2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Engine Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the engine system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Engine reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

I Purchased the vehicle on May 29, 2026 and it stated the 6.2 liter engine recall had been fixed and that I have extended special coverage for the exact issue of the recall until 150008 miles on this vehicle. On July 14, 2026 the vehicle was being driven and stalled out at a traffic light and restarted, yet within a quarter mile it stalled again at the next traffic light and became completely disabled, it would not even allow a shift into nuetral, so I had it towed less than 100 feet into the Walmart on Loudon Road in Concord, NH 03301 parking lot. On July 23, 2026 I was able to get the batter charged and attach a code scanner which showed one code (P0016). Pursuant to Recall N252494001 (which had allegedly been repaired, likely with the bandaid fix of thicker oil) any 6.2 liter GM truck with the loss of propulsion needs to be plugged into a scanner and if code P0016 is present, engine replacement is needed. Specifically noted to the recall is Special coverage N252494003 which provides the coverage to 150,008 miles on this vehicle is directly related to the recall. At the time of loss of propulsion the vehicle had 99,195 miles present on the odometer. The following day July 24, 2026 I had the vehicle towed to Banks Chevrolet GMC in Concord NH, after the vehicle arrived, I spoke with the service department, provided them with the recall paperwork and printout of the special coverage uner the vin as well as a photo of the odometer and my scanner displayining one code P0016. They then informed me it would take them until August 24, 2026 to "diagnose" the vehicle. The recall is clear it just needs a code scan if disabled. I have contacted GM and informed them of the need for a loaner as the vehicle is a vehicle utilized for business. I have since been told they will try to look at it earlier and no loaner will be offered but I "may" be able to be reimbusred $44.00 a day for a rental. There are no rentals for that price that can tow over 9500 pounds. It is unnacceptable.

My gmc sierra had no warning lights, on the way to work on the highway it started making noises which increase every mile .Vehicle just turned 60.049miles . Engine completely seized up , low oil pressure light on , vehicle shuts off , luckily making to the shoulder and off the road. Gm towing wasn't any help in middle of the winter with 0° outside that morning , they told me that it's not covered under warranty and it would take 3 hrs for towing to get to me and out of my packet cost . Dealer diagnosed issue , found code P0016 (crankshaft position-intake camshaft position not plausible) also found excessive amounts of metal in the oil. Vehicle was repaired and second engine was installed .

I was driving at 45 mph and all of a sudden the screens went black as if the truck was turned off and the first thing I did was turn on the hazards because I didn’t know if the engine shut off either there was on coming traffic from both my front and back so I was scared my truck shut off 5-7 seconds later the screens turned back on and everything went back to normal but I was scared that my truck just turned off I made the dealership aware of this issue as soon as I pulled over and they said they had a busy schedule and that they would try to have a manager reach out to me to “squeeze me in” Mind you I just got my truck back from the dealership due to electrical issues and service yesterday and not even 24 hours later this happened so I am upset.

On November 20, 2025, my 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4 equipped with the 3.0L Duramax diesel engine began experiencing intermittent engine overheating conditions. Concerned about a potential safety issue, I contacted a GMC dealership and was advised that because no diagnostic trouble codes were present, there was nothing to diagnose or repair and that I should continue driving the vehicle. Over the following months, the overheating condition continued intermittently. On May 24, 2026, while driving on the highway, the vehicle suddenly overheated, displayed fault code P1098, and entered reduced power ("limp mode"). The vehicle lost normal performance and acceleration while traveling in traffic. This created a significant safety hazard because the vehicle was unable to maintain normal highway speeds, increasing the risk of a rear-end collision or other traffic accident. The loss of power occurred while driving and without sufficient warning, leaving the vehicle unable to safely perform as expected in highway traffic. After researching this issue, I found numerous reports from other GMC and Chevrolet owners describing similar overheating, coolant control valve, thermal management system, and P1098-related failures. Many owners report symptoms involving engine overheating, reduced engine power, and limp mode operation while driving. I am concerned that this may indicate a broader defect involving the vehicle's cooling system and thermal management components. The vehicle exhibited overheating symptoms for approximately six months before the final failure occurred. Additionally, I understand that certain GM vehicles have been subject to service actions involving coolant control valves and thermal management system components. Given the similarity of symptoms, I am concerned that the overheating condition reported in November 2025 may be related to the same type of failure mechanism, yet my vehicle has not been included in any recall or special coverage program.

The contact owns a 2022 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated while driving, the vehicle decelerated unintendedly and failed to exceed 50 MPH on several occasions. The check engine warning light illuminated, and the message " Reduced Acceleration - Drive With Care" was displayed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer on several occasions, and the OnStar sensors, the fuel injectors and 8 spark plugs were replaced; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, who retrieved DTCs: P0747, indicating a pressure control solenoid A stuck on failure, and P0700, indicating a transmission control module failure. The dealer determined that the failure was related to GM Special Coverage Number: N242454441 (Momentary Rear Wheel Lock-Up); however, the VIN was not included. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance in adding the VIN to the Special Coverage. The failure mileage was approximately 95,000.

Multiple times now my vehicle has had its engine locked up while driving at highway and regular uphill driving. Along with towing aswell. I have had it repaired multiple times and last time dealer wouldn’t tell me what happened because GM wouldn’t let them figure out what happened. Along with multiple attempts at fixing the transmission and brakes that are still on going issue. Same with the engine.

