2015 Jeep Cherokee Fuel system Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the fuel system system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Fuel system reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

The car has been suddenly lurching backward and forward in traffic/ while driving, moving forward and backwards unexpectantly and not accelerating at an expected rate, causing other vehicles almost to hit me about 4 times within 1 week starting last week around 12/8/25, because my vehicle is not moving at the expected rate during yielding, changing lanes, etc. I took it to the shop and reported this issue, and they informed me that this vehicle has serious oil leaks and multiple parts that have failed involving the oil filter housing, engine valve cover, engine intake manifold gasket, etc. I have attached a list of parts that have failed in this vehicle from the repair shop for your records and can make available the parts upon request. My repair shop has told me that they have had to repair MULTIPLE other cars of this make and model for the same reason/ failed parts across multiple years up to until about 2021, but that the company repaired it on more current models, which clearly indicates that this is a KNOWN issue for prior models. This company has an obligation to protect its customers and conduct a full recall on prior models to correct this issue, in order to prevent serious injury or death of the public! I trust you will investigate this matter thoroughly.

All Recalls for 2015 jeep Cherokee 2.4 wasn’t done properly and caused more damage. Transaxle harness, pscm, maniverter and more caused engine damage to block, which was supposed to be replaced during recall for oil consumption. Now dealer is wanting to charge me for damages pertaining to recalls and new engine block that wasn’t replaced during xb1 and x80 recall warranty. I was almost hit on highway from vehicle stalling out at highspeed and maniverter turning red from 20 minutes of driving from picking up from dealer after u90 recall was supposedly fixed. Constant dash notifications of throttle and shifter as well. I’ve already contacted legal advice and I just want my vehicle running properly, new vehicle or compensation. Everything on this vehicle needs replaced dealing with faulty pcm tcm bcm ecu pscm all harnesses practically entire vehicle.

Over several years Jeep has repeatedly stalled without warning. This safety concern has been addressed at both the dealership where the vehicle was purchased and an independent car repair facility. Regardless of the repairs done, the same stalling issue has continued.

The contact owns a 2015 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that there was an abnormal sound coming from under the hood while reversing. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the thermostat and canister purge valve needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired due to the costs; however, the vehicle remained at the dealer pending the repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 108,000.

We own and lease mostly Chrysler /Jeep products in our family. We currently have a Wrangler, Pacifica, Jeep Cherokee. Our 2015 Jeep Cherokee has shut down completely while driving 4 times. The first time this happened was a year ago and we thought it was a fluke. Recently it has happened 3 times so there is clearly an issue with this 2015 Jeep Cherokee and it is unsafe to drive until this matter is completely fixed or the car is replaced. We are fortunate that an accident did not occur during any of these times however the last incident came very close. Very frightening !! The vehicle is currently at Rockland Jeep Dealer and I am attaching the estimate we received which is over 5,000.00. We have replaced the battery, changed the oil and have been without this vehicle for almost 2 months. We are hoping that Chrysler will pick up this expense since there were many recalls regarding this matter.

The contact owns a 2015 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while driving approximately 70 MPH, the vehicle vibrated abnormally and then stalled. The contact stated that the power steering and brakes lost proper functionality. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact was able to coast off the roadway. The contact made numerous attempts to restart the vehicle and failed. The contact had the vehicle towed to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the high-pressure fuel pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 200,000.

Last July of 2022, my first issue was an electrical notice that caused the airbag and seatbelt sensor in the vehicle to continuously go off, which took several months to get fixed through the manufacturer of my Jeep Cherokee 2015. As of 2023, I have received two recall notices, and neither of which have been resolved since April of 2023. Since those notices, my check engine light has gone off and is getting repaired this week, there's been a leak inside the vehicle of a liquid spilling into the passenger side floor mat, and also the brakes have deteriorated quickly -- they were last repaired at 77,000 miles and are again experiencing issues at 99,000 miles. There is a specific manufacturer in my area (Salt Lake Valley Chrystler Dodge Jeep RAM on State Street in Salt Lake City, UT) that has been borderline negligent and straight up rude on multiple occasions.

