Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.

I own a 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQB 300 4MATIC. My vehicle has multiple unresolved high-voltage battery safety recalls. Recall 25V050/MBUSA campaign 2025040005 concerns a potential internal battery-cell short circuit and fire risk. I had the BMS software update performed, but Mercedes later issued recall 26V073 because the software remedy was not considered sufficient for all affected vehicles. Recall 26V073 requires complete high-voltage battery replacement. Until that repair is completed, Mercedes instructs owners to park outside and away from structures and limit charging to 80%. My vehicle also shows recall 25V487/MBUSA campaign 2025070009 as pending. This recall concerns a battery busbar connection that could cause sudden loss of propulsion without warning, increasing the risk of a crash. Despite the ongoing fire-risk and loss-of-propulsion concerns, I have not been provided a firm, VIN-specific date for the battery replacement. The safety restrictions significantly limit my ability to use and safely park the vehicle. I am concerned that the permanent remedy remains unavailable while I continue to make lease payments.

I am the owner of a 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQB that has been identified as being affected by the current high-voltage battery safety recall. I recently contacted my authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer regarding the recall and was informed that the recall is currently pending for my vehicle and that the permanent remedy is not expected to begin until approximately December. I understand that the interim safety guidance associated with this recall includes limiting charging to 80% and parking the vehicle outside and away from structures. I have a significant concern regarding the parking instruction. My vehicle is normally parked in an attached garage at my condominium. The garage is connected to my residence, and my HOA does not permit me to park the vehicle outside. Therefore, I do not have a practical way to comply with the instruction to park outside and away from structures. I specifically raised this issue with the service department. I was told verbally that I could continue parking the vehicle in my garage “at my discretion.”

The affected component is the high-voltage traction battery and related battery management and bus-bar connection systems. My vehicle is available for inspection upon request. I am reporting a safety concern because my vehicle is subject to NHTSA Recall 25V050, which identifies a risk that the high-voltage battery could fail internally and cause a fire while parked or driving. It is also subject to NHTSA Recall 25V487, which identifies a defect involving the high-voltage battery bus-bar connection that may cause a sudden loss of drive power without warning. A battery fire could endanger vehicle occupants and people or property near a parked vehicle. A sudden loss of propulsion while driving could increase the risk of a crash. I have not personally experienced a vehicle fire or a sudden loss of drive power. However, I am being asked to continue operating and making lease payments on a vehicle with identified high-voltage battery safety defects and no completed effective remedy available for my vehicle. The currently available guidance limits charging to 80%, which reduces the vehicle’s usable range and practical value. The vehicle’s recall status has been confirmed through NHTSA and Mercedes-Benz recall information. To my knowledge, no dealer repair has been completed that eliminates these safety concerns. The vehicle has not been inspected by police, insurance representatives, or an independent service center in connection with an incident because no crash, fire, or loss-of-power event has occurred. Before any failure, I have not observed a warning lamp, warning message, or other battery-related symptom. My concern is that Recall 25V487 describes a potential sudden loss of drive power without warning, and Recall 25V050 identifies a potential battery-fire risk, including while the vehicle is parked.

Vehicle: 2023 Mercedes‑Benz EQB VIN: [XXX] MBUSA Case #: XXX NHTSA Recall #: 26V073000 Mercedes‑Benz USA has mishandled recall 26V073000 (fire hazard) and left me without transportation. I was told the vehicle is unsafe to drive, which has caused significant anxiety, panic attacks, and ongoing stress because I have no safe way to commute or manage daily responsibilities. MBUSA repeatedly promised a loaner vehicle, but the dealership stated they were never contacted, had no instructions, and had no loaner available. MBUSA later said I could receive a rental car “upon eligible dealership,” but they did not specify which dealership, and after calling multiple Mercedes‑Benz locations, all confirmed they had no information, no authorization, and no process for rental reimbursement or recall support. MBUSA has provided conflicting and misleading information, failed to coordinate with dealerships, and failed to provide transportation during a fire‑hazard recall. This has caused loss of use, mental distress, and safety exposure. I request investigation into MBUSA for failure to properly administer recall 26V073000, failure to provide transportation during a safety recall, and misrepresentation of recall remedies. There is a recall associated with this model that causes catastrophic stoppage without any ability to drive. My vehicle VIN does not have a recall according to your site. Despite this, my vehicle catastrophically stopped multiple times. It was repaired at least three times and still stopped in the middle of the highway. My partner and I were stopped on I-85S with no ability to move, honk, put on hazards. Cars zoomed past at full speed. I called 911 as we braced for impact. We are lucky to be alive and now suffer from severe trauma. They eventually closed the entire highway and dragged the vehicle to the shoulder almost 30 min later. Mbusa was aware of this defect before rejecting my lemon law claim, but my vehicle was not included apparently. I feel more investigation is needed because it seems very likely my vehicle should be included in the recall. I appreciate your attention to this matter.

