What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2020 Ford F-150, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
There has been harsh shifting observed, both cold and warm. Often when downshifting and slowing to a turn or stop, there is a violent slamming into gear. I have also observed slipping in 3rd gear and making harsh shifts that appear to skip gears by the indicator. This is not a constant but intermittent issue. I have not taken it to the dealership because they will likely not be able to duplicate it in a reasonable amount of time.
Truck equipped with the 10R80 downshifted from 10th gear to 1st gear while on the freeway doing 80mph. NOT SAFE AT ALL.
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
Camshaft had to be replaced a couple years ago, followed by cam shaft sensor. Then another $6,300 of "critical" issu3s to be fixed. The vehicle is 5 1/2 y/o. Absolutely ridiculous that this amount of money is required for such a young vehicle.
I. Vehicle Purchase and Maintenance History In September 2020, I purchased this 2020 Ford F-150 new. II. Chronology of Defect and Repair Attempts Around 33,000 miles, the vehicle began exhibiting severe excessive oil consumption, an audible engine noise, and visible blue/gray smoke puffs emitting from the exhaust system. The following timeline outlines my exhaustive efforts to have Ford remedy this under warranty: • March 14, 2025 (36,370 miles): First formally reported the noise and exhaust smoke to Service Advisor Shelby Ray. The dealership initiated an official Ford Oil Consumption Test. I was instructed to drive 1,000-mile increments and return for unrecorded level checks. • May 21, 2025 (38,200 miles): Second formal report. The dealership performed Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) 192365 CP:6006, an established protocol recognizing inherent oil consumption flaws in this specific 5.0L engine. • August 7, 2025 – September 11, 2025 (41,119 miles): Third formal report. The vehicle was left at Tony Serra Ford for over a month (RO # 6034434) to perform engine repairs mandated by Ford tech lines. A loaner vehicle was provided. • December 9, 2025 (44,144 miles): Fourth formal report. The defect was noted as unresolved and still present between oil changes. The engine was found to be 2 quarts low on oil upon arrival. A new tech line case was opened. • May 7, 2026 – Present (48,086 miles): Fifth formal report. The engine noise and exhaust smoke. Truck has been at dealer for 3 months with no resolution.
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
The contact owns a 2020 Ford F-150. The contact stated that the radio was inoperable, and the audible alerts failed to operate as needed. The start-of-trip and seat belt chime failed to operate while the seat belt was unbuckled. Additionally, there was no chime while the key was in the ignition or while the door was opened. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed Audio Control Module (ACM) failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 176,792.
Visibility
Reports naming windshields, glass, wipers, defrosters and mirrors.
From owner reports, verbatim
Wiper blades are going very slow/failing like other model years/recalls.
My rear back up camera all of a sudden does not have a clear view when backing up, the view is very grainy, and you cannot see anything behind you, Ford has recalled 1.4 million back up camera's and is tell me my truck is not affected, but the same year trucks are also affected by the recall.
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
This vehicle has occasional issues where the vehicle camera freezes and blacks out when backing up. This vehicle has a similar issue to another recall that was issued on a newer vehicle in our fleet, which was a 2022 Ford F-150 and was included in the NHTSA Recall 25V315/Safety Recall Notice 25S49. This vehicle has been regularly serviced and inspected by the Dublin City Shop.
Over the past year (2025) we have noticed that our F150 King Ranch occasionally was having a rough or harsh shift between the 7-8 gear. We took the Truck to the dealer where we purchased the Truck, Mullnax Ford of Central Florida, in the summer of 2025. We left the vehicle with the service manager, later he called us and indicated that the technician could not replicate the issue. Several months later in November, 2025, with the problem recurring all the time and also happening at other shift points. We took the truck back to the dealer, Mullnax Ford of Central Florida, 1551 E Semoran Blvd, Apopka, FL 32703. We left the vehicle with the service advisor, Sam. Later that day the service manager Sam said the technician “test drove the truck and said needs a new transmission at a cost of almost $10,000.” Based on research I conducted I determined that there was an existing TSB 25-2475 recently issued October 25, 2025 regarding this harsh/delayed shifting issue on the 10R80 transmission and applicable to our Truck. We have taking the truck to 2 Ford dealers asking them to perform the diagnostic process outlined in TSB 25-2475 The harsh shifting is not only annoying, the sudden sharp shift especially at lower speed presents a possible significant safety risk. The harsh shift many times causes the vehicle to lurch unexpectedly. The truck is only 5 years old and has less than 100k miles We sent certified letters to the CEO of Ford and to the Ford Customer Relationship Center, with no response. This is a wide spread problem and is well known to Ford.
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
The brake line on the front passenger side was rubbing and failed. We were put at risk because the brakes lost fluid. We have had 4 identical vehicles with the same issue, 3 failed and 1 was replaced before failure. Not to my knowledge has it been inspected other than a dealership and tech. There were no warning lights.
On March 3, 2026, I went in for two oil leaks. I received a call saying my truck was ready. I went to pick up my, drove off into the freeway. Everything was running smoothly until the anti-braking system turned on, cutting off power to my brakes. I was in the second to the last lane, luckily I was able to get to the last lane. I was almost hit and almost caused a huge accident. The dealership has offered to review the truck again. I paid close to six thousand dollars and it wasn’t for my brakes. I want my money back.
Body & structure
Reports naming the vehicle structure, frame, body panels, doors, hood and trim.
From owner reports, verbatim
Drivers side door does not unlock in cold temperatures (physical key, fob button, keypad, and handle lock do not work). To unlock I have to enter through the passenger side door and use the interior handle. Seems to be an ongoing issue and there are "recalls/TSB" for the same issue happening on 2015-2019, 2021-22 models but not 2020. "The major frozen door latch recalls (such as 17S33) officially covered 2015-2019 F-150s and other Super Duty trucks." Reddit forums are full of others complaining of the same issues. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? - Driver side door handle. Yes How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? - Must enter through the passenger side door to unlock the vehicle. In an emergency I would not be able to enter my vehicle quickly. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? no.

