What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2011 Honda CR-V, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2011 Honda CR-V. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed, the vehicle rear-ended the vehicle ahead. The front driver's side air bag did not fully deploy. No warning lights were illuminated. The contact stated that during the crash, the right wrist went through the steering wheel opening. The vehicle was towed to a local tow yard. A Police report was filed. The contact was transferred to the local medical center by ambulance. The contact sustained a severe fracture to the right wrist. In addition, the contact was scheduled for surgery within the upcoming weeks. The vehicle was not accessed by the insurance company. The dealer was not made aware of the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 72,000.
The contact owns a 2011 Honda CR-V. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for routine maintenance, where it was determined there was a front passenger’s air bag issue with the wiring underneath the seat related to DTC: F1-11 and E2-11. No warning lights were illuminated. The contact stated the failure was associated with NTSA Campaign Number: 19V502000 (Air Bags). The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted due to a phone issue. The failure mileage was approximately 142,500.
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
Odometer Fraud. The contact purchased a 2011 Honda CR-V. The contact discovered a mileage discrepancy after the purchase. The vehicle was a private sale. At the time of purchase, the mileage was 106,000. It was later discovered upon checking a Carfax Report that the mileage was 206,086.
DOOR LOCK ACTUATOR. It is constantly malfunctioning. You are driving with small kids, and the doors keep unlocking and locking as the vehicle is in motion. I am very concerned, especially with children inside. It gets to a point that it sounds like a machine gun while you are driving, so, if you forget about it, suddenly you hear the loud noise and you think there is a drive by shooting nearby. There was a class action lawsuit regarding this a few years ago and a recall on this part. Today I locked my car after I parked and went into my house, suddenly I heard this horn noise on and off by itself without touching the key or the fob. I find this extremely dangerous. Let's say you get trapped inside your car and suddenly you cannot get out. I looked a little dipper and found out that Honda did not want to fix this issue. This is unacceptable and very unfair. Is there something someone can do to remediate it?
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2011 Honda CR-V. The contact stated that the check engine warning light remained illuminated on the vehicle. The contact stated that over time she became aware that the oil level was gradually getting lower than normal. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where the vehicle was diagnosed, and the contact was informed that the engine was consuming an excessive amount of engine oil. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be disassembled for additional diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact referenced Customer Service Program: 12-089; as the possible cause for the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 103,000.
Oil consumption is exaggerated with to obvious observed signs, I.e, no visible leaks, no blue smoke from tailpipe, no smell behind vehicle. Oil needs to be added every ~70 miles as per the dipstick. Engine light will illuminate when oil too low. Car running fine otherwise. Is this happening to others? Respectfully, Careful Driver
Body & structure
Reports naming the vehicle structure, frame, body panels, doors, hood and trim.
From owner reports, verbatim
Catastrophic rust damage to the rear trailing arm and its mounting point, where the metal has completely rotted through and fractured
The contact owns a 2011 Honda CR-V. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V228000 (Structure). The contact stated that while attempting to register the vehicle, the vehicle failed the State Inspection due to frame corrosion. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, where it was diagnosed with severe frame corrosion, and the failure was beyond repair. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue approximately five times, but the contact had not yet received a call back after approximately two months. The failure mileage was approximately 121,000.
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2011 Honda CR-V. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the brake pedal engaged independently as the ABS warning light illuminated, causing the vehicle to stop independently. The contact attempted to release the brake pedal however, the brake pedal failed to release. The contact waited for a several minutes and the vehicle resumed normal operation. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed however, the mechanic was unable to duplicate the issue. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact did not feel safe driving the vehicle. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 55,078.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2011 HONDA CR-V. WHILE STOPPED AT A STOP LIGHT TO MAKE A LEFT TURN, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED TO APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH WHILE THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE CRASHED INTO A NEARBY FENCE AND CAME TO A STOP IN A CLUSTER OF BUSHES. THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED AND DEEMED DESTROYED. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE CONTACT SPRAINED HER RIGHT HAND AND RECEIVED MEDICAL ATTENTION. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE; HOWEVER, A CASE WAS NOT OPENED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 20,000.
