What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2011 GMC Acadia, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
Looses power while driving. Cannot jump the battery it needs to be recharged every time. Power steering stops working while driving( low rpm and when stopped) dangerous for merging or lane changes. Engine shudders when trying to accelerate. TCM/ ECM replaced 2020. Problem still persists. Whining noise upon start of the vehicle. Auto start will not work. traction control light, check engine airbag and
POWER STEERING RACK & HIGH PRESSURE POWER STEERING LINE. IF THIS FAILS WHILE YOU'RE DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY YOU WILL LOSE POWER STEERING CAUSING A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. ALSO THE TIMING COVER IS LEAKING. BOTH OF THESE EXPENSIVE REPAIRS SEEMS TO BE AN ISSUE WITH ALL GMC ACADIA SUV'S YET THE NHTSA HAS NOT INVESTIGATED OR REQUIRED THE MANUFACTURER TO DO A RECALL AND COVER THE COSTS OF REPAIR. COSTS FOR BOTH REPAIRS IS $5000.00 !!!
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
I had issue with the timing chain an have check engine light is on I have heard other people having problems with there timing chain. It starts hard. I've had it looked at multiple times. I feel like this is a safety concern. It has low miles on it
The engine light came on. Had a mobile mechanic look at it, he ran a diagnostics, it showed a P0017 code. He advised to get another opinion on how to repair, as he said it may need a new engine. Took it to a local repair shop, was told the same thing. The Acadia runs fine, and only has 116K miles. The problem is that it will not pass the required emission test for annual registration and tag. The cost of a new engine was estimated at about $10K, which is more than the Acadia is worth. Was told that these vehicles have had a history of this same issue.
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
The relay for the fan at the top of the fuse/relay box on the right side when facing the front of the vehicle. (under the hood) Gets hot and blows the relay and melts the spot where the relay prongs plug in. Causing the need for a new fuse box and circuit problems within the fuse box connectors. The fans, specifically the a/c fan does not kick on when turning on the a/c and the low speed fan does not kick on at all until the secondary temp fan kicks on after the temperature raises past the normal operating range. Which an overheating engine is bad for all parts of the engine which can and sooner or later will lead to a catastrophic failure putting the operator and other motorists life's at risk. This time it created a small fire that was extinguished only because the fuse box cover was off and I was looking at it as it happened, putting the cover back on extinguished the fire. This is the third time it has happened with the exact same problem. You tube is full of videos with the exact same problem.
2011 gmc Acadia slt gear shift does not lock causing it to slip into neutral with slightest bump of shifter or sudden hard breaking Also passenger seat belt does not.lock at all when breaking and driver side seat belt never unlocks there are safty recalls on these issues for this model but.says mine has zero unfixed recall also defrosting and mirror defrost does not work properly causing me to have very bad visibility I had a close call when driving in Houston a week ago when I had to slam breaks due to a crazy driver who did not see me.and cut me off the lane my gear shifted into neutral causing me to not be able to accelerate after breaking to avoid the next speeding car fortunately I was lucky and was able to quickly shift back into drive and go there are electrical issues as well and there has only been one other owner and well maintained so I don't know what to do next my passenger nearly hit dash during this that's when I realized passenger seat belt does not lock
Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.
From owner reports, verbatim
Hi, I think the 2011 Acadia Denali should be in the recall along with the Terrain. The reason being that I always get flashed at night and every night as though I have the high lights on which I don’t. That’s every night. Please check into this. With all this road rage going on I worry I might come across one angry person or cause someone to wreck. Please I’m worried. Thank you.

Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
THIS ALL BEGAN AT ABOUT 75000 MILES. IT FIRST STARTED WITH THE STABILIZATION/TRACTION LIGHT COMING ON WHILE DRIVING ONCE THIS HAPPENED YOU COULD NOT ACCELERATE THE CAR. I ONCE WAS ON A HIGHWAY IN THE MIDDLE LANE WHEN IT HAPPENED I COULD NOT ACCELERATE AND HAD TO TRY TO GET OVER TO THE BREAK DOWN LANE. THIS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES BUT THEN TURNED INTO A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT PROBLEM. WHILE DRIVING THE BATTERY WOULD START TO DIE WITH NO WARNING. WHEN THIS HAPPENS YOU CAN NOT JUMP THE CAR YOU HAVE TO BRING THE BATTERY TO BE CHARGED ON A CHARGER. ALTHOUGH THE CAR WON'T START THE OTHER THINGS LIKE LIGHTS, RADIO, ETC WILL STILL WORK. THIS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES BUT ONCE THE WEATHER WAS WARM IT RAN PERFECT FOR 4 MONTHS. THE FIRST DAY IT WAS EXTREMELY COLD THE BATTERY DIED WHILE DRIVING. I ALSO HAD A HEADLIGHT GO OUT ON THE DRIVERS SIDE AND ABOUT 3 WEEKS LATER IT CAME BACK ON AND STAYED ON. I HAVE BROUGHT IT TO SEVERAL PLACES BUT NOBODY HAS BEEN ABLE TO FIGURE OUT THE PROBLEM. I CAN'T KEEP SPENDING MONEY TO GET IT DIAGNOSED WITH NO RESULTS. AFTER RESEARCHING ONLINE IT SEEMS TO BE A VERY COMMON PROBLEM IN THE ACADIA.
IT STALLS WHILE DRIVING. LOOSES POWER, MAX SPEED 20MPH. WON'T START.
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
My air bag light keeps coming on saying to service it. I saw the recalled issues before with the other Acadias and was thinking maybe my year model would need to be looked into as well. I haven't ever had a wreck for them to come out but the light comes on frequently.
I had a collision with a deer and my airbags did not deploy
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
ENGINE TIMING CHAIN NEED TO BE REPLACED PREMATURELY. GM APPEARS TO BE AVOIDING THE ISSUE FOR SPECIFIC MODEL YEAR
I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE ABOUT A YEAR AND A HALF AGO AND HAVE BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS STARTING THE CAR EVERY TIME THAT I PUT GAS. THE DEALERSHIP THAT I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE FROM STATED THAT THE VEHICLE ONLY HAD ONE PREVIOUS OWNER BUT REFUSED TO GIVE ME A CARFAX REPORT. THEY STATED THAT THEY DID A FULL VEHICLE INSPECTION, AND STATED THERE WERE NO DEFECTS, BUT NO INSPECTION REPORT WAS IN THE CAR WHAT SO EVER. I AM READY TO FILE AN ARBITRATION COMPLAINT IF THIS SITUATION DOESN'T GET RESOLVED BECAUSE I AM STILL MAKING MONTHLY PAYMENTS ON THE LOAN.
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
Upon starting our vehicle to leave the breaks were very hard to compress. They did eventually release but made a whooshing noise as though there is someone blowing air from the brake pedal. There is no damage or leaking from the break line or the master cylinder. This could lead to failure of the breaks and it is concerning. This vehicle is available upon request to inspect. This has not currently be confirmed by a dealer or service center, or others that would inspect vechicles. There are no warning laps or messages presenting. 11/23/21 is the first day that this occured.
STABILITRAK ALWAYS REPORTS OFF AND BRAKE WARNING ALWAYS DISPLAYS ON DASHBOARD, WHILE ON OR RUNNING. HAD IT LOOKED AT BY 4 MECHANICS. BREAKS ARE FINE. ENGINE WONT START AFTER EVERYTIME I PUMP GAS. I HAVE TO PUMP ACCELERATOR SEVRAL TIMES FOR ENGINE TO START. HAD IT LOOKED AT AGAIN. PROBLEM IS ONGOING. ALSO, SLOWED DOWN ON ONE OCCASION WHILE DRIVING ON THE HWY. HAD TO PULL OVER SINCE ACCELERATOR WOULD NOT FUNCTION. AFTER 30MINS OR SO. WAS ABLE TO RESTART.
Visibility
Reports naming windshields, glass, wipers, defrosters and mirrors.
