2017 Ford F-150 Electrical Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the electrical system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Electrical reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

The vehicle experienced intermittent transmission-related drivability issues before the recall remedy was available. The vehicle had delayed/hard shifting, an intermittent wrench warning light, and a reduced power/limp mode condition where the transmission would not shift normally. The vehicle was inspected by an authorized Ford dealer on multiple occasions, including diagnostic visits on 10/09/2023, 05/12/2025, and 02/09/2026. Ford later issued recall 26S28 involving the powertrain control module/transmission control system, and the recall remedy was performed. After the recall repair was completed, the original drivability concern continued, including sluggish shifting and delayed engagement between gears. As a second attempted repair related to the wrench warning light and transmission concern, the dealer identified the possibility of a faulty transmission lead frame and reviewed replacement under the applicable coverage. However, the dealer refused to replace the lead frame because the related fault code was not currently present during their inspection. The intermittent nature of the failure causes the code to clear after the vehicle is restarted, making it difficult to capture during a dealer visit. I provided photographic proof showing the wrench warning light was present after picking up the vehicle on the same day the recall repair was supposedly completed. Despite this evidence and the continued symptoms, the lead frame replacement was not performed. The vehicle has not been involved in a crash, but the intermittent loss of normal transmission operation creates a safety concern, especially during acceleration, merging, or uphill driving. The issue has been reported to Ford and inspected by a Ford dealer. Repair documentation, photos, and service records are available.

my 6 speed transmition started shifting erratically. i took it to ford dealership and they did a pcm software download recall and it didnt help. the technition said he drove it and put on the wokorder. no codes stored issue not in leadframe. 1no codes stored to replace leadframe. transmition not shifting properly, most likely cause is internal clutch burnt. i asked what my next thing to do was and she said they would only change the transmition at my cost. this truck is shiftng in 5th and keeps shifting ranomly without showing on the gear panel. it does the same in 6th gear. between 4th and 5th it shifts real hard. all the symtoms of the lead frame recall and they said they wont touch it unless i put a new transmition in.

The April 2026 recall for the 6R80 transmission (2015- 2017 F-150s) involves a software update to prevent unintended downshifts to first gear, which, if left unaddressed, can cause significant damage to the transmission and torque converter. The recall aims to prevent this damage, not cause it, though the underlying defect—if it causes violent, abrupt downshifts-can lead to transmission failure, including issues with the torque converter. The pcm tells the transmission what gear to shift into. The trs is what signals the pcm to tell the transmission what gear to shift into. I am saying all of this because I am have a bad downshifting problem almost like it’s causing the transmission to slip it has been doing this for months and I think it is causing more failure in my truck. It is getting worse and worse and this is my only reliable vehicle to get to work. I’ve called ford and they told me to keep driving but I don’t feel safe. They also quoted me for a new transmission saying the problem will occur again if I get one so I don’t get the point in doing that but I think it’s causing my transmission to go out and my torque converter to go out. I am out of ideas and don’t know what to do. I cannot afford a new transmission and it’s unfair to me that it’s their problem and I got quoted a new transmission. Also if I keep driving it and it messes up they are going to deny that that recall isn’t the problem I’m not sure what to do.

My vehicle is currently subject to an open Ford transmission safety recall for which no repair remedy is available at this time. The vehicle is experiencing a recurring and dangerous failure while driving. Approximately twice per day, during my normal commute, all vehicle electronics suddenly shut off while the vehicle is in motion. At the same time, the wheels appear to lock up, causing a sudden loss of vehicle control and creating a significant crash risk. When the failure occurs, I am forced to immediately shift the transmission into neutral while the vehicle is still moving. After approximately 5 to 10 seconds, I can shift back into drive and continue operating the vehicle. However, vehicle electronics often remain inoperative for the remainder of the trip. This condition is occurring repeatedly and has become more frequent. The issue currently occurs approximately once during my drive to work and once during my drive home. My commute is approximately 20 minutes each way. The vehicle has not yet been involved in a crash, but I believe a crash is likely if this condition continues. The sudden loss of power, loss of electronics, and wheel lockup while driving creates an immediate safety hazard to myself, my passengers, and other motorists. I am submitting this complaint because the vehicle is subject to an active safety recall, the condition appears related to the recall, and no repair remedy is currently available. I believe the vehicle is unsafe to operate

While driving the car immediately downshifted and I could not accelerate. The Hill assist came on and service advance trac came on. This happened 3 times. The first time we towed it to the dealership April 17th, and they changed the oil and tested the battery secured wires and verified after the repair on April 26th. After we picked the truck up on April 26th it stalled on the highway on the home and we had it towed again. They kept it for 4 days drove it 80 miles and said nothing was wrong no repair was done or needed. On May 13 it stalled again in front of train tracks. Luckly I was able to stop and start it quickly to drive it to a near dealership. We picked up the truck today, and it stalled again on the way home. We drove it back to the dealership today, May 23rd, hopefully they can figure it out. We are again without a car for a long period of time. We have paid $1,964.10 in repairs that have not fixed the problem. The way the truck stops so suddenly is very dangerous as it happened once getting on the highway and once in front of a train track.

