Safety investigations
NHTSA inquiries naming this vehicle. An investigation is not a finding of a defect.
TIRE PUNCTURE
ODI received a report that the subject trailer (Jayco Travel Trailer equipped with dual axles, mounting a total of four tires), towed at highway speeds by a properly equipped 1996 Chevrolet Tahoe experienced blow-out of both left side trailer tires after being passed by a semi truck (traveling an extimated 15 mph faster). It is believed that the trailer's two left tires blew out after being contacted by the trailer's shock absorber brackets, this contact being induced by lateral movement of the trailer on its suspension. This suspension travel has been attributed to the passing semi truck's turbulence acting on the trailer. The tire blow-out caused a jack-knife crash of the Tahoe/trailer conbination.Examination of one of the trailer's left side tires shows a series of gouges located circumferentially on the inner sidewall in a location corresponding to one of the shock absorber brackets.A Preliminary Evaluation has been opened to further evaluate the facts associated with this incident, and to determine the possibility of occurrence of similar incidents in the future.

DT: THE CONSUMER OWNED A 1998 JAYCO 5TH WHEEL EAGLE SERIES. HE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE SECOND HAND. THE FRONT PANEL SEPARATED. WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH. THE ENTIRE DRIVER'S SIDE PANEL PEELED BACK. THERE WAS A SEPARATION FROM THE FIBERGLASSAND THE WOOD. THE CONSUMER CALLED JAYCO, AND THEY TOLD HIM IT HAD A TWO YEAR WARRANTY. THEY HAD NO INFORMATION ON WHY THIS OCCURRED. CONSUMER STATED HE COULD SEE THE PANEL BULGING. ALSO, COULD FEEL MOISTURE WHICH WAS CAUSED BY THE EXTREME ARIZONA WEATHER CONDITIONS. THE CONSUMER STATED THAT WHEN THE PANELING CAME OFFONE COULD SEE THE WOOD FRAMING AND INSULATION. BUBBLING AND SEPARATION WAS NOTICEABLE ON THE LEFT PANEL AND IN THE REAR. THE PANEL SLIPPED OUT OF THE SEAM. THERE WERE NO SCREWS. IT WAS JUST GLUED TO A METAL FRAME. *AK

Manufacturer communications
A bulletin sent by a manufacturer to its dealers. Not a recall, and repairs are not necessarily free.

JAYCO AND ENTEGRA COACH STORAGE TIPS. INSTRUCTIONS FOR STORING JAYCO AND ENTEGRA COACH DIESEL PUSHERS.
EQUIPMENT; EQUIPMENT:MECHANICAL:SLIDE-IN CAMPER; STRUCTURE
(SRP) Standard repair procedure for crack forming at the front bottom corner of the off door side (ODS) or door side (DS) Front Slide Out on certain Jayco 5th wheel travel trailers.
Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
Compare model years
Complaint and recall counts across every year of this model
Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
