What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 2500, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
as mentioned by many customers the dash on the vehicles crack and GM refuses to pay for repairs. Now there is a Airbag recall that needs to be completed and I am told by dealer that the dash will crack more and get worse during the repair and they are not responsible for the damage. This is unacceptable and unsafe as it is costing me and consumers more money for a defective product.
The contact owns a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 2500. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V050000 (Air Bags); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The dealer was made aware of the issue and confirmed that parts were not yet available. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and confirmed that parts were not yet available. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
Engine suddenly stopped running while driving and could not be restarted. It was towed to a local diesel repair shop. Diagnostics showed a catastrophic failure of the high pressure fuel pump which polluted the complete fuel system with metal.
With all the known issues involving the failing CP4 fuel pumps out in the field, why hasn't there been a nationwide recall on this issue? We're being proactive in getting our LML repaired to save our engine. We want our costs reimbursed. This isn't a "small" matter. It's freakin' huge.
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
Reduction tank makes truck only go 55 when the tank is full causing truck to not go flow of traffic there is a recall 11001 but gm dealer will not repair and knew about this and still sold the truck without tell customer about this
The contact owns a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 2500. The contact stated while driving 45 MPH, the vehicle shut-off with the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact was able to pull over and restart the vehicle; however, the failure persisted. The dealer was notified of the failure and the contact was able to drive the vehicle to the dealer; however, the vehicle was not yet diagnosed. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 203,000.
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
The transmission control module (TCM) began acting erratic. At times the transmission will not shift but several times it has gone into park( with no warning) when slowing down causing the wheels to lock and the truck skids to a stop. I was nearly in 2 accidents when this happened. Both time I was hauling a load and caused the traffic behind me have to swerve to not run into me. In looking into the issue I found that in 2011 GM had put out a shop notice that they had a known problem with the TCM and they thought it might be caused by a non-OEM fan belt causing electrical discharge that might impact the TCM. A second shop notice from GM stated that the issue was due to heat and since they has mounted the unit on the fan shroud it should be moved. But none of the shops I went to knew about these shop notices from GM. Thousands of TCMS have failed but no recall. GM has now greatly reduced production of replacement modules and the cost of a new TCM has gone from $400 to $5000 ( Plus programing ) and a long wait time to get one. You can get one refurbished for $1200.
It is a transmission control module wear a lobster transmission into a Garin. Will not let you speed up or speed down and it is unsafe and GM IS making us pay for the bill. The contact stated transmission control module all across the country on back order, you cannot get a dealer to get you one within six months GM should have to do something about this.
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim

GM is aware of a known failure in their Transmission Control Modules. My part number is 24256670. My truck has 87,000 miles on it and not drivable due to this failed electronic component. There are thousands of people just like me experiencing this issue. Check engine light illuminates once unit gets hot. Multiple codes will display at this time. This happened at a stop light, causing traffic jam and congestion, unnecessary safety infringement on all i affected.
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim

ON SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2019, I WAS ATTEMPTING TO EXIT MY VEHICLE WHEN I PULLED THE DOOR HANDLE ONLY TO HAVE IT BREAK OFF IN MY HAND. I WENT TO REACH TO SEE IF THERE WAS ANYTHING LEFT TO PULL TO OPEN THE DOOR ONLY TO FIND THE HANDLE HAD BROKEN OFF CLEANLY FROM THE MECHANISM, LEAVING NO OTHER WAY TO EXIT THE VEHICLE OTHER THAN ROLLING DOWN THE WINDOW AND OPENING THE DOOR FROM THE OUTSIDE THROUGH THE WINDOW OR BY SLIDING ALL THE WAY ACROSS THE VEHICLE TO EXIT THROUGH THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. IMMEDIATELY I THOUGHT THAT IF THIS HAD BEEN AN EMERGENCY, SUCH AS A FIRE OR WRECK, I WOULD PROBABLY NOT BE ABLE TO EXIT THE VEHICLE IN A SAFE AND TIMELY MANNER, RISKING FURTHER INJURY OR DEATH. I CALLED MY LOCAL CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP TO INQUIRE ABOUT A REPLACEMENT HANDLE & MECHANISM, ONLY TO BE TOLD THAT THIS IS A COMMON AND SYSTEMIC PROBLEM WITH MOST GM VEHICLES. I VIEW THIS AS A SAFETY CONCERN MORE THAN JUST A NORMAL MAINTENANCE OR REPAIR ISSUE, SIMILAR TO THE SAFETY CONCERN OF A COMMERCIAL AIRCRAFT'S DOOR NOT OPENING IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY EXIT DURING AN ACCIDENT. GM, FORD, DODGE, AND ALL AUTOMOBILE MAKERS SHOULD ENSURE THAT A COMMON OR SYSTEMIC PROBLEM WITH A SAFETY ITEM, SUCH AS AN EXIT DOOR, SHOULD BE CORRECTED TO AVOID DANGEROUS CONDITIONS. THANK YOU.

Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2500 HD. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 45 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL JERKED VIOLENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 20,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 40,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2500 HD DIESEL. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE STEERING SYSTEM WAS PULLING HARD TO THE LEFT WHILE DRIVING 40 MPH. THE STEERING WHEEL WOBBLED MUCH MORE WHEN DRIVING UPHILL VERSUS DOWNHILL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER AT LEAST FIVE TIMES WHO INSPECTED THE FAILURE AND ADVISED THAT THEY WERE UNABLE TO FIND THE PROBLEM. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE A MINIMUM OF TEN TIMES BUT OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 10,500.

Tires & wheels
Reports naming tires, wheels, hubs, or the tire-pressure monitoring system.
From owner reports, verbatim
RIGHT FRONT TIRE SIDEWALL BLEW OUT. TIRE IS A MICHELIN LTX MS2 SIZE 275 70 18. THIS IS THE SAME SERIES TIRE THAT MICHELIN HAS ALREADY HAD A RECALL ON BUT A DIFFERENT SIZE. CAN ONLY SUSPECT THAT THIS TIRE SIZE HAS SAME PROBLEM SINCE THERE IS NO VISIBLE EVIDENCE OF THE TIRE BEING CUT ANYWHERE AS INSPECTED BY BLACK'S TIRE SERVICE IN WILMINGTON NC WHICH WAS THE NEAREST MICHELIN DEALER AT THE END OF MY TRIP TO NC. ALSO HAVE PICTURE OF TIRE IF NEEDED. *TR
THIS IS AN RV TRAILER TIRE. SIDEWALL HAS SEPARATED FROM THE TREAD. SIDEWALL IS TORN ALONG WHAT APPEARS TO BE POLYESTER CORD ALONG ENTIRE CIRCUMFERENCE OF THE TIRE ABOUT 2 INCHES FROM THE TREAD. THE TIRE IS A GOODYEAR MARATHON ST235/80R 16 LOAD RANGE E. BLOWOUT OCCURRED AT 45 MPH ON BLACKTOP. TIRE PRESSURE CAREFULLY MAINTAINED AT SPEC 80PSI. ABSOLUTELY NO OVERLOAD ISSUES. TIRE SMOKED PROFUSELY BUT NO FIRE. *TR

Seat belts
Reports naming seat belts, buckles, retractors and pretensioners.
From owner reports, verbatim
PURCHASED A VEHICLE FROM DAVE SMITH MOTORS ON OCT 7,2019 AND THE REAR SEAT BELTS DO T MATCH OR OPERATE AFTER BEING TOLD IT WENT THROUGH A 125 POINT INSPECTION AND ON THEIR SITE SAYS SEATBELTS ARE INSPECTED AND I HAVE UNOPERATIONAL SEAT BELTS WHICH IS A SAFTEY HAZARD ON THEIR PART AS THEY SOLD A VEHICLE WITH UNMATCHED AND OPERATIONAL SAFTEY BELTS.
ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS THE DRIVE'S SEAT BELT HAS TOTALLY "RELEASED" WHILE DRIVING ALONG THE HIGHWAY WHILE I AND OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS HAVE DRIVING ALONG. THESE INADVERTENT RELEASES WERE REPORTED TO MY VEHICLES DEALER (T & C CHEVROLET, ASHLAND, OREGON) ON MAY 27,.2016 AT 21261 MILES. DEALER SAID THEY COULD NOT FIND ANY DEFECT. THE VEHICLE PRESENTLY HAS APPROXIMATELY 32000 MILES AND THE DRIVER'S SEAT BELT STILL RELEASES AT UNPREDICTABLE TIMES. THIS SITUATION HAS ME VERY CONDERNED ABOUT MY AND OTHERS SAFETY IF SOMETHING UN-TOWARD HAPPENS.

