2017 GMC Acadia Airbags Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the airbag system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Airbags reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

GMC has been unresponsive in servicing the recall for this vehicle as of 10/08/2024. Local dealers indicate they are waiting for parts - related airbags for servicing the recall. As a result, the car is not able to be sold for a fair market value. It is a 2017 model and we are being impacted financially by the issues with this recall and parts that are still unavailable.

A recall was issued for my car in May ‘23. I have called our local GMC dealer and they explain they do not have the parts. I called GMC recall dept and they say that they are trying to get the parts. But they do not give a timeline at all. This is very frustrating. GMC doesn’t seem to care enough about their customers.

Bought vehicle used/as is from dealer about a month after air bag recall announced in 2023. Found out it is apparently illegal to sell a vehicle with an open recall. Dealer did not disclose the recall and I did not research unfortunately. It's been over a year now since air bag was recalled and still no fix and I live in a very hot state. Should never take this long to fix something so dangerous - FATAL. Lives are possibly at stake!!! Also had to replace temp sensor which cost about $1,000. A/C wasn't working properly. Mechanic said they had to replace the temp sensor. Research shows this is a known issue. Also have had to replace O2 sensors and might have catalytic convertor issue.

I have been waiting over a year to get my recall airbag fixed. I was sold a defective car and would hope that it would get fixed ASAP especially knowing that if I am in an accident, I could get killed or anyone else in my car could. This is unacceptable. I received a recall letter in May 2023 and today at the emissions testing was told to go get it fixed. I looked up what to do in the GMC website and they make it sound like I just call the dealership and they will fix it. That is not true, I was told there is no solution. I am driving a car that could kill me or any passenger in my car and have been for over a year. I called my dealership, GMC corporate and was told by both of them they would let me know when a part would be available but as of right now there is nothing. I believe it is negligent to have a recall that could cause death and it take this long. It’s not like a little light bulb that is broken. I am very upset and nervous to drive my car knowing the tragedy it could cause.

I was notified of the air bag recall in June 2023, and no action has been taken on this problem yet. My concern is, of course, if I'm an accident and the air bag deploys and metal is scattered thru out the inside of the car the end result will be disastrous to whom ever is inside my car.

GM has had a pending recall for a couple of months minimum on this vehicle for a critical safety component, the airbags. I have a young child and this is our families only car so they should be fixing this immediately. I have had this same recall done on cars I owned in the past (Honda) and it has never taken this long or been an issue.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers.
