2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid Steering Problems

2023 Honda CR-V, purchased new in Mar 2023 from Friendly Honda, Poughkeepsie, NY. All regular service completed at Lia Honda, Brewster, NY. On [XXX], car was driven without incident and parked inside a garage. On [XXX] upon ignition, car immediately displayed a “christmas tree” of warnings for every major system, including but not limited to: Electric Power Steering, AWD, Adaptive Cruise Control, Collision Mitigation, Hill Descent, Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Keeping Assistance. Behavior has continued every time the car is started. Car remains drivable, but all safety and driver assistance systems are disabled. In addition, on [XXX] and [XXX], after stopping at a stop sign, car had very limited power and could only accelerate to 30 mph on a flat road and 20 mph on an incline. Problem was resolved only by coming to a complete stop then accelerating again. This is a significant safety concern, as if this were to happen in stop-and-go traffic on a highway, the car would be unable to accelerate to highway speeds. On 6/20/26, I took the car to Lia Honda in Brewster, NY for diagnosis. They reported a failed Electric Power Steering Control Unit/Steering Rack (trouble code U0420-68). They explained that this single electrical component failure also caused all other components to report failures because they are connected in a ring. Estimated repair cost $4,595.98. I have filed a complaint with Honda to request out-of-warranty coverage. Car is ≈3 years old, 3 months out of warranty, and only lightly used at 17,484 miles. Note that this car falls under NHTSA recall 24V-744, which pertains to a manufacturing defect in the worm gear of the Electric Power Steering. We had the recall service completed on 12/26/24, but it seems possible that continued friction in the worm gear may result in overloading of the EPS control unit. When turning on a curve the steering locks up/sticks for about 2 or 3 seconds and then it unlocks. When it locks up I could unlock it by using a bit of force to unlock/unstick it before it does by itself. I took to dealer and they say I need the whole steering rack. I have done research on this issue and I saw lots of 2023 crv owners are reporting the same issues. There is a recall to replace steering spring and to lubricate. But this recall issue is affecting cr-v whole rack and it should be in the recall. Honda did not make the steering properly and its causing many steering issues. There should be a recall on all steering issues. I currently have to drive my car with this issue because I don't have $4k for a new rack which is what they told me at dealer it cost. My crv is less than 2 years old and I should not be experiencing a issue like this and operating this vehicle which is not safe because Honda did not manufacture steering components correctly.

As I'm turning at curve the steering locks up and sticks and I have to use a both hands to stay in my lane. You can easily hit a car turning the curve next to you when the steering locks up. I took it to dealer and they knew about having these issues from other CR-V and they said it's the steering rack. pinion. No lights or warning turn on when this happens. Other honda owners on reddit were having the same issues. It's where I found out I can put a complaint so this issue can be reviewed.

My car steering well gets randomly stuck for seconds at a time, Honda has failed to comply and help us get the steering wheel recall done since October 2024 and now February 2025. They keep saying we are on the list and they will send us a letter home or to keep waiting 12-15 days but there is no real help from Honda.

At least two times I can recall after starting vehicle and shifting into reverse the car moved forward instead of reverse. I applied the brake and tried again, but the same thing happened. At that point I shifted into park, turned the vehicle off, and restarted it. After doing this and shifting into reverse the vehicle backed up normally. Fortunately I did not hit anything. Additionally another incident occurred where I was changing lanes to make a left turn at approximately 40 MPH the steering became very heavy and I was briefly unable to steer to change direction. While in the turning lane and unable to turn, I placed the vehicle in park, shut off the vehicle and restarted it. This cured the problem and I was able to proceed.

When attempting to turn left the steering began having some resistance. Initially it felt like a minor problem but then at higher speeds, like taking left hand curves on the freeway at 45 miles an hour, the car started abruptly jerking to the right. I had to fight the steering to try to keep the car in my lane but it slightly went into the right lane momentarily. I got off the freeway at the next exit and drove slowly on surface streets to get home. The next morning I took the car in to the Honda service department to address this issue. I was told the steering unit needed to be replaced but the parts were unavailable. After several days I have yet to find out how long until parts can be delivered. There were no warning signals or messages from the car prior to this issue. The car is presently at the Honda service department. It will remain there until it can be repaired and is safe to drive again. It should be available for inspection through Showcase Honda Service at 1333 E Camelback Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85014.

