2015 Ford Edge Electrical Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the electrical system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Electrical reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

During operation of my 2015 Ford Edge Titanium, the vehicle experienced intermittent loss of acceleration and multiple electronic warning messages. While driving, pressing the accelerator pedal would sometimes result in little or no vehicle acceleration. The RPMs fluctuated abnormally and the vehicle appeared to enter a reduced-power condition. Warning messages included “Hill Start Assist Unavailable” and traction/anti-skid related warnings. Cruise control also became inoperable. The issue created a safety risk because the vehicle would not reliably accelerate during normal driving conditions, including while attempting to maintain speed in traffic. This created concern about merging, crossing intersections, or safely responding to traffic conditions. Additional symptoms included rear lights remaining illuminated unexpectedly and electronic brake-related behavior that appeared abnormal. An independent auto parts diagnostic scan identified low-voltage history codes and a brake switch/brake signal issue. The vehicle battery tested good at the time of inspection. The transmission reportedly showed no faults during the initial scan. The brake switch issue was temporarily adjusted to allow the vehicle to be driven to a repair facility, but the underlying issue has not yet been permanently repaired. The problem has been reproduced during multiple driving events and was observed by an independent service provider. The dealership later advised that no recall currently applies to the vehicle VIN for this condition. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. Prior to the failure, warning lamps and messages appeared intermittently, including traction control, anti-skid, and “Hill Start Assist Unavailable” notifications. These symptoms began before the major acceleration issue occurred and became more frequent over time.

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The flexible brake hose on my 2015 Ford Edge failed/broke shortly after I purchased the vehicle. The vehicle also began experiencing engine performance issues, including a rough idle and rough driving condition after the check engine light came on. The vehicle and failed brake hose should be available for inspection upon request. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The broken flexible brake hose created a serious safety risk because it could affect the vehicle’s braking ability and increase the risk of losing control or being unable to stop safely. The rough engine performance also caused concerns about the reliability and safe operation of the vehicle while driving. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? The issue has been observed and experienced consistently while driving the vehicle. The brake hose damage and rough engine performance were noticeable after the vehicle was purchased. (If a mechanic has looked at it, you can add: “An independent mechanic/dealership confirmed the brake hose was damaged.”) Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? I have taken it to the dealership and they said nothing about it but I got it diagnosed at autozone and the code came up right away. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? Approximately 2–3 weeks after purchasing the vehicle, the check engine light came on and the vehicle began running roughly. Around the same time, issues related to the broken flexible brake hose were discovered. Symptoms included rough driving performance and concerns with the braking system

In june of 2022, the vehicle was exhibiting symptoms of hard to start especially after refueling, stalling, and poor drivability and the check engine light was illuminated. This vehicle was taken to local ford dealer (dowling ford- cheshire, ct) and diagnosed as a faulty fuel vapor separator (aka purge valve/solenoid) Ford part # f2gz-9d289-a. The dealer performed diagnosis/repair/replacement of this part at a total cost of approximately $600. The problem appeared to have been fixed, but now on 10/15/2024 the same issue re-appeared, and once again the dealer has determined same part has failed and now will cost $729 for diag/repair/replacement. This repair is just outside of the 2 year parts and labor warranty provided by ford and/or dealer. According to my online research this is a well known and common problem with these vehicles as well as many other similar ford vehicles which a recall HAS been issued for, and driver/occupant safety is gravely affected because this issue can cause stalling, poor throttle response, inability to start, and general poor driveability which seriously affects safety and cause a crash or cause driver to be unable to avoid a crash or other danger. Ford motor co and ford dealer refuses to accept responsibility for this issue and will not offer any assistance for repair. As of 10/29/24 the vehicle has not been repaired yet, and vehicle and parts are available for inspection.

