Loss of motive power due to engine failure post recall remedy
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 36 Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs) alleging engine failure in vehicles subject to Recall 25V274. In each VOQ, the engine had the recall remedy completed prior to the reported failure incident. Recall 25V-274 addresses vehicles equipped with a L87 6.2L V8 gas engine that experienced engine damage or failure. Recall 25V-274’s remedy includes an engine inspection. Based on the results of the inspection the vehicle will receive an oil change to a higher viscosity oil or an engine replacement. The complaints received allege failures of both remedies. ODI is opening this Recall Query (RQ) to assess the adequacy of the remedy for Recall 25V-274. Loss of motive power due to engine failure
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 1,157 reports of engine bearing failure failures in the L87 6.2L engine produced by General Motors (GM). Of the 1,157 reports received, 173 are outside of the scope of recall 25V-274. These engines are installed in Model Years (MY) 2019–2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500, and 2021-2024MY Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe, GMC Yukon/Yukon XL, and Cadillac Escalade/Escalade ESV vehicles. The subject engine failures were investigated as part of a Preliminary Evaluation (PE25001). GM determined that these engine failures were due to multiple supplier manufacturing and quality issues. GM issued recall 25V-274 to address the supplier manufacturing and quality issues produced between March 1, 2021, and May 31, 2024. Based on the issuance of recall 25V-274, NHTSA has closed PE25001. ODI continues to receive a significant number of reports of engine failure in vehicles outside the scope of 25V-274. This presents a potential safety risk that warrants further investigation. ODI is opening this Engineering Analysis (EA) to further evaluate the scope and severity of the potential problem and to fully assess the potential safety-related issues of vehicles built outside the recall scope. Loss of motive power due to engine failure
On January 16, 2025, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Preliminary Evaluation PE25001 after receiving complaints and field reports concerning engine failures in MY2019-2024 GM’s full-size truck and SUV T1XX platform equipped with the L87 6.2L V8 engine. These complainants alleged engine bearing failures resulting in knocking and growling noises from the engine’s bottom end and in some cases more severe consequences such as broken connecting rods leading to engine damage, or engine failure. If the engine fails during vehicle operation, the vehicle will lose propulsion, increasing the risk of a crash. On April 24, 2025, GM issued recall 25V-274 to address the concern with L87 engines produced between March 1, 2021, and May 31, 2024. GM cited the root cause as a supplier manufacturing and quality issues. GM’s recall remedy will be either an oil change to an oil with a different viscosity or engine replacement depending on the results of the remedy inspection procedure. To date, ODI has received 1,157 allegations of engine bearing failure. GM submitted 55,464 reports in total, with 29,752 unique VINs. ODI continues to receive allegations of L87 engine failures which fall outside of the scope of recall 25V-274. Based on GM’s recall, ODI will close this PE. NHTSA will continue to investigate complaints of engine failure outside the scope of recall 25V-274 as part ofEngineering Analysis (EA25007). On [XXX] I was driving my 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 Vin # [XXX] on a major highway in Houston when without warning the engine shut off, stranding me in the middle of busy traffic. I was able to get to the shoulder and restart the truck, but no warning lights came on so I continued on my drive when approximately 20 minutes later, while still on a busy freeway, the engine shut off again. I was able to restart the truck and within another 15 minutes the check engine light appeared, the engine lost power and started making a loud rattling noise. Roughly 2 minutes later, as I was attempting to pull over to the shoulder and safety, the truck shut off and would not restart. This was the 3rd time for it to stall out on a busy freeway which was very dangerous for myself and the other drivers. I contacted the local Chevy dealership and they sent a tow truck out to tow the truck back to their dealership service center. I was later contacted by a service advisor that said they found a code P0016. He informed me that the engine would need to be replaced. As of today 8/11/26, they are still waiting on backordered parts to arrive before they can even start on any repairs. transmission shift hard and slipping. When step on gas to go faster transmission shifts really hard like going drop on ground. Sometimes wont shift at all only goes up to 69 till left off gas and then transmission will shift. Start happening with about 10000 miles on truck and GMC said this is normal. Now need a torque converter and shift module in it.

Was traveling home and started losing power going up a hill on XXX. The truck was surging, the check engine light came on and an audible warning of no (low?) oil pressure. The truck shut off on a busy interstate highway and barely got onto the shoulder. The tow truck driver had to lay on the ground with part of his body in the lane of travel to place "skids" under the rear tires because there is no way to place this vehicle in neutral for a tow without a special GM tool. When I contacted Harry Robinson GMC service center in [XXX], they told me that it was no longer a safety recall because the truck had passed diagnostics and new, high viscosity oil was put in the truck XXX. The GMC app says code P0016 which is the dreaded 6.2L camshaft to crankshaft alignment that accompanies engine component failure. Lifter failure at 20000 miles

Ever since I bought this truck new, I noticed a lot of metal shavings and debris in the oil filter every single time I changed the oil. I took it to the dealership multiple times to have this looked into before the engine recall came out. The dealership took pictures of the metal and sent them to a General Motors engineer, but the engineer just told them it was "normal." Later on, the truck went in for the official recall inspection, passed the PICO test, and nothing was fixed. Then on August 4, 2026, I was driving on a crowded expressway right through a construction zone with absolutely no shoulder to pull over on. Out of nowhere, the truck started hesitating badly, lost power, and the engine started making a really loud knocking noise. It barely ran, and it was incredibly dangerous because there was nowhere to go and traffic was heavy. Luckily, I was able to limp the truck along just far enough to clear the construction zone and pull over safely. the truck was towed to the dealer were they confirmed the engine was blown, and needs replaced.

The contact owns a 2024 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the engine seized, and the transmission independently shifted into park(P). The failure had occurred while driving on a busy highway at highway speeds. The contact's minor children were occupants inside the vehicle during the failure. The vehicle stalled in the middle of the highway. No warning lights were illuminated. The contact stated that while attempting to restart the vehicle, the vehicle failed to start. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed with catastrophic engine failure. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure reoccurred eight months later. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with catastrophic engine failure a second time. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was in the process of being repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 39,000.

While driving on XXX I received a message on the dash: service transmission, will not be able to shift soon. I went to the nearest GMC service center, located in [XXX]. Their diagnostics indicated that the Gear Shift Control Module needed to be replaced with new PN 86421783. That part was not available until XXX, but old PN 86274946 was available at a few dealersships, and it acould possibly be ordered and arrive sooner than XXX. I was told that driving the truck would be okay, but the part should be replaced as soon as possible. I live over an hour's drive from [XXX], and with the assurance that driving the GMC was okay, I chose to have the part shipped to and replaced at the dealership in [XXX], the nearest one to [XXX]. I drove back to [XXX], stopping at the Waldoboro dealership to make an appointment for their inspection of my truck, their troubleshooting the problem, and ordering the necessary parts to repair the transmission. When the part number went into their ordering system, the dealership was advised that no parts were available and no availability date was known. I contacted GMC Customer Assistance to express my concern and request assistance in locating the parts, but she was also unable to locate the parts or speed their availability. Again, on the assurance that the truck was okay to drive, on XXX I drove to my storage units near [XXX], and when I tried to leave and shifted into reverse the truck would not move. AAA towed me to the dealership in Waldoboro, and the replacement parts search began. Finally, on 7/28/26 I was advised that the part was at the dealership, and on XXX I picked up my repaired GMC truck. Certain vehicles may have a condition in which the Engine Control Module (ECM) does not sufficiently control fuel injector flow rate under certain driving conditions. Dealers are to reprogram the ECM.
