Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

I was driving to work on 7/20/26 and my vehicle loss engine propulsion , engine failure and unable to restart vehicle and shift gears.

NHTSA ID 11755472 · filed Aug 7, 2026

I Purchased the vehicle on May 29, 2026 and it stated the 6.2 liter engine recall had been fixed and that I have extended special coverage for the exact issue of the recall until 150008 miles on this vehicle. On July 14, 2026 the vehicle was being driven and stalled out at a traffic light and restarted, yet within a quarter mile it stalled again at the next traffic light and became completely disabled, it would not even allow a shift into nuetral, so I had it towed less than 100 feet into the Walmart on Loudon Road in Concord, NH 03301 parking lot. On July 23, 2026 I was able to get the batter charged and attach a code scanner which showed one code (P0016). Pursuant to Recall N252494001 (which had allegedly been repaired, likely with the bandaid fix of thicker oil) any 6.2 liter GM truck with the loss of propulsion needs to be plugged into a scanner and if code P0016 is present, engine replacement is needed. Specifically noted to the recall is Special coverage N252494003 which provides the coverage to 150,008 miles on this vehicle is directly related to the recall. At the time of loss of propulsion the vehicle had 99,195 miles present on the odometer. The following day July 24, 2026 I had the vehicle towed to Banks Chevrolet GMC in Concord NH, after the vehicle arrived, I spoke with the service department, provided them with the recall paperwork and printout of the special coverage uner the vin as well as a photo of the odometer and my scanner displayining one code P0016. They then informed me it would take them until August 24, 2026 to "diagnose" the vehicle. The recall is clear it just needs a code scan if disabled. I have contacted GM and informed them of the need for a loaner as the vehicle is a vehicle utilized for business. I have since been told they will try to look at it earlier and no loaner will be offered but I "may" be able to be reimbusred $44.00 a day for a rental. There are no rentals for that price that can tow over 9500 pounds. It is unnacceptable.

The failure to have proper viscosity oil along with manufacturing error resulting in failure of lifters, cam shaft, and crank shaft all needing replaced. Repair totaled over $10,000

NHTSA ID 11755433 · filed Aug 7, 2026

While driving my 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 (VIN: [XXX]) in active traffic, the 10-speed automatic transmission suffered a sudden and catastrophic internal failure. Without warning, the vehicle stalled in the middle of traffic and forced itself into a hazardous "limp mode," severely restricting my speed and acceleration. This created an immediate, high-risk safety emergency, leaving my passengers and me vulnerable to a rear-end collision before we could navigate out of the live roadway. The vehicle was towed to an independent facility (Kenny's Transmission, Repair Order #XXX) at 65,579 miles. Diagnostic troubleshooting confirmed a "Number 6 Solenoid Code" and "Internal Transmission Mechanical Failure" (3-4 races away, total loss of reverse gear), requiring a complete replacement of the transmission assembly utilizing an official GM service part at a personal cost of $6,673.10. General Motors has previously acknowledged 10-speed transmission control valve defects and wheel-lockup hazards by issuing safety recalls for diesel variants, but gas-powered models like my 6.2L L87 engine are experiencing identical, highly dangerous sudden losses of motive power without federal recall protection. I am requesting that the NHTSA investigate this systemic failure rate on 2022 gas models before it causes a major collision. My truck was serviced for the front chrome grill separation recall last year. On Saturday, 8/1/2026 while driving at highway speed the grill deflector separated from the vehicle violently. I was able to pull off of the highway and remove the part as only the passenger corner clip (with screw) was partially retaining the deflector. Upon looking at the "repair" or recall, the corrective action does not appear to have been done correctly per N242490120. The chrome coating was not scuffed let alone removed from the part and an insufficient amount of epoxy was used to attach this deflector. Damage was done to the hood and lower grill during this incident. I have had numerous and considerable issues with the purchasing/servicing dealership where I bought this truck.

My truck is intermittently having the camera display a warning code. While in reverse or while towing and trying to use the surrounding cameras. It happens randomly and almost caused accidents in parking lots. While towing I use it for lane changes and with non towing mirrors it’s a very dangerous issue that could cause an accident especially on the highway

I was driving at 45 mph and all of a sudden the screens went black as if the truck was turned off and the first thing I did was turn on the hazards because I didn’t know if the engine shut off either there was on coming traffic from both my front and back so I was scared my truck shut off 5-7 seconds later the screens turned back on and everything went back to normal but I was scared that my truck just turned off I made the dealership aware of this issue as soon as I pulled over and they said they had a busy schedule and that they would try to have a manager reach out to me to “squeeze me in” Mind you I just got my truck back from the dealership due to electrical issues and service yesterday and not even 24 hours later this happened so I am upset.