Wife was on a trip. On April 27 2022 there were no warning lights or messages that she noticed. On arriving at her destination, tried to open rear hatch several times. Also tried button on the dash and attempts to manually pull up on hatch nothing would open it. Crawled into back to retrieve luggage then locked the vehicle for the night. Next morning tried to unlock the passenger door and would not work. Seemed that battery was to low to allow door lock to operate. Called tow service next morning. Service opened door and had to charge battery. Service said hatch not closed sufficient to let entry lights to stay on discharging the battery. At that time, dash button opened the hatch for technician. Ran car enough to charge battery. Wife left for return trip later on April 30 2022, at which time hatch would again not open. This is a safety issue If not able to open hatch to escape the vehicle in emergency or if power is lost. There is also no hatch emergency release for quick escape from vehicle. At this time the problem still exists. It is May 1 2022. I am calling Ford dealer and insurance rep. tomorrow May 2, 2022 to ask about this problem and see if any recalls apply. Please recall because of this issue. Thank you.

MY VEHICLE LOST POWER WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AT 70MPH. WE HAD JUST LEFT A SCENIC OVERVIEW WHERE THE CAR HAD BEEN SHUT OFF. ACCELERATED UP A HILL AND DROVE FOR A FEW MORE MILES ON FLAT, STRAIGHT ROADWAY AND THE DASH WENT BLACK. THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS ON BUT NOT IN USE. LOST ALL POWER, HOWEVER STEERING WAS RESPONSIVE AND BRAKES WORKED.. DAY TEMP ~85 DEGREES. VEHICLE MILES=48000. STEERED TO SHOULDER, PUT CAR IN PARK AND HIT THE IGNITION BUTTON. THE CAR RESTARTED. CALLED MY LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THAT CARS ARE SO COMPUTERIZED NOW THAT THEY NEED TO BE REBOOTED OCCASIONALLY AND TO CALL BACK OF IT CONTINUES TO HAPPEN. PER CARGURUS SITE THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING PROBLEM SINCE 2009. MOST CONSUMERS CITING A DEFECTIVE THROTTLE BOTTLE ASSEMBLY. WHAT'S IT GOING TO TAKE TO GET THIS ON A RECALL? THIS IS A MAJOR DEFECT. I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE MY VEHICLE. ZERO CONFIDENCE.

I HAVE OWNED THE VEHICLE FOR 9 MONTHS. 1ST OCCURRENCE ON 3/31/19, ACCELERATING TO MERGE ON HIGHWAY AND VEHICLE SHUDDERED, LOST ENGINE POWER AND WENT INTO LIMP MODE. I LIMPED IT HOME AND AFTER ABOUT 10 MINUTES I STARTED THE VEHICLE AND IT DROVE FINE... UNTIL 2ND OCCURRENCE ON 4/4/19... THIS TIME WAS DRIVING ABOUT 35-40 MPG APPROACHING AN INTERSECTION WHEN THE VEHICLE LOST ALL ENGINE POWER AND I COASTED TO THE STOP LIGHT, PUT IN PARK, SHUT OFF VEHICLE AND RESTARTED... IT THEN DROVE NORMALLY. I HAVE BEEN LUCKY TWICE. THE 1ST OCCURRENCE WAS SCARY AS I WAS JUST GETTING ON THE HIGHWAY WITH CARS APPROACHING ME FROM BEHIND VERY QUICKLY NOT KNOWING THAT I COULD ONLY GO ABOUT 20MPH. THE 2ND OCCURRENCE I WAS VERY LUCKY TO HAVE GOTTEN A RED LIGHT JUST AS I WAS COASTING TO THE INTERSECTION. AT THIS POINT I DON'T TRUST MY VEHICLE AND AM SCARED TO DRIVE IT KNOWING THAT AT ANY TIME, I MAY LOSE POWER AND NOT BE SO LUCKY. I HAVE HAD ZERO PROBLEMS FOR 9 MONTHS AND NOW 2 OF THESE ISSUES IN 5 DAYS... WHAT'S NEXT?

