Recalls, owner-reported complaints, investigations and safety data

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

The defect: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2009-2011 K1300 (S, GT), 2010-2011 S1000 RR, 2005-2011 R1200 (GS, GS Adventure, R, RT, S, ST), 2006-2010 HP2 (Enduro, Megamoto, Sport), 2005-2008 K1200 (R, R Sport, S, GT), and 2012 K1600 (GT, GTL) motorcycles that were repaired under recall 13V-617 with the support ring remedy and where the fuel pump was not replaced at a later date. This recall involves the fuel pump, and also the auxiliary fuel pump as applicable. The affected motorcycles have a fuel pump flange that may crack, possibly resulting in a fuel leak while the engine is running.
The risk: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.
The remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump(s) with an improved version, free of charge. The recall began January 18, 2021. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

The remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the existing aluminum rear wheel flange with a steel one, free of charge. The recall began on May 7, 2015. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

THE GAS TANK HAS QUICK DISCONNECT FITTINGS THAT SCREW INTO A PLASTIC FLANGE ON EACH SIDE OF THE TANK. THE FITTING THREADS ARE SIMILAR TO NPT PIPE THREADS WHICH OVER STRESS THE PLASTIC AND RESULT IN CRACKING, FUEL THEN LEAKS FROM THE TANK UNDER THE FAIRING ASSEMBLY ON TO ELECTRICAL WIRING, ENGINE PARTS AND HOT EXHAUST COMPONENTS. THIS COULD RESULT IN FIRE OR UNEXPECTED STOPPAGE CAUSING AN ACCIDENT OR FATALITY FROM A WRECK IN TRAFFIC. *TR

WHILE RIDING ALONG A TWISTY RURAL ROAD WITH A PASSENGER THE ENGINE QUIT WITHOUT WARNING. DUE TO THE RURAL NATURE OF THE ROADWAY AND THE PREVAILING TERRAIN, THERE WERE FEW SAFE PLACES TO PULL OVER. FORTUNATELY I WAS ON A DOWNHILL SLOPE AND WAS ABLE TO QUICKLY REGAIN BALANCE OF THE MACHINE AND COAST UNTIL A SAFE PULLOUT COULD BE REACHED. UPON INSPECTION, IT WAS DETERMINED THE FUEL INDICATING SYSTEM WAS FAULTY INDICATING ABOUT 1/3 OF A TANK OF FUEL REMAINING WHEN THE TANK WAS EMPTY, ALSO, THE LOW FUEL LIGHT DID NOT ILLUMINATE OR THE RANGE TO EMPTY APPEAR, AS IS THE DESIGN OF THE SYSTEM. THE FUEL INDICATION SYSTEM ON THIS MACHINE CONSISTS OF A FUEL GAUGE, A LOW FUEL LIGHT, AND A RANGE UNTIL EMPTY. THE SYSTEM HAD WORKED ACCURATELY UNTIL THE FAILURE, MEANING I HAD NO PREVIOUS INDICATION THAT THE SYSTEM WAS FAILING OR ABOUT TO FAIL. SINCE MOTORCYCLE STABILITY IS FREQUENTLY DEPENDENT ON PROPER APPLICATION OF THROTTLE, THE SUDDEN STOPPAGE OF THE ENGINE COULD QUITE EASILY LEAD TO A CRASH. *TR

I WAS RIDING MY 2009 BMW R1200GS ADVENTURE MOTORCYCLE AT APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH IN THE CARPOOL LANE. IT BEGAN TO RAIN SO I WENT TO PULL ONTO THE SHOULDER TO DON MY RAIN GEAR. I PULLED THE BRAKE LEVER TO SLOW, ONLY TO FIND I HAD NO BRAKES. I WAS ABLE TO SAFELY SLOW THE VEHICLE USING THE REAR BRAKE. INSPECTION OF THE FRONT BRAKES SHOWED THE RIGHT FRONT CALIPER WAS HANGING FREELY, ONLY CONNECTED BY THE HYDRAULIC LINE. THE TWO BOLTS THAT HOLD THE CALIPER TO THE FORK MOUNTS WERE MISSING. INSPECTION OF THE TWO BOLT HOLES ON THE FORK SHOWED THAT THEY WERE COMPLETELY STRIPPED. NOTE THE VEHICLE HAD BOTH FRONT BRAKE ROTORS REPLACED BY THE DEALER TWO DAYS EARLIER. THIS REQUIRED REMOVAL OF THE BRAKE CALIPERS. THE BIKE HAD BEEN RIDDEN LESS THAN 50 MILES SINCE THE SERVICE. THIS IS THE FIRST OCCURRENCE OF THIS PROBLEM FOR ME ON THIS VEHICLE. THE DAMAGE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED YET. *TR

Since October 2023, a new maintenance schedule is valid for all K5x models. For the first time, maintenance positions for the cardan shaft (Driveshaft) are included. NOTICE: 1. The new maintenance schedule is not limited to vehicles affected by the SI 33 02 22 (SERVICE ACTION: Swingarm Drain retrofit and Driveshaft Check), but is valid for all K5x models - including retroactively. For vehicles affected by SI 33 02 22 (SERVICE ACTION: Swingarm Drain retrofit and Driveshaft Check), this service action must be performed first. All conditions described in this bulletin apply after the open Service Action has been completed. No additional communication is required for K5x models model year 2024 and onwards. Those models have the new maintenance schedule in their owner’s manual.

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
