2022 Volkswagen Taos Airbags Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the airbag system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Airbags reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

The car is telling me things are not available such as airbags, blind spot, the rear warning and the tire pressure monitoring system. As well as is has the fuel injector problem that VW has already extended the warranty on.

A/c drain clogged resulting in a backup of water to start leaking into the vehicle and steadily dripping onto the airbag module. The dealer did replicate the issue and are repairing. The airbag light illuminated and then the seatbelt light and chime began a couple of days later. Poorly placed safety device module.

On two occasions our Taos, when put in drive rolled backwards on a slight grade when the brake was released. The dealership says they cannot replicate the problem and suggests waiting 1.5 to 3 seconds after shifting to drive before releasing the brake. I don't think this is standard procedure, at least in any car I've ever driven and I've never heard of such a procedure in any car. In addition, the airbag light on the dash is currently on. The dealership diagnosed the problem as a damaged wire under the passenger seat. I inspected the wire and found a light gauge wire extending from the floorboard to the bottom of the passender seat, which is damaged, for reasons unknown, however is glaringly unprotected and vulnerable.

UNKNOWN The vehicle lost all functionality and did not respond to any commands/requests made by the driver until railroad tracks caused the vehicle to stop and all side airbags to deploy. My girlfriend and myself were at fear for our lives as google maps was attempting to take us unto a bridge when the vehicle became unresponsive while driving. Consequently, we had to choose hard soil as the brakes and steering would not react to any of the drivers commands. I received a parcel of mail about the recall 2 days after the accident in the mail. The problem has not been confirmed by a manufacturer, the police, insurance reps or any others as Progressive auto insurance has still not been to the car to investigate since being at the body shop on May 30th, 2023 when this accident occurred and the insurance claim was made. Progressive keeps telling me to be patient when I call for an update. Not until July 6th, 2023 when they informed me that this will now need to go to a Product Manager due to a recall on the vehicle. When I search my VIN on the NHTSA and VW website, it says recalled vehicle. The independent car shop that the towing service towed the vehicle to claims that they can not look at it until Progressive comes to investigate. There were no warning lamps, nor messages nor other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. The first appearance of the problem came via mail parcel on the evening of June 1st, 2023, days after the undiagnosed accident.

Crash reported

Vehicle was involved in a front end collision with left front impact. Damage spread across front of vehicle. Air bags did not deploy. Vehicle has been having electrical issues recently. Head unit will do “hard reset” while driving disabling all safety features. Car also will alert fob not present after vehicle has been started and is in motion. Other times fob will unlock doors but will get alert message that fob is not found in vehicle. Alerted dealership and manufacture but never received a response other than the dealership saying “no codes have been stored” and that they were unable to help me from there.

I was driving down the interstate on 6/24/2022 with ACC turned on and was in traffic. The semi truck in front of me came to a complete stop, but my VW Taos did not stop or slow down, so I had to intervene in order to prevent an accident. After I came to a complete stop, my vehicle started beeping, flashing errors on the dashboard for every safety system on my car including the Airbags, Traction Control, Anti-lock Brakes, all Safety Sensors, Cruise Control, and something called Brake Booster. It stayed like this for about 10 minutes. After moving more, traffic came to a complete stop again, so I took the opportunity to turn my car off and restart it, and the warnings came up again. After 5-10 more minutes, the errors finally cleared off my dashboard. This made me very concerned that I would not be protected if I were in an accident. This is the third time my vehicle has done this since owning it.

I just returned my leased 2017 Tiguan and leased a 2022 Taos. The Taos does not have a front passenger seat height adjustment. When I test drove the Taos, the tall vw salesperson was sitting in the front passenger seat while I was driving and my girlfriend was sitting in the back seat. The VW salesperson did not tell me that there is no front passenger seat height adjustment. My girlfriend cannot see over the dashboard when sitting in the front passenger seat. I purchased a seat cushion that raises her 4 inches but now the front passenger airbag light will not turn off so if we are in a car accident the driver airbag will deploy but the front passenger seat airbag will not deploy. I need to have the front passenger seat replaced with a front passenger seat that has a manual height adjustment or I need a different car. Can you please help me? I have been a lifetime loyal customer of VW Porsche Audi and do not understand why a manual front passenger seat height adjustment would not be included in any of your products. The VW salespeople need to make sure that customers know that there is no front passenger seat height adjustment prior to purchasing the Taos S and the Taos SE. The Tiguan S models that I had all had front passenger seat height adjustment. Can you please help me? Thank you.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers.