TAKARA RECALL I HAVE HAD CONTINUOUS ISSUES WITH MY 2015 EDGE WITH THE DOORS BECOMING AJAR. THE FIRST TIME I WAS STUCK IN BELOW ZERO CONDITIONS, WITHOUT BEING ABLE TO HAVE MY HEART ON CLOSE MY DOORS OR LOCK THEM. IF THAT WASNT ENOUGH, I HAD TO CALL A TOW TRUCK BECAUSE MY CAR BATTERY DIED AS A RESULT OF BEING ABLE TO CLOSE THE DOORS. THIS HAS HAPPENED COUNTLESS TIMES AND NOW AGAIN I HAVE ANOTHER ISSUE BUT THE LIFT GATE IS AJAR. THIS TIME HOWEVER THE CAR IS STILL DRIVING. HOW CAN FORD NOT RECALL THIS? YOU SAY IT ISN'T A SAFETY ISSUE BUT I COULD HAVE FROZE TO DEATH, BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED WHEN I'M DRIVING AND THE DOOR SUDDENLY FLIES OPEN. CORRECT THIS. I WILL END UP FILING A LAWSUIT IF ANYTHING HAPPENS AGAIN. I JUST BOUGHT THIS CAR A YEAR AGO. YOU CANNOT JUSTIFY A $40,000 CAR NOT BEING ABLE TO OPEN OR CLOSE MY DOORS OR TRUNK. GET IT FIGURED OUT OR I WILL BE CONTACTING SOMEONE WHO WILL. I'VE BEEN IN SUPPORT OF FORD SINCE I WAS 16. YOU'RE ABOUT TO LOOSE A VALUABLE CUSTOMER AND I'M ABOUT TO SPREAD THE WORD HOW FORD CANT STAND BEHIND THEIR VEHICLES.

WHILE DRIVING MY VEHICLE BETWEEN 45 AND 60 MPH ON CITY STREETS AND RURAL HIGHWAYS, RECEIVED A MESSAGE ON MY SCREEN STATING "THE USB DEVICE IS CONSUMING EXCESSIVE POWER. IT MAY NOT WORK CORRECTLY WITH SYNC."; BUT, THIS IS THE SAME DEVICE I'VE BEEN USING PLUGGED INTO THE SAME USB PORT EVER SINCE I BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE ON 07/07/15. I COULDN'T GET THIS MESSAGE TO CLEAR; BUT, SOON AFTERWARDS THIS MESSAGE APPEARED "NAVIGATION FAULT. PLEASE SEE THE TOUCHSCREEN" AND THE TOUCHSCREEN SHOWED THIS MESSAGE "INSERT NAV SD CARD"; BUT, MY NAV SD CARD WHICH IS AN A8 WAS INSERTED. SOON AFTER THIS MESSAGE APPEARED THE SCREEN WENT COMPLETELY DARK BEFORE IT BEGAN "PERFORMING SCHEDULED SYSTEM MAINTENANCE". MY VEHICLE WAS ORIGINALLY IN THE SHOP FOR THIS SAME ISSUE ON 07/19, 08/02 AND 08/04. DURING THE 07/19 VISIT THE FOLLOWING CORRECTIVE ACTIONS WERE TAKEN BY THE DEALERSHIP: S154 DIAG, POWER RESET AND APIM UPDATE TO SOFTWARE LEVEL 15128. FOLLOW-UP VISIT 08/02 INCLUDED THE FOLLOWING CORRECTIVE ACTIONS BY THE DEALERSHIP: S154 DIAG, APIM POWER RESET AND MASTER RESET. WILL HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL MONDAY, 08/07 TO HEAR BACK FROM THE DEALERSHIP REGARDING RECOMMENDED ACTIONS TO RESOLVE THIS ONGOING ISSUE.

THE LAST TIME I WAS DRIVING 60 MPH ON A BUSY HIGHWAY SO THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION ESPECIALLY IF I WAS SOMEWHERE THAT DIDN'T HAVE A AN AREA FOR ME TO PULL OVER OR HAD I BEEN STUCK IN THE MIDDLE LANE!