Reports naming suspension components — springs, struts, shocks, control arms and related hardware.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2020 Ford F-150. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, there was a rattling sound coming from the front-end of the vehicle. Upon inspection, it was discovered that the front driver’s and passenger’s side shock absorber springs were cracked and fractured, causing damages to several suspension components on the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who informed the contact that the shock absorbers and springs needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 34,000.
With 72,000 miles the driver's side spring broke just setting in our driveway. Unknown to my wife who drove it 7 miles to work with a broken suspension spring. Within 200 miles the other spring broke on the passenger front while going down the road. Didn't hit a bump and was going straight. This one also snapped with no notice and i had visually inspected it days before. We were going 15-20 mph when it broke and were able to safely pull off the road. Unheard of them breaking when the vehicle is only driven on the paved roadways and not off used off road. Cost approximately $1,200 to just repair the driver front at a shop.
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
While driving, my 2020 Ford F-150 suddenly displayed a warning on the dashboard that read “Steering Assist Fault – Service Req’d.” Moments later, the truck completely lost power steering, and the steering wheel began to lock up while the vehicle was still in motion. I, (the owner of the vehicle), was able to muscle the steering wheel just enough to safely get us off the road and home. Had he not had the physical strength and experience to manage the vehicle manually, this could have resulted in a major accident or fatality. The truck was towed to Duval Ford on October 13, 2025, where it was diagnosed as needing an electronic power steering rack replacement, with a total repair estimate of $4,049.70. The vehicle is not under warranty, and Ford has informed us there is no recall currently associated with this issue. This is a critical safety failure of a steering system and should not be happening at any mileage. We are reporting this incident to request a formal NHTSA investigation into this issue, as it could easily lead to severe injuries or death in other cases.
I brought my 2020 F-150 XLT to Cook Ford Texas City for a recall (24E12 PM reprogramming) and a steering issue that have happened while driving and making me loose control, almost hitting the vehicle front! After spending over $3,400 to get the whole steering system changed, I picked up my truck thinking everything was good. Within one day of the recall being done, my check engine light came on with an emissions fault. When I asked about it, I was told this was "normal" after the recall because now the PCM is able to read codes. But it feels shady that a brand-new problem shows up immediately after a recall reprogramming. Now, I'm being told I might have to pay for even more expensive repairs like a catalytic converter (5k for both) - right after just spending thousands. It's frustrating, stressful, and feels like a never-ending cycle. After looking online, I found many other Ford owners sharing the same experience with this recall on forums like Reddit. That makes me believe this is not an isolated case.