From owner reports, verbatim
MY CAR HAS TROUBLE STARTING OFTEN SOMETIT TAKES ALMOST AN HOUR TO GET IT STARTED JUMP STARTING IT DOES NOTHING BATTERY TESTED GOOD ONLY A CLICK AS IF BATTERY IS DEAD BUT STILL NOTHING
WINDSHIELD WIPERS WON'T WORK

The contact owns a 2011 GMC Acadia. The contact stated that while driving 60 MPH, the subframe underneath the driver’s side felt loose and not properly aligned. The contact merged to the right lane and continued to drive the vehicle. The contact stated that her son and daughter drove the vehicle and noticed the failure as well. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to a local Pep Boys who replaced all four tires and performed a 4-wheel alignment; however, the failure had been reoccurring and was more noticeable while making turns and driving around curves. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The approximate failure mileage was unknown.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 GMC ACADIA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V415000 (STRUCTURE) AT ED BOZARTH CHEVROLET #1 BUICK GMC CADILLAC (3731 SW TOPEKA BLVD, TOPEKA, KS 66609) IN 2016. THE CONTACT STATED THAT RECENTLY THE BOLT THAT CONNECTED THE TRUNK SHOCK TO THE LIFTGATE FRACTURED AND DETACHED UPON OPENING THE LIFTGATE. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE SAME DEALER TO RETRIEVE A REPLACEMENT BOLT. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE PART WOULD TAKE A FEW DAYS TO ARRIVE. SEAT BELT LATCH CABLE FOR MIDDLE ROW DRIVERS SIDE SEAT FAILS. CABLE SEEMS TO BE STRETCHING OUT ON REGULAR BASIS. THIS IS GOING TO BE THE 2ND CABLE REPLACEMENT SINCE PURCHASING THE VEHICLE IN AUGUST 2010. HAD CABLE REPLACED IN JULY 2013 AND USED MIDDLE ROW SEAT APPROXIMATELY 6 TIMES SINCE THEN BUT CABLE STRETCHED AND LATCH FAILED AGAIN. THIS FAILURE COULD RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY IN THE CASE OF A HEAD ON COLLISION AS PASSENGERS IN DRIVERS SIDE MIDDLE ROW SEAT COULD BE HURLED FORWARD IF SEAT IS NOT LATCHED APPROPRIATELY. *TR
WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, MY SIX YEAR OLD DAUGHTER EXCLAIMED THAT HER HEAD WAS "TOUCHING THE FRONT SEAT" AND HER "FEET WERE ON THE FLOOR". WHEN I (THE DRIVER) LOOKED BACK, I SAW THAT HER SEAT HAD DISLODGED AND EJECTED HER INTO AN UPRIGHT POSITION. THIS CAUSED HER HEAD/FACE TO BE HITTING THE SEAT IN FRONT OF HER AND HER FEET TO BE ON THE FLOOR OF THE CAR. I HAD TO IMMEDIATELY PULL OVER ON THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY. I OBSERVED THAT THE SEAT (CUSHION PART - NOT THE BACK) HAD POPPED UP CAUSING MY DAUGHTER AND HER CARSEAT TO POP UP AS WELL. I COULD SEE UNDER THE SEAT AS I WAS TRYING TO POSITION THE SEAT INTO PLACE. I NOTED SEVERE RUSTING ON THE METAL SEAT TRACK/FRAME WHICH APPEARED TO BE THE CAUSE FOR THE SEAT TO UNHINGE OR UNLOCK. IT TOOK SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO LOCK THE SEAT BACK INTO PLACE. THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN AND MY DAUGHTER COULD HAVE BEEN SEVERELY INJURED, IF NOT DIED IF THE CAR HAD BEEN IN A CRASH. THE CAR SEAT EJECTED FROM SIMPLE DRIVING. THIS COULD HAVE HAD A TRAGIC ENDING. *TR

AS I WAS APPROACHING A RED LIGHT, I PRESSED ON MY BREAKS AND HEARD A GRINDING NOISE COMING FROM THE DRIVER SIDE FRONT TIRE. MY CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE MUCH, I PUSHED ON THE BRAKES AND THEN THE GAS AND STARTED TO MOVE. AS I WAS DRIVING I FELT THE CAR PULLING. I NOTICED THE ABS TRACTION CONTROL OFF, ALL WHEEL DRIVE OFF, AND STABILITRACK LIGHTS ALL CAME ON. I CALLED THE LOCAL GMC DEALERSHIP SERVICE CENTER. NOW JUST WAITING TO HEAR BACK FROM THEM.
GOODYEAR EAGLE RS-A TIRES UNDER 6 MONTHS OLD BURST FROM SIDEWALL. THE FIRST TIRE HAD A SLOW SIDE WALL LEAK THAT MAY HAVE INITIATED WHILE DRIVING ON LOCAL ROADS. THE SECOND TIRE SPONTANEOUSLY BURST AT THE SIDEWALL WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT A SPEED IN EXCESS OF 65 MPH. THE HOLE WAS LARGE ENOUGH FOR ROADSIDE TO PUT HIS FINGER THROUGH. NO TIRE PRESSURE SENSORS NOTED AN ISSUE PRIOR TO BOTH EVENTS.
