2014 RAM 1500 Owner Complaints

The contact owns a 2014 Ram 1500. While driving approximately 40-50 MPH, the vehicle lost power steering assist, causing the steering wheel to be difficult to turn. The vehicle was driven to the residence. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and the rack and pinion was replaced. The contact associated the failure with NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V021000 (Steering); however, the VIN and model were not included in the recall. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.

While towing a 17ft trailer I had to slam on the brakes to avoid another vehicle. The trailer brakes and ABS on my truck did not work. I managed to avoid the other vehicle but the ABS, trailer and parking brake light all came on a couple minutes later. The lights went off but came back on a couple of days later. On XXX I took the truck to the Ram dealer in [XXX], where I originally bought it from and they diagnosed the brake module had gone out. Code C2200-49. On XXX I was informed that there is not part available to make the repair. This is an important safety component for towing a trailer and is required in [XXX]. The front fuel tank strap mounting bracket broke. There is a recall (U-04/NHTSA 18V-160) for model years 2009-2012 for this issue. It also was added to models thru 2018 as TSB/Ext. Warranty #14-002-18 Rev. A., which expired on my vehicle in March 2026. This means that the expense will be out of my pocket. What I don't understand is, it is a known safety issue on 2009-2018 Ram 1500 trucks, but only a recall for model years 2009-12. And since the recall doesn't presently cover my model year (2014), there was no notification of this issue sent to me. I believe that since it is a known issue included in a recall/TSB of model years through 2018, the recall should be extended to cover all model years. This failure could put myself and others at risk because there is only one bracket holding my fuel tank on, which could cause loss of control of vehicle or a fire to the vehicle if the remaining bracket breaks. This issue was discovered by a private auto repair shop, in which there were no warnings signals from the vehicle.

Electronic power steering rack and pinion failed and made the steering wheel very difficult to turn. This caused the truck to turn wide into a parking lot and almost strike another vehicle. This issue is a known problem for other RAM models, but does not officially apply to mine. Now, the truck will start fine, as soon as you turn the steering wheel, an alert comes up on the dash and the steering wheel is difficult to turn.

I have had the ABS control module show an internal fault twice now in 3 years. The latest incident was while I was towing my travel trailer. When the unit sets a code, it disables the trailer brakes, along with the anti-lock brakes. This could be really bad in on a hill or sudden need to stop. The first occurrence was in 2023. I was unable to find a replacement, so i found a company to repair the unit. After the current incident, I have started looking for a new unit. They are still not readily available. How can this not be a major safety problem? Manufacturers are required to provide ABS systems in cars, but not the parts to fix the systems? This seems to be a very common problem with the 2013-2018 Ram 1500 trucks. The problem part shows C2200, ABS module internal; internal electronic fault.

This complaint is to report a power steering failure in my 2014 ram truck which has only 21,345 miles. The failure happened at the start up so there was no safety risk for me, but I understand from reading prior complaints that it can happen during driving. There was no warning or issue prior to the failure. I simply started the truck and the red warning light came on the dash and I had no power steering. I haven’t taken it to a mechanic as they charge $200 just to diagnose the issue and dealer informed me the eps steering rack is on back order. I read this issue has been known since 2023. Is that true? How many complaints are needed to get a recall for this issue? I’m almost reluctant to drive it again if/when it gets fixed.

While driving the EPS went out displaying a warning message service power steering. I lost all control of power steering, had it scanned by a shop they stated I would have to replace to rack and pinion EPS unit. The issue is trying to find the part, not to meant it is going to cost between $3000-$4000 for the part and then the labor cost to change out. When looking to find parts i came across a report saying there has be several issues with this same EPS issue and it could be covered under a defeat recall or law suit act.