Vehicle: 2017 Ford F-150 2.7 EcoBoost, 6R80 transmission VIN: [XXX] While driving at highway speed (approximately 150 km/h / 93 mph) during an overtaking maneuver and moderate-to-heavy acceleration, the vehicle experienced a sudden harsh transmission event. The transmission abruptly entered limp mode and became stuck in 3rd gear. A wrench warning light appeared with the message “See Manual.” The vehicle immediately lost normal acceleration capability and could only continue driving in reduced-power mode. The malfunction occurred suddenly and without prior warning while traveling at high speed. This created a potentially dangerous traffic situation during highway overtaking. After stopping and restarting the vehicle, the transmission returned to normal operation. Diagnostic scan performed using FORScan retrieved DTC code: P0768 – Shift Solenoid D Electrical. The symptoms appear consistent with the currently announced Ford recall involving the 6R80 transmission lead frame / transmission range sensor issue causing unintended harsh downshifts or transmission malfunction. The vehicle is currently located in Poland after being imported from the United States, but the VIN is included in the active NHTSA/Ford recall database. No collision occurred, however the sudden transmission malfunction at highway speed created a serious safety concern. While driving about 60 mph on the highway, all warning lights on the dash suddenly came on and the truck immediately lost power/shut down. The wheels sputtered or somethting like that, not sure how to describe it. I was able to safely get off the road and restart the truck. After restarting, it drove normally again with no obvious issues. I recently received a recall notice describing very similar symptoms related to the transmission/lead frame issue, but the notice stated no remedy was yet available. This created a serious safety concern because the failure happened unexpectedly at highway speed. Here is the recall info: Issue Date 2026-04-14 Campaign 26S28/26V237

The front driver door lock/latch actuator is failing. The driver door does not lock or unlock using the key fob or the interior power lock button. The only way to lock or unlock the door is manually with the key or by pushing/pulling the lock from inside the vehicle. This issue started shortly after we had a historic/unusual cold freeze in Florida. The vehicle is kept outside, so it was exposed to the freezing temperatures. This creates a safety and security concern because the driver door power lock system does not work properly and may prevent the door from locking or unlocking normally when needed. The issue has not yet been inspected by a dealer or independent repair shop. No warning lights or messages appeared before the failure. The component is still installed on the vehicle and available for inspection upon request.

Took my 2017 Ford F-150 in for a diagnostic on May 8 2026 for wrench symbol check engine light and issues down shifting and sliding tires shop manager and technician claimed the vehicle is unsafe to drive and talked to the Service manager deemed the vehicle unsafe to drive wanted it grounded do to the safety concerns related to Recall 26S28 (PCM/TRS) stated the down shifting is cause catastrophic failure to all mechanical components transmission engine and rear end kidding the tires especially in wet weather the truck would cause a accident..cause the sliding of the tires..so my truck is at APPLE FORD OF LYNCHBURG GROUNDED as of May 9 2026 I still owe on the truck and have no ride dealer nor manufacture was willing to pay for a rental that cost $65 a day wanted me to pay then reimburse me once a remedy was available I cant afford that..1600 a month we are roughly 2 months away from hopefully a remedy being available stated by recall website.. so if my truck is showing all the signs of the described in the recall(26S28) has stated in it why is FORD not putting a DO NOT DRIVE on the recall for all these trucks if the technician seems them unsafe.. I shouldn't have to pay for a rental I cant afford cause ford is lacking a remedy and wont even buy it back cause of safety issues codes PO732 INCCORECT 2ND GEAR RATIO

I bought my 2017 Ford Shelby F150 (V8 5.0L, 6R80 transmission) used from a dealership in 2022, and noticed when depressing the Sport mode on the shifter, and hard acceleration, that the truck will suddenly downshift to a very dangerous gear while on the freeway. I heard the NTSA engineering analysis that is ongoing, and wanted to include my experience. Since I don't touch the Sport mode on the truck, it has not happened since. Ford needs to do a recall on this VERY dangerous issue.

While driving, my 2017 Ford F‑150 experienced a sudden loss of the Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor signal, causing the transmission to stay stuck in a higher gear and triggering the wrench light. The truck lost power and would not shift properly. A diagnostic scan showed two transmission codes: one for the OSS sensor and a second code indicating an intermittent electrical signal drop. I contacted a Ford dealer before the repair, described the symptoms, and asked for an estimate. The service advisor did not disclose any known issues and never called me back after saying he would check parts availability. These symptoms match the known failure pattern of the molded lead frame in the 6R80 transmission. My truck exhibited intermittent behavior, harsh shifting, and unsafe drivability. I had to pay $1,250 out of pocket to replace the lead frame to restore normal operation. I later learned that NHTSA has opened an Engineering Analysis into 2015–2017 F‑150 trucks for this exact issue (OSS signal loss due to internal electrical degradation of the lead frame). My vehicle’s symptoms, diagnostic codes, and required repair are consistent with the defect under investigation. This failure creates a safety hazard because the truck can suddenly lose the ability to accelerate or shift correctly, especially in traffic or at highway speeds. I am requesting that NHTSA include my vehicle in the investigation and that Ford be required to address this defect.

I seen there were some issues going around with the 6r80 and wanted to voice my concerns as I am having this issue as well. Intermittently ive been having issues where ill be driving, could be doing 65 down the highway. The wrench light pops up for a second and my truck slams down into 2nd or 3rd gear and goes into limp mode. This could happen at any given time without warning. This just happened to me on Monday, went and got a code reading, and have a code for the output shaft speed sensor. Although I was fine, it is certainly not okay the truck just decided to slam down into gear ultimately slowing down the vehicle tremendously fast while being in traffic. Could have caused an accident or worse.
