2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Tires & wheels Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the tire or wheel system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Tires & wheels reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Crash reported

The contact owned a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee equipped with Prinx Tires, Tire Line: High Country RT, Tire Size: LT265/65/R16, DOT Number: N/A. The contact stated that, while his son was driving at an undisclosed speed during light snowfall and attempting to reduce speeds, the vehicle lost traction. As a result, the driver lost control of the vehicle and slid off the roadway, only coming to a complete stop after rolling once down an embankment and colliding with a tree. The air bags did not deploy. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a storage facility and deemed a total loss by the contact's insurance provider. A police report was filed, and injuries were reported. The driver did not receive immediate medical attention but later transported himself to a chiropractor and was treated for stiffness. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 24T014000 (Tires), and the VIN was included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and a case was opened. The failure mileage was unknown.

I HAD A SLOW LEAK IN MY REAR TIRES , SO I WENT TO GET THEM PLUGGED. I WAS TOLD THAT THE RIMS HAD RUSTED THROUGH THE BACK TIRES AND PUNCTURED THE TIRES. I COULD NOT GET INTO A JEEP DEALERSHIP FOR TWO WEEKS SO MY MECHANIC ORDERED A NEW RIM (JEEP PART) AND TWO NEW TIRES SO THAT I COULD DRIVE SAFELY. JEEP REFUSES TO ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY BASED ON THE FACT THAT I HAD MY OWN MECHANIC REPLACE THE TIRES. I WAS TOLD THAT I SHOULD HAVE WAITED TWO WEEKS. HOWEVER, I WAS NOT GOING TO RISK DRIVING ON A FAULTY RIM AND TIRES. I STILL HAVE THE RUSTED OUT RIMS AND PUNCTURED TIRES THAT JEEP REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE. *JB

THE CONSUMER HAD THE VEHICLE IN THE SHOP ALMOST 10 TIMES FOR REPAIRS. THE CONSUMER ARGUED THAT THE POWER STEERING WAS OUT OF ORDER AND SHE WAS UNABLE TO STEER THE VEHICLE IN REVERSE. THE CONSUMER WAS VERY DISSATISFIED WITH THE DEALERSHIP. *AK *CB THE VEHICLE ALSO EXPERIENCED THREE TIRE BLOWOUTS. THE CONSUMER WAS TOLD THE PROBLEM WAS CAUSED BY THE GEAR BOX, THERE WAS A RECALL REGARDING THE ISSUE, HOWEVER THE CONSUMERS VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE FRONT PINION SEAL LEAKED. *JB
