Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.

Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

EQUIPMENT; STEERING

Apr 1, 2014
2,827 units potentially affected
The defect: Ohlins Racing AB (Ohlins) is recalling certain steering dampers kits manufactured with an incorrectly machined bracket. These dampers were sold for use as aftermarket equipment on Yamaha R1, R6, and FZ6, Suzuki TL1000 R and GSX1300R, Honda CB600RR, and Ducati Monster 1000, 748, 848, 916, 996, and 998 motorcycles. Also included are universal steering damper kits with part numbers SD 000 through SD 005. The affected brackets may crack.
The risk: If there is a crack in the steering bracket, at low speeds it may cause the steering to lock, leading to personal injury or a crash.
The remedy: Ohlins will notify the distributors and provide their customers with a new bracket. The recall began in November 2013. Owners may contact Ohlins USA at 1-828-692-4525. Note: This recall is an expansion of recall 13E-034.

I ALMOST DROPPED THE BIKE WITH MY SON ON THE BIKE WITH ME IN A INTERSECTION AND WAS ALMOST STRUCK BY ANOTHER VEHICLE DUE TO THE LOAF IN THROTTLE IN FIRST GEAR. THE BIKE STUMBLES AND MISFIRES FROM IDLE UP TILL AROUND 2000 RPMS. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES. I HAVE NOTIFIED YAMAHA DIRECTLY WITH NO HELP. THEY STARTED CHANGING OUT THE COMPUTERS IN THE BIKES THEN THEY STOPPED. I JUST BOUGHT THE BIKE WITH THE EXTENDED WARRANTY. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM ESPECIALLY HAVING MY CHILD ON THE BIKE WHEN THIS TOOK PLACE. WE WERE LUCKY THAT WE BARELY WERE MISSED BY A CAR DUE TO THE BIKE STUMBLING AND SHIFT OFF IN THE INTERSECTION AS I WAS MAKING A LEFT HAND TURN. IT TOOK EVERYTHING IN ME TO PREVENT MY SON FROM BEING STRUCK BY THE ONCOMING VEHICLE. THIS IS A MAJOR PROBLEM WITH THE 07 AND 08 MODELS. THERE ARE FEW COMPLAINTS PROBABLY DUE TO THE OTHER OWNERS DIED ON THIS BIKE BEFORE BEING ABLE TO FILE A COMPLAINT. WE WERE ON A CITY STREET AT A INTERSECTION. AS I WENT IN MOTION THE BIKE STALLED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSECTION AND ALMOST HIT US BOTH KILLED. THEY NEED TO RECALL THESE BIKE AND PERMANENTLY FIX THEM. *TR

2007 AND 2008 YAMAHA R1 MOTORCYCLES HAVE FAULTY ECU WHICH CAUSES BIKE TO STALL WHEN COASTING OR STOPPING AND LAG WHEN ACCELERATING AT CERTAIN RPM RANGES. THIS CREATES A DANGEROUS SITUATION FOR BOTH THE RIDER AND OTHER MOTOR VEHICLES IN THE VICINITY. YAMAHA MOTOR CORPORATION HAS BEEN MADE AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM AND INITIALLY EXCHANGED FAULTY ECU'S AT NO CHARGE BUT QUICKLY STOPPED DOING THIS. I HAVE BEEN IN CONTACT WITH THE MANUFACTURE AND WITH THE LOCAL DEALERSHIPS, BOTH WHEN I WAS UNDER WARRANTY AND AFTER IT HAD EXPIRED, AND HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE. *TR