A couple of issues are occurring and this is all over the internet as well and I have decided to file a complaint as this vehicle should be recalled. Most recently the car shuts off while driving and need to coast into the breakdown lane. The transmission shifts very rough as well as this model in addition the engine seems to eat the oil as well. I purchased the vehicle brand new and have consistently gotten oil changes, but a year ago when I brought this vehicle in the dealer advised I had no oil, but I got oil changes every 4-5K miles. I should not need to be pouring oil into the car. This is well known issue all over the internet with this engine. What happens is the car will shut off randomly when driving as a fail sale. In addition most recently the will shut off and there is oil in the engine, but it starts jerking the engine as if it is trying to change gears and then the car loses the ability to accelerate and actually deaccelerate. I have to pull over and the car will not drive. I have to turn the car off and let it sit for a minute or two and then turn it back on. This is highly dangerous as someone can smash into the back of the car while i am driving since the car loses power. I have brought the car in numerous times to the shop over the years due to the transmission/engine failures. This engine/transmission needs to be recalled as these cars should not be on the road. Most recently I brought it back to the dealer and they advised they could not replicate the problem. It is back in the shop today as well 5/31/23 as the incident occurred again 3 days after. I have some video I can email as well.

Nearly all of the warning lights came on suddenly at the same time. Service parking brake, service transmission, service antilock braking system, service forward collision system and more. The vehicle then starts to have trouble shifting and sometimes acceleration is gone completely. I had to coast over to shoulder on the freeway multiple times. Turning the vehicle off and restarting seems to help somewhat and allowed me to get the vehicle home. Sometimes acceleration is jumpy (slowing down then speeding up again). I have had the vehicle serviced 3 times for this issue. First time they stated it was fixed with a software update. Second time they replaced a sensor inside the transmission, and the third time they replaced the PTU. All of these repairs and the $1,000+ I have paid for the repairs have done nothing to address the issue.

When I go to put the the vehicle in park and reverse it wants to shift really hard, not really a shift but more of a jerk. It doesn’t happen every time but it does 50 percent of the time. There was this one time where i went to go put it in reverse and it wanted to rev more then usual. When it MAINLY shifts hard is when I first turn it on and start moving a couple feet it wants to fall on its face. We haven’t had any incidents in it yet but I wanted to see if I could get anything done before any. Me and my boyfriend travel a lot and when we are in traffic it has fallen on its face. There is a gas cap light that keeps coming on and I have replaced my gas cap 2 times.

REFERENCE THE COMPLAINT LISTED BELOW ( NHTSA ID 11270672 ) ON OCTOBER 24, 2019. I HAVE HAD THE EXACT SAME ISSUE/PROBLEM CONCERNING THE GAS/FUEL CAP SENSOR SINCE NOVEMBER 2016. MADE MULTIPLE ATTEMPTS OF HAVING IT FIXED AT LOCAL CHRYSLER JEEP DEALERSHIP WITH ZERO SUCCESS. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE FROM THE REFERENCED COMPLAINT BELOW IS THAT I HAVE NOT HAD A VAPOR TEST NOR HAVE I REPLACED MY GAS CAP BECAUSE I WAS TOLD BY THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT; VERBATIM : 'THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE THAT CAN NOT BE FIXED.' IN ADDITION; THE FUEL/GAS CAP ISSUE IS ONLY ONE OF SEVERAL ISSUES THAT I'VE ENCOUNTERED ALL WITH THE SAME RESPONSE FROM THE DEALERSHIP ' 'IT'S A KNOWN PROBLEM BUT WE CAN'T FIX IT'. I WILL NEVER PURCHASE A CHRYSLER BRANDED VEHICLE AGAIN. LESSON LEARNED AS THIS CHEROKEE IS 'AN EVEN SWAP' FOR MY ORIGINAL CHEROKEE THAT WAS BOTH NEWLY PURCHASED & DEAD (TRANSMISSION FAILURE) ALL WITHIN THE MONTH OF DECEMBER 2014. SO FOR THE OWNER IN CARY, NC WHO POSTED (SEE BELOW) ' YOU ARE NOT ALONE! ''-ORIGINAL COMPLAINT'- OCTOBER 24, 2019 NHTSA ID NUMBER: 11270672 COMPONENTS: ENGINE, UNKNOWN OR OTHER NHTSA ID NUMBER: 11270672 INCIDENT DATE JULY 17, 2017 CONSUMER LOCATION CARY, NC VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER [XXX] SUMMARY OF COMPLAINT CRASHNO FIRENO INJURIES0 DEATHS0 MY GAS CAP LIGHT HAS BEEN ON FOR 2 YEARS. I APPARENTLY AM THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS ISSUE AND HAVE BEEN TOLD THERE IS NOTHING THAT CAN BE DONE AS THEY NEED A FLASH TO RESET THE MOTHERBOARD. IN THE MEANTIME TO RULE THINGS OUT I HAD TO HAVE THE VAPOR TEST DONE AND REPLACE THE GAS CAP WHICH OF COURSE SOLVEE NOTHING. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

