What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2009 Chrysler Town And Country, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Driving the van and it shuts have no power! It has happened several times
The contact owns a 2009 Chrysler Town and Country. The contact stated while driving 10 MPH and pulling into a parking lot, the vehicle inadvertently stalled and the ignition key was released. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that she reinserted the key into the ignition switch and restarted the vehicle; however, the failure reoccurred as she was attempting to pull into a parking space. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the camshaft had failed and needed to be replaced. The contact stated that the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure reoccurred twice while driving from the independent mechanic to her residence. The vehicle was taken back to the independent mechanic. The contact contacted an unknown dealer who advised that they were not aware of that specific failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 174,000.
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
Air conditioning condensation leaking below dashboard and onto carpet, causing electrical shorts in air bag and anti-lock brake (ABS). Chrysler identified this issue and issued a recall (K25) in January 2011, but only for vehicles manufactured through December 3, 2008. In consultation with Chrysler and according to its own internal documentation, my vehicle (manufactured in February 2009) has the same defective parts and is prone to the same safety issues caused by condensation leaking into critical electronic safety components, but they refuse to remedy the safety issue "due to it not being subject to the recall" -- despite Chrysler personnel conceding that my February-2009 was manufactured with the same, identical, flawed parts as those 2008 and earlier 2009 models that are subject to recall K25.
Chrysler aka FCA has recently recalled TPMS sensors of 2022 vehicles but has NOT recalled the 2009 Town and Country TPMS systems. I bought my 2009 Town and Country new and bought the MaxiCare bumper to bumper lifetime no deductible warranty for it. It now has 180,000 miles on it. I've complained to the local dealer on numerous occasions about the TPMS giving false warnings. They have changed components for several years, but the problem has never been resolved. I've given them numerous videos of the false warnings as they happened. They have been unable to resolve the problem even after consulting Chrysler "experts" by setting up STAR Claims with Chrysler Corporation. This is a safety issue. The false audible and dash light warnings take place driving on expressways. The light stays lit for many miles. Then the system resets and the same thing can happen the same day or days or weeks later. The last date was 8/4/22. Attached photos are frames from the 8/4/22 videos I made showing 264.7 Trip Miles Alarm with two normal and two flat tires, 265.4 Trip Miles all 4 tires flat, 299.2 Trip Miles all 4 tires still flat, 341.8 Trip Miles normal display with normal tire pressures shown in all 4 tires after system reset itself.

Lug studs sheared off, launching a tire into a house.
TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM (TPMS) SPONTANEOUSLY GIVE FALSE ALARM WITH AUDIBLE WARNING, FLASHING YELLOW TIRE PRESSURE WARNING DASH LIGHT, "CHECK TPM SYSTEM" DISPLAY LIGHTS THEN MESSAGE DISPLAY SHOWS THE TIRE PRESSURE IN THE FOUR TIRES. THEN THE TIRE PRESSURE DISPLAY ONE AT A TIME DELETES DISPLAY OF TWO DIGIT TIRE PRESSURES AND REPLACES EACH TIRE PRESSURE DISPLAY WITH "- -" IN PLACE OF THE ACTUAL PRESSURE UNTIL ALL FOUR TIRE PRESSURES ARE DISPLAYED AS "- -" AND THAT FALSE TIRE PRESSURE DISPLAY CONTINUES FOR MANY MINUTES WHILE THE ELECTRONIC DISPLAY SHOWS PRESENCE OF SYSTEM WARNING. THE LOSS OF TIRE PRESSURE ON EACH TIRES CAN ORIGINATE WITH ANY OF THE FOUR TIRES AND CONTINUES UNTIL ALL FOUR ARE "- -" READINGS. THE SYSTEM CONTINUES THE FALSE WARNING FOR MANY MINUTES. THE SYSTEM CAN SPONTANEOUS RESET THE FALSE WARNING TO NORMAL OPERATION DURING THE SAME TRAVEL. THE SYSTEM CAN CONTINUE THE FALSE WARNING AFTER THE IGNITION IS TURNED OFF, THE KEY FOB REMOVED FROM THE IGNITION SWITCH AND THE VEHICLE DOOR OPENED. THE FALSE WARNING CAN ARISE SPONTANEOUSLY UNDER ANY TRAVEL CONDITIONS WHETHER STOPPED OR IN MOTION, ON ROUGH CITY STREETS OR SMOOTH EXPRESSWAY, WHETHER TRAVELING STRAIGHT OR TURNING. THE FALSE WARNING CAN HAPPEN FREQUENTLY OR INTERMITTENTLY WEEKS OR MONTHS BETWEEN EVENTS. MY COMPLAINTS STARTED WHEN THE VEHICLE HAD MUCH LESS THAN 100,000 MILES. FOR FIVE YEARS OR SO THE DEALER WHO SOLD THE VEHICLE TO ME HAS BEEN UNABLE TO FIX THE PROBLEM EVEN AFTER CONSULTING THE CHRYSLER TECH SUPPORT PEOPLE DESPITE MY NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS AND PROVIDING VIDEO AND STILL PHOTO EVIDENCE OF THE EVENT HAPPENING AND GIVING THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER TO FIX THE PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE IS STILL UNDER A NO DEDUCTIBLE CHRYSLER BUMPER TO BUMPER LIFETIME WARRANTY FOR WHICH I PAID THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS. I HAVE VIDEO AND STILL PHOTOS DOCUMENTING THE EVENTS.

