Owner-reported complaints naming the powertrain system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Powertrain (other) reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

On two occasions vehicle failed 3-4 upshift and abruptly shifted into first instead. Transmission harshness/flaring. I am experiencing intermittent flaring/slippage and harshness with the 3-4 upshift and 4-3 downshift, 4-5 upshift, and 7-8 upshift. Most of the time, it exhibits as a flare/slip/bogging down during the 3-4 upshift, sometimes accompanied by a slam once it catches. Less often there is a slam during the 4-3 downshift or 3-1 downshift, especially when coming to a stop. The issue is more pronounced when the transmission is cold but does occur when fully warmed up, just far less frequently.

I am reporting a safety-related defect involving the 10R80 automatic transmission in my 2022 Ford F-150 STX. While slowing to a stop during normal driving, the transmission unexpectedly performed an extremely harsh downshift. The truck jerked forward violently as it shifted into a lower gear, making it difficult to slow the vehicle in a smooth and predictable manner. This occurred without warning and created a dangerous situation while approaching an intersection. A vehicle should decelerate in a controlled and predictable way. Instead, the sudden downshift upset the vehicle’s behavior and reduced my confidence in its safe operation. If this happens in heavy traffic, on wet roads, or near pedestrians, it could easily contribute to a crash. This is not simply an issue of comfort or drivability. It is a safety concern because it affects the driver’s ability to safely control the vehicle. My truck is equipped with Ford’s 10R80 transmission, which has been the subject of thousands of owner complaints describing harsh downshifts, delayed engagement, slipping, gear hunting, and other dangerous shifting behavior. Publicly available technical information also discusses failures involving the CDF clutch cylinder and sleeve, which can cause hydraulic pressure loss and unpredictable transmission operation. Based on my experience and the large number of similar reports from other owners, I believe this issue deserves a thorough safety investigation. NHTSA should review warranty claims, dealer repair records, transmission replacements, technical service information, and consumer complaints to determine whether this transmission contains a safety-related defect that warrants a recall or other corrective action. Owners should not have to wait until a harsh downshift causes a serious collision before this issue is addressed. I respectfully request that NHTSA investigate this defect and require an effective repair to protect drivers, passengers, and everyone sharing the road

I am reporting a safety-related transmission problem I experienced with my 2022 Ford F-150 equipped with the 10R80 automatic transmission. While driving normally, the transmission suddenly shift hard in lower gears. It upshifts hard and downshifts really hard, it feels like someone runs into you. This occurs in stop and go traffic or slow moving traffic creating a potentially dangerous situation because the truck did not respond as expected when I needed predictable acceleration or propulsion and braking. I believe this incident may be related to the known 10R80 CDF clutch-cylinder/sleeve problem. Ford technical information identifies axial movement of the CDF sleeve that can cause hydraulic-circui

I am reporting a safety-related transmission problem I experienced with my 2022 Ford F-150 equipped with the 10R80 automatic transmission. While driving normally, the transmission shifts in fourth thinks about it then applies the power This occurred while I merge onto the interstate creating a scary moment of trying to get up to speed with the traffic and it happens often , creating a potentially dangerous situation because the truck did not respond as expected when I needed predictable acceleration or propulsion. I believe this incident may be related to the known 10R80 CDF clutch-cylinder/sleeve problem. Ford technical information identifies axial movement of the CDF sleeve that can cause hydraulic-circuit leaks and harsh or delayed engagement and shifting. This condition can result in slipping, RPM flares, delayed engagement, unexpected gear changes, harsh downshifts, lurching, or loss of propulsion. This is a safety concern, not merely a transmission quality or reliability issue. Unexpected loss of propulsion or unpredictable shifting while merging, accelerating into traffic, crossing an intersection, turning, or traveling at highway speed can create a collision hazard. Because I personally experienced this unexpected transmission event, I request that NHTSA investigate the 10R80 CDF clutch-cylinder/sleeve condition in Ford F-150s. Please review Ford warranty claims, dealer repair records, transmission replacements, consumer complaints, and field-failure data to determine whether this is a safety defect requiring a recall. I believe owners should not have to wait for a potentially dangerous transmission failure before this known condition is addressed.

2017–2023 F-150 OWNERS — 10R80 TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS: PLEASE REPORT TO NHTSA I’ve experienced hard/violent shifting, slipping, RPM flares, delayed engagement, unexpected downshifts, lurching, loss of a gear, loss of propulsion, or other abnormal behavior from the 10R80 transmission, and am filing a safety complaint with NHTSA. This isn't just about an expensive transmission repair. Unexpected loss of propulsion or unpredictable shifting can become a serious safety issue, especially when merging onto a highway, accelerating into traffic, crossing an intersection, turning, or trying to avoid another vehicle. Ford has technical information addressing the CDF clutch-cylinder/sleeve issue in 10R80-equipped F-150s. The documented condition involves movement of the CDF sleeve that can cause hydraulic-circuit leaks and result in harsh or delayed engagement and shifting. I am reporting a safety-related transmission problem I experienced with my 2022 Ford F-150 equipped with the 10R80 automatic transmission. While driving normally, the transmission suddenly failed to engage, shifted violently, RPMs flared, and unexpectedly downshifted. This occurred while driving normally (accelerating, merging onto a highway, turning, crossing an intersection, traveling at highway speed, stop-and-go traffic, etc.), creating a potentially dangerous situation because the truck did not respond as expected when I needed predictable acceleration or propulsion. Unexpected loss of propulsion or unpredictable shifting.

Crash reported

I experienced an unintended-acceleration event in a parking lot while maneuvering at low speed. I was alternating between Reverse and Drive to adjust the vehicle’s position within a parking space when, after selecting Drive, the truck unexpectedly surged forward with substantial acceleration. I applied the brakes immediately and with significant force, but the brake pedal felt unusually soft and stopping response seemed reduced. The vehicle struck a large commercial trash bin; I narrowly avoided striking the building behind it. Damage was primarily superficial, but the incident had clear potential for more serious property damage or injury. I have prior experience operating EVs with one-pedal driving and do not believe this event resulted from driver error. Following the incident, I disabled one-pedal driving and have used traditional drive mode. I have not experienced another unintended-acceleration event since making that change. Given the low-speed maneuver, the sudden forward surge, and the apparent relationship to one-pedal-drive operation, I believe the event warrants formal documentation and technical investigation.

I've spent hours trying to get Ford to fix the 23S65 hub recall. I get nowhere. Finally got a case number - # XXX-XXX. Recall started 2023 if I'm not mistaking. I've called dealer many times and they say Ford. Ford can find parts for new vehicles but not for my truck. I bought the truck to tow but I'm scared to use it. It seems Ford will never "have" parts. It feels like they want me to crash it or get stranded before fixing it. They have the parts. Just for new trucks or people whose trucks are completely broken. I want to tow but I can't. Dealer is now saying...parts sometime in Q3. That just keeps getting extented. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

I was driving my 2022 F150 during the 5/5/2026 Northern Colorado blizzard home to Nebraska with Slippery mode selected on Drive Train Selector and the truck started violently rattling and seized, causing catastrophic drivetrain failure with loss of power and perceptible steering control. I immediately pulled off I80 near my fueling stop destination and turned off the truck. I opened the hood to vent smoke and assess for fire. Once fire was not an issue, I started the ignition sequence to view any warning lights before starting motor. There were no warning lights or sensors indicating loss of fluids or abnormal temperatures noted in oil or transmission. The motor started and then I tried shifting through the transmission. It would engage but not move forward in any of the Drive Train Selector settings. I could travel in reverse and place in neutral, but I could not manually move forward or back when I pushed. I called Ford Roadside Assistance for towing and was flat-bedded to Sterling Korf Ford where catastrophic front end differential and assembly was noted. I had an experience leaving my work parking lot 2/27/2026, and have a malfunction warning on my vehicle phone app. That event was corrected by stopping and rotating through the Drive Train Selector switch out of 4x4 to 2H. I had 100K mile full service at Greeley, CO, Ford in July 2025 with all fluids flushed and filled and multipoint inspection. I feel this is a mechanical design flaw in the Integrated Wheel End (IWE). And with no dashboard warning to hint at impending catastrophic failure, this warrants immediate recall notice. I was fortunate not to be in heavy traffic when catastrophic failure happened, otherwise an accident would have occurred. I am a [XXX] career Emergency Physician and have enough experience to know when there is a system failure and a near miss. This is not an isolated human event leading to a sentinel event, but a system failure that must be fixed before lives are lost. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF

I purchased my truck brand new in July 2022 from Auto Saver Ford in New York. Roughly between 5000 and 10,000 miles at a certain speed the 10 R 80 transmission in my truck would unexpectedly violently slam into a lower gear, causing my truck immediately go to a slower speed, and that I was not ready for. I brought it back multiple times to the dealership under warranty. They told me they fixed the problem however, I continue to have the same issues. Ford is telling me now they will not fix it even though I do have confirmation from a Ford dealer that the Park Paul in the Transmission is damaged and can cause the vehicle to slam into park even if I’m doing 70 miles an hour on the highway. There was an initial recall done however the my truck was made at the Kentucky truck plant where the issue was initiated. However, Ford claims there were specific dates they noted. They had issues building these transmissions and my truck missed the deadline by one month even though I’m having the same exact problems.

My vehicle was subject to Recall FSA 23S65, which addresses a defect involving the rear axle hub bolt. I brought the vehicle to a Ford-authorized dealership for the recall repair; however, the repair was not properly completed. The rear axle hub bolt subsequently failed, confirming that the recall defect was not adequately remedied. After the bolt failure, I returned the vehicle to the dealership, where technicians stated that the differential is now damaged. They claim that an axle bearing failed independently and dispersed metal contaminants throughout the differential, characterizing this as a coincidence unrelated to the recall issue. However, upon further review by a mechanic, it appears far more likely that the axle bolt failure directly caused or contributed to the bearing failure and resulting differential damage. The vehicle now produces a humming noise while driving, and I have been strongly advised that it is unsafe to operate. Despite multiple attempts to resolve this matter with both the dealership and Ford Motor Company, I have been unable to obtain a satisfactory response or corrective action. This situation raises serious concerns regarding the adequacy of the recall repair and the resulting safety risk.
