Recalls, owner-reported complaints, investigations and safety data

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FAILURE ON MY 1995 INFINITI G20. THE FAILURE OCCURRED WITHOUT WARNING. VEHICLE HAS BEEN PROPERLY MAINTAINED. I WROTE THE INFINITI CONSUMER AFFAIRS DIVISIONS BUT WAS INFORMED THEY DO NOT KEEP RECORDS OF HOW MANY TRANSMISSION FAILURE OCCURRED FOR THIS MODEL AND IF THEY DID THEY WOULD NOT RELEASE THE INFORMATION. I WOULD LIKE TO FIND OUT IF THIS TRANSMISSION FAILURE IS A SYSTEMIC DEFECT FOR THIS YEAR AND MAKE OF CAR.*AK

I AM THE OWNER OF A 1995 INFINITI G20 (VIN# [XXX]) WITH 110,135 MILES. ONE DAY, UPON OPENING MY TRUNK TO PLACE GROCERIES IN IT, THE TRUNK SLAMMED DOWN ON THE BACK OF MY HEAD AND NECK WHILE BENDING OVER TO PUT SOME ITEMS DEEP INTO IT. THE TRUNK SLAMMED DOWN WITH SUCH FORCE THAT I ENDED UP WITH A CONCUSSION AND BRUISED SPINE PER 2 DOCTORS THAT EXAMINED ME AFTERWARDS. THE 2 SUPPORTING TRUNK GAS LIFTS WERE WORN, HOWEVER, THEY SHOULD NOT HAVE PRODUCED A FORCE GREAT ENOUGH TO CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY OR HARM WHEN THE TRUNK IS IN THE FULLY OPEN POSITION. I FEEL THAT THIS IS AN ENGINEERING SAFETY DEFECT ON THE PART OF INFINITI/NISSAN AND SOMETHING SHOULD BE DONE TO RECTIFY THIS HORRIBLE SAFETY PROBLEM. THIS TRUNK SHOULD BE CONSIDERED HAZARDOUS. *NLM INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

THE FIRST REPORT HAS TO DO WITH THE CLUTCH SYSTEM. AT 35,000 MILES ON ROUTINE INSPECTION MY DEALER INFORMED ME THAT CLUTCH CYLINDER NEAR THE CLUTCH PEDAL WAS SEIZING AND CAUSING AN ANNOYING SQUEAK. IT TURNS OUT THE THAT FAILURE OF THIS CYLINDER CAUSED THE PRESSURE PLATE TO NOT RELEASE FROM THE CLUTCH PLATE AS IT NORMALLY SHOULD WHEN TAKEING THE FOOT OFF THE CLUTCH PEDAL. THIS CAUSED THE CLUTCH DISK/PLATE TO EXCESSIVELY WEAR TO THE POINT IT NEEDED REPLACING. MY VEHICLE NOW HAS 59,000 MILES AND THE CYLINDER NEAR THE CLUTCH PEDAL IS SQUEEKING AGAIN... MAKING ME THINK IT IS FAILING AGAIN. I DON'T THINK IT IS NORMAL FOR ME TO REPLACE THIS PART AT MY EXPENSE EVERY 30,000 MILES. I THINK THIS IS A POORLY DESIGNED PART AND THINK THAT INFINITY/NISSAN SHOULD FIND A REPLACEMENT PART THAT DOES NOT FAIL SO OFTEN. THE COST TO ME TO REPLACE THIS EVERYTIME THE CYLINDER FAILS IS IN THE AREA OF $800.00. THE COST INVOLVES THE CYLINDER NEEDING REPLACEMENT AND WELL AS THE TEARDOWN OF THE TRANMISSION SYSTEM TO REPLACE THE CLUTCH DISK/PLATE.*AK

EXTERIOR CLEANING INFORMATION SERVICE INFORMATION When cleaning the exterior of an Infiniti vehicle, damage may occur when using a cleaner with too high of an alkaline concentration. - Always refer to the Appearance and care section of the related owner?s manual. - Not all cleaners are created equal. - Many cleaners come in concentrated form. - Alkaline cleaners (cleaners with a high pH value) can cause spots on paint and trim when not used as directed. - Some commercial car washes use cleaners with a high pH value. - When using cleaners that meet the conditions defined in the Appearance and care section, be sure to carefully follow the cleaner?s directions. - When finished cleaning/washing, rinse thoroughly with clean water. IMPORTANT: Damage to paint, glass, bright metal, or any other exterior surface caused by using improper cleaning products is not covered under warranty. Always refer to the Paint Incident Identification Manual (PIIM) and Assurance Products Reference Manual (APRM). Follow the guidelines in the PIIM and APRM for non-warrantable exterior body, glass, or painted surface quality issues. To access the PIIM and APRM, login to nnanet.com: - For the PIIM, select: MY LINKS > Warranty > Paint Incident Identification Manual - For the APRM, select: MY DOCUMENTS > Warranty > APRM See further information in this bulletin.

PLASTIC INTERIOR TRIM PROTECTIVE COVERING REMOVAL SERVICE INFORMATION Vehicles are delivered with plastic interior trim protective covering on the front and rear seats, front and rear door panel finishers, steering wheel, and sun visors (see examples on page 2). When removing the protective covering, care must be used to avoid scuffs, scrapes, cuts, and other abrasive contact to interior trim components. DO NOT use sharp objects like razor blades, box cutters, knives, etc. when removing the plastic interior trim protective covering. IMPORTANT: All soft trim described in this bulletin is on automatic return to NNA. Any trim found damaged in the way described in this bulletin will be charged back to the dealer.

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
