The defect: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2020-2024 Ford Escape and 2021-2024 Lincoln Corsair plug-in hybrid vehicles. A manufacturing defect in one or more of the high voltage battery cells may result in an internal short circuit and battery failure.
The risk: Battery failure can cause a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash. Battery failure can also increase the risk of a fire.
The remedy: Dealers will update the battery energy control module (BECM) and hybrid powertrain control module (HPCM), free of charge. Owners are advised to only use "Auto EV" mode and will be instructed by mail to limit the maximum charge of the battery until the remedy has been completed. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, and instructions to limit the maximum charge of the battery were mailed December 8, 2025. Additional letters will be sent once the final remedy is available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 25SC4. Vehicles in this recall were previously recalled under 24V954 and will need to have the new remedy performed. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov on November 18, 2025.

NHTSA received a petition on or about July 18, 2022, requesting that Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 141 be applied to all electric and hybrid vehicles operating in the United States. The petition can be reviewed at NHTSA.gov under ODI Number 11486072. FMVSS 141 establishes performance requirements for pedestrian alert sounds for motor vehicles. The standard applies to hybrid and electric vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,536 KG or less or are defined as low-speed vehicles. The standard became fully applicable to all such vehicles manufactured on or after March 1, 2021.On January 27, 2023, NHTSA opened Defect Petition (DP) 22-005 to evaluate the subject matter described in the petition. On June 24, 2023 and as supplemented on June 25, 2023, the petitioner notified NHTSA he was withdrawing his petition. The petitioner indicated that, based on his review of data, there is no justification for asserting potential benefits that could be derived from actions sought by my petition. Based on the petitioner's withdrawal, DP22-005 is closed. Closure of this DP does not represent a determination by NHTSA regarding the subject matter of the petition.

I was driving down the highway at around 70 mph, with one passenger. There had been no indications that anything was wrong with the vehicle. Then I noticed the car slowing down though I had not let up on the gas, which I now understand is called 'limp mode'. The screen said 'service vehicle soon'. It kept slowing down while I carefully pulled to the side of the road. Thankfully I had been in the right lane. This was not a very safe place to be, relatively close to an overpass. I turned off the car and let it rest for a few minutes. Then I started it and tried the gas. It did speed up to about 35 mph, so I kept going to try and get past the area of high traffic and little shoulder. Once I got past the overpass, I pulled over again. I stopped, let it rest and then started up again. Still it only went up to about 35 mph, but I was able to get to an exit and pull into a parking lot. I then called a tow truck and eventually they took the car to the closest Lincoln dealership. After reviewing the car, the dealership's service center said they did not see anything wrong with the vehicle and could not reproduce the issue. They did say that records showed a similar incident had happened in May 2025, under a different owner. They suggested I take the vehicle home and come back if it happened again. Then on July 12th, I was driving down I75 again, this time in the left lane and with my son in the car, and the same thing happened. The car started slowing down and the screen said 'service vehicle soon'. I was able to pull off at the next exit and let the car rest. We happened to be only 1.6 miles from the Lincoln dealership, so I carefully drove the car there and left it since they were closed. They later said that the service bulletin suggested that if they could drive the car 4 times without an issue, they could clear the issue. I looked further into it and found that there is an open recall on the vehicle, with no remedy, Open Safety Recall 25SC4. I do NOT feel safe.

Our 2022 Corsair Hybrid has been at Haldeman Ford in Kutztown, PA since October 29th. We will not drive it to our house because it is unsafe at any speed. The engine in this car has suddenly failed at least seven or eight times while being driven. At least three of these failures occurred when being driven by different Haldeman Ford technicians. They saw nothing that would explain the engine’s sudden catastrophic failure. The technicians cannot find out what is wrong with the vehicle and agree that the vehicle is dangerous to drive. Prior recall for engine failure stated that the car was not to be driven but also not to be plugged in because there was risk of fire. That recall is proof that the car was a lemon from the day it left the factory. It has been gently driven and has less than 16,000 miles. If the Corsair were to be said to be “repaired” at this point it would then require us to then act as crash test dummies with no guarantee that the engine would not stop suddenly - resulting in catastrophic injury or death. I could not ethically sell this car going forward. NOTE: On November 20, 2025 the NHTSA issued Manufacturer Recall Number 25SC4 - NHTSA Recall Number 25V789. This recall is for a manufacturing defect in the high voltage battery cells to cause an internal short circuit. This recall cites lost of motive power with increased risks in both crash and fire issues. This car has had several recalls in the past as well also dealing with fire and safety problems from the factory.

Certain 2021-2025 Model Year Corsair Vehicles- Flat Tow Rating Change On the affected vehicles, documentation in the owner’s manual incorrectly states that 2021 – 2025 Corsair PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles) can be recreationally flat towed. You cannot recreationally flat tow these vehicles with all wheels on the ground because damage to the powertrain may occur. All 2023-2025 model year vehicles will require dealers to perform a software update to the Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) to install an updated digital owner’s manual. This action may require updates to other modules on the vehicle to receive the correct software.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Some 2020-2026 Escape and 2021-2026 Corsair PHEV vehicles may require inspection of the high voltage battery due to rust, scratches, curb strikes, road debris, or other minor damage. Section 414-03A of the Workshop Manual (WSM) has recently been updated to improve diagnostics for such damage and provides a list of low-level serviceable components for instances where replacement of the high voltage battery assembly is not warranted. Refer to WSM, Section 414-03A High Voltage Battery, Mounting and Cables > Diagnosis and Testing > High Voltage Battery Minor Damage Inspection. The Ford New Vehicle Limited Warranty covers manufacturing defects resulting from a defect in factory supplied materials or workmanship. Please refer to the Warranty section WHAT IS NOT COVERED, which includes curb strikes and accidents.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM; ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

Some 2020-2023 Escape, 2021-2023 Corsair vehicles equipped with 2.5L engine full hybrid electric vehicle (FHEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) powertrain and 2022-2023 Maverick vehicles equipped with 2.5L engine FHEV powertrain may exhibit a condition where the 12V battery voltage is low or discharged with diagnostic trouble code (DTC) U3003:62 stored in the direct current/direct current (DC/DC) converter control module. The vehicle may also exhibit DTC U3003:16 and/or U3000:04 stored in the DC/DC converter control module. This may be due to an open in the 300 amp high-current fuse F4 located in the high-current battery junction box (BJB). To correct this condition, refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 414-05 > Pinpoint Test H to verify the 300 amp high-current fuse condition. If the high-current fuse is found to be open, replace the high-current fuse per the application listing in the parts catalog. Recharge and test the 12v battery. For repairs under warranty, use the base part number of the component that caused the damage to the fuse.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Some 2020-2022 Aviator and 2021-2022 Corsair hybrid vehicles built on or before 01-Apr-2022 may exhibit charging concerns with the Lincoln dual-voltage charging cord (TurboCord). This style of charging cord can be indentified by one of the 220V prongs positioned sideways. If the vehicle charges properly using a 110/120V non-ground fault interrupter (GFI) outlet with the original 220V adapter removed, replace the adapter (part number VLC5Z-10B706-B) alone. This replacement adapter is available from accessories.lincoln.com > keyword search Turbo Cord, or through the local Ford Authorized Distributor (FAD). Discoloration of the 220V adapter or dual voltage charging cord could indicate a problem with the electrical outlet used; if so a licensed electrician should inspect.