Since approximately 5K to 10K miles on the car, the steering has been "sticky." I mean the steering seems to have discreet sticky points or detents when trying to turn the steering wheel, as if the steering system is fighting me from turning the wheel. It is like this both when parked and when driving. When parked, there seems to be a noticeable looseness in the steering when turning the steering wheel either direction, and also has these sticky detents when turning the wheel. Same thing when driving at all speeds. It seems to be getting worse. It is so noticeable that I (and any passengers) can hear it when trying to turn the wheel. At some point, I think the car might start getting unsafe to drive like this if it continues to get worse. The car was written up at the purchasing dealer (John Eagle Honda of Dallas TX) around 11K miles and some time around October 2023, but at that time they claimed that they could not reproduce the problem. So I got an oil change that was due and moved on, thinking it might go away on its own. I wrote the car up again at the same dealership on {XXX}, 2024 at 24,656 miles, and this time they were able to reproduce the problem and wrote it up properly. It has now been nearly three months since then, and the part (steering rack assembly and gearbox) has been on backorder with indeterminate ETA. As of this writing, the car has about 32K miles on it, and I continue to have to drive this car with faulty steering. Took our 2023 CRV Hybrid in because the steering was sticking at 45 miles an hour, was told the steering rack needs replaced and is in back order for months and they have 4 ahead of us and just replaced 6 that were on back order for 4 months I think they said. Other consumers have reported waiting up to 8 months! people are driving their vehicles when others have reported their steering froze up on the freeway!! I am reporting so a recall can be established before if not already deaths occur. Our dealer has a warranty established to lease us a vehicle holding ours until the part comes in. I still have to pay the payment but at least the road will be safe.

Easiest way to explain it is the steering wheel gets stuck while driving. This is result in a car accident that seriously hurts others or myself because my steering wheel locked up or got stuck. This issue started back in September 2023 after I had my car serviced and there was a recall on the system that need some update. My husband drove the car and immediately noticed what I had been feeling and I took my car in 1-18-2024 due to this recurrent issue. Dealership confirmed that my suv will need the steering wheel rack replaced was told the car shouldn’t be driven due to safety reasons caused by this faulty part. Dealer confirmed on 1-18-2024 that the part needs to be replaced however the part is on back order and no date for arrive has been set. My car has been sitting in my garage for 3 months now due to this safety issue which in fact there should be a recall linked to my vin #.

Filed complaint recently. Talked to dealer and was told that 184 of these Power Steering units are on Back Order with NO ESIMATED DELIVERY DATE. This is criminal. Honda says the problem as an inconvenience and will not lockup the steering. I would not like to be the first one that happens too. THIS NEEDS TO BE ESCALATED TO A RECALL.

A phone call was made on 4/18/24 to check on the status. I was told September is the earliest expected date for the parts. This type of delay is unacceptable.

Steering wheel was jerking while I was driving. I took the car to the dealership where I was told the car would need a new steering rack. Some part of it was failing and that is why the steering wheel would move on it's own. I believe my safety was put at risk, because at any moment the steering rack would not work as it should and jerk, or potentially stop working, while I was driving. There were no warning messages given by the car. The issue started at around 9000 miles.

Our new CRV developed "sticky" steering within months of being new. Periodically, the steering wheel will momentarily catch when making minor steering adjustments, requiring additional force to make the wheel respond. In heavy traffic, especially at highway speeds, this creates a dangerous situation, preventing subtle steering changes and often causing oversteering when exerting the extra force. The issue was diagnosed by the dealership, Honda of Cleveland, TN, in mid November and a new steering rack was ordered. However, the replacement part is currently not available until September '24. The dealership says that the vehicle is safe to drive so no other solution has been offered. The problem continues to worsen, but the vehicle is the only source of transportation for my wife to commute to work and for our entire family to travel on extended trips, so we have no option but to drive it.
