2017 Ford F-350 Sd Electrical Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the electrical system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Electrical reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Fire reported

I am filing this complaint regarding my Ford F-350, VIN [XXX], which caught fire on XXX. The truck had approximately 130,000 miles, which I consider low mileage for a properly maintained diesel Ford F-350. These trucks are known for long service life, and many Ford diesel trucks routinely remain in service for 20 years or more and exceed 250,000 miles when properly maintained. For that reason, I did not expect a sudden and catastrophic fire in a truck with only 130,000 miles. While driving, passing motorists alerted us the truck was on fire. The fire appeared to originate in the engine compartment and spread extremely rapidly. Within a very short period, the front of the truck was engulfed in flames and sustained catastrophic damage. Based on the speed and severity of the fire, I am concerned a failure in the engine compartment, fuel system, electrical system, or another vehicle component may have caused or contributed to the fire. This truck has been well maintained, kept clean, and responsibly cared for. I followed the manufacturer’s maintenance guidelines and did not expect a sudden engine-compartment fire. After the fire, I found reports of other F-350 fires and references to fire-related complaints and investigations. This raises serious concerns Ford may have known of a potential fire risk involving these trucks. This incident created major safety hazard not only to the occupants of the truck, but to other motorists and anyone nearby. Had passing drivers not alerted us, the outcome could have been far worse. The severity of the fire required a major emergency response, including multiple fire trucks and police. A vehicle fire of this magnitude presents an obvious risk of serious injury or death. I request NHTSA investigate Ford F-350 and vehicle fire incidents to determine whether a defect involving the fuel system, electrical system, or related parts may cause these trucks to catch fire without warning. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The owners manual states I have a tank capacity of 36 gallons. On E I can only fit about 26 gallons. If I were to take my average MPG and use the advertised 36 gallons to figure out how far I would run out of fuel and this would cause the vehicle to stall while driving. Ford is aware of this issue and knows how to fix it but declined to take care of the safety repair.

The truck has multiple leaks when it rains and water is getting inside of the truck through the back window, the sunroof and other places. Water recently go into the radio after a big rain storm and now the radio touch screen is not working. It’s making a crackling sound as if it’s going to start on fire. There was recall for this on other fords but not this specific model but is having the same exact issue. Ford needs to cover this as this is safety hazard. Multiple owners of this specific model have complained and there’s been no resolve.

The door ajar light will come on and remain on after starting the engine and while driving. This happens while in park and while driving. Even after opening and reclosing the doors before moving the door adjar warning light will not go away. If i get up to 55 mph it'll finally go off. The cabin lights remain on while the display light is on distracting at night and beeps while driving. The doors will not automatically lock, whe I try to lock them, the unlock even at speeds of 45mph. This has been an on going issue since we bought the truck. How am i supposed to know if the door is secure if I've checked them all before driving but the light will not go away. Everything I get to the dealership the lights are gone and they say they are unable to troubleshoot without the issue happening in the moment. Videos do not help they say. How am I going g to know the door will not fly open on the road?

The engine block heater cord is malfunctioning and it's also hanging down. I've tried over and over to get it to stay up and that is a problem. And also it's got a problem with a corroding and I plugged it in one time and it sparked so I need that fixed also. God I hope these people will finally do something. I've had a real problem with them and I spent a lot of money with them. This is the third vehicle I bought from Ford

There was a recall, NHTSA Recall 19V864, for an "unintended tailgate opening" when the electrical parts became wet. I had the recall performed, but the tailgate continues to fall when water gets in the tailgate. Ford needs to readdress this issue to replace the tailgate from an electrically operated to a manual tailgate. I had to start securing the tailgate with a device to keep it from falling down, especially when towing my RV. I am afraid it would have fallen down damaging it just like it did when I was towing my Son's RV causing over $600 damage to the RV cargo doors and damaging the Truck's tailgate. The tailgate has fallen down at least five (5) times since the recall repair. Last one was today during a thunderstorm. The truck was sitting still, other times driving down the road.

Back-UP and 360 degree cameras have failed and are malfunctioning. They have been replaced twice and safety issue still exists. The cameras are foggy and especially at night and are not very clear. Safety hazard has occurred on several occasions where a child, person or object behind the vehicle are not clearly seen. There is a safety recall for 2019 super duty trucks but not for the 2017 models. This safety issue is very common according to internet searches and several vehicles all have the same issues and concerns. God forbid that a child or person is hurt because of the low visibility of these cameras. It is not only the back-up rearview camera but all of the cameras that are part of the 360 degree view of visibility. The side cameras as well as the forward facing camera all have the same issue. Ford should recall and remedy this issue before anyone gets hurt or killed if it hasn't already happened because of this issue.