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
Yes had it inspected rear frame is rusting out affecting the sway bars which I will also need a new exhaust due to the rust. I did see honda has a recall but not in my state.
Rusted rear strut mount causing a rear wheel "thump" Heard on mild to severe road ruts. Repair shop reported possible "control arm support" rust.
Suspension
Reports naming suspension components — springs, struts, shocks, control arms and related hardware.
From owner reports, verbatim
23V228000 recall involving rust on the frame and rear end. Called into Honda and was told that the recall was closed and repairs were made ?? Impossible I just bought this vehicle in 02-2026 and was not made aware of anything being done.. no records online either of repairs . Car is very unsafe to be driving

Interior & seats
Reports naming seats, latches, locks, linkages and interior fittings.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2011 Honda CR-V. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the driver’s and passenger’s side front doors were making an abnormal grinding sound. While depressing the lock button, the noise ceased. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer where it was diagnosed that all four door actuators needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 230,000.
Faulty actuator in front passenger door, door remains locked shut and as a result the hatch is also locked shut due to connection between doors. Honda has quoted me $900 to repair including needing to destroy interior panel and pay to replace part due to issue that was recalled in 2007-09 CR-V's. Approximately mileage is 160,000.
Other / unspecified
Reports whose component NHTSA recorded as unknown, or that do not map to one of the categories above.
From owner reports, verbatim
We bought this vehicle for our grandson for a great price, so we signed an "as is"agreement, knowing the dealer didn't inspect it. We were unaware that the rear axle housing was completely rusted. On 1/1/2026, he was driving and the rear axle housing broke off and the car is disabled. We had it towed to our home. Is this expensive to repair and if so, where do we begin. It seems the recall was ignored. Is it worth repairing?
Scheduled recall to be looked at, however my local dealership called me the day of appointment to tell me they do not have the part for that and would need to order it and then schedule my appointment. So the person ordered it and then I had to call back to see if the part came in yet. Upon looking at my car on a lift, they told me they would have to charge me to fix the car because the lug nut they stripped looking at my vehicle was stripped. I was not willing to pay them so the dealership sent me home. I called back to see how to fix it and they never offered me an answer. It’s been needing the recall for years since and no Honda dealership is able to fix it.
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.

I was at a corner waiting for traffic to clear so I could make a turn left. When I started to accelerate the vehicle started to hesitate and continued. The on coming car had to slam on their brakes and swerve to avoid hitting my passenger side. Since that time I had found out there was a service bulletin relating to this problem. Honda Service Bulletin 17-040. This is my granddaughters car and now I am reluctant to let her drive the vehicle. It is a very serious safety issue!! My frustration is that when I have discussed the issue with 2 different Honda dealers they didn't disclose there was a bulleting but rather recommended changing the transmission fluid and the information was confusing. One dealer recommended changing the fluid once and another recommended I change it three times at the same appointment. Since the incident I have had an opportunity to drive my other granddaughters 2011 Honda CRV and it is displaying the same shudder issue on acceleration and when you are at 40 miles and try to accelerate which she noticed. Obviously, if you were trying to pass another vehicle on a two lane highway and it started the shudder you would be involved in a head on crash resulting in serious injury or death. I believe there should be a recall to correct this problem. The cost to replace the torque converter is $3,000 +. The bulletin 17-040 states the affect vehicles are 2012-14. It needs to be revised to include 2011 Honda CRV vehicle. I found the bulletin myself through a group that shares information regarding Honda CRV vehicles. The bulletin was issued on May 20, 2017 06492 Version 1. The vehicle number for the 2011 Honda CRV is 5J6RE4H72BL017198
Tires & wheels
Reports naming tires, wheels, hubs, or the tire-pressure monitoring system.