Sudden, complete loss of electric power steering while backing out in a parking lot. I was driving our 2014 Ram 1500. It was approximately 9:00 pm and I was in a post office parking lot. I started the truck, put the car in reverse and backed out. The steering suddenly became impossible to turn and the ESP warning appeared on the dash. The truck had been driving fine and the failure occurred without warning. THE ESP warning light had never appeared prior to this incident. The truck could not be safely driven after the steering failure and required towing to a mechanic. The mechanic diagnosed a failure of the electric power steering system and the entire electric power steering rack and pinion had to be replaced. This was an unexpected and significant repair expense at a cost of $2,788.50 including $150 for the tow. Thankfully, the total failure of the ESP did not occur when I was driving at a high speed and thankfully it was late enough in the day that the parking lot was empty and no other vehicles were involved or disrupted. My safety and others would have been at risk because the steering wheel was completely locked and I was unable to turn it at all. The old rack and pinion has been kept if inspection is needed. It has not been inspected by anyone other than our mechanic. I am specifically filing this report because after my own searches, I discovered that this situation has happened numerous times and it could be a very serious catastrophic event if it is not investigated. Rack and pinion/steering assist failed it is available for inspection and has not been repaired. My safety was put at risk along with the general public I was driving about 40 mph when all of the sudden I lost power assist I initially thought the engine stopped so I pulled off as best I could with no shoulder in that section of road. I sat there in the road for a minute until I figured out the engine was running I just didn't have power steering. The rack and pinion has been inspected by Jim click Dodge and I have not been able to afford the repair at around $3,200. The steering light is on in the dashboard.

This truck has a failed steering rack that literally almost took me off the road mid driving, but yet doesn't fall under the 2015-2016 official recall. I am documenting this because this is going to become a cost out-of-pocket. But seriously needs to be added to the list of active recalls.

While driving over a bump, the vehicle stopped and was restarted. The vehicle was taken to an unknown local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the wiring harness needed to be replaced; however, the part had been discontinued. The manufacturer was contacted and opened a case but declined a buyback. The Attorney General was contacted and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The contact owns a 2014 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while the vehicle was being inspected, the rack went through the subframe of the vehicle due to excessive rust. The subframe was completely rusted through. The subframe fell apart into pieces, and the fuel tank detached from the vehicle. The contact became aware of Technical Service Bulletin: 14/002/18rvea, referencing an extended warranty coverage; however, no recall had been issued. The warranty coverage only covered up to 12 years. The subframe needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and opened a case. The failure mileage was approximately 62,000.

I own a Ram pickup that has experienced a failure of the ABS brake module. The replacement ABS module is not available from the manufacturer, and I have now been waiting approximately three years for the necessary replacement part. I have contacted Ram dealerships regarding this problem and have repeatedly been told that the ABS module is on backorder and/or unavailable. Despite waiting for approximately three years, there is still no reasonable timeframe for obtaining the part and repairing my vehicle. This is not an ordinary convenience item. The ABS module is a critical safety component of the vehicle’s braking system. When the module fails, important safety systems can be disabled, including anti-lock braking and traction/stability control. Depending on the failure, other vehicle functions can also be affected. I am extremely concerned that Stellantis/Ram has allowed owners to remain without a manufacturer-supported repair for years because the replacement part is unavailable. An owner should not be forced to wait three years for a safety-critical braking component. I have also found numerous complaints from other Ram owners reporting similar ABS-module failures and extended or indefinite parts shortages. This indicates that the problem may be widespread rather than an isolated parts-supply issue. I am asking NHTSA to investigate: * The failure rate of this ABS module. * Whether the ABS module has a known defect or premature failure condition. * Why replacement modules have been unavailable for such an extended period. * Whether Stellantis/Ram has an adequate plan to repair affected vehicles. * Whether a safety recall, special service campaign, extended warranty, or other remedy is warranted. * Whether affected owners should be provided replacement modules at no cost. I believe it is unreasonable and unsafe for a manufacturer to leave owners without access to a replacement for a critical braking-system component for approximately three years.

when driving down the road and sometimes when I first start the 2014 Ram 1500 Laramie I own the electric power steering will quit working, I am being told when speaking with the Dodge dealership that the electric power steering on this vehicle is not covered under the recall NHTSA 19E-077 for 2013-2019 rams with the power steering issues when this vehicle has been showing the same symptoms as the recall states and the fact that intermittently the power steering will go out and could possibly cause an accident. I can't understand why a recall that contains 2013-2019 ram trucks would not include a 2014 that is showing the same problems. can you please shed some light on this matter for me? and how i might possibly get my truck added to this recall.