NHTSA ID 11755472 · filed Aug 7, 2026

Current Unsafe Conditions: Post-Replacement Active Safety Failures. The vehicle presently exhibits two distinct categories of active, ongoing, and dangerous safety failures, both of which were introduced as a direct result of the engine replacement performed by Monument Chevrolet: (a) Severe Drivability Failure. Between approximately 1,500 and 5,000 RPM, the engine repeatedly and without warning lunges forward, drops all power, and lunges again — cycling in this manner between three (3) and six (6) times before stabilizing. This behavior occurs across all gears and driving conditions, which creates a severe and unpredictable hazard particularly when merging into traffic or accelerating onto highways. This failure constitutes an immediate and ongoing risk to the safety of myself and other motorists. (b) Complete ADAS System Failure. The frontal crash response warning light is permanently illuminated on the instrument cluster, rendering the following federally relevant safety systems entirely non-functional: (i) Automatic Emergency Braking / Forward Collision Alert; (ii) Cruise Control; and (iii) Lane Change Assist / Lane Control System. All of these systems were fully operational and properly functioning before the vehicle was submitted for the engine swap. Their failure is an assembly defect introduced by Monument Chevrolet during the course of the repair and constitutes a warranty and safety defect for which General Motors, as the manufacturer and warrantor, bears full responsibility. Medical Hardship and Urgency. This vehicle is my sole personal transportation. It is essential for travel to active medical appointments and upcoming medical procedures. The ongoing failure of General Motors and its authorized service network to restore this vehicle to a safe and fully operable condition has created a serious hardship that directly affects my ability to access needed medical care. Yes, it was driven by a service department supervisor. He did experience the issues.

Truck did not stop when applying brakes. Message displayed brake system failure and the breaks were spongy. The truck was towed to the dealer and required the master cylinder, gasket, and reservoir to be replaced with 23,403 miles. This appears to be an ongoing issue with GMC Sierra trucks and needs further investigation as this potential could be catastrophic. Also, as this appears to be an ongoing issue, owners should not be responsible for the cost associated with any repairs and should require an immediate recall.

While driving enroute to a concert in [XXX]., in the passing lane on [XXX] around [XXX] & just before exit 22(mile marker 21) during rush hour on 7-23 at 5.09pm, my truck abruptly lost power and shut off! It would not start, I could not engage "N" from "P" to attempt to push my truck to the far left side of the highway. This was a "VERY DANGEROUS" situation as I could have been rear ended or much worse! I immediately called SOS/ON STAR for assistance. In the meantime, a police officer and state troopers showed up to divert the traffic around my truck. Eventually, a "HERO" vehicle showed up and at the direction of the police, my truck was "DRAGGED" from the passing lane to the emergency lane. As for getting a tow truck, 1 finally showed up after 5+ hours. I found out the you all have a contract with "AAA", which is the worse when it comes to getting any assistance. I was towed back to [XXX] to South Town GMC dealership & arrived at 11.25pm. It was only the next morning that I received an email from OnStar dated 7-23 at 5.07pm, with an "Advance Diagnostics" advising of a critical issue with the engine & transmission. The code was: P129F, which is the fuel pump and/or module. My truck now sits at the dealership with a dead battery, waiting for them to address. I have heard that there are issues and recalls in certain vehicles with this similar issue. I do have "extended warranty" protection thru Ally that I bought. However, the shock is finding out that the only way to get it into "N" is a special dealer tool that goes into the transmission under my truck! Are you SERIOUS??????? To have no ability to put my truck into "N" is not only unacceptable, but extremely dangerous. Especially with what happened to me & my family. At this point, I am at the mercy of my dealership to find the time to address this issue. Until then, I have no transportation & very upset with the stress of all that happened! This is separate for VIN [XXX] I had to change dealerships because Beck & Masten South / GMC would NOT provide me with a loaner after being told I was on the list and I was next in line. I waited a month and drove to them and spoke with the girl who oversaw loaners. I explained I had severe safety issues such as front-end wobble which is related to transmission issues. And the oil consumption issue and oil light. Once again, I was re-assured the loaner program was indeed still active and I would be put on priority. Again to no avail I had wasted too much time with Beck & Masten. After months of this I found out I did not have to take it to the dealer I bought it from. So, I took it to Monument Chevrolet. I explained my concerns related to the front-end wobble which was very intermittent. And the oil consumption issue which I was very concerned with due to the year model and mileage of the truck. Also, the 75,000.00 price tag was really has me extremely upset... Monument Chevrolet treated me well. I had actually brought it in and called about the steering which was greatly affected by the severe front end wobble more than one time. I was told at first the oil consumption was pretty normal. Until I told them how much I had to add between changes. I have attached two work orders to this complaint. These work orders show what was done at 18017 miles and 18323 miles. The later work order was when the PICO test was done. Also, an oil consumption test was started once I picked the truck up. After I had driven it for 2077 miles and was bringing the vehicle back to Monument Chevrolet, as instructed for the oil consumption results, when a loud squeeling, then hard knock, power loss and I pulled over. I called Monument and was instructed if I could get it to start and bring it. I drove it to them while knocking and rough running. It has been in the shop for over 2 months for an engine replacement. 2077 miles after recall work! REFER TO: COMPLAINT XXX INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOI

Following engine replacement per NHTSA for 6.2l GMC engine. I am submitting a safety complaint regarding my 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali (refresh body style). The vehicle has experienced repeated failures of driver-assist features and safety system warnings, including: Dash messages: “Lane Keeping Assist System Unavailable” and “Service Safety Restraint System.” When the fault occurs, driver-assist features including Adaptive Cruise Control become inoperative. The issue has recurred multiple times, including after repairs. After one event, the truck sat parked approximately 10 days and the battery discharged to failure and required replacement. A dealership visit documented DTC U3000 (“Internal Electronic Failure”) in the front view camera module. The dealer replaced/programmed/calibrated the front camera on 02/09/2026 at approximately 58,405 miles (invoice/RO #285795). The symptoms have recurred despite prior resets and this repair. I am concerned about loss of driver-assist functions while driving and the presence of a safety restraint system warning. Please investigate whether there is a defect related to the front camera/driver-assist systems and/or electrical module behavior that can cause repeat faults and battery drain on this model.