THE VAN HAS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH ITS MAKER- CHRYSLER WHICH IS WITH MOTOR OF THE STOW-N-GO. THE BACK SEAT THE MOTOR DOES NOT WORK ON HALF OF THE SEAT MAKING THE SEAT LOOK "BENT" AND UNABLE TO BE USED.UPON FURTHER RESEARCH IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THIS IS SOMETHING THAT THE MAKER IS AWARE OF AND MANY OF THE MOTORS GO OUT. THIS IS WHY IT'S A VERY HARD PART TO REPLACE COSTING ABOUT 4000 AS IT NEEDS TO BE MADE BRAND NEW.THE WARRANTY IS EXPIRED. THE FRUSTRATION IS THAT MOPAR (CHRYSLER) WILL NOT EVEN CONSIDER OFFERING ANY KIND OF ASSISTANCE WITH THIS ISSUE AS THE ABOVE MENTIONED WARRANTY EXPIRED. THIS, HOWEVER IS A KNOWN PROBLEM TO THEM. THEY ARE KEEPING QUIET ABOUT AS THEY CAN'T CALL IT A RECALL WHEN IT'S NOT CONSIDERED A "SAFETY" CONCERN. IT IS A SAFETY CONCERN AS IF MY CHILD CAN'T SIT IN THE SEAT. WE WERE TOLD THAT THE SEAT IS NOT SAFE TO SIT IN. SPOKE TO A SUPERVISOR AT MOPAR WHO DISMISSED ME PROMPTLY. WOULD NOT OFFER TO HELP WITH ANYTHING SINCE "THE VEHICLE HAS 105,000 MILES ON IT" UNSURE WHY THE SAFETY ASPECT OF THIS WOULDN'T BE IMPORTANT ENOUGH TO WANT TO HELP. WILL NOT EVEN ENTERTAIN THE IDEA OF BUYING AN AMERICAN MADE VEHICLE AGAIN. THIRD TIME OWNING A CHRYSLER/DOGE VEHICLE WITH MAJOR ISSUES. THIS IS WHY OUR ECONOMY CAN'T BOUNCE BACK-TOO MUCH DISHONESTY!!
Body & structure
Reports naming the vehicle structure, frame, body panels, doors, hood and trim.
From owner reports, verbatim
SOMETIME OVERNIGHT ON JAN 1/2ND 2019 MY VEHICLE STARTED ON FIRE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT IN USE, WAS PARKED IN OUR DRIVEWAY, AND HAD NOT BEEN IN USE SINCE THE MORNING BEFORE. THE FIRE MUST HAVE WENT OUT ON ITS OWN. BUT CAUSED DAMAGE TO BOTH THE INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE INSIDE OF THE VAN SMELLS HEAVILY OF ELECTRICAL SMOKE.
SE ENCIENDE EL PANEL MARCANDO ABS. TAMBIN SE ABRE LAS PUERTAS COREDISA Y EL BAL ESTANDO EL CARO PARADO. HAY VECES QUE SE QUEDA PEGADO Y TENGO QUE ESPERAR QUE EL SISTEMA QUIERA PARA PODER CERRAR LAS PUERTAS Y / EL BAL. ME A PASADO VARIAS VECES.
Visibility
Reports naming windshields, glass, wipers, defrosters and mirrors.
From owner reports, verbatim
WE WHERE DRIVING IN FLORIDA ON VACATION ON JUNE 12, 2017 WHEN OUR 2009 CHRYSLER TOWN AND COUNTRY STARTED TO HAVE ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS . THE WIPERS WOULDN'T SHUT OFF UNTIL THE WIPER MOTOR BURNED UP , THE DRIVERS SEAT WOULDN'T STOP MOVING FORWARD AND BACK , THE WINDOWS WOULDN'T GO DOWN , AC WENT OUT , THE ENTIRE DASH BOARD LIGHT UP AND ALL THE LIGHTS STAYED ON , THE SPEEDOMETER WAS DEAD , THE GAS GAUGE WAS DEAD , THE TURN SIGNALS DIDN'T WORK , THE DVD PLAYERS DIDN'T WORK . WE TOOK IT TO A DEALERSHIP AND THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT . IT THEN DID IT AGAIN AND IT WENT BACK TO THE SAME DEALERSHIP AND AGAIN THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING . ON THE WAY HOME ON I-95 IT STARTED AGAIN . WHEN WE GOT HOME WE TOOK IT TO A GARAGE THAT DEALS WITH ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS AND HE FOUND OUT IT WAS A DVD PLAYER IN THE FRONT THAT WAS MAKING IT GO NUTS . HE DISCONNECTED IT AND ITS OK BUT NOW NOTHING WORKS , LIKE THE 3 DVD PLAYERS, THE HEATED MIRRORS , THE REMOTE START . THIS ISSUE NEEDS TO BE FIXED BEFORE SOME ONE GETS KILLED ON THE HIGHWAY .
THE 2009 CHRYSLER TOWN AND COUNTRY HAS A DESIGN FLAW IN THE DEFROST VENT DESIGN. THE FRONT DEFROST VENTS ARE NOT PROPERLY ANGLED TO CLEAR THE LOWER PORTION OF THE WINDOW. DURING INCLEMENT WEATHER THE WIPERS CAN BECOME FROZEN TO THE WINDSHIELD AND FAIL TO PROPERLY WORK. THE VENTS ARE ANGLED SO AS THE BOTTOM 4 INCHES OF THE WINDOW HAS LITTLE TO NO AIR CIRCULATING ON THE WINDOW. THIS DESIGN ALSO CAUSES THE WINDOW TO FOG IN TEMPERATURES BELOW 32 DEGREES AND NOT CLEAR PROPERLY. THE VENTS ALSO DO NOT ANGLE TO THE OUTER EDGES OF THE WINDOWS. THIS COULD RESULT IN VISIBILITY ISSUES AND INJURY OR DEATH COULD OCCUR. THIS HAPPENS WHEN PARKED AND WHEN DRIVING. THIS HAS HAPPENED ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS. WHEN I CONTACTED CHRYSLER CORPORATION THEY FAIL TO SAY THERE IS A FLAW. THE FLAW IS EASILY SEEN BY A VISUAL CHECK JUST BY LOOKING AT THE ANGLE OF THE VENTS ON THE DASH BOARD.
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
MY VEHICLE WILL STOP AFTER I HAVE FINISHED DRIVING IT. THIS HAS HAPPENED QUITE FREQUENTLY. I WILL HAVE TO JUMP START MY BATTERY AND THEN THE ENGINE WILL START. IT USUALLY HAPPENS WHEN THE CAR HAS BEEN SITTING OVERNIGHT OR FOR LONGER PERIODS OF TIME (MEANING OVER 6 HOURS). I HAVE ALREADY REPLACED THE BATTERY AND TOOK THE CAR TO A MECHANIC. THE MECHANIC SAID IT A BIG PROBLEM WITH CHRYSLER TOWN AND COUNTY. THE FUEL PUMP RELAY IS NOT WORKING RIGHT AND CAUSING MY BATTERY TO DRAIN OR NOT START. HE SAID THERE ARE RECALLS FOR VERY SIMILAR CARS AND MODELS, BUT CHECKED MY VIN AND IT WAS NOT ON MY VEHICLE. I NEED TO THE COMPANY TO LOOK INTO THIS AS THIS SEEMS LIKE A PROBLEM THAT COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED. THIS COULD BE DANGEROUS IF THE CAR STOPS ON ITS OWN WHILE DRIVING.
