROBLEM OS COMMON AND THEY DONT WANT TO FIX THEY JUST WANT US TO PAY HUGE AMOUNT OF MONEY TO REPAIR OUR OWN, THEY KNOWS THEIR CAR HAVE THESE PROBLEMS AND THEY NEVER BOTHERED. ON MY VIEW THEY HAVE TO TAKE INITIATIVE TO RECALL TO FIX. IF U GO TO COMPLAINT FORUM THERE IS LOT LIKE THIS PROBLM. FCA JUST DONT CARE AFTER THEY SELL THEIR CAR AND WANT TO PAY HUGE AMOUNT OF MONEY AMD DOES NOT GIVE RELIABLE CAR. NHSTA HAVE TO INVOLVE AND TAKE ACTION. HOPE I WILL GET POSITIVE ACTION FROM NHSTA WHERE MANUFACTURER IGNORED.

I HAD SIGNIFICANT OIL LEAKS IN MY DRIVEWAY FOR THE LAST FEW MONTHS. I NOTICED MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON AT 105,000 MILES. I TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC TO GET SERVICED. THEY REPLACED TRANSMISSION FLUID (PURCHASED AT DODGE DEALERSHIP) AND SERVICED ANY OTHER AREAS. I RECEIVED THE VEHICLE BACK AND NOTICED IT WAS STILL LEAKING A GREAT AMOUNT. I TOOK IT BACK TO THE MECHANIC THINKING THE ISSUE WAS NOT SOLVED. THE MECHANIC THEN ADVISED ME THAT THERE IS AN OIL LEAK NEXT TO THE OIL COOLER AND WHEN PARKED AT AN INCLINE, IT BEGINS TO LEAK PROFUSELY. HE SAID THIS IS VERY COMMON WITH DODGE DURANGO'S AND REACHED OUT TO THE DEALERSHIP TO INQUIRE ABOUT RECALLS. THEY INDICATED THERE IS NO CURRENT RECALL. THIS IS VERY DISAPPOINTING. I HAVE SELDOM DRIVEN THE CAR SINCE THE PANDEMIC AND HAVE UPKEEP THE MAINTENANCE ON THE VEHICLE. I AM THE SECOND OWNER AND PURCHASED THE VEHICLE IN 2016.

1. RECENTLY 2 WEEKS BACK MY CAR DURING STARTING IT CRANKS MORE TIME AND AFTER SWITCH OFF AND SECOND ATTEMPT IT STARTS. WHEN STARTING WITH REMOTE THE ENGINE STARTS NORMAL WITH NORMAL CRANKING. BATTERY VOLTAGE EVERYTHING CHECKED ALL OK. DEALER IS TELLING MAY BE FUEL PUMP TO CHECK EVEN THEY ASK MORE MONEY. MY CONCERN IS MY FRIEND ALSO BOUGHT SAME MODEL CAR ON SAME WEEK PURCHASED AND WHEN I CHECKED WITH HIM HE ALSO HAVE THE SAME ISSUE AND PROBLEM CAME SAME TIME. THAT MEANS THE COMPONENT HAVE SOME MANUFACTURER DEFECT WHICH WILL RESULT IN SAFETY. MANUFACTURER SHOULD LOOK INTO THE MATTER AND RECALL FOR THE DEFECT AND FIX DUE TO SAME BATCH CAR HAVE SAME FAULT OR DEFECT. 2. MY CAR ENGINE HAVE SOME TICKING NOISE WHICH WAS NOTICED JUST AFTER FINISHED THE WARRANTY. SO WHEN CHECKED WITH DEALER HEY TOLD WARRANTY FINISHED THIS IS VALVE LIFTER ISSUE AND IT SHOULD BE CHANGED WHICH THE PRICE IS TOO HIGH AND I ASKED FOR JUST CROSSED WARRANTY KILOMETER OF 60000, IT CAME AROUND 65000 KM AND WHEN I TOLD DEALER THEY ADVISE TO CHANGE AND NOTHING CAN BE REPORTED I HAVE TO PAY FULL AND IT WIL NOT HARM YOU CAN DRIVE, NOW CAR DROVE AROUND 118000KM WITH THAT SOUND AND NOW I CAN HEAR THE SOUND IS MORE THIS ALSO SOME MANUFACTURER ISSUE WHICH DEALER DID NOT NOTIFY THE MANUFACTURER TELING JUST CHANGE THE PARTS VALVE LIFTER AND MAY BE CAMSHAFT ETC. IF THIS ISSUE US COMING JUST AFTER WARRANTY PERIOD THE COMPANY SHOULD TAKE UNTI ACCOUNT THE ISSUE AND FIND SOLUTION BY RECALLING AND FIXING THE ISSUE.

