2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid Driver assistance Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the driver-assistance system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Driver assistance reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

2023 Honda CR-V, purchased new in Mar 2023 from Friendly Honda, Poughkeepsie, NY. All regular service completed at Lia Honda, Brewster, NY. On [XXX], car was driven without incident and parked inside a garage. On [XXX] upon ignition, car immediately displayed a “christmas tree” of warnings for every major system, including but not limited to: Electric Power Steering, AWD, Adaptive Cruise Control, Collision Mitigation, Hill Descent, Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Keeping Assistance. Behavior has continued every time the car is started. Car remains drivable, but all safety and driver assistance systems are disabled. In addition, on [XXX] and [XXX], after stopping at a stop sign, car had very limited power and could only accelerate to 30 mph on a flat road and 20 mph on an incline. Problem was resolved only by coming to a complete stop then accelerating again. This is a significant safety concern, as if this were to happen in stop-and-go traffic on a highway, the car would be unable to accelerate to highway speeds. On 6/20/26, I took the car to Lia Honda in Brewster, NY for diagnosis. They reported a failed Electric Power Steering Control Unit/Steering Rack (trouble code U0420-68). They explained that this single electrical component failure also caused all other components to report failures because they are connected in a ring. Estimated repair cost $4,595.98. I have filed a complaint with Honda to request out-of-warranty coverage. Car is ≈3 years old, 3 months out of warranty, and only lightly used at 17,484 miles. Note that this car falls under NHTSA recall 24V-744, which pertains to a manufacturing defect in the worm gear of the Electric Power Steering. We had the recall service completed on 12/26/24, but it seems possible that continued friction in the worm gear may result in overloading of the EPS control unit. Other Honda CR-V owners have reported similar issues online, so this does not appear to be an isolated incident. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Available for inspection. The automatic braking is malfunctioning, we turned off the crash detention breaking as the CR-V would suddenly break without notice. Despite this being turned off, the vehicle will still break. It often happens when driving any speed over 25 mph. No vehicles in front or the side and the vehicle will simply break. No warning lights will appear (unlike with the crash detection turned on). It comes in suddenly and goes away suddenly. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Mostly the risk of being rear ended. Fortunately no one has been immediately behind us. If there was, we would be in many accidents. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? No, it cannot be reproduced. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No, we are taking it in to have it looked at again for this issue. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No warning lights, messages, or other symptoms. It only happens (so far) when the vehicle is on cruise control. It will I just break for no reason. The normal dinging sound you hear when it trying to prevent a crash also doesn’t appear or sound. It just breaks.

All the warning comes on the dashboard randomly. I took it to the service, they said they reset the system. However, today, my daughter was driving to her school. Again, all the warning lights came on and the car braked itself. This is a very dangerous as my daughter is a new driver. I made another appointment with the service department. Please do something,

On my 2023 Honda crv sport the steering wheel sticks, you have to constantly be correcting it. it is annoying and one could easily over compensate causing an accident.

While driving on the interstate I started experiencing a sensation that the lane departure/lane assist was attempting to veer me off the road to the left. After turning off all assist features the car continued to steer me off the road. While traveling in particular at higher speeds, on the interstate, it proceeded to get worse. Before traveling for 10 hour drive I took my car in for an oil change and turn off all of the features, November 21, 2023. I described my issue and was informed that it was an issue with the steering rack not the features. My car has been at the dealership since that day. No updates from Honda.

Steering sticks when going over any sort of lane departure. This is dangerous when exiting a tight offramp or coming on a tight onramp. Once the sterring wheel sticks it takes a second or two to unstick causing some near crashes for sure. Not able to get the car to replacte with a local honda dealer went back and took the foreman for a ride and still was not able to replicate it either.

When I drove the vehicle at Highway Speed 60-70 around a curve stretch, the steering appeared to be restricted like as if the road assistance is kicking in but I was not crossing another lane. It is pretty consistent. I sort of disregard it but I started to noticed recently online a lot of similar complaints. So I took it in to the dealer 2/26/24 they ordered a part #53620-3D5-A14. The dealer couldn't give me a timeline when the part will be in and fixed. My daughter normally drives the vehicle and she have said it's been ongoing for a while.

Lane departure correction will occur when you are no where near the line; this has resulted in over correcting steering by the car and has almost caused wrecks.

The contact owns a 2023 Honda CR-V. The contact stated that while his wife was driving 40 MPH, the steering wheel was pulling to the right and to the left independently. The contact's wife was able to continue driving. The message "Contact Dealership. Driver Assist Trying to Engage By Itself" was displayed. The contact stated that the failure recurred while driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who informed the contact it was a known failure; however, the parts were not available to repair the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact notified the manufacturer of the failure and inquired about a rental assistance, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 6,500.

The vehicle starts to shift me off of the road as steering wheel gets “stuck”while driving on the interstate. Lane assist and any/all safety features were not enabled. Took my car to the Honda dealership on November 21. I was informed it is “sticky steering” and the part is on backorder indefinitely.

The steering after a few miles, feels sticky. The steering wheel will softly jerk on the highway. Almost feels like adjusting for lane departure, but I am not departing the lane. This also causes lane keeping to feel jerky. Also, the android auto when plugged in and apps being used will turn off the radio or the sound system. Thank you

Purchased my car in July new. In August I got a CBMS warning for emergency brake system failure. Took it in and they said the front camera failed and needed to be replaced. It’s been on backorder since August 23. Because of this all the safety features including lane assist had to be turned off because the steering wheel would randomly jerk even when I was within the lane lines. Turned off the safety features and around 10,000 miles the steering wheel started clicking and aggressively jerking to the right or left while driving similarly to how it jerked when the safety features were on, even though they were already turned off from the previous steering wheel issues. Brought it to the dealership and they said the EPS rack failed and the care was unfit to drive. They put me in a rental since two safety issues occurred in the vehicle.

Steering wheel issue: I had a similar issue with my old 22 Civic. Now it's a known and common problem, it's hard to make small adjustments. It may not be related to the speed or the use of LKAS. There is no warning on the dashboard. Brake pedal: Randomly I feel friction on the pedal when I press it. Like the steering wheel issue it starts to happen and disappears. No warning messages. LKAS giving false warnings, especially when going backwards.

I was driving in 55 mph zone in heavy rain and car slowed down to less than 25 mph and would not accelerate over 25 mph when I pressed the gas. Dashboard lit up amber and stated “collision mitigation braking system problem..see your dealer” and lane departure problem. Car eventually accelerated but automatically decreased speed again and I was unable to accelerate after pressing gas. This happened at least 6 separate times in a 7 mile drive home. This could have easily caused an accident because visibility was low due to heavy rain and it was nighttime.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers.