WHEN SLOWING DOWN TO YIELD OR A ROLL THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCES DELAYED SHIFTING RESULTING IN NO ACCELERATION FOR 2-3 SECONDS FOLLOWED BY A VERY HARD SHIFT RESULTING IN WHEEL SPIN WHICH CAN LEAVE THE VEHICLE IMMOBILE IN THE ROAD FOR ANOTHER 3 SECONDS. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT GOES OFF AND ON. HESITATION AND ACCELERATION ISSUES. WHEN PRESSING ON ACCELERATOR TRUCK DOESN'T GO AS IF STUCK IN GEAR THEN FINALLY LURCHES FORWARD UNEXPECTEDLY. VERY JERKY DURING GEAR CHANGES SIMILAR TO DRIVING A STICK SHIFT. TAKEN TO DEALERSHIP WHERE PURCHASED AND WAS TOLD TO BUY NEW BATTERY BUT THE SAME PROBLEMS CONTINUE TO HAPPEN. DIAGNOSTICS AT DEALERSHIP GAVE NO INDICATION AS TO HOW THESE SAFETY ISSUES CAN BE RESOLVED.

ENGINE DIES WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD & AFTER 10-15 MINUTES VEHICLE WILL START. THIS HAS HAPPENED NUMEROUS TIMES & EACH TIME I HAVE BROUGHT IT BACK TO NORMANDIN JEEP IN SAN JOSE, CA. OF COURSE IT IS RUNNING EACH TIME WHEN I GET TO THE DEALERSHIP & I ALWAYS GET THE SAME STORY. LOW OIL OR OIL PRESSURE. I CURRENTLY HAVE LESS THAN 40,000 MILES ON THE JEEP & MY FIRST INCIDENT BEGAN WITH 15,000 MILES ......... THEN AGAIN & AGAIN & AGAIN. I LIVE IN SILICON VALLEY & HAVE A ONE YEAR OLD SON. THE FREEWAYS ARE BUSY AND THIS HAS BECOME A DANGEROUS SITUATION. ACCORDING TO MY ONLINE RESEARCH ........ THIS IS AN INHERENT PROBLEM WITH THE JEEP CHEROKEE ..........BUT ........ THE DEALERSHIP DOES NOT WANT TO ADMIT THIS. ON MY LAST VISIT ABOUT A MONTH AGO (LESS THAN 40,000 ON ODOMETER) THEY (NORMANDIN) TOLD ME THE PROBLEM WAS WITH THE OIL PRESSURE SENDING UNIT & THIS WOULD NOT BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY ..........EVEN THOUGH THIS ISSUE BEGAN A COUPLE YEARS AGO. SERVICE MANAGER SAID THAT BECAUSE THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING PROBLEM .......... HE WOULD REPLACE THE UNIT AND CHARGE ME ONLY $100. WITH A JOB & A ONE YEAR OLD CHILD ..... I CERTAINLY DID NOT HAVE THE TIME TO ARGUE. THEY REPLACED THE UNIT & FILLED MY JEEP WITH OIL AND I LEFT THE DEALERSHIP. WELL ............ MY JEEP JUST STRANDED ME AGAIN . SAME PROBLEM & I KEEP CALLING THE DEALERSHIP (FOR THE PAST 5 DAYS) AND THE SERVICE MANAGER HAS NOT RETURNED MY CALL. I SIMPLY DO NOT HAVE THE TIME FOR THIS. PLUS I AM SCARED TO BE ON THE ROAD TO MY WORK WITH MY YOUNG SON IN THE BACK SEAT (I DROP HIM OFF AT DAY CARE). I WRITE THE NHTSA BECAUSE I'M AWARE THAT THERE ARE SO MANY PEOPLE WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS ISSUE. ONLY DIFFERENCE IS THAT PERHAPS THEIR LOCAL JEEP DEALER REPAIRS THE PROBLEM ............ WHETHER IT BE WITH A NEW ENGINE OR WHATEVER. CAN YOU PLEASE HELP ?