Suspension
Reports naming suspension components — springs, struts, shocks, control arms and related hardware.
From owner reports, verbatim
WHILE TOWING A 5TH WHEEL TRAILER AT 60 MPH, THE RIGHT REAR (PASSENGER) WHEEL CAME OFF THE TRUCK. FIVE OF THE EIGHT WHEEL STUDS SHEARED OFF, THREE OTHERS LOST THEIR LUG NUTS. THE TRAILER WEIGHT DID NOT EXCEED THE AXLE, WHEEL OR TIRE WEIGHT RATINGS. *TR
NEW VEHICLE FRONT END SUSPENSION BEGAN TO RANDOMLY VIOLENTLY SHAKE AT DIFFERENT SPEEDS (ONCE @ 55 MPH & ONCE @ 70 MPH). THE SHAKING WAS SO BAD THAT THE DRIVER COULD BARLEY HOLD THE WHEEL STRAIGHT TO AVOID LOSING CONTROL & CRASHING. WHILE THIS WAS HAPPENING THE VEHICLE 4 WD LIGHT WAS BLINKING DESPITE THE FACT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS IN 2 WD. ONCE DRIVER WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER HE INSPECTED THE OUTSIDE OF THE VEHICLE TO FIND NO MECHANICAL ISSUES (NO FLAT TIRES, THINGS IN THE WHEELS, ETC...). DRIVER THEN BEGAN DRIVING AGAIN & THE VEHICLE WAS FINE AS IF NOTHING HAPPENED. DRIVER CALLED ONSTAR & THEY STATED THERE WERE NO FAULT CODES IN THE SYSTEM. SEVERAL DAYS LATER THE SAME THING HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING AT 70 MPH. THIS TIME THE DRIVER NEARLY GOT INTO A ROLL OVER ACCIDENT. HE WAS ABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. UPON INSPECTION THERE WERE AGAIN NO MECHANICAL ISSUES. OWNER DROVE TO DEALER & WAS TOLD TO BRING BACK THE NEXT DAY. OWNER INQUIRED IF VEHICLE WAS SAFE TO DRIVE & WAS TOLD "I HOPE SO" BY THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN. GM CUSTOMER CARE WAS CALLED & STATED THEY WERE NOT AWARE OF ANY ISSUES WITH THE 2011 HD VEHICLES. OWNER TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER NEXT MORNING & SEVERAL HOURS LATER WAS CALLED & TOLD IT WAS MUD IN WHEELS (NOT POSSIBLE SINCE THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED THERE WAS NO MUD). OWNERS SON THEN LOOKED ON INTERNET TO SEE MANY PEOPLE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE IN THIS MODEL YEAR VEHICLE. THE SON THEN FOUND THAT A TSB WAS ISSUED BY GM TO ALL DEALERS FOR A STICKY BREAK PEDAL THAT WHEN STUCK (EVEN THOUGH IT APPEARS VISUALLY TO NOT BE STUCK) WILL AT RANDOM TIMES CAUSE THE ABS TO ACTIVATE VIOLENTLY. TSB# PIT5037B. DEALER WAS THEN TOLD BY OWNER ABOUT THE TSB & DEALER WAS NOT AWARE OF TSB. REPAIR WAS PERFORMED & THE VEHICLE HAS NOT SHOOK SINCE. OWNER WAS SUPPOSE TO BE PULLING A 30 FT 5TH WHEEL WITH A 15 FT TRAILER ATTACHED TO IT (45 FT. TOTAL). IF THEY HAD BEEN THEY LIKELY WOULD HAVE BEEN IN MAJOR ACCIDENT WITH POSSIBLE LOSS OF LIFE DUE TO THE SWAY IT CAUSES WHEN IT OCCURS. *TR

From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 2500. The contact stated that while his wife was driving at an undisclosed speed, she made a mid-left turn and heard a low sound coming from the engine. The contact then stated that as his wife depressed the accelerator pedal, the engine revved but the vehicle failed to respond. The service stabilitrak, ABS, and check engine warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the transmission control module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that the parts to do the repair were on back order. The manufacture was notified of the failure and the contact was provided a case number but no further assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 61,000.
