Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.

Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

A warning about Hyundai😡😡😡: I have learned that Hyundai recalled almost half of а million vehicles for phantom braking. This is exactly what I have being complaining about for a year and a half, starting one month after purchase, concerning my 2025 Hybrid Elantra. It would suddenly drop the speed to 20mph, creating extremely dangerous situations. I have been bumped off by the dealership, Hyundai America, and Hyundai Worldwide. They did not know what the problem was and blamed it on me. Now, when the cause is known and I inquired, I was told that my car is not listed for this fix. This is outrageous. Previously they could not find what was wrong. Now they know, but Elantra is not being fixed. This is a break of warranty and should be either fixed, or covered by the lemon law, as I have asked since month after the purchase. It was my family's fourth Hyundai car (mostly due to the long warranty, and they were also decent cars), but I will NEVER ever buy any of these after the way we are treated.

Fire reported

While driving to work my engine of my Hyundai Elantra Hybrid caught fire. The fire was able to be put out but there are no active recalls currently on my vehicle. All of the safety sensors turned on and off and my car locked and would not move. I couldn't go anywhere it was stopped. I started seeing smoke coming out of the front and opened my hood to find a flame burning to the lower right-hand side of my engine. The flame was small, but I moved away and called 911. The flame grew and went through the hood toward the windshield. The interior was not damaged just the engine. The fire dept was able to neutralize the fire.

While being driven on a residential street, the vehicle suddenly displayed a 'Stop Safely' warning on the dashboard. Upon an attempted restart, the vehicle suffered a total electrical blackout and complete loss of propulsion power while in the middle of a live roadway. All internal and external lights, steering assistance, and power systems failed simultaneously. The vehicle was manufactured in 2025 and has been out of service since March 16th. The dealership (Napleton Downtown Hyundai) is attributing this total system collapse to 'bad fuel' to deny warranty coverage, despite the failure being a catastrophic high-voltage electrical shutdown. This incident created an immediate safety hazard for the driver and other motorists, leaving the vehicle stranded and unresponsive in traffic

HYBRID SYSTEM FAILURE ----- 2025 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid (blue trim) The instrument panel showed Hybrid System Failure, and the ENGINE DIED on the freeway at 70 mph. Luckily, I was able to pull to the right shoulder on a busy freeway. I tried restarting the car, but the instrument panel turned off after one second for the first two tries, and then nothing would turn on. I had it towed to Lithia Hyundai of Fresno on February 11, 2025. The car is still at the dealer being diagnosed and repaired for Hybrid System Failure with Total Power Loss. Extremely dangerous to have the engine cut out at 70 mph on a busy freeway.

Minor issue, but when driving this vehicle, I keep getting alerts asking if I want to take a coffee break. Unable to turn this feature off and it is very distracting, causing me to check screen at random times while I am driving when I should be focused on the road.

AIR BAGS

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has identified the presence of substandard and dangerous driver’s-side airbag inflators manufactured by Jilin Province Detiannuo Automobile Safety System Co., Ltd. (DTN). These inflators were not supplied, approved, or authorized by the vehicle manufacturers and have primarily been found in vehicles that previously experienced a crash and underwent airbag replacement using non-genuine parts. These dangerous inflators have ruptured during deployment, posing a serious risk of injury or death due to metal fragments entering the vehicle cabin. To date, Hyundai is aware of three people who have died while driving a Hyundai vehicle with one of these substandard replacement airbag inflators that deployed in what likely would have been a survivable crash. NHTSA has issued a public advisory urging vehicle owners and service professionals to have vehicles inspected if there is reason to believe that a non-genuine replacement airbag may have been installed. Vehicles with salvage or rebuilt titles, prior airbag deployments, or unknown repair histories may present a higher risk. NHTSA strongly cautions against self-inspection by vehicle owners and recommends inspection by trained technicians.

DTN DCS

AIR BAGS

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued an urgent safety advisory regarding dangerous, counterfeit driver‑side airbag inflators manufactured by Jilin Province Detiannuo Automobile Safety System Co., Ltd. (DTN), that have been identified in U.S. vehicles following prior crashes, theft, or non‑certified airbag replacements. These inflators are not approved for use, may rupture during deployment, and have caused serious injuries and fatalities. Please see attached announcement, provided by NHTSA, for more details.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING; FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL; FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: WARNINGS; LANE DEPARTURE: ASSIST; LANE DEPARTURE: WARNING

Some 2019MY and newer vehicles equipped with a front view camera may illuminate certain warning lights and trigger DTC C272246 fault code for the front camera. In the following cases, the front camera auto-calibration range may be exceeded while driving: • If the front camera is not properly installed and is completely or partially detached. • In case of excessive changes affecting the vehicle's balance (e.g., loading excessively heavy cargo in a specific location of the vehicle, or significant under-inflation of the tires). • Specific road conditions affecting the vehicle's balance (e.g., excessive road crown) This TSB provides instructions on how to service the vehicle when the front camera related warning light(s) are triggered due to system out of calibration (DTC_C272246).

26-HA-001H TSB

Some Elantra (CN7/CN7A), Elantra N (CN7 N) and Elantra Hybrid (CN7 HEV) vehicles may experience the following conditions: • Lack of airflow coming from the forward-facing center vents • Mode actuator not changing airflow direction after various inputs • Popping/snap noise when switching between different modes If any of the conditions above exist, follow the repair procedure in this bulletin to replace the ventilator lever and cam mode guide.

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