STEERING

Complaint During part of the steering movement, it feels heavier or more difficult to steer in the same spot every time. OR Rattling, humming, dry sliding/gravel noise from the electric steering system when steering (see attachment). Complaint does not impact the ability to safely steer or control the vehicle. Cause Ball screw drive (KGT) of electric steering damaged by: 1. External force due to: ‑ Hitting the curb/posts with the front wheels. ‑ Driving over obstacles (e.g. pothole/ threshold/ speed bump/ gully) at an inappropriate speed. 2. Corrosion/ water ingress through a damaged boot (see attachment). ‑ Cracks (1) ‑ High pressure cleaner (2) ‑ Animal bite (3) See various examples listed in the attachments for examples of outside influence. Remedy Remove boot clamps closest to steering gear housing on both left and right (as seen in "Steering Rack Boot Clamp Location"). Pull back boot and inspect for rust, broken end stops, water, or any other anomalies. Replace electric steering. Note: Steering gears replaced due to outside influence or damage must not be claimed under warranty!

Complaint Tailgate opens unintentionally. Cause Accidental or unnoticed activation of the button to open the tailgate on the vehicle key. EXAMPLE: when stored in trouser pocket, handbag etc. Remedy As of the 6th generation, the vehicle key can be recoded so that the tailgate no longer opens as a result of a long press on the button, but by double‑clicking on the button instead. This reduces the likelihood of the button being activated accidentally or unintentionally. The recoding can be carried out as follows: 1. Add SA Code O19 into VeDoc (O for Oscar, not "zero") • an XSS ticket may be necessary to add the SA code 2. Perform SCN coding of EIS N73 control unit 3. Deactivate the vehicle key (a successful deactivation is indicated by the LED lighting up 2x briefly and then 1x for a long period). 4. Place the vehicle key in the storage compartment on the key symbol and turn on the ignition. IMPORTANT: all other vehicle keys must be outside the recognition range of the vehicle when doing this! Perform steps 3 and 4 successively for all vehicle keys. Notes: 6th, 7th and 8th generation keys can be deactivated as follows: Up to modification year 22/1 by double clicking the "Lock button" As of modification year 22/1, by press and holding the “Lock button", then double‑click the “Unlock button" at the same time. On model series 167, the storage compartment with the key symbol is located in the armrest. The SCN coding from the EZS is only transferred correctly to the vehicle key under the following conditions: Only one vehicle key is located in the vehicle, this key has been deactivated and it is positioned on the marking in the storage compartment for the data transfer. The costs for this adaptation are to be borne by the customer. For the newer BR 174, 178, 244, 248, 520, and 540, a software update must be initiated, as there is no way to perform SCN coding.

Picture 2 Incorrect notification Example “Unable to unlock charging cable. Picture 3 Incorrect settings of charge interruption or pause. (If applicable) Cause - The Customer shares their Mercedes me credentials (password) with a third-party application, for example, a wall box application. This causes the Mercedes Benz backend server to receive random requests to reset the maximum SOC, departure time, charging pause, etc. - Charging settings are set incorrectly, for example, incorrect departure time, charging program, charging interruption/ pause, etc. Remedy The remedies below may vary depending on the customer complaint. Refer to the remedy that best matches the customer complaint. Remedy 1: The target SOC limit is automatically set to 50% or to random values during charging. - Change the Mercedes me login password on the Mercedes me homepage. (My Account > Login and Security > Reset). (Refer to Annex 1). Previously granted authorizations should then be revoked so that the charging settings can no longer be changed by external applications. Advise customers not to share the new password again. - Are there any sub-users? If yes, revoke their rights and reassess the function. -If differences between the vehicle and the Mercedes me app are visible, a new synchronization is recommended. Turn off Digital Extras through the Mercedes me app or the MMCR portal, and then turn the services on again. Remedy 2: Incorrect notifications in the Mercedes me app for charging-related functions. - Restart synchronization between the app and backend. Turn off Digital Extras through the Mercedes me app or the MMCR portal, and then turn the services on again. Complaint AC and DC charging are not possible. The white LED on the charging inlet completely goes OFF after plugging in the charging cable. Related DTCs in quick test: There are no related fault codes (DTCs) stored in relevant control units. CPC3 - N127 (Drivetrain control unit) OBL223_GEN4 - N83/11 (Alternating current charger for high-voltage battery) DCB223 - N116/5 - Direct current charge connection unit (DCCU) Cause Control pilot (CP) circuit in DCB (N116/5: Direct current charge connection unit) might be not functional due to electrical overstress from EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment | Charging Station). Remedy Refer to the charging cable actual values in DCB (N116/5). The actual value “Charging cable at charging station” and “status of pilot function” shows “Charging cable NOT PLUGGED IN” & “CP not connected” respectively, even though the charging cable is connected on both sides. This confirms a possible breakdown of Control Pilot (CP) circuit inside the DCB. Complaint Clanking noise from the area of the speakers in the doors. Cause Under analysis. Remedy To narrow down the cause, first of all remove the door trim. • If the noise continues to occur even with the door trim removed, then continue the diagnosis working towards the speaker and if necessary, create a TIPS case with an informative video as an attachment. Information: Please refer to this document in the warranty claim and, after completing diagnosis, select the damage code corresponding to the component part that caused the problem. • If the noise stops when the door trim is removed, please proceed in accordance with LI72.10-P-067691. Information: In this case, do not use a damage code for the speakers in the warranty claim!

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
