While driving forward at various speeds (usually above 35 mph) the backup camera will engage and the transmission indicator will become blank (from "D") - and Wrench warning light came on during most recent events. It has happened about a dozen times sporadically over the past year and lasts for half minute to several minutes. It happens without warning. Dealer at first told me they could not analyze the problem unless they saw it happen. In Oct 22 when car was in shop for 2 other recall repairs, dealer said they would analyze it, charged me $145 with notation: 'checked for codes and found P0709 in continuous memory. PPT instructs to clear codes and test drive. Test drove 5 miles and found concern did not return at this time. Gave est on tr sensor due to suspected intermittent internal fault." I declined paying for repair because this does not seem to be normal wear and tear and I am doing nothing to cause the problem with how I operate the car.

Failed Part: Shift cable attachment at the transmission; Safety Risk: Unable to shift gears from inside the cabin making driving hazardous; Confirmed By: Tow truck driver and 2 independent service centers; Inspected By: Tow truck driver and 2 independent service centers; Warnings: None; The shift cable bushing has been recalled on other Ford models built during the same time period. I'm reporting as this may be related. This occurred in a parking lot. I reversed out of my parking spot, put the gear shift in drive, but the car was still in reverse. Roadside assistance was called. He showed me that the shift cable was not attached to the transmission. He was able to place the cable so that I could drive it a short distance to a service station for repair. The car is currently being repaired by an independent service center.

The contact owns a 2015 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the vehicle started to move without warning. The driver noticed that the back over prevention camera was activated and depressed the brake pedal. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer and was diagnosed with the gear linkage needing to be replaced due to the cable being stretched. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 92,000. The Vin was not available.

On June 23rd, I turned on my 2015 Ford Edge and heard a knocking/rattling noise coming from the engine that I had never heard before. It got worse when the A/C was on and while idling. It somewhat subsided while accelerating but became very loud again when I came to a stop. I took it to my local mechanic that is Ford trained, and after putting the car up, he indicated that he thought it was a broken Flex Plate. He said it was good that I had come in because if I had ignored it and been driving on the freeway, my car could have just shut off - which I think we can agree is highly dangerous. There was never a warning light or any indication of a problem prior to hearing the rattling/knocking sound on June 23rd. My mechanic advised me to call Ford to see if there was anything they would be willing to do as the repair was costly. I called my local Ford dealership in Irvine, CA on Thursday, June 24th and the service manager said that since it went out of warranty in Oct 2020, that the repair would be out of pocket. My mechanic then advised me to call Ford Motor Company in Michigan to see if there was anything they could do or provide assistance with. I spoke with "[XXX]" at 11:30am, and she advised me that there were no programs available for my vehicle. I was in disbelief considering there is a recall on the very same part for 2016-2017 Ford Edges. She apologized and said there was nothing they could do. She provided a case number #[XXX] and said she would let her engineering department and the NHTSA. The total cost of the repair was $1,819.64 and the cost of my rental from Enterprise for the 5 days was $611.74. I have photos of the repair process as well as the actual cracked flexplate part. This should not happen on a vehicle with 44k miles on it and I certainly should not be footing the bill for it when Ford [XXX] well knows this is a manufacturing problem on their part. WHEN PARKING THE VEHICLE THE SHIFTER GOT STUCK IN PARK BUT THE VEHICLE ITSELF WAS STUCK IN NEUTRAL. HAD TO PUT ON PARKING BRAKE AND GET VEHICLE TOWED (09/20). VEHICLE WAS FIXED. ISSUES WITH ELECTRONICS ON SHIFTER (10/19/20). REVERSING OUT OF DRIVEWAY ONTO STREET. WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO SHIFT INTO DRIVE THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT SHIFT OUT OF NEUTRAL. COASTED DOWN THE HILL 500' AND PULLED OVER TO THE SHOULDER AT INTERSECTION. SHIFTER WOULD MOVE BUT THE INDICTOR ON THE DASH WOULD NOT SAY IT WAS OUT OF NEUTRAL. I TRIED A FEW THINGS BEFORE PUTTING IT INTO PARK WHICH AGAIN LOCKED UP THE SHIFTER. SHIFTER WAS STUCK IN PARK BUT VEHICLE WAS IN NEUTRAL. HAD TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED AGAIN TO FORD DEALERSHIP. THIS TIME IT WAS THE SHIFTER BUSHING FELL APART. WAITING TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS NEXT WITH THIS ISSUE. LUCKILY IT WAS ONLY MYSELF AND NOT MY CHILDREN IN THE VEHICLE WHEN I HAD TO COAST DOWN THE HILL AND LEFT AT AN INTERSECTION.

AFTER STOPPING TO PARK THE CAR IN A STREET PARKING SPOT (THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY), I PLACED THE GEAR SHIFTER IN PARK, HOWEVER THE VEHICLE WENT INTO REVERSE. THE SHIFTER CABLE BUSHING DEGRADED AND FELL OFF THE CABLE WHICH DETACHED THE CABLE FROM THE TRANSMISSION. I KNOW THAT OTHER FORD VEHICLES HAVE THE SAME ISSUE, BUT THERE IS NO RECALL ISSUED FOR FORD EDGE VEHICLES EVEN THOUGH THEY HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE WHOLE CABLE (CLAIMED THAT THE BUSHING IS PART OF THE CABLE) AND CHARGED ME $700. THE DEALERSHIP INVOICE AND A COUPLE OF PICTURES OF THE MISSING BUSHING ARE ATTACHED AS A PDF DOCUMENT.

I PULLED INTO MY GARAGE, PUT THE VEHICLE IN PARK, & NOTICED THE LETTERS DISPLAYED BEHIND THE STEERING WHEEL STILL SHOWED THAT I WAS IN NEUTRAL EVEN THOUGH MY GEAR SHIFT WAS IN PARK. THE GEAR SHIFT WOULD NOT BUDGE FROM PARK EVEN WITH MY CAR ON. I TURNED THE CAR OFF & ON A FEW TIMES, BUT STILL NO CHANGE. I COULD ACTUALLY ROLL MY CAR FORWARD & BACKWARD BY HAND WHILE IN THE GARAGE WHILE THIS WAS HAPPENING. I PUT MY EMERGENCY BRAKE ON TO AVOID ANY FURTHER, UNWANTED MOVEMENT. I CALLED AAA TO COME TOW MY VEHICLE OUT OF THE GARAGE & TAKE TO THE LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP. THEY DETERMINED THAT THE SHIFTING CABLE HAD BROKE, & $350 LATER I GOT MY CAR BACK. THANK GOODNESS THIS HAPPENED IN MY GARAGE, BECAUSE IF THAT HAD HAPPENED ANYWHERE ELSE I OR SOMEONE ELSE COULD'VE BEEN INJURED OR CAUSED A WRECK IF THE CAR HAD ROLLED HAD I NOT NOTICED THE PROBLEM IN TIME. THE DEALERSHIP HAD SAID THAT THIS WAS THE 2ND FORD EDGE THAT THIS EXACT PROBLEM HAD OCCURRED WITH IN THE LAST MONTH. BIG CONCERN!

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers.
