2024 GMC Sierra 1500 Body & structure Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the body or structure system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Body & structure reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

While driving at highway speed in normal traffic, the upper front grill deflector detached from the vehicle and struck the windshield, cracking the windshield. This appears consistent with the defect that is the subject of Safety Recall N24290120.

I was driving down the highway and the top grill trim 84957848 part number, flew off. Hit my windshield. Could’ve caused the small car behind me to blow a tire or damaged their vehicle.

top grill deflector flew off at highway speeds creating a safety hazard for me and others in the highway. 2022 GMC Sierra with the same part and grill was previously recalled for this identical issue. 2022-2026 models have the same problem and should be included in the recall. The front upper grille deflector detached and hit my windshield and bounced off behind me during a drive at normal highway speeds. This created a random flying debris object that appears to have been a problem with the 2022 and later Sierra 1500 models; however, the recall only appears to address the 2022 model. It also appears quite common for the 2024 year model as well. Vehicle has never been in an accident so nothing beyond typical use would have caused damaged to the connections. The plastic connectors appeared to have failed.

The front upper grille broke off and detached at highway speeds. The grille impacted the hood, causing a scratch and dent and became a road hazard and has the potential to cause an accident. This is the same failure reported in NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V-060 that only covers 2022 model years. Research online indicates failures in 2022, 2023 and 2024 vehicles. GMC to date will not warranty or recall this gross safety violation.

While driving 65mph in my 2024 GMC Sierra Denali Ultimate on Interstate 270 in Hilliard, Ohio my chrome grill deflector just flew off and hit my windshield. It then went over my truck and almost caused a major accident with the cars and semi-trucks behind me. I was lucky to maintain control of my own vehicle! It appears to me that the mounting fractured and it looks like manufacturing defect. Looks like the same issues recalled in 2022 year models. How many have to die before GM fixes this issue? They now want $1,500 for a new grill on my 2024 truck.

I was driving on the highway (using cruise control) when the front bumper grill started vibrating (so I tried to slow down) but it kept flapping and flew off before I was able to pull over. I then pulled over on the shoulder and had to walk back to retrieve it. My safety was put at risk because it could have hit my windshield and caused me to have an accident, or, it could have hit someone or another vehicle. I have it and it is available for inspection. It has not been inspected by anyone yet. There were no warning signals prior to the failure.

I was driving down the highway at 65-70mph and the top part of the grill flew off, causing scratches to the wind shield. There’s has been a recall on this for 2022 GMC 1500 Sierra’s but I am driving a 2024 and the issue is still the same.

The contact owns a 2024 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that after driving the vehicle for 20 minutes, the contact would feel significantly weaknand would faint. The contact later noticed that water was leaking from the windshield, which led to a mold infestation. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, and the contact provided a video of the leaking windshield to the dealer; however, the dealer informed the contact that the failure could be duplicated, and no issues were found. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact stated that the Aerotech company had confirmed the presence of mold in the air filter. The contact stated that she had a genetic predisposition to mold, and the mold infestation had caused the contact to sustain swollen sinuses, rashes, hives, to feel tired and to faint at times. The contact sought medical assistance, and the contact's Doctor provided a document that stated that it was unsafe for the contact to operate the vehicle due to the mold. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 10.

2024 GMC Sierra 1500. While driving approximately 75 MPH, the front chrome grille deflector came loose from the passenger side of the vehicle and started flapping. Before I could safely pull over it became detached and flew over the hood of the vehicle striking the front windshield before nearly hitting another moving vehicle behind me. This caused damage to the hood, the other driver did not stop. While the 2024 model vehicle is not listed in NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V060000 (STRUCTURE) recalled on the 2022 model, GM lists the same part number for the 2022-2024 models, therefore the recall should include these years as well. The failure mileage was 27,500.

Twice in the last few weeks my tailgate has opened while driving the vehicle. Prior to this, the tailgate has never dropped while driving since the vehicle has been new. The tailgate was not down whenever I left, but it was down whenever I got to my location. I did not hit the tailgate button to drop the tailgate at any time before during or after this trip. On the one occurrence, items were lost from the bed of the truck, which could cause a road hazard for other motorists. There were no warning lights or notifications that the tailgate was open on the driver information center or elsewhere. I have service scheduled with the dealer on 5/2/25 to inspect the vehicle. I am unsure at what point in the trip the tailgate opened.

At approximate 36700 miles. Upper top molding piece next to the grill, flew off while driving down the highway at 75mph hit my windshield and cracked it. Lucky no one was flowing me. This is the second one that's has broken. The first time was driving in South Dakoda the day after I purchased the truck and one side broke so I was able to stop at a truck stop and duck tape it until I was able to take it to the dealer. This seams to be a flaw, because read this has happen to multiple truck of the same model.

Since my purchase of the vehicle Dec 2023, the tailgate opens on its own. Usually follows hitting a bump such as the rain gutter entering a store parking area. I have also had it occur while driving down the road. Have been told multiple times by my service personnel they have had same complaints from other Sierra 1500 but have no fix for the problem. They have offered to deactivate the electronic tailgate system but this is unacceptable to me. There is a recall for 2500 models with same issue but not for 1500’s. This makes little sense.

The tailgate unlatched while driving. This caused the paint on the tailgate to rub off on the jack of the trailer that I was hauling. This could have caused items in the back of the pickup to fall out onto the road. There is a current recall for 2021-2023 GMC Sierra's with the same issue, but my 2024 GMC Sierra is not included in the recall. The vehicle is going to be inspected tomorrow by the a body shop. There were no lights or messages prior to the failure.
