2009 Ford Fusion Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2009 Ford Fusion, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

TAKATA RECALL. VEHICLE STATIONARY ON JANUARY 18, 2019 THE PASSENGER AIR BAG INFLATOR WAS REPLACED UNDER THE 18S01 RECALL, FORD PART NUMBER 8E5Z 54044A74 AD. ON SEPTEMBER 10, 2019 BROUGHT CAR INTO LOCAL QUIRK FORD DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE BECAUSE AIR BAG COVER WAS NO LONGER WAS FLUSH TO THE DASHBOARD. FORD SERVICE SAID PROBLEM WAS DUE TO "WORN DASHBOARD" AND NOT COVERED UNDER RECALL. SEE FIRST ATTACHED PICTURE. CALLED FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE ON SEPT 11, 2019 WAS TOLD PROBLEM WAS NOT COVERED UNDER ANY RECALLS OR ANY WARRANTIES, CASE NUMBER CAS-24226208-S8R0V4. MY CONCERN IS THAT BY HAVING AN OPEN CORNER (SEE SECOND ATTACHED PICTURE) FOREIGN OBJECTS COULD ACCIDENTALLY FALL INTO THIS SPACE WITHOUT THE DRIVERS KNOWLEDGE (IE. A PENNY, DIME, ETC) AND IF THE AIR BAG DEPLOYED A SERIOUS INJURY COULD OCCUR. SPECIFICALLY, FOREIGN OBJECTS COULD BECOME AIR BORNE WHEN AIR BAG DEPLOYED. A SMALL PIECE OF METAL LIKE A PENNY OR DIME COULD CAUSE FATAL DAMAGE TO THE PASSENGERS IN THE CAR IF AIR BAG DEPLOYED. NOT SURE IF THIS SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER THE ORIGINAL TAKATA RECALL OR IF ANOTHER RECALL SHOULD BE ISSUED. IN ANY CASE I BELIEVE THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE WHICH SHOULD BE BROUGHT TO YOUR ATTENTION.

Every light on dash lights up when it happens and car dies causing driver to suddenly switch to park, turn key off and try to start car again while stuck in middle of road or traffic.

Transmission will not go into gear. When it finally does shift it jumps completely forward or backwards depending on the gear. However, it does not matter which gear you put it in. It takes several attempts before it does go into gear; at that time it will completely jump forward/backward. This causes great risk to myself and others on the road/parking lots. I never know when it is going to get in gear or if it will go out while driving. The problem has been reported to the Ford company. The vehicle as not been inspected by any manufacture or policy/insurance. There was no warning, or no warning when it happens.

Transmission failed while making a left hand turn. Close call with on coming traffic. Dealer evaluation code P0735. Dealer has stated; transmission cannot be repaired but must be replaced with a new transmission. Cost: $6422.45. Dealer implied faulty transmission and liability issues. Ford refused to acknowledge it would cover the replacement cost. This vehicle has been properly maintained and has only 51,649 miles on the odometer. I have noticed many class action legal complaints on Ford transmissions in the Fusion model.

The potholes on the highway caused my tie rods and tires to explode!

NHTSA ID 11606226 · filed Aug 2, 2024

Buying the 2009 Fusion understanding the power steering was faulty, thinking a good tune up and general fluids replaced would handle the problem. However this was not the case. Fusion needed rack n pinion and power steering pump. I can not drive the vehicle due to this issue(s) Their was a terrible bad accident and the vehicle is now salvaged title. This is now second time rack n pinion out and I will harm others and myself as I can not make turns. I am extremely disappointed with Ford MFG and will seek all monetary claims for not backing up their vehicles. Ashamed and less than is my thoughts on Ford Fusions!

THIS IS MY HUSBAND'S CAR AND WE HAVE BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH ACCELERATION FOR THE PAST FEW MONTHS. WHEN TURNING A CORNER THE CAR WILL STOP ACCELERATING. YESTERDAY I WAS ON ROUTE 295 AROUND PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, FORTUNATELY IN THE RIGHT LANE, WHEN THE CAR DECIDED TO STOP MOVING FORWARD. I WAS ABLE TO PULL INTO THE BREAKDOWN LANE AND AVOID BEING HIT FROM BEHIND. I SHUT THE CAR OFF, RESTARTED IT AND WAS ABLE TO ACCELERATE AND GET BACK ON THE HIGHWAY. THIS IS A SCARY SAFETY ISSUE. I DID RESEARCH ONLINE AND DISCOVERED THAT IT IS THE THROTTLE BODY AND IT WAS NEVER A RECALL. I CALLED MY FORD DEALER AND HE SAID THE CAR, ALTHOUGH IT IS NOT TEN YEARS OLD AND HAS JUST OVER 120,000 ON IT, IS NOT ELIGIBLE FOR A FREE REPAIR. MY DAUGHTER-IN-LAW SOMETIME DRIVES THIS CAR WITH MY 2 YEAR OLD GRANDSON TAKING HIM TO DAY CARE. OBVIOUSLY WE WILL NOT BE DRIVING THIS CAR UNTIL IT IS REPAIRED. WHY HASN'T THIS BEEN A RECALL? IT IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE.