WHILE IN MOTION, THE VEHICLE SHUTS OFF WITHOUT WARNING. A MESSAGE ON THE DASH SAYS PUT THE CAR IN PARK TO START. THE CAR CONSUMES LARGE AMOUNTS OF SYNTHETIC OIL, WHICH SHOULD LAST UP TO 6 MONTHS BUT ONLY LASTS BETWEEN 700-1000 MILES PER QUART. THE OIL LIGHT DOES NOT COME ON INDICATING THAT THE OIL IS LOW. IT FLASHES ACROSS THE SCREEN TOO FAST FOR THE DRIVER TO SEE THE WARNING. WHEN THE OIL IS LOW, THE CAR BEGINS TO SHUT ITSELF OFF WHILE IN MOTION. THIS HAS HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING AT BOTH HIGH AND LOW RATES OF SPEED ON CITY STREETS AND A HIGHWAY DURING RUSH OUR TRAFFIC, NEARLY CAUSING A COLLISION WITH VEHICLES BEHIND ME.

THE LIGHTS FLASHED AND THEN THE A MESSAGE COMES ON THE DASH SAYING TO SHIFT THE CAR IN TO PARK. I HAVE TO SHIFT IT IN TO PARK AND TURN THE CAR OFF COMPLETELY AND THEN BACK TURN IT BACK ON.

WHILE DRIVING IN A 50 MPH ZONE ON A MAJOR ROADWAY IN THE TOWN I RESIDE IN MY VEHICLE DECIDED IT NO LONGER WANT TO GO. EVEN WITH MY FOOT ON THE GAS PEDAL I COULD SEE THE NEEDLE FOR REVS MOVING WHEN I PUSHED THE PEDAL, BUT THE CAR WOULDN'T MOVE. I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE GAS AND TRIED THE PEDAL AGAIN. SAME RESULT THE CAR WOULD REV BUT NOT GO ASIDE FROM A STUTTERING /LIGHT JERKING, ALMOST AS IF IT DIDN'T WANT TO CHANGE GEARS. I HAVE HAD ROUGH SHIFTS FROM THE DAY WE DROVE THIS OFF THE LOT. I WAS TOLD TIME AND TIME AGAIN THAT IT WAS PART OF THE BREAK IN PERIOD AND THERE WERE NO CODES SPITTING OUT UNTIL THIS PAST SUMMER WHERE I GOT THE SERVICE SHIFTER PROBLEM A SECOND TIME THAT WAS ACCOMPANIED WITH SERVICE 4 WHEEL DRIVE. I NEVER HAVE USED THIS VEHICLE OFF ROAD AND MAYBE TWICE FOR VIRGINIA SNOW. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THERE WAS A RECALL, WHICH THEY HAVE FIXED. BUT NOW WE ARE BACK TO THE SAME SYMPTOMS ONLY NOW THE VEHICLE WANTS TO STOP FORWARD MOTION WHILE DRIVING. IT IS AT THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY ARE SAYING IT WAS A WIRING ISSUE. THIS VEHICLE IS NOT SAFE. HOW MANY PEOPLE NEED TO BE IN THIS VEHICLE BEFORE AN ACCIDENT HAPPENS. LUCKILY FOR ME I WAS THE ONLY CAR ON THAT SECTION OF THE ROAD BUT IF I WASN'T I WOULD HAVE BEEN REAR ENDED ESPECIALLY DURING RUSH HOUR.