INTERMITTENT NO START CONDITION/START AND SHUT OFF AT ANY TIME WHICH STARTED AFTER VEHICLE TAKEN TO DEALER TO COMPLETE TRANS COOLER CONDENSER/MOTOR MOUNTS/RADIO REPLACEMENT. CAN HAPPEN AT COLD START OR AFTER VEHICLE HAS BEEN DRIVEN. THIS HAS HAPPENED 6 TIMES IN A COURSE OF ALMOST 3 MONTHS. VEHICLE TAKEN TO SCOTT ROBINSON DODGE IN TORRANCE, CA 3 TIMES FOR THIS ISSUE AND THEY ARE UNABLE TO PROPERLY DIAGNOSE AND REPAIR. HAD ME REPLACE BATTERY AND STARTER. CONDITION STILL EXISTS. DEALER IS PLAYING GUESSING GAMES WITH THE REPAIRS NEEDED FOR MY VEHICLE. I ASKED DEALER TO CHECK FUSES AND WIRES TO TIPM. I BELIEVE MY VEHICLE IS BEING AFFECTED BY THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 19V813000 AND OTHERS WHICH AFFECTED 2011-2013 DURANGO'S. OTHER 2014 DURANGO OWNERS HAVE COMPLAINED OF A SIMILAR EXPERIENCE. A RANDOM NO START/STALL CONDITION IS VERY CONCERNING SINCE THAT INCREASES MY CHANCES OF A STALL, CRASH AND BEING STRANDED. MULTIPLE TIMES I HAVE HAD MY CHILDREN IN THE CAR SCARED BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WILL NOT START. IF THE DEALER IS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE AND COMPLETE REPAIRS, THEN WHO CAN?? I HAVE YOUNG CHILDREN AND THIS IS MY ONLY MODE OF TRANSPORTATION. I AM WITHOUT A VEHICLE AND NO LOANER GIVEN BY THE DEALER. IF IT WEREN'T FOR COVID, I'D REALLY BE OUT OF LUCK WITH NO OTHER MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION. CHRYSLER NEEDS REVIEW AND EXPAND THE CURRENT RECALLS TO INCLUDE 2014 MODELS OR MAYBE A NEW ISSUE NEEDS TO BE IDENTIFIED AND BROUGHT TO LIGHT. VEHICLE ISSUE STARTED 09/05/20 AND HAS CONTINUED SINCE. SUV TAKEN TO DEALER 10/09/20, 10/21/20 & 11/04/20 FOR ISSUE. THEY ALSO ADVISED ON MY 10/21/20 VISIT THAT MY EXHAUST MANIFOLD BOLTS ARE BROKEN WHICH IS CAUSING A TICKING NOISE AT START UP. THIS WAS NEVER DIAGNOSED AT PREVIOUS VISITS AND NOISE HAS BEEN THERE. I HAVE ATTACHED A MORE COMPREHENSIVE REPORT.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO SEVERAL INDEPENDENT MECHANICS WHO WERE UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. UPON INVESTIGATION, THE CONTACT DISCOVERED ONLINE BY OTHER DODGE DURANGO OWNERS THAT THE DEFECT WAS RELATED TO THE ENGINE LIFTERS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE VIN WAS NOT UNDER RECALL. THE CONTACT WAS PROVIDED A CASE NUMBER AND TRANSFERRED TO NHTSA FOR ASSISTANCE. WHILE TRAVELING ON THE INTERSTATE 80 MILES FROM HOME THE COOLANT LIGHT WENT OFF AND THE TEMP GAUGE RAN HOT. PULLED OVER AND COOLED DOWN; LIGHTS WENT OFF. PULLED UP INFO FOR A NEARBY DEALERSHIP AND TRIED TO DRIVE TO IT . ONLY GOT ABOUT A MILE AND LIGHTS AND GAUGE WENT OFF AGAIN. TRIED TO FIND A SAFE SPACE TO PULL OVER ON INTERSTATE; THE SHOULDERS ARE VERY NARROW ON I45. WHEN PULLED OVER ENGINE LIGHT ALSO CAME ON AND I TURNED ENGINE OFF AND IT WOULD NOT RESTART. CALLED TOW TRUCK, DEALERSHIP REPLACED WATER PUMP BUT THEN FOUND CATASTROPHIC ENGINE DAMAGE. FCA KNOWS THERE'S A PROBLEM WITH WATER PUMP BECAUSE THEY EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON IT BUT THEY WILL NOT HONOR WARRANTY ON ENGINE BECAUSE THEY SAY I CONTINUED TO DRIVE WITH ENGINE LIGHT ON WHICH I DIDN'T. IF WATER PUMP HAD BEEN RECALLED I NEVER WOULD HAVE HAD CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE.