I own a 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4. The vehicle developed a clear engine knocking noise. I first brought the vehicle to the dealership while under 150,000 miles for inspection related to a recall. The dealership only performed a computer scan and oil change and stated no issue was found. No mechanical inspection was performed despite the noise. The issue continued and worsened. I returned to the dealership and the vehicle was kept for three days. During that time, the dealership again denied the existence of the noise and stated the vehicle was operating normally. When I picked up the vehicle, I immediately noticed the same noise and requested the technician to inspect it again. At that time, the technician acknowledged the noise and confirmed it was related to the recall. Despite this acknowledgment, General Motors declined to repair the engine and closed the case, offering only partial assistance toward purchasing a new vehicle instead of fixing the defect. The failure to properly diagnose the issue during the initial visit and the subsequent denial during the second inspection allowed a safety-related mechanical defect to worsen. This condition may result in engine failure or sudden loss of power while driving, creating a serious safety risk. The engine noise indicates a potential internal failure which could lead to sudden loss of power while driving, creating a safety risk. The initial failure to properly diagnose the issue may have allowed a safety-related defect to worsen beyond repair. My 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X experienced an engine failure requiring full replacement under warranty. The vehicle was out of service for approximately 46 days. After replacement, the vehicle experienced additional electrical issues and unsafe operating conditions. The replacement engine has now failed again in under 8,000 miles. A dealership performed diagnostic testing (Pico scope) which failed immediately and recommended another full engine replacement. I have been advised not to drive the vehicle due to safety concerns. This appears to be a repeat defect that was not corrected by the initial repair.

I am reporting two separate stall/loss of propulsion events on my 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali Limited (VIN: [XXX] ), which is subject to NHTSA Recall #25V274000 and GM Special Coverage XXX (L87 Engine Loss of Propulsion). INCIDENT 1 — April 16, 2026: While decelerating off a highway exit ramp, the vehicle stalled without warning. The dashboard prompted me to shift to neutral and restart. I performed a rolling restart successfully and continued driving. This stall occurred while decelerating on a highway exit ramp with vehicles traveling at highway speeds behind me. The sudden and unexpected loss of propulsion created a significant rear-end collision risk. INCIDENT 2 — April 17, 2026 (next day): While traveling at approximately 40 MPH and climbing a hill under load, the vehicle stalled a second time. The dashboard again prompted a neutral restart. This time the vehicle would not restart. All I heard was a single click from the starter, followed by a complete dash reboot. The vehicle lost all power repeatedly upon restart attempts. I was stranded on a narrow, high-speed rural road in Standish, Maine during rush hour, with vehicles passing at speed. I was in serious danger. The vehicle was towed to Weirs GMC in Arundel, Maine (the selling dealer), where it currently remains for diagnosis under RO# XXX. Both stall concerns are documented as Warranty Pay. Additional concern: Since the day after purchase (March 28, 2026), I have noticed a pronounced cold-start tick originating from the bottom end of the engine, confirmed by an independent mechanic as coming from inside the engine. This vehicle passed a Recall #25V274000 inspection on December 28, 2025 at 98,233 miles. The tick and stall events began after that inspection. I am requesting this be formally documented as a safety complaint tied to Recall #25V274000 and Special Coverage XXX. I was exiting a main highway and when I let off the accelerator the engine died unexpectedly with no prior signs of failure and would not turn over to restart, luckily I was able to coast onto a side street out of the way of moderate traffic. I called GM roadside assistance and had the vehicle towed to my local dealership. The service department confirmed that the engine was seized and needed replaced. My vehicle went through the L87 recall and passed inspection last fall at 29,400 miles, had another oil change at around 33,500 miles. The engine failed at 37,800 miles. I am the original owner and have always maintained the vehicle to GM standards. I feel that the recall is not solving this problem, because the engines are failing anyway. At this time my vehicle has been at the dealership service department for three and a half weeks, and is waiting on the replacement engine. The dealership has provided a loaner vehicle.

16 year old was driving down the interstate, Truck stopped accelerating out of no where and lost speed while in the middle lane. Steering wheel locked up, Car showed Oil pressure issue. Was told to shift to Neutral and restart. Barely made it to the shoulder. App showed only a battery issue and no other alerts. Thankful we did not get hit as cars were flying by on either side on the interstate. Could have been a serious accident. The dealership confirmed that the engine needed to be replaced. Truck had full 50,000 Mile service recently. Also, had passed the GM recall and were told the engine wasn't effected 9/20/25. No warning lights or issues prior. Completely out of the blue.

This is separate for VIN [XXX] I had to change dealerships because Beck & Masten South / GMC would NOT provide me with a loaner after being told I was on the list and I was next in line. I waited a month and drove to them and spoke with the girl who oversaw loaners. I explained I had severe safety issues such as front-end wobble which is related to transmission issues. And the oil consumption issue and oil light. Once again, I was re-assured the loaner program was indeed still active and I would be put on priority. Again to no avail I had wasted too much time with Beck & Masten. After months of this I found out I did not have to take it to the dealer I bought it from. So, I took it to Monument Chevrolet. I explained my concerns related to the front-end wobble which was very intermittent. And the oil consumption issue which I was very concerned with due to the year model and mileage of the truck. Also, the 75,000.00 price tag was really has me extremely upset... Monument Chevrolet treated me well. I had actually brought it in and called about the steering which was greatly affected by the severe front end wobble more than one time. I was told at first the oil consumption was pretty normal. Until I told them how much I had to add between changes. I have attached two work orders to this complaint. These work orders show what was done at 18017 miles and 18323 miles. The later work order was when the PICO test was done. Also, an oil consumption test was started once I picked the truck up. After I had driven it for 2077 miles and was bringing the vehicle back to Monument Chevrolet, as instructed for the oil consumption results, when a loud squeeling, then hard knock, power loss and I pulled over. I called Monument and was instructed if I could get it to start and bring it. I drove it to them while knocking and rough running. It has been in the shop for over 2 months for an engine replacement. 2077 miles after recall work! REFER TO: COMPLAINT XXX INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOI
