Recalls, owner-reported complaints, investigations and safety data

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

The risk: A disabled passenger air bag increases the risk of injury in the event of a crash.
The remedy: Audi will notify owners, and dealers will install cable ties to the harness, free of charge. The recall began September 9, 2019. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Audi's number for this recall is 74D9.

Crash reported

I AM DISABLED, BUT I COULD NOT FIND A VEHICLE IN STOCK WITH ALL THE SAFETY FEATURES TO HELP ME DRIVE AND BE PROTECTED. SINCE THESE ARE BASICALLY SOFTWARE AND SOME INEXPENSIVE HARDWARE, I ASSUMED THAT THE FEATURES COULD BE UPGRADED MUCH LIKE COMPUTERS. I ASKED THE DEALER AND AUDI CUSTOMER SERVICE IF THEY COULD ADD THE FEATURES TO ME NEW CAR. THEY SAID IT COULDN'T BE DONE. LATER I DID FIND PARTS IN GERMANY, BUT THE DEALER WOULDN'T INSTALL THEM (I.E. BUY A NEW CAR AND LOOSE $5,000 OR MORE DOLLARS). I BELIEVE MODERN AUTOS SHOULD BE MADE EASILY UPGRADEABLE FOR SAY 3 YEARS AFTER PURCHASE. THIS WOULD HELP PEOPLE LIKE MYSELF TO HAVE BETTER AND SAFER DRIVABILTY. BTW BOEING SAFETY FEATURE, MACS, IN THE 737MAX AIRPLANES THAT KILLED OVER 300 PEOPLE WERE ONLY INSTALLED AS AN ADDITIONAL OPTION AT COST. MANY OF THE AIRLINES DID NOT TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY AND DID NOT ORDER THE FEATURE OR TRAIN ENOUGH, SO THE SAFETY FEATURE HAS TO BE INSTALLED AND THE PILOTS TRAINED TO USE MACS. PLEASE MAKE THESE CARS UPGRADABLE SO WE CAN GET FRONT CAMERAS, SIDE DETECTION, LANE DETECTION, CRASH DETECTION, BLIND SPOT DETECTION IN EVERY CAR. SAVE A FEW LIVES.. IT WILL MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD.

UPON STARTING THE CAR, THE VEHICLE INFORMATION SYSTEM SHOWS A MESSAGE THAT AUDI PRE SENSE IS NOT WORKING AND THE VEHICLE MUST BE TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED SERVICE CENTER IMMEDIATELY. THE VEHICLE APPEARS TO BE WORKING FINE, BUT IF PRE SENSE IS NOT WORKING IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE SEAT BELTS WILL TIGHTEN AND THE AIRBAG COULD GO OFF IF IT MALFUNCTIONS. THE AUDI DEALERSHIP SAYS THAT IT MAY BE NOTHING AND IT MAY RESET ITSELF. THE CAR HAS 12000 MILES ON IT. THIS IS A PROBLEM. I SAW ONLINE THAT A BUNCH OF OTHER AUDI OWNERS HAD THE SAME PROBLEM IN FEBRUARY 2017 AND THE SEAT BELTS TIGHENED WHILE THE DRIVER WAS AT A STOP SIGN WITH NO OTHER CARS AROUND. I BOUGHT MY CAR IN JANUARY 2017, AND THIS ONLY JUST HAPPENED 6/2/2018 AND EVERY DAY SINCE.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
