2014 GMC Sierra 1500 Suspension Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the suspension system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Suspension reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

The contact owns a 2014 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while driving approximately 45 MPH, the vehicle drove over a slight bump in the road. The contact stated that the vehicle bounced, and then there was an abnormal banging sound coming from the rear of the vehicle. The contact recently had work completed on the exhaust system. The contact took the vehicle back to the independent mechanic who had performed the exhaust repair. The mechanic raised the vehicle on the lift and became aware that the rear passenger’s and driver's side cross members, supports for the shock absorbers, and the rear sub frame had extensive corrosion. The contact was advised by the mechanic that the banging sound was coming from the shock absorbers striking the bed of the truck while driving over the bump in the roadway. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 78,569.

The contact owns a 2014 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle was veering to the right or to the left and was moving upwards and downwards. Additionally, the contact stated that the vehicle was veering excessively to the left or to the right while turning. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where the front brakes were replaced, and the contact was informed that the sway bar end links were fractured due to rust. The contact stated that upon inspecting underneath the vehicle, the lower parts of the links had detached, and one of the links was flapping. The contact purchased new parts from the dealer, and the mechanic replaced the links. Additionally, the contact stated that the vehicle was experiencing hard shifts while driving from a complete stop and while coming to a stop. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 67,000.

Within the first week of buying my 2014 GMC 1500 SIERRA, the transmission fluid was black in griddy. I have had it flushed, then filter changed and new fluid put in within 2 week time frame. A week later had to put a new transmission in it. It barely would drive. So a purchase at 2,999 then to a transmission 4,800 and new control arm with ball joint with new axels. They were busted. Another 2,000. Its sicking. Advice

I have a 2014 Silverado high-country. The truck has approximately 110k miles. I was told by chevy the frame is rusted through and unsafe to work on. They know these trucks had problems with the rust coating and only put out a bulletin to have them recoated. The problem is rust is rust. Once the metal was exposed there is no going back. My truck would other wise last another 50-70k miles.

Electrical glitches happen at both, low speeds and while on the roadway. My steering wheel tightens up and I get a message on the dashboard “Stabilitrak” and another one “assisted steering reduced, drive with care”. My vehicle even shut off on me after pulling in to a parking space after turning steering wheel completely to one side

Cross frame member ahead of rear wheels has rotted and failed. It is located behind the cab and is the cross frame that holds up gas tank and forms the anchor point for the rear shock absorbers. I have been told by dealer that truck is not safe to drive. It is now at a body shop. The suspension is compromised, gas tank could fall, and drivability safety is affected. Truck is only 8 years old, the cross member is not visible to consumer, there has been no undue use or environmental conditions to cause the rot and failure of the component. Further, the manufacturer does not sell a replacement part, so the entire frame of the truck would need to be replaced.

THERE IS A SERVICE BULLETIN FROM GM ABOUT FRAME RUST ON ALL GMC 2014 1500 SIERRA AND CHEVY 2014 SILVERADO 1500 LIGHT DUTY PICK UP TRUCKS. THE FRAMES AND SOME IMPORTANT BOLTS ARE HIGHLY RUSTED. THEY ONLY TOUCH-UP SPOTS THEY CAN ACCESS AT THE DEALERSHIP. THE FACILITY WHERE THEY WERE PRODUCED USED A POOR QUALITY WAXY PAINT COATING. THE DEALERSHIP CANNOT GUARANTEE A COMPLETE SOLUTION FOR THIS FRAME RUST. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM IN THE FUTURE OF THE LIFE OF THE TRUCK. THE FRAME COULD DECAY AND THE BOLTS CAN BREAK OFF. THIS IS NOT FAIR FOR A $40,000 TO $60,000 TRUCK. YOU CAN SPOT THE RUST RIGHT FROM THE DEALERSHIP NEW TRUCK LOT. I READ ON THE GM TRUCK FORUM ON THE INTERNET HUNDREDS IF NOT THOUSANDS OF THESE TRUCKS HAVE THIS ISSUE. I WILL FEEL VERY UNSAFE DRIVING THIS TRUCK A FEW YEARS FROM NOW. THERE ARE SOME PHOTOS OF A FEW RUSTED AREAS IN THE GM SERVICE BULLETIN WHICH YOU OBTAIN.

TRUCK VIBRATED NEW WITH 8 MILES WHEN WE FIRST DROVE IT HOME. PINPOINTED SPECIFIC SPEEDS AND RETURNED 9+ TIMES TO DEALERSHIP OVER 7 MONTHS. TIRES (TWICE), SHOCKS AND REAR END WERE ALL REPLACED BUT DID NOT STOP VIBRATION. 5 MONTHS FROM PURCHASE WE WERE FOLLOWED BY A NEIGHBOR AND THEY SAW MY TRUCK "DOG TRACKING" (TRAVELING SIDEWAYS DOWN THE ROAD). DEALER NOTED BUT WOULD NOT FOLLOW AT DISTANCE AND SPEED REQUIRED TO WITNESS THE "DOG TRACKING". DEALER TOLD ME THEY WERE CLUELESS AND COME GET THE TRUCK. LOCAL AUTO REPAIR SHOP FOLLOWED ME AND SAID THERE IS DEFINITELY A PROBLEM. FRONT CENTER OF WHEEL TO BACK CENTER OF WHEEL MEASURES 1/2 INCH LESS ON DRIVER SIDE THAN PASSENGER SIDE BUT DEALER SAYS THAT IS NOT A GOOD MEASUREMENT BECAUSE THEIR COMPUTER SAYS EVERYTHING IS FINE. THIS TRUCK VIBRATES AND "DOG TRACKS" AND DEALERSHIP REFUSES TO MAKE PROPER OFFER AND HAS GIVEN UP ON REPAIR ATTEMPTS. I AM PRESENTLY SEEKING HELP FROM A DIFFERENT DEALER.

I HAVE A 2014 GMC SIERRA, I TOOK MY TRUCK IN TO GET IT SERVICED, 2 WEEKS AGO. AT THE TIME, WHEN I WAS REVERSING YOU COULD HEAR A CLICKING NOISE, WHEN I WOULD BACK UP, OR BRAKE, ALSO GOING OVER ANY BUMP IN THE ROAD, AT VERY LOW SPEEDS, ( EXM. 5 MPH TO 15 MPH), WELL, THE DEALER CAME BACK AND TOLD ME, MY BREAK BOOSTER HAD TO BE REPLACED, AND THEY LUBED AND CLEANED MY U-JOINTS AND LEAD SPRINGS ON THE REAR END. WELL HERE IT IS 2 WEEKS LATER AND THE PROBLEM CAME BACK, AND I CALLED THE DEALER, AND THE RESPONSE I GOT, " JUST BRING IT BACK IN, AND THE ONLY THING WE CAN DO IT RE-LUBE AND RE-CLEAN IT, BUT THAT'S ALL WE CAN DO FOR YOU". MY HUSBAND OWNS A 2013 SIERRA, AND HE HAS HAD NO, ISSUES WITH HIS TRUCK WHAT SO EVER. THIS IS MY 3RD VEHICLE FROM GMC, I HAVE BEEN SATISFIED UP UNTIL NOW, THERE IS A SERIOUS ISSUE YOU NEED TO LOOK INTO. THE TRUCK DRIVES FINE, BUT, WITH THIS BEING A NEW TRUCK, THIS NOISE SHOULD NOT BE THERE, I AM CONSIDERING TRADING IT IN AND GOING ELSEWHERE FOR THE MONEY I AM PAYING ON IT. *TR
