2002 Ford Windstar Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2002 Ford Windstar, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

ABS AND BRAKE LIGHT COMES ON INTERMITTENTLY. I DO NOT HAVE ABS FUNCTION WHILE THE LIGHTS ARE ON AND IT SEEMS TO HAPPEN MORE OFTEN IN WARMER WEATHER. WHEN VEHICLE IS TURNED OFF IT RESETS AND DOESN'T COME BACK ON UNTIL DRIVEN A FEW MILES AGAIN. ACCORDING TO SEVERAL FORUMS, THIS SEEMS TO BE HAPPENING ON A LARGE AMOUNT OF FORD WINDSTAR'S SIMILAR TO MINE OR ASSEMBLED IN CANADA.

The gauges are acting crazy which causes the engine to jerk or the transmission and then it starts making the lights flicker in the interior and the gauges start sticking. It seems to make the overflow on the radiator to empty more because it is causing the sensors in the electrical for the parts to go crazy and run hot. Sometimes it only does it every so often but after getting the reserve hose on the power steering that connects to the reservoir to the coolant the battery was drained. Then going after getting it charged down the highway it caused the interior lights radio and seat and turn signals not to work when coming to a complete stop and it was idling the dashboard and all the lights were coming back on once given a guess it winded up not working again causing the battery to become hot or warm and acid you can smell in the air like rotten eggs. It is causing the overflow tank of the radiator to evaporate more or come out quicker and it is causing other component parts to react strangely which I'm afraid will cause a fire in the vehicle and the idling is not correct also on it now

TOW TRUCK WAS CALLED, UPON LOADING OF VEHICLE ON BED OF TRUCK WAS ABLE TO SEE REAR AXLE IN THE MIDDLE TOWARD PASSENGER SIDE HAD RUSTED THRU RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF A BRACKET FORD HAD INSTALLED IN 2011 DUE TO A RECALL. WAS INFORMED THAT IN 2015-16 FORD DID ANOTHER RECALL ON THE BRACKET NOT BEING IMPROPERLY INSTALLED. AS SHOWED IN THE ATTACHED PHOTO THERE IS ONLY ONE BRACKET INSTALLED, MY UNDERSTANDING THERE SHOULD BE TWO. BUT EVEN THEN THAT DOES NOT RESOLVED THE RUST PROBLEM, IT JUST HOLDS THE AXLE WHEN IT DOES BREAK OR CORRODE THRU.

Rear Axle . Fell on the highway split in half while I was driving on a state Hwy 71 at 45 mph. Cracked rear axle. 2002 Ford Windstar part of a recall for Rear axle. No warning was given and didn't know about the recall until after it happened. Inspection was preformed by a mechanic. I could have flipped or rolled or caused a major collision as this highway is very heavily traveled.

NHTSA ID 11518183 · filed Apr 21, 2023

The rear axle of my 2002 Ford Windstar completely fractured while traveling on Interstate 75. The rear axle broke while driving about 60 miles per hour on Interstate 75 in Florida. By the grace of GOD my passenger and I survived. In attempting to stop, the van hit the guard rail on the Highway. I was able to keep the van in the right lane. The van gave us NO warning. While waiting for the AAA tow truck, a Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT} patrol vehicle stop to ensure we were alright. The FDOT driver inspected the Windstar, took pictures and stated he has never seen a broken rear axle like that before.

PURCHASED VEHICLE JANUARY 2012, PASSENGER FRONT SEAT BELT LATCH WAS BROKEN, I PURCHASED A NEW ONE FROM DEALER FOR $170.48. MARCH 2012, IT BROKE AGAIN WITH SAME PROBLEM. IT DOES NOT LATCH, OR WHEN IT DOES LATCH, IT OPENS ON ITS OWN WITH OR WITHOUT ANYONE IN THE SEAT. DEALER REFUSES TO WARRANTY THE 3 MONTH OLD LATCH, BUT OFFERED TO ORDER ME ANOTHER FOR $170.48 +LABOR WITHOUT HAVING TO PAY FOR IT FIRST. AFTERMARKET DEALERS SAY ITS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH 2001/2002 WINDSTAR'S AND 2001'S HAD A RECALL ON IT. 27 JUNK YARDS BETWEEN BUFFALO, NY,CLEVELAND, OHIO & PITTSBURG PA ALL HAVE DEFECTIVE SEAT BELT LATCHES IN THEIR 01/02 VANS. SO MY OPTION IS TO EITHER NOT USE THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT OR PAY $233.43 EVERY 3 MONTHS TO HAVE A NEW LATCH ASSEMBLY INSTALLED. I HAVE PAPERWORK FROM CHAMPION FORD, CONFIRMING THAT THE SEAT BELT IS BROKEN DATED 4/6/2013. BUT THE FEMALE SERVICE WRITER CONVENIENTLY LOST MY PAPER WORK FOR THE ORIGINAL SEAT BELT LATCH FROM 2012. ALSO SEARCHING NET BRINGS UP OVER 23,000 REPORTED ISSUES WITH 2002 WINDSTAR SEAT BELTS. WHY HAS THERE BEEN NO RECALL ON THE 2002 WINDSTAR AS THERE WAS WITH THE 2001. ITS NOT FAIR THAT I SHOULD HAVE TO PAY $233.43 EVERY 3 MONTHS TO THE FORD DEALER TO HAVE A WORKING SEAT BELT. CLEARLY THIS IS A SAFETY AND MANUFACTURING DEFECT.. ITS UNREASONABLE TO MAKE ME DECIDE IF I FEEL SAFER HUNCHED OVER IN MY ELECTRIC WHEELCHAIR IN THE REAR OF MY VAN ONLY BELTED INTO THE WHEELCHAIRS SAFETY BELT HAVING TO HOPE THAT IT DOESN'T FLIP OVER SQUISH ME DURING AN ACCIDENT OR IF I WOULD RATHER BE EJECTED THRU THE FRONT WINDSHIELD!! HOW CAN I BE ASKED TO PUT MY LIFE AT RISK EVERY TIME I GET INTO THE VAN!! I ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT SEAT BELTS WERE THE MOST IMPORTANT SAFETY FEATURE IN A VEHICLE. HOW CAN THIS BE ALLOWED TO CONTINUE? THIS IS THE SECOND TIME AND EACH TIME THE AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED THE REPAIR WAS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY BUT THIS TIME THE REPAIR COST MORE THAN $1100. THE FAILURE CAUSED A LOSS OF POWER IN THE CAR AND CAUSED THE ENGINE TO STALL, THE STEERING WAS STIFF AND BRAKES BECAME DIFFICULT DUE TO LOSE OF ENGINE POWER. *JB