From owner reports, verbatim
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HONDA CR-V EQUIPPED WITH COOPER CS4 TIRES, SIZE: 225/65R17 (NA). WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH, THE REAR DRIVER SIDE TIRE BLEW OUT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE INNER TUBE RUPTURED. THE TIRE FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE TIRE WAS REPLACED. THE TIRE WAS A REPLACEMENT TIRE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE VEHICLE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 65,000 AND THE TIRE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 44,000.
I CALLED IN A CLAIM/COMPLAINT AROUND JUNE 8 2012 FOR PREMATURE WEAR FOR CONTINENTAL 225/65R17-102T TIRES EQUIPPED ON 2011 HONDA CR-V TO CONTINENTAL &HONDA. CONTINENTAL ADVERTISES TIRES ARE WARRANTED FOR 65,000 MILES OR 6 YEARS. IT BECAME NECESSARY TO REPLACE ALL 4 TIRES 0608/2012 AT 31,463 MILES OR LESS THAN HALF THE EXPECTED LIFE OF THE TIRE BECAUSE THE TIRES CAUSE MY VEHICLE TO FAIL INSPECTION. THE VEHICLE AND TIRES CONSISTENTLY WERE SERVICED BY ACCREDITED HONDA DEALER & TIRE PRESSURE MAINTAINED.BOTH HONDA AND CONTINENTAL REFUSED TO HONOR THE WARRANTY. *TR
Visibility
Reports naming windshields, glass, wipers, defrosters and mirrors.
From owner reports, verbatim
The defrost mode selector switch malfunctioned preventing the removal of fog on the windshield from inside humidity during rain
Sunroof blew out while driving leaving a hole and shattered glass
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
I keep having to replace the rack and pinion due to poor steering, loose steering, and leaking fluid. Replaced in 2019, am now replacing again in 2023 after putting less than another 20k miles on the car in this four-year timespan.
UPON TAKING THIS VEHICLE IN FOR ITS 90,000 MILE MAINTENANCE SERVICE, THE HONDA CERTIFIED MECHANICS INFORMED US THAT THE POWER STEERING RACK WAS LEAKING FLUID AND WOULD NOT PASS NEW YORK STATE SAFETY INSPECTION. THE EXACT MILEAGE OF THE CAR WAS AT 91653. WE HAD TO REPLACE THE RACK SYSTEM AT A COST TO US OF OVER $1,000.00. THIS SYSTEM FAILURE SHOULD NOT HAVE OCCURRED AT THIS STAGE OF THE CAR'S LIFE. I WOULD LIKE AN INVESTIGATION INITIATED TO SEE IF A RECALL IS WARRANTED. SOME ONLINE RESEARCH HAS SHOWN ME THAT OTHER 2011 CRV OWNERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS EXACT SAME PROBLEM.
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
POOR ACCELERATION AND PICKUP WHEN APPLYING GAS. WORSE IN HOTTER WEATHER. THERE IS A HONDA SERVICE BULLETIN FOR THUS PROBLEM ON SAME YEAR VEHICLE FOR COMPUTER FIRMWARE UPDATE TO FIX THE PROBLEM, 10-077 TSB, BUT MY LOCAL HONDA DEALER REFUSES TO DO IT. SAYS MY VIN DOESN'T FALL INTO IT, EVEN KNOW THE SYMPTOMS ARE EXACTLY WHAT IT FIXES. FRUSTRATED. NO PICKUP IS REALLY DANGEROUS WHEN TRYING TO GET ON INTERSTATE AND IT IS MY DAUGHTER'S CAR.
THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN RUNNING ROUGH IN THE HIGHWAY AND ROUGH WHEN IDLING. WE HAVE CHOSEN TO KEEP IT BECAUSE WE HAVE TRUST IN HONDA'S RELIABILITY. FIVE DAYS AGO, THE CAR WAS RUNNING AND THE WHOLE FAMILY WAS IN IT. ALL OF A SUDDEN, ITS ENGINE SOUNDED LIKE 'JUNK' WHICH NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE. WE WERE ALL NERVOUS AND CONFUSED AND WE WERE ABOUT 20 MILES AWAY FROM HOME. OUR SAFETY IN THE CAR WAS UNCERTAIN AND THE ROADS GOING HOME HAD VARYING SPEEDS BETWEEN 30 TO 65 MI/HR. WE KNOW TODAY THAT THE ENGINE HAS SEVERE PROBLEM DUE TO HIGH OIL CONSUMPTION WHICH IS EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING.
Seat belts
Reports naming seat belts, buckles, retractors and pretensioners.
From owner reports, verbatim
I AM GETTING A SEAT BELT CODE 27-10 AND 28-10 WHICH I AM TOLD COULD AFFECT THE AIR BAGS GOING OFF.
1. WITH AND W/O SNOW TIRES, NO MATTER THE WEATHER OR ROAD CONDITIONS: STRONG HOT RUBBER BURNING SMELL BY BACK RIGHT WHEEL. D/T NO BAFFLE NEAR MUFFLER. THIS HAPPENS WITH SHORT TRIPS, FREE WAY OR CITY TRIPS 2. AT ONE TIME WOULD NOT SHIFT DOWN ON HILLS. OR WOULD ENGINE WOULD NEARLY DIE GOING UP HILLS WITH AC RADIO ON, AND LATTERLY CHUGGED UP HILL THIS IS RELATED TO THE GEAR NOT SHIFTING. THIS IS A TERRIBLE FEELING GOING UP HILL WITH NOTHING BUT TWO PASSENGERS AND NO LOAD 3. SEATS MEMORY FOAM FAILS AND FLATTENS OUT , NEARLY 96000 MILES 4. SEAT BELTS FRAY IN TIME, 5. SEAT BELTS WON'T RETRACT WELL , ESPECIALLY ON DRIVERS SIDE 6. TIRES ROUTINELY HAVE OUTSIDE WEAR, EVEN WITH ROTATION THROUGH DISCOUNT TIRE WHERE THEY CROSS ROTATE. THEY ARE BETTER THAN DEALER 7. DOME LIGHT IN FRONT FAILED 8. TACHOMETER RUNS HIGH LIKE 3-4000 RPM THIS HAS HAPPENED SINCE PURCHASE JAN 29, 2011, BUT I WILL PUT TODAYS DATE BELOW RE LAST QUESTION ABOUT MILEAGE ON VEHICLE I WILL PUT TODAYS MILEAGE EVEN THOUGH HAPPENED THROUGH OUT OWNERSHIP

Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.
From owner reports, verbatim
UPON PURCHASING MY 2011 HONDA CRV, I HAVE HAD A MAJOR CONCERN FOR SAFETY OF VERY DIM HEADLIGHTS. I HAVE PREVIOUSLY BROUGHT THIS ISSUE UP TO CAR MAX SERVICE CENTER. THE ONLY ANSWER RECIEVED WAS THEY WERE AWARE OF THIS ISSUE, BUT IT WAS JUST AN ISSUE WITH THIS YEAR OF HONDA CRV.