2007 YAMAHA YZF-R1. MANUFACTURER DEFECT THAT CAUSES THE INTAKE VALVE IN THE NUMBER 4 CYLINDER TO RUB ON THE GUIDE AND CAUSES THE VALVE TO BREAK OFF INTO THE CYLINDER. I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO CATCH IT EARLY AND TOOK IT TO MY REPAIR GUY. HE DISASSEMBLED THE HEAD AND FOUND THE BAD VALVE. SENT IT OUT TO BE MACHINED AND THE MACHINIST WAS UNABLE TO GET A VALVE GUIDE TO PRESS IN DUE TO THE BAD MACHINING FROM THE FACTORY. HE THEN HAD TO MACHINE IT OUT AND REPLACE WITH A DIFFERENT GUIDE. I CALLED YAMAHA WHEN THIS WAS HAPPENING AND THEY TOLD ME THAT NO ONE ELSE HAD REPORTED A PROBLEM LIKE THIS. I LATER LEARNED THAT THEY DO KNOW ABOUT IT AND IT IS A RECURRING PROBLEM FOUND IN MANY OF THE 2007 R1'S PRIMARILY THOSE STAMPED 02/07 ON THE VIN. I CALLED YAMAHA BACK AND THEY SAID THERE WAS NOTHING THAT THEY WOULD DO SINCE THE WORK WAS ALREADY DONE AND IT WAS NOT UNDER WARRANTY. MORE INFORMATION CAN BE FOUND ON THE R1 FORUM UNDER THE MECHANICAL HELP THREAD. TITLED RECALL ON 07/08 SHOULD THEY? CAN WE PUSH THIS? I FIRST NOTICED THAT THE BIKE WAS LOSING A LITTLE POWER AND THEN IT BEGAN TO GET WORSE. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 YAMAHA YZFR1 MOTORCYCLE. THE CONTACT STATED WHEN DRIVING THERE WAS AN ABNORMAL TICKING COMING FROM THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER ADVISED THAT THE NOISE WAS NORMAL. THE CONTACT STATED THE NOISE PROGRESSED AND THE VEHICLE WOULD SPORADICALLY BACKFIRE WITH LIMITED POWER AND PRESSURE. THE CONTACT BELIEVED THE FAILURE TO BE CAUSED BY THE VALVE STEM WHICH WAS PLACED INCORRECTLY AND COULD POTENTIALLY BREAK. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AND THE CONTACT WAS NO LONGER DRIVING THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 7,000.

PURCHASED 2007 YAMAHA YZFR1 LAST SEPTEMBER. THE BIKE EXHIBITED A LAG IN THE THROTTLE AROUND 5,000 RPM, AND THE ENGINE WILL ALSO STALL AT RANDOM, USUALLY AT THE WORST TIME. THIS BIKE HAS STALLED AT LEAST 20 TIMES AT INTERSECTIONS, AND STALLED ANOTHER 6 TIMES JUST YESTERDAY! THE THROTTLE LAG ISSUE HAS BEEN FIXED BY A DEALER. THE STALL HAS NOT BEEN FIXED. THE STALL PROBLEM SCARES ME. IT MAY LEAD TO MY DEATH!!! YAMAHA NEEDS TO FIX THIS NOW! *TR

HAS EXTREME THROTTLE LAG IN SECOND GEAR AT AROUND 5500 RPM. PROBLEM ISN'T PRESENT EVERYTIME, BUT CAN BE DUPLICATED BY PUTTING THE BIKE INTO SECOND GEAR AND STAYING AT 5500 RPM FOR 1 TO 2 SECONDS AND THEN APPLYING GENEROUS THROTTLE. A LAG USUALLY AROUND 3 SECONDS AFTER POWER APPLICATION CAN BE FELT. IT HAS CAUSED ME TO ALMOST BE INVOLVED IN 2 ACCIDENTS DUE TO THIS ISSUE. AT THAT RPM AND GEAR SETTING THE BIKE IS UNSAFE DUE TO THE LACK OF THROTTLE RESPONSE AND CAN CAUSE AN EXTREMELY UNSAFE SITUATION ON THE PUBLIC ROADS FOR NOT ONLY THE MOTORCYCLIST BUT FOR OTHER MOTORISTS AS WELL. *TR

MY NEW 2007 YAMAHA YZF R1 HAS A SEVERE "LAG" WHEN RIDING AT 5500 RPM'S IN 2ND GEAR. EVERY TIME I GET ON THE ROAD TO RIDE I EXPERIENCE THIS PROBLEM. I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED AT YAMAHA'S NON RESPONSIVE ATTITUDE WITH THIS ISSUE. I WANT THE PROBLEM FIXED. I HAVE CONTACTED MY DEALER ABOUT THE ISSUE AND FOR SOME REASON I AM JUST BRUSHED OFF AND THEY JUST RESPOND WITH, "WE WILL GET BACK TO YOU" . *JB

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
