2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Body & structure Problems

The hood molding flew off my vehicle as I was traveling down the interstate. I did not hit anything, it just randomly flew off of my vehicle. The piece flew off and just barely missed the vehcile behind me. If that would of hit the other vehicle, it would of caused damage to their vehicle, and potentially could of caused an accident. The piece that fell off was the trim piece that is diretly below the hood latch and above the front grille. There was no incidcators that this was going to happen. I see there was a recall on the same model and year vehicle as mine but for chrome grilles. The recall # is 25V-060.

I request that GM and NHTSA investigate whether recall N242490120 / NHTSA recall 25V060 was properly performed and effective, determine why the deflector detached, and assess whether improper installation, defective parts, inadequate fastening, impact, road debris, or another cause was responsible. Evidence and Records Requested Please review or provide: • Complete recall-repair records, including repair orders, technician notes, procedures, parts and fastening specifications, photographs, repair date and mileage, personnel identities, and attachment-point inspections. • An explanation for the discrepancy between the April 18, 2025 myGMC date and April 28, 2025 GM VIN-lookup date. • Dealership inspection findings, photographs, measurements, and conclusions. • GM repair instructions, technical guidance, recall-validation records, and engineering analyses. • A written determination of the probable cause and whether this was a remedy failure, improper installation, defective part, unrelated damage, or unresolved cause. • Criteria for determining whether the grille must be replaced or repaired. • Warranty, goodwill, claim, technical-assistance, and customer-service records. • Similar complaints, warranty claims, field reports, damage reports, and recurrence data. Corrective Actions Requested I request that GM identify the cause, determine whether the grille must be replaced, and assess whether the attachment can be repaired. If the incident resulted from the recall condition, repair, improper installation, defective parts, or failure of the remedy, I request no-cost repair or reimbursement, including grille replacement. If GM attributes the incident to unrelated damage or an external event, I request the supporting evidence and technical basis. I request that NHTSA determine whether additional oversight or corrective action is warranted to prevent recurrence and road-debris hazards.

My 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 was subject to GM safety recall N242490120 / NHTSA 25V060 for an upper grille deflector that could detach from the vehicle. The recall repair was completed by my GM dealership in June 2025. In late August 2026, while driving normally on the highway, the same upper grille deflector detached again in the exact manner described by the recall. There was no collision, impact, or other outside damage that caused the failure. I was able to retain the detached deflector due to my attentiveness however, it was close to detaching and either busting mine or someone else’s windshield. Upon inspection, the adhesive and retainers from the previous recall repair are still clearly visible, and the bonding appears to have separated. I have photographs documenting the failed attachment points and still possess the undamaged detached component for inspection. My GM dealership inspected the vehicle after this failure and determined that the front grille assembly should be replaced. However, because the recall is shown as previously completed, GM has stated that the recall cannot be reopened. GM Customer Assistance offered only $251 toward a $1,673.82 repair, leaving me responsible for $1,422.82 to correct the same safety defect that the recall was intended to remedy. I am filing this complaint because the recall remedy appears to have failed, allowing the recalled component to detach from the vehicle again. A grille component detaching at highway speed could strike another vehicle or create a roadway hazard. I am concerned that other vehicles repaired under this recall may experience the same post-recall failure. I request that NHTSA review the effectiveness and durability of the remedy used for recall N242490120 / 25V060.

On August 22, 2026, while driving my 2022 GMC Sierra westbound on State Route 84 at highway speed, with strong westerly winds of approximately 35 knots, the front passenger-side wheel-opening molding/fender flare completely detached from the vehicle without warning. The detached molding struck the passenger-side exterior mirror and narrowly missed a motorcyclist traveling behind me. This created a serious safety risk because a substantial exterior component became a projectile at highway speed and could have struck the motorcyclist or another vehicle. There were no warning lights, messages, unusual noises, or other symptoms before the failure, and there was no known collision or impact preceding the incident. I did not initially know what had detached. After arriving home and inspecting the vehicle, I discovered the entire passenger-side front wheel-opening molding was missing. The detached component was not recovered. I reported the incident to my GMC dealer, which performs my regular service and warranty work. The vehicle was inspected on August 31, 2026. The dealer declined warranty coverage but, to my knowledge, did not determine why the component detached. Afterward, I inspected the corresponding driver's-side molding and found a substantial visible gap at its leading edge between the molding and vehicle body. Comparison with other GMC Sierra vehicles of the same model showed their moldings appeared to sit substantially more flush. The vehicle and remaining molding are available for inspection, and I have photographs documenting the condition. The cause of the failure is currently UNKNOWN. I have escalated the incident to GMC Customer Assistance under Case #109189284 and requested a product-safety review. I am concerned there may be an installation, attachment, or component-retention issue that could allow these moldings to detach while driving.