When my truck reaches 35 to 40 mph or hits a small bump it begins to shake violently in the steering wheel making it hard to control. I took it to a dealership who stated there was a recall part available, but after the repair the problem immediately began upon leaving their parking lot. My hill decent assist system now turns on and says there is a fault. The dealership was able to reproduce the problem, but stated I would need to pay for any further inspections and repairs out of pocket. I have not reported to my insurance as I didn't think it would be covered by them. The problem began this year in early July (2021) and has yet to be fixed.

HAD RECALL PERFORM FOR TAILGATE OPENING UNEXPECTEDLY ON MARCH 3, 2020. IN DECEMBER 2020, THE TAILGATE OPENED MULTIPLE TIMES WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AND WHILE REVERSING TO ATTACH A TRAILER CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE TAILGATE. WE CONTACTED KENDAL FORD IN MERIDIAN ID TO GET THIS PROBLEM RESOLVED AND THEY SAID FORD WOULD NOT COVER IT SINCE THE RECALL WAS PERFORMED AND IS NOW CLOSED. THEY WANT IN EXCESS OF $1500.00 TO FIX THE PROBLEM THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN FIXED WITH THE RECALL. FORD WILL NOT BUDGE IN COVERING THIS ISSUE WHICH WAS PART OF THE ORIGINAL RECALL. OBVIOUSLY THE RECALL FOR THE TAILGATE DID NOT WORK. PLEASE CAN YOU HAVE ANOTHER RECALL ISSUED FOR THIS TAILGATE ISSUE. IT IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TO HAVE ITEMS IN THE BED OF OUR TRUCK AND NOT KNOWING WHEN THE TAILGATE WILL OPEN AND CONTENTS FALL OUT CAUSING AN ACCIDENT.

THE POWER TAILGATE WILL RELEASE WHILE IN MOTION. I HAD THE FORD RECALL COMPLETED ONCE, I BELIEVE AROUND SEPTEMBER OF 2020. I JUST HAD THE TRUCK BACK TO THE DEALER BECAUSE THE POWER TAILGATE FIX DOES NOT APPEAR TO CORRECT THE ISSUE. THEY JUST REMOVED THE ORIGINAL RECALLED PARTS AND DID THE RECALL AGAIN ON MY TRUCK. THIS CURRENT WORK WAS COMPLETED ON 1/20/21. PLEASE FORCE FORD TO DO A REPROGRAM OF THE BODY CONTROL MODULE TO INCLUDE NOTIFICATION WHEN THE TAILGATE IS OPEN IN THE DISPLAY IN THE DASH. I WILL HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE IF THE REINSTALLATION OF THE RECALL WILL CORRECT THE ISSUE, MY THOUGHTS ARE NOT.

WE HAVE TOLD THE DEALERSHIP ABOUT THE PROBLEM A FEW TIMES BUT THEY REFUSE TO DO ANYTHING IF THEY CANNOT SEE IT HAPPENING. AFTER DRIVING TO THE DEALERSHIP, THE PROBLEM IS NOT VISIBLE BECAUSE WE HAVE TO TAKE THE HIGHWAY. THEY FINALLY SCHEDULED AN APPT. BUT WAITING UNTIL THE WARRANTY EXPIRED TO TELL US THEY HAD TIME FOR US TO BRING IT. IT HAS LITERALLY BEEN 3 YEARS THIS MONTH!

I TOOK MY TRUCK IN FOR A NONRELATED REPAIR. WHEN I WAS THERE I WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WAS A SAFETY RECALL ON TAILGATE OPENING. I NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH IT OPENING BUT SINCE IT WAS ALREADY AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR OTHER REPAIRS, I OKAYED THE RECALL REPAIR ON THE TAILGATE OPENING ON ITS ON. NOW SINCE I HAVE HAD THE REPAIR DONE ON MY TRUCK THE TAILGATE OPENS ON ITS OWN NOW. I HAVE TAKEN IT BACK SEVERAL TIMES FOR THE PROBLEM. BUT I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT IF THEY CAN'T VERIFY THE PROBLEM THEY CAN'T FIX IT. BUT I CAN'T MAKE IT DO IT ON COMMAND. IT DOES IT ON ITS OWN ONCE EVERY 7 TO 14 DAYS. CAN I GET HELP ON GETTING THIS PROBLEM REPAIRED? MOST OF THE TIME WHEN THIS HAPPENS I GET INTO MY TRUCK, START IT AND GO TO BACK UP. I GET WARNING TONE AND NOTICE THAT THE TAILGATE IS DOWN. I'M WORRIED THAT I COULD BE PULLING A TRAILER WHEN THIS HAPPENS AND IT DAMAGES MY TAILGATE AND TRAILER.