FUEL PUMP KEEPS BURNING OUT. I AM ON MY THIRD FUEL PUMP AND REPLACED THE TIPM
Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.
From owner reports, verbatim
Our 2009 chrysler town and country is having major issues. The dashboard lights keep going on and off the speedometer won't work when this is happening also the windshield wipers go on automatically with me putting them on and won't stop. Sometimes while this occurs our automatic door won't operate or radio. We got a new alternator a new battery a new iod fuse and it's still happening i wasn't sure if this was a normal occurrence for chryslers so I did some research my van isn't the only one with the same issues we unfortunately bought it used a few months ago and can't take it back to the lot.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 CHRYSLER TOWN AND COUNTRY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS AND TURN SIGNALS STOPPED WORKING AND THE HORN CONTINUOUSLY SOUNDED. THE CONTACT HAD TO REMOVE THE FUSE IN ORDER TO STOP THE HORN FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER ACKNOWLEDGED THE FAILURE WITH THE LIGHTS; HOWEVER, THEY COULD NOT ASSIST WITH THE REPAIR COST SINCE THERE WAS NO RECALL. THE DEALER (COURTESY MOTOR SALES INC, 3100 PLEASANT VALLEY BLVD, ALTOONA, PA 16602, (814) 942-9000) OFFERED TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT WITH AN UPFRONT FEE FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 162,000.
Suspension
Reports naming suspension components — springs, struts, shocks, control arms and related hardware.
From owner reports, verbatim
WHILE DRIVING IN HEAVY TRAFFIC ON EXPRESSWAY THE REAR AXLE ASSEMBLY CRACKED IN HALF CAUSING UNCONTROLABLE UNSTABLE/SWAYING MOTION WHICH IN TURN CAUSED DRIVING THE VEHICLE OVER 15 MPH IMPOSSIBLE. I BELEIVE THAT IF I WERE DRIVING AT NORMAL HWY SPEEDS THE VEHICLE WOULD HAVE FLIPPED OVER OR CAUSED A MAJOR ACCIDENT.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 CHRYSLER TOWN AND COUNTRY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THREE OF THE FOUR WHEEL BEARINGS FAILED INTERMITTENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THREE WHEEL BEARINGS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND PROVIDED NO REMEDY. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 55,417.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 CHRYSLER TOWN AND COUNTRY. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED AND ALL THE INSTRUMENT PANEL LIGHTS INTERMITTENTLY ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE CLUTCH CONVERTER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 11V139000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM); HOWEVER, THE PART TO DO THE REPAIR WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 97,000.
I OWN A 2009 CHRYSLER TOWN AND COUNTRY TOURING. I NOW HAVE APPROXIMATELY 60,000 MILES ON IT. WE HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE BRAKES SEVERAL TIMES. SHORTLY AFTER REPLACING, THE BRAKES HAVE A HIGH PITCHED SQUEAL. WE HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THIS IS DUE TO EXTRA HARD BRAKE PADS. EVENTUALLY, THE PADS WARP DUE TO EXTREME HEAT AND THE STEERING WHEEL VIBRATES WHEN BRAKING. WE HAVE REPLACED THE BRAKE PADS AT LEAST FOUR TIMES SINCE OWNING THE VEHICLE. IN ADDITION, WE HAVE EXPERIENCED A ROUGH TRANSMISSION. MOST RECENTLY INCLUDING STALLING WHEN STOPPING AT HIGHWAY EXITS. WE BELIEVE BOTH OF THESE ISSUES ARE CAUSES FOR CONCERN FOR SAFETY. *KB

Seat belts
Reports naming seat belts, buckles, retractors and pretensioners.
From owner reports, verbatim
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A SUNSHINE KIDS RADIAN XTSL CHILD RESTRAINT, MANUFACTURED OCTOBER 1, 2009. THE MODEL NUMBER WAS UNKNOWN. THE CHILD RESTRAIN WAS SECURED IN A 2009 CHRYSLER TOWN AND COUNTRY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE LATCH STRAPS HAD BECOME LOOSE WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS BEING DRIVEN. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE YET THE CHILD SEAT WAS NEITHER REPAIRED NOR REPLACED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE CHILD SEAT WAS NO LONGER BEING USED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE AND VIN WERE UNAVAILABLE.