From owner reports, verbatim
My truck is a 2020 F150 3.5 eco-boost four-wheel-drive, 41,000 miles I’ve owned the truck since November 20th 2021, the mileage at time of purchase was 28,211. Less than 30 days later I had taken it to the Ford dealership to have the IWE’s replaced and wheel bearings, which is the four-wheel-drive locking hub assembly. It took them over six months to fix it. Now, December 1, 2025 the same problem has returned the IWE’s have failed, when they fail metal shavings goes into the wheel bearings. Mind you this is less than 13,000 miles since the first repair. Upon picking my truck up from Ford on a Friday afternoon at 5 PM, January 9, 2026. Upon start up now, my cam phases are rattling.. I even asked Ford. I lost over seven months of driving my pick up and not being able to use my warranty because it’s set up the dealership for so long. Now it’s out of warranty and I’ve left looking at over $6500 to fix the cam phaser issue that they knew was bad and they didn’t recall them. So as of today, January 11, 2026 my truck has 41,000 miles on it. I have driven it less than 13,000 miles in five years. And I’m not looking forward to having to fix the transmission as well because it has a major issue and that should’ve been recalled as well. Ford is leaving us hanging out there with these trucks that cost over $50,000 and in the end it’s gonna cost us another 20 to 30,000 to fix them. Ford still hasn’t fixed the recall that is presently out as well for the sync and back up camera.
The padding on the headrest part of the car seat is broken.

Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.
From owner reports, verbatim
The headlights on this model are not effective enough to see safely at night. I have trouble seeing pedestrians and wildlife. I have adjusted the headlights and seen several complaints online about this same issue. I spoke with a dealership about it and they stated it’s a common complaint they get as well, and they offered to upgrade my headlights to an LED model for roughly $2,000. In todays time, a brand new truck should have quality lighting. They are the dimmest lights I’ve had on any vehicle I’ve ever operated.
bolts falling out that connect the grounding wire on the passenger and driver side rear frame. causes all lights on both side to not work. No notification is given for this fault. May cause you to drive without know that you have no stop lights turn singles.

Tires & wheels
Reports naming tires, wheels, hubs, or the tire-pressure monitoring system.
From owner reports, verbatim

Vehicle has 8000 miles on it. Tires were put on by Ford dealership. They are the Goodyear Wrangler territory at tires. They are considered a new tire that was created by Goodyear this year. The tires have not been taken off road. Tires have only been driven on pavement to and from carpool. The front passenger tire was taken in to discount tire to have the tire assessed of why it was losing air pressure constantly. The side wall that faces out, has A split on the sidewall. It does not appear to be a puncture. It is very small and could barely be seen. It looks to be dried and splitting. No curbs have been hit with that front tire. Another tire previously had been taken from the back end to the dealership to be looked at for losing air. Iraq had ripped the rubber between the tire tread and created a hole. Again tires were at 3000 miles at this point in February and had not been taken off road at this point either. Goodyear was contacted because the owners had to pay out of pocket to completely replace the tire and a good year paid half of the cost for a new tire as part of their bad luck new car owner program. The tires are supposed to be an upgrade and be all-terrain. They have not even been taken off road and have had and now two major incidences. The tires seem very weak and there are currently no recalls because they have only been on vehicles for a short period of time. We have not been able to find them in any place other than the dealership to replace the tire because they are still so new. They seem very weak and have 8000 miles on the vehicle currently and are struggling to not crack.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers.