MY 2017 FORD F-350DRW TAILGATE KEEPS OPENING WHEN DRIVING OR STATIONARY. IT HAS OPENED AT LEAST 10 TIMES IN THE PAST YEAR AND AT LEAST 15 TIMES SINCE PURCHASING. TRYING TO CONVINCE FORD DEALERSHIPS THAT THE TAILGATE WAS UP, AND I DID NOT FORGET TO SECURE OR TOUCHED ONE OF THE BUTTONS TO RELEASE THE LOCK. ON NOVEMBER 21, 2019, WHILE TOWING ON I-44 IN OKLAHOMA, OUR 5TH WHEEL RV, THE TAILGATE OPENED AND DAMAGED THE TAILGATE ALONG WITH THE TWO DOORS OF THE RV. I ALWAYS CHECK MY TRUCK AND RV AFTER EACH SERVICE STOP. I CHECKED AT THE PREVIOUS STOP PRIOR TO LAWTON, OKLAHOMA AND THE TAILGATE WAS UP. I STOPPED AT THE LAST SERVICE STATION ON I-44 PRIOR TO ENTERING TEXAS AND SAW THE TAILGATE DOWN AND THE DAMAGE. UNTIL I GET MY TRUCK REPAIRED, I HAVE HAD TO INSTALL BLACK BUNGIE CORDS TO KEEP THE TAILGATE FROM FALLING.

I HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE DEALER TWICE, THEY CANNOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM, NOR FIND ANYTHING WRONG. I HAVE CALLED FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE 3 TIMES, AND HAVE DONE WHAT THEY TOLD ME TO DO, BUT THEY DO NOT FOLLOW THROUGH WITH WHAT THEY TELL ME THEY ARE GOING TO DO. TRUCK TAILGATE RANDOMLY OPENS WHEN VEHICLE IS BEING DRIVEN. I HAVE OWNED THIS TRUCK FOR 6 MONTHS AND THE RANDOM OPENING HAS OCCURED 4 TIMES WHEN DRIVING. WITHOUT ANY NOTICE OR WARNING THE TRUCK TAILGATE OPENS WHEN THE VEHICLE IS BEING DRIVEN. THE MOST RECENT OCCURRENCE CAUSED THE LOSS OF CARGO ON THE HIGHWAY. IT APPEARS THE FOB IS SOMEHOW DOUBLE CLICKED WHEN IN THE DRIVER'S POCKET CAUSING THE TAILGATE TO OPEN (FOB HAS TAILGATE REMOTE OPENING FEATURE). THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN SINCE THE VEHICLE OPERATOR HAS NO WAY OF KNOWING THE TAILGATE HAS OPENED. THERE SHOULD BE AN INTERLOCK THAT PREVENTS THE AUTOMATIC OPENING OF THE TAILGATE WHEN THE VEHICLE IS BEING DRIVEN.

REAR TAILGATE OPENS BY ITSELF. UNKNOWN WHEN IT OCCURS AS I HAVE A CAMPER SHELL WHICH PREVENTS THE TAILGATE FROM COMPLETELY OPENING. THIS HAS OCCURRED 40-50 TIMES RANDOMLY SINCE PURCHASING THE TRUCK NEW IN AUGUST 2017. NOTIFIED THE DEALER OF ISSUE AND FORD TSB-2196 BUT WAS INFORMED THAT BECAUSE MY VEHICLE WAS PRODUCED AFTER JUNE 2017, IT DOES NOT APPLY TO MY PROBLEM. UNLESS THEY CAN DUPLICATE THE ISSUE, THEY WILL NOT ADDRESS THE ISSUE. NO DAMAGE HAS OCCURRED BECAUSE OF THE CAMPER SHELL PREVENTING TAILGATE FROM DROPPING.

I'M APRIL OF 2018 THE ELECTRIC TAILGATE ON MY 2017 FORD F-350 STARTED OPENING ON ITS OWN ANYTIME AND ANYWHERE. IT DID NOT MATTER IF THE TRUCK WAS IN PARK OR IN GEAR BUT DID NOT OPEN AT SPEEDS ABOVE 10 MPH OR SO. AFTER GOING TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP IN ELKHART IN. I WAS TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING THAT COULD BE DONE BECAUSE IF THEY UNHOOKED THE WIRING L COULD NOT OPEN THE TAILGATE. I PULL A 5TH WHEEL TRAILER WITH THE TRUCK SO THIS WAS NOT AN OPTION IF L WANTED A TAILGATE. I TRIED TO WATCH THE BEST L COULD BEFORE TAKING OFF TO MAKE SURE THE TAILGATE WAS CLOSED WHEN L WOULD MOVE THE TRUCK. I DID NOT NOTICE THAT IT HAD COME DOWN AGAIN AND MADE A TURN WITH THE TRAILER HOOKED TO THE TRUCK. NEEDLESS TO SAY THE TAILGATE WAS CRUSHED BEYOND USE AND BROKE A TWILIGHT LENS AT THE SAME TIME. AGAIN L WENT TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP IN ELKHART IN AND WAS TOLD THEY HAD NO REPORTS OF PROBLEMS AND THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO ABOUT IT. THE TAILGATE HAS NOT BEEN REPLACED DO TO THE FACT L AM SURE THERE IS STILL AN IS SURE.
