2010 Volkswagen Jetta Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2010 Volkswagen Jetta, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

I WAS DRIVING DOWN A BUSY ROAD WHEN I SAW SMOKE COMING OUT FROM UNDER MY HOOD OF THE CAR. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER ONTO A SIDE STREET AND POPPED THE HOOD. THE ENGINE WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES. I THEN PULLED MY PANICKED 4 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER OUT OF HER CAR SEAT AND TOOK HER ACROSS THE STREET. WE THEN CALLED 9-11 AND THE SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT AND FIRE DEPARTMENT SHOWED UP TO PUT OUT THE FIRE. I HAD MY CAR TOWED TO A MECHANIC WHERE HE SAYS THE FIRE WAS CAUSED BY A FUEL LINE. THERE IS A RECALL FOR THE SAME YEAR AND MODEL FOR MY CAR BUT IT IS NOT FOR MY VIN# EVEN THOUGH IT'S THE SAME CAUSE AS MY CAR'S FIRE!

When you turn on the vehicle, the abs and traction light illuminates. The light that says "BRAKE" also illuminates and the vehicle beeps 3 times. When driving the vehicle, the red light "BRAKE" flashes constantly, while the ABS and traction control light remains illuminated but no flashes. The dealership says it's a fault ABS module and Hydraulic Pump Assembly. I researched and found a Volkswagen safety recall code: 45F2 (published March 17, 2017) that seems very applicable to my vehicle. Safety concerns include but are not limited to the following: loss of vehicle control, failure to brake properly, auto engagement of brakes not by the driver, etc. All safety concerns may cause my life or the life of another individual.

I HAVE A 2010 VW JETTA TDI WITH DSG AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. VEHICLE HAS 15K MILES ON IT THUS FAR. WHEN PULLING OUT ONTO A STREET FROM A COMPLETE STOP THERE IS A DEFINITE AND HAZARDOUS HESITATION BEFORE THE VEHICLE WILL MOVE FORWARD. THIS ISSUE EXISTED SINCE THE CAR WAS NEW. SOMETIMES THE HESITATION IS VERY SHORT BEFORE THE CAR WILL MOVE, OTHER TIMES IT TAKES THE CAR A MOMENT AS IF THE CAR HAS TO "THINK" ABOUT WHAT IT IS SUPPOSED TO DO. WHEN I PUSH THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL THE CAR JUST SITS THERE! THE LONGER HESITATIONS ARE FAIRLY FREQUENT AND ARE A DANGER TO OTHER VEHICLES, MY FAMILY AND MYSELF. I DON'T TRUST THIS CAR TO BE ABLE TO QUICKLY MOVE OUT OF HARM'S WAY IN AN EMERGENCY AND ALSO DON'T TRUST IT TO PULL ONTO A STREET IN FRONT OF ANY OTHER VEHICLE NO MATTER HOW FAR AWAY THE OTHER VEHICLE IS DOWN THE ROAD. IT'S JUST NOT SAFE TO DO SO! VW SHOULD BE FORCED TO ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM AND PROVIDE A FIX FOR THIS COMMON ISSUE AND COMPLAINT THAT CAN BE READ ABOUT ON VARIOUS VW FORUMS ALL OVER THE INTERNET. NO INJURIES YET FROM THIS ISSUE WITH MY VEHICLE BECAUSE I KNOW BETTER THAN TO TRY TO PULL OUT INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC. *TR

DOOR LOCKS STOPPED WORKING FOR MY VW JETTA S 2.5 L. WHEN I PRESS THE CAR KEY TO LOCK THE DOOR, IT GIVES SOUND THAT EVERYTHING IS LOCKED. ONE DAY TO MY HORROR, I SAW SOMEONE OPENING MY CAR AT NIGHT. I IMMEDIATELY RANG ALARM, WENT TO MY CAR AND CHECKED EVERY DOOR TO FIND THAT THEY ARE NOT GETTING LOCKED. NO MANUAL LOCKS FOR THIS VEHICLE TOO. THIS REALLY QUESTIONS THE SAFETY OF THE VEHICLE. I TOOK IT TO VW SERVICE. THEY TOLD THAT MECHANICAL PART OF LATCH FAILED. THEY TOLD THAT SINCE MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL PARTS COME TOGETHER BOTH WERE REPLACED AT A COST OF 670 BUCKS. THAT'S TOO MUCH FOR A SINGLE DOOR.

Abs and stability control became inoperative at around 50mph. It's a 55mph road thats heavily trafficked since its near a port. I had to stop the car on the side of the road since we almost crashed into an 18 wheeler. Fortunately we were close to home I drove the car at a reasonable speed just to get home. After that incident we have stopped using this vehicle since it gets even more dangerous every time, especially when it rains. Since then brake light has come on and hydraulic and suspension has been bad. This happened last year when pandemic was still full force and without a vehicle. Had to save and buy a more reliable vehicle for our own safety. I know this is a really good car but i really hope y’all can help me fix this since it’s really not the consumer’s fault. I’ve checked there is a recall for this but my “Jetta” is not in those vehicles that were recalled. I really cant drive the vehicle therefore i have no use for it. Please let me know if something could be done since i wouldn’t like to pay out of pocket for something that could be done by the manufacturer and even save our and others life’s in the future when more vehicle owners come forward. Thank you for your time.