My truck was serviced for the front chrome grill separation recall last year. On Saturday, 8/1/2026 while driving at highway speed the grill deflector separated from the vehicle violently. I was able to pull off of the highway and remove the part as only the passenger corner clip (with screw) was partially retaining the deflector. Upon looking at the "repair" or recall, the corrective action does not appear to have been done correctly per N242490120. The chrome coating was not scuffed let alone removed from the part and an insufficient amount of epoxy was used to attach this deflector. Damage was done to the hood and lower grill during this incident. I have had numerous and considerable issues with the purchasing/servicing dealership where I bought this truck.

On July 3,2026 I was driving my 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 on the highway at a speed of 70mph when the front chrome deflector flew off my vehicle. It tore paint off the hood, and also cracked my windshield. I searched online and noticed this had a safety recall for this issue. I see the recall was done in January 2026, AND has failed completely. I still have the service records of previous repair. GM is giving me issues on finding a remedy to fix this.

Bezel flew off on highway. Subsequently, dealer service had to replace both the bezel and grill bc of how it was attached. For some reason the vin was not included in a recall of 70K trucks that were same year make and model as mine. I would like to be included in the recall.

On 05/30/26, During normal operation of my vehicle (2022 GMC Sierra Elevation) at about 50MPH the Upper Grille Molding became detached while on the Highway. The safety of other cars or motorcycles was placed at risk because the part could have impaled or impacted myself through a windshield or someone driving behind me. The problem has been known to exist in other similar models and an existing recall does exist for those models (N242490120 Chrome Grille Deflector May Detach). On 06/01/26 the vehicle was taken to a Kelly Buick GMC, INC where it was assessed. According to the representative, even though I have not been the only one to report the problem with a different model than that specified on the recall number, they refused to cover the cost of repairs because my VIN does not fall into the recall specifications. Absolutely no other symptoms were noted prior to the part failure no rattling, whistling or any visible signs.

The front grille deflector on my GMC Sierra flew off my truck on a windy day, hit my windshield hard but luckily did not crack it. A vehicle behind me did swerve out of the way to avoid the flying grille deflector but no accident luckily occurred. The piece is damaged but I was able to recover it. I had called the dealership I bought this vehicle at ( around June of 2025) they had confirmed this recall was “fixed” a few months prior to my purchase of the vehicle. Question from me would be, would my local certified GM dealership be able to provide this recall fix? I do not necessarily like the idea of taking back a potential highway safety hazard 2 hours away from my home on the interstate 70 mph back home once this is fixed / repaired with glue/ epoxy that may need 24-48 hours of drying time to cure. Also how can I trust the dealership who “fixed” this issue for it not to happen again?

I had the recall performed to reinforce the upper grille deflector on my truck because there was risk of it flying off at highway speeds. Last week driving down the highway my grille deflector flew off and had the car behind me not swerved, they would have been struck by it. I have an appointment at my dealership tomorrow.

Front chrome hood deflector detached while driving down the interstate. Had a recall on the deflector, recall was performed and the chrome deflector still detached. Tried to get GM to repair and they declined my recall claim. GM stated my 3 year bumper to bumper warranty had expired and they did not have to fix it. The front upper grille molding/deflector located above the front grille and directly below the hood on my 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 has become loose and is separating from the vehicle. The left side attachment points appear to have failed, allowing the plastic component to visibly move and lift while driving at highway speeds. The condition worsens with airflow, and the part vibrates and flexes significantly while traveling on the freeway. This creates a safety concern because the component appears at risk of detaching completely from the vehicle and becoming roadway debris, potentially striking other vehicles or causing drivers to take evasive action. No warning lights or dashboard messages were present prior to discovering the issue. The problem was first noticed after observing movement of the grille trim while driving at normal highway speeds. The vehicle has not been involved in any collision or modification that would cause this condition. A GMC dealer inspected the concern and confirmed the vehicle is not currently included in an active recall despite an existing GMC recall addressing grille deflector detachment on similar 2022 Sierra 1500 vehicles. The defective component is currently still installed on the vehicle and available for inspection upon request. Due to the risk of detachment while driving, vehicle operation at highway speeds now presents a potential hazard to surrounding traffic.

I was driving on the interstate when the hood deflector blew off suddenly and unexpectedly damaging my hood and hitting the windshield. This vehicle was recalled for this part defect last year and the fix was applied by the dealer. It appears that some sort of adhesive was applied to the retainers but they still ultimately failed. This was a very dangerous situation that could have ultimately caused an accident. I am reporting this so that the approved repair can be reviewed. This part should have been replaced, not simply placing adhesive on the defective part. The past safety recall # was N242490120.
