Recalls, owner-reported complaints, investigations and safety data

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

1,660 units potentially affected
The defect: Jayco, Inc. (Jayco) is recalling certain 2014-2018 Precept motorhomes built on Ford F53 chassis. The hydraulic lines may have been incorrectly routed too close to the exhaust without a heat shield.
The risk: Incorrect routing of the hydraulic line can cause the line to melt from the exhaust heat, resulting in a loss of braking, increasing the risk of a crash or fire.
The remedy: Jayco will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and correct the hydraulic line routing as necessary and install a heat shield, free of charge. The recall began November 14, 2019. Owners may contact Jayco customer service at 1-800-517-9137. Jayco's number for this recall is 9903440.

The defect: Jayco, Inc. (Jayco) is recalling certain model year 2016 Alante and Precept motorhomes manufactured August 10, 2015, to March 15, 2016. The wiring for the entrance steps may be incorrectly installed, and as a result, the steps may unexpectedly retract.
The risk: If the steps retract on their own, a person trying to enter or exit the motorhome may fall, increasing their risk of injury.
The remedy: Jayco will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the entrance step wiring, correcting the wiring as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on January 18, 2017. Owners may contact Jayco customer service at 1-800-517-9137. Jayco's number for this recall is 9903340.

THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE, BUT THE VEHICLE STILL VEERED LEFT AND RIGHT WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT CALLED THE JAYCO MANUFACTURER AT (574) 825-5861 AND WAS INFORMED THAT IT WAS A FORD ISSUE. THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED TO TAKE THE RECREATIONAL VEHICLE TO A FORD DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO HEMBORG FORD (1900 HAMNER AVE, NORCO, CA 92860 (951) 737-6151), BUT A FAILURE COULD NOT BE FOUND. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TAKEN TO REDLANDS TRUCK AND RV PERFORMANCE CENTER (510 AMIGOS DR, REDLANDS, CA 92373 (909) 792-0314) WHERE AN ALIGNMENT WAS COMPLETED AND A SAFE-T PLUS STEERING CONTROL UNIT WAS INSTALLED ALONG WITH A REAR TRAC BAR TO STOP THE VEERING FROM LEFT TO RIGHT. THE CONTACT WAS REIMBURSED FOR THE ALIGNMENT BY THE JAYCO MANUFACTURER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE PERSISTED, BUT WAS NOT AS BAD. THE FOLLOWING YEAR, THE ISSUE RECURRED WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE RECENT FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 3,000.

SINCE JUNE, 2016, MY BRAND NEW JAYCO PRECEPT 31UL MOTORHOME HAS BEEN AT THE MANTECA RV DEALERSHIP WHILE MULTIPLE ISSUES ARE BEING ADDRESSED. WHEN DRIVING IT, THE RV CONSTANTLY WANDERED ON THE ROAD LANE, REQUIRING CONSTANT CORRECTION TO KEEP IT TRACKING IN A STRAIGHT LINE. THE DANGEROUS PROBLEM WITH STEERING WAS REFERRED TO AN ALIGNMENT SHOP IN MANTECA. THE RECOMMENDED FIX WAS REPAIR OF THE CAMBERS. THIS HAS RESULTED IN THE STEERING WHEEL NOW OUT OF PLACE. THIS STEERING WHEEL PROBLEM WAS DISCUSSED FORD, THE MANUFACTURER OF THE CHASSIS, AS JAYCO FELT FORD SHOULD "FIX" IT. FORD SAID IT WAS FINE WHEN SOLD TO JAYCO. IT IS NOT THEIR RESPONSIBILITY TO "FIX" IT. JAYCO IS NOW SAYING IT'S NOT THEIR RESPONSIBILITY EITHER. THE STEERING WHEEL WAS IN NORMAL STEERING POSITION UNTIL THE ALIGNMENT SHOP DID THE CAMBER REPAIR. IT IS JAYCO'S RESPONSIBILITY TO REPAIR THIS. THE STEERING PROBLEM IS NOT THE ONLY PROBLEM WITH MY RV. IT IS ALSO AN ISSUE FOR OTHER OWNERS OF THE 2016 JAYCO PRECEPT 31UL. IT APPEARS TO BE A DEFECT IN THE MANUFACTURING. I QUESTION WHETHER THIS CONSTRUCTION WILL EVER BE COMPLETELY ABLE TO WORK AS EXPECTED. WHEN WE HAD THE USE OF THE MOTORHOME FOR FOUR DAYS IN AUGUST (WHILE WE WERE STILL WAITING FOR THE ADDITIONAL PROBLEMS TO BE CORRECTED), WE DROVE TO SOUTHERN OREGON. AT ONE POINT IN THE TRIP, WE HEARD SEVERAL VERY LOUD BANGING NOISES - LIKE BOLTS POPPING - UNDERNEATH THE PASSENGER SIDE IN THE MOTOR LOCATION. I DON'T TRUST THE CONSTRUCTION OF THIS MOTORHOME. IT IS VERY APPARENT THAT QUALITY CONTROL WAS COMPLETELY MISSING WHEN THIS RV WAS MANUFACTURED. WE HAVE USED IT FOR FIVE DAYS TOTAL. THE REST OF THE TIME, IT HAS BEEN AT MANTECA RV. NOW JAYCO IS REFUSING RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE STEERING WHEEL PROBLEM. WE HAVE NOT DRIVEN THE RV SINCE THE CAMBER "FIX" THAT HAS NOW CAUSED THE STEERING WHEEL SITUATION. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

Units built on a Ford F53 2014-2020 chassis require an inspection of the engine air cleaner main inlet and the front -facing portion of the air cleaner for an article in these areas. When found, removal is required.

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