LARGE SPLIT IN THE FRONT RIGHT OUTSIDE SIDEWALL DISCOVERED. UPON INSPECTION, GAP WAS VERY NOTICABLE. CHECK THE REMAINING THREE TIRES AND NO EVIDENCE OF THE SAME. TIRES HAVE APPROXIMATELY 15,000 MILES. WE DECIDED TO REPLACE ALL FOUR TIRES TO KEEP THE VEHICLE "BALANCED". NEW TIRES INSTALLED AND WAS ASKED TO COME IN TO THE SHOP TO SEE THE OTHER THREE TIRES. ALL THREE HAD SPLITS IN THE SIDEWALL FACING TO THE INSIDE, WHICH COULD NOT HAVE BEEN SEEN UNLESS EACH TIRE WAS PULLED OFF THE VEHICLE. I ASKED TO RETAIN AT LEAST TWO OF THE TIRES IN MY POSSESSION, WHICH I HAVE NOW. I ALSO HAVE PICTURES OF THE SPLITS THAT I HOPE I WILL BE ABLE TO FORWARD SOMEWHERE BEFORE I COMPLETE THE COMPLAINT. ALTHOUGH THERE WAS NO INJURYS, IT COULD HAVE BEEN VERY CATASTOPHIC IF THE TIRES BLEW OUT AT FREEWAY SPEEDS. *TR

MY 2010 VW TDI SPORTWAGON EATS UP THE INSIDE OF THE TIRES, VERY QUICKLY. I JUST PURCHASED MY FIFTH SET OF TIRES FOR A CAR WITH LESS THAN 70,000 MILES ON IT. I'VE HAD THE ALIGNMENT CHECKED THREE TIMES, AND IT CONTINUALLY SHOWS TO BE WITHIN SPECS. THE FIRST TWO TIMES, I HAD A VW DEALERSHIP CHECK THE ALIGNMENT, AND BOTH TIMES THEY TOLD ME THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. I JUST HAD A PRIVATE MECHANIC CHECK THE ALIGNMENT, AND HE SAID I COULDN'T HAVE A MORE PERFECT ALIGNMENT, ACCORDING TO VW'S SPECS. THE LAST SET OF TIRES I PURCHASED WERE RATED FOR 55,000 MILES, BUT I ONLY GOT 15,000 OUT OF THEM BEFORE THE INSIDES WERE WORN DOWN INTO THE BELTS. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION SINCE THE REST OF THE TIRE LOOKS NEW, AND UNLESS YOU GET THE CAR UP ON A LIFT, OR LAY DOWN ON THE GROUND TO DELIBERATELY LOOK AT THE INSIDE OF THE TIRES, YOU CANNOT SEE THE DAMAGE TAKING PLACE, AND PLACING THE OPERATOR IN A SITUATION WHERE A BLOW-OUT CAN OCCUR WITHOUT WARNING. PLUS, NOT TO MENTION THE EXTREMELY HIGH COST OF TIRE PURCHASES TO OPERATE THIS VEHICLE. *TR

I BOUGHT MY 2010 JETTA USED IN JUNE 2013. A MONTH AFTER I PURCHASED IT, I NOTICED THE A/C WAS NOT WORKING. I RETURNED IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY CONFIRMED THAT THE A/C COMPRESSOR WASN'T WORKING. THEY INSTALLED A NEW ONE AND I DIDN'T HAVE A PROBLEM UNTIL 8/7/13. I WENT OUT TO START MY CAR AND NOTICED I HAD A LIGHT ON MY DASHBOARD. I GOT OUT OF THE CAR AND NOTICED MY RIGHT FRONT PASSENGER SIDE HEADLIGHT OUT. I WALKED AROUND AND NOTICED THE DRIVERS SIDE REAR TAIL LIGHT WAS ALSO OUT. I GOT HOME AND WHEN I SHUT THE CAR OFF AND TURNED IT BACK ON, THE LIGHT ON THE DASH WAS OUT, AND ALL MY EXTERIOR LIGHTS WERE WORKING. IT WAS AROUND THIS TIME I NOTICED A BURNING SMELL WHENEVER I EXITED THE CAR, BUT I COULDN'T' PINPOINT WHERE IT WAS COMING FROM. I DIDN'T HAVE ANOTHER ISSUE UNTIL 10/25/14 WHEN I WAS VISITING FRIENDS 30 MILES AWAY. I WENT TO LEAVE, AND WHEN I STARTED MY CAR I ONCE AGAIN HAD THE LIGHT ON THE DASH, SO I GOT OUT AND NOTICED THE SAME LIGHTS WERE ONCE AGAIN OUT. I HAD TO DRIVE ON THE HIGHWAY LIKE THIS, BUT THANKFULLY WHILE I WAS DRIVING THEY ALL CAME BACK ON. THE CAR WAS FINE UNTIL 12/14/13 WHEN I WENT OUT TO START MY CAR IN THE MORNING AND ONCE AGAIN THE SAME LIGHTS WERE OUT. THE LAST TIME I HAD AN ISSUE WITH THIS WAS 1/7/14, IN THE MIDDLE OF A BLIZZARD. I GOT OUT OF WORK AND STARTED MY CAR TO CLEAR SNOW OFF IT, AND EVERYTHING WAS FINE. IT WASN'T UNTIL I TURNED THE HEADLIGHTS ON THAT I NOTICED THE LIGHT ON THE DASH WAS ON INDICATING I HAD A LIGHT OUT SOMEWHERE. I GOT OUT AND NOTICED THAT IN ADDITION TO THE SAME HEADLIGHT AND TAIL LIGHT BEING OUT, THE LICENSE PLATE LIGHTS WERE ALSO OUT. BY THE TIME I COULD GET IN THE CAR THEY WERE ALL WORKING AGAIN. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY CONFIRMED THE 30 AMP FUSE HAD OVERHEATED AND CAUSED THE FUSEBOX TO MELT (HENCE THE BURNING SMELL). $500 LATER MY CAR IS HOPEFULLY FIXED. THANKFULLY THE CAR DIDN'T BURN TO THE GROUND. *TR