THE DESIGN OF THE HEADLIGHTS DO NOT ALLOW VISIBILITY ON THE ROADWAY AT NIGHT MORE THAN ABOUT 150 FEET. I HAVE CHANGED BULBS SEVERAL TIMES BUT THAT IS NOT THE PROBLEM. THE CR-V HOUSING CONFIGURATION DOES NOT ALLOW LIGHTING TO BE ADJUSTED FOR ANY DISTANCE. THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN WELL DOCUMENTED IN FORUMS ALL OVER THE INTERNET FOR YEARS AND NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE. (JUST GOOGLE "HONDA CR-V HEADLIGHT PROBLEM") I OWN A TUNDRA TRUCK, AND A FORD ESCAPE, AND THE LIGHTING GOING DOWN MY ALLEY AT NIGHT IS PERFECT, BUT WHEN I MAKE THE SAME DRIVE DOWN THE ALLEY WITH THE HONDA CR-V, I CAN ONLY SEE 3 HOUSES IN FRONT OF ME! FOR YEARS I HAVE REFUSED TO DRIVE THIS CAR AT NIGHT, AND IT IS ABOUT TIME THAT HONDA REMEDY THE HEADLIGHT DESIGN SO THAT ONE CAN DRIVE THIS CAR SAFELY. I WISH I COULD PROVE THIS SIMPLE FACT TO SOMEONE, BUT NO ONE AT HONDA WILL TAKE ME UP ON THIS SIMPLE TEST TO PROVE THERE IS SOMETHING DRASTICALLY WRONG WITH THE HEADLIGHT DESIGN. I HAVE CONSIDERED AFTERMARKET HEADLIGHTS, BUT THIS IS SOMETHING THAT SHOULD BE SERIOUSLY ADDRESSED. I REALLY WONDER HOW MANY ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES HAVE OCCURRED FROM THIS PROBLEM. I HAVE BROUGHT THIS TO THE ATTENTION OF SEVERAL HONDA DEALERSHIPS (SAN ANTONIO AND SAN ANGELO), AND THEY JUST SUGGEST PUTTING IN A BRIGHTER TYPE BULB, WHICH HAS DONE NOTHING TO REMEDY. IT IS ENTIRELY THE DESIGN OF THE HEADLIGHTS. PLEASE, THIS IS A LEGITIMATE AND REAL SAFETY HAZARD, AND IT IS SOMETHING HONDA HAS BEEN IGNORING FOR YEARS ON SEVERAL OF THE CR-V YEAR MODELS. CALL ME [XXX]. BEEN COMPLAINING FOR YEARS, BUT FOR THE FIRST TIME, SOMEONE TOLD ME ABOUT REPORTING THIS TO YOU. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

AIR CONDITIONER WENT OUT. SEEMS COMMON FOR THESE CRV MODELS
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 HONDA CR-V. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HOT AIR EMITTED FROM THE AIR CONDITIONING VENTS. THE AIR CONDITIONING CLUTCH AND COIL WERE BELIEVED TO HAVE OVERHEATED AND FAILED. ONCE THE CLUTCH AND COIL COOLED DOWN, THE AIR CONDITIONER BEGAN TO FUNCTION CORRECTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED NOR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 71,000.

Transmission
Reports naming the automatic or manual transmission, including shifting behaviour, shudder, slipping and transmission control modules.
From owner reports, verbatim
I WAS DRIVING OUT OF A PARKING LOT OF AN OUTDOOR SHOPPING MALL, SUDDENLY THE CAR DID NOT MOVE AT ALL. I SHIFTED TO L1 TO SEE HOW IT WOULD REACT. NO MOVEMENT. SHIFTED TO L2, STILL THE CAR DID NOT BUDGE AT ALL. FINALLY, I SHIFTED TO R, THEN, IT MOVED BACKWARD. I PUT THE SHIFT INTO D, AND THEN O.K. I REMEMBER, IN THE PAST, THE CAR HESITATED TO START OUT AFTER A STOP AT INTERSECTIONS. I CONTACTED THE LOCAL DEALER. THEY SAY THEY CANNOT DO MUCH BECAUSE THE PROBLEM HAS TO BE REPLICATED TO DIAGNOSE IT. I TOLD THEM, I OR ANY ONE COULD REPLICATE THE PROBLEM. ANYWAY, I TOLD THEM I AM BRINGING IN MY CAR TOMORROW. BUT I AM AFRAID IF THE SAME PROBLEM HAPPENS ON THE BUSY STREET ON MY WAY TO THE DEALER. I WILL APPRECIATE TO LET ME KNOW IF ANY ONE HAD EXPERIENCED THE PROBLEM. IF NO ONE HAS REPORTED SO FAR, I WOULD LIKE THIS PROBLEM REGISTERED ON YOUR DATA BASE. THANK YOU. *KB
